Unit 3Part OneIII. Listen, Watch and DiscussSuggested answerThe man going there by car arrives first, but the cost is the highest of the three, about 4 dollars (Metro — $2.9; bike — zero). This game might have different results if the road was very crowded with traffic or if the destination were different. In a word, subway is a convenient, reliable means of transport.TranscriptClip1: Who would make it to work first?AZUZ: With gas prices at an all-time high, $3.83 a gallon. And it makes youwonder if there is a cheaper and faster way that you could be getting towork. Well, CNN, Zain Verjee, Tom Foreman, and Jamie McIntyredecided to commute to our Washington bureau by car, train, and bike tosee who would make it to work first. Check it out.ZAIN VERJEE: I’m going to beat these two boys by taking the metro to the bureau; alittle bit of a walk and one straight shot.JAMIE MCINTYRE: I’m driving, and I fully expect to be thwarte d by Washington rush hourtraffic.TOM FOREMAN: I’m going on a bicycle.VERJEE: Ok. We’re at the Bethesda station and it’s 8:46 in the morning. It’s gonnacost me $2.90.MCINTYRE: Connecticut Avenue is moving well. We got a shot at this. FOREMAN: Right now, I’m cutting underneath some of the heaviest traffic that’sabove this tunnel I’m in.VERJEE: It is 9:05; not too crowded. Wonder how Foreman is.FOREMAN: This is where you love it. Everybody is caught in traffic and you just gosmoking right past them.MCINTYRE: We are really in the home stretch now. If this car would just go. Go,buddy! Go! Come on! We’re in a race here, for crying out loud. VERJEE: Here we are at Union Station and it’s 9:15.MCINTYRE: There’s CNN. You haven’t seen Tom Foreman or Zain Verjee have you? GUARD: No.MCINTYRE: Alright.VERJEE: 9:21.FOREMAN: We’re just getting killed on time here.MCINTYRE: Thank you, thank you. Once again, fossil fuels win out.VERJEE (Joking): Wow! I won!FOREMAN: I fear we have lost. When did you guys get here, like five minutes ago?Cause I’m thinking...VERJEE: He beat me by 8 minutes. He won.FOREMAN: Really? How did you beat her?MCINTYRE: Took the back way.FOREMAN: How much did we spend on o ur commute today? I’m gonna start. Let mestart the bidding at zero.VERJEE: $2.90.MCINTYRE: Ok, it only took me about 4 dollars; maybe a gallon of gas to get here. You know what the best thing is? Options. CORRESPONDENTS: Jamie McIntyre, Zain Verjee, Tom Foreman, CNN, Washington. AZUZ: OK, it may have cost Tom Foreman zero. But Guess what, he smells.(laugh) He biked, he biked to working with sweating. The other two, youknow, get to go for the day. I think he always smells! You can see moreof the gr eat race. To the scene at the bureau today news on “IssueNumber One,” with our own Ali Velshi and Gerri Willis.Part TwoWarm-up Activities2. Note TakingKeyEfficiency: 48 kms per hour, carrying 4.5 million people every dayRoutes: 27 lines, 468 stationsOperating hours: 24 hours a day, 7 days a weekThreats: from men, nature, timeTranscriptTo really know what makes a great city work, you have to peel back its skin and expose its secret life force, a system of incredible complexity and technology that millions depend on, but few understand. A fantastic voyage now begins, a journey deep inside the world’s mega cities. They call it “the Big Apple,” the largest metropolis in America. Eight million people scattered across five boroughs, each a city in itself. The core of the Big Apple, the bustling borough of Manhattan. Like no place on earth, New York is famed for its pace, yet life here would slow to a crawl without one vital piece of infrastructure—perhaps the most famous transportation system in the world—the New York subway. It’s the engine that drives this megacity. Seventy five percent of New Yorkers have no car. They don’t need one. New York has the best transit system in America. Yet the subway is a system under siege. Daily it faces a triple threat from men, from nature and from time. Count on perils and mind rails. Two thirds of the subway runs underground, under roads, under rivers, under skyscrapers. The system truly carries its weight on its shoulders, billions of tons of concrete and steel, asphalt and earth, all bearing down, millions of liters of water threatening to flood in, a 100-year-old network, struggling to keep up, and the most ominous number of all—911. In these dark shadows, the specter of terrorism is no illusion. It’s a nightmare New York survived and struggles daily to never relive.New York has a second nickname—“the city that never sleeps”, an insomniac metropolis in perpetual motion. Like the city, the subway never rests. It runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s the fastest way to get around. Average speed on asphalt, 10 km per hour; average speed on rails,48 km per hour. Conceived in the 19th century, it was the world’s first subway with four-track service: two local tracks, two express, no waiting. In a city choked by congestion, the subway was a breakthrough. From a single line, tentacles spread across the city to become the most extensive subway system on earth. 27 lines run along 1300 km of track, enough to stretch from Rome to Amsterdam. Linking the system, 468 stations, more than any other system in the world. The system extends its reach through a complex web of infrastructure: 68 bridges over land and water, 14 tunnels under rivers, two key rail links, and one of the world’s oldest ferries. Every working day, trains carry 4.5 million people, nearly the entire population of Norway, making it one of the world’s busiest subway systems. Within this vital organ, life pulses at the speed of a New York minute. And everyday the city struggles to keep it beating, and keep it safe.Text IComprehension CheckI. Reading for general ideas1. Fill in the blanks to complete the outline of the text.Suggested answerThesis statement: Although the subway in New York City is the least pleasant and most dangerous means of getting around the city, it is the fastest and most economical means of transportation. Reading and making interpretationsSuggested answer1.When I first moved here in 1989, friends kindly warned me not to take the already more-than- 1.80-year-old underground railroad, for both New Yorkers and tourists regard it as the leastpleasant and most dangerous means of moving around in this forever bustling city (City That Never Sleeps is its nickname).2.It takes you not only to where you want to go, but gives you a glimpse of a colorful anddiverse world which may have an impact on your life.3.You may find all kinds of people in the subway: men, women and children of different socialstatus, ethnical groups, dressed proudly in various colors and styles, and talking to each other in diverse languages. The subway reveals itself as a miniature of the crowded energetic cosmopolitan life.4.If the United Nations is where leaders of various nations solve problems through peacefulmeans, the New York subway is where people from different stratum of society spend time together in the crowded underground train.5.The New York City subway is dim and very crowded, which seems to make an alreadyunpleasant daily life even more unpleasant. Yet only in such places can all aspects of the cosmopolitan life — both the goods and the ills, so diverse that you can hardly tell which side is the real New York — be seen, felt, and sometimes even understood.Part ThreeText IIComprehension CheckI. Reading for specific informationKey1.Such a system is the best choice, for it provides low-cost transportation and a healthy urbanenvironment.2.For an intermediate-sized city, light rail proves efficient transport to handle its not-so-largevolume of passengers. Mega cities usually need underground rail systems to move its passengers in a timely fashion.3.Role played by rail: the foundation on which a city’s transportation system is developed Roleplayed by bike: complement the rail system4.Bike riding cuts down congestion, lowers pollution, reduces obesity, increases physical fitness, and is affordable for billions of people who cannot buy an automobile. When used for routine patrol by police, it saves cost and increases efficiency. Bike is becoming an integral part of the support system for e-commerce. The integration of bike into transport system makes cities more livable than those centered on car transport systems. Noise, pollution, congestion, and frustration are all lessened. Both the people and the environment are healthier.5.Providing both bicycle trails and designated lanes on streets for bicycles could improve roadsafety for bicycle riders.II. Reading and making interpretationsSuggested answer1.The combination of rail, bicycles and pedestrian walks as an integrated system of urbantransportation provides the advantages of both low-cost transportation and clean environment.2.As soon as the rail system is constructed, the intersections of the rail become the popularplaces where office buildings, high-rise apartments, factories and shops are located.3.Although global public focus their attention on the 885,000 accidents related to automobile, the estimated 3 million victims of air pollution far outnumbered that of auto-accidents.4.As the information economy is taking shape and e-commerce develops, there is an increasingdemand for quick, reliable urban delivery services.herlands and Japan collaborated to combine bicycles and rail commuter services byproviding bicycle parking at rail stations, thus enabling commuters to easily transfer from one means of transportation to another.Part FourText IIIQuestions for discussion1. Bikes stand for the old and cars for the new. Many people turn from bikes to cars; preferential policies for car use make it less convenient to ride bikes than it used to be. Beijing and Shanghai are taken as examples.2. Text II claims that a combination of rail, bicycle and pedestrian walkways makes the best for the urban transport system and thus bicycles should be integrated into the public transport system and encouraged as a healthy, economical, and clean means of transport. In China, as people’s living standard improves, more cars are bought for personal use. However, with increasing congestion on the road and more air pollution, both the public and the government seem to attach importance to boosting metro plus bicycle commuting. On the other hand, we have to note that in big cities, riding a bike to workplace is not practical for many commuters. When considering this issue, the situation of our country has to be taken into consideration.3. Open-ended.4. Open-ended.Additional workSuggested answerThough the Chinese are obsessed with cars in recent years, and though cars and buses have increasingly taken over bicycle pathways, bicycle remains a mainstay for many Chinese.Part FiveLanguage focusFill in the blanks with the words above.1. ambivalent 4. ambivalence 7. escalate 10. versatile2. paralyzing 5. escalating 8. versatility3. patronize 6. patronizing 9. paralysisII.
