Gu Zhaodi, 60, had taken water for granted for years. In fact, no one in the beautiful lake city of Wuxi, Jiangsu Province had bothered to spare a thought on water.

But all that changed dramatically overnight last month when taps in the city ran dry.Due to a blue-green algae (藻类) outbreak in Taihu Lake, China’s third largest freshwater lake and the source of drinking water for 4 million Wuxi residents, water from the city’s taps became dark and smelly.

“I can’t believe there is no water for drinking, let alone cooking and washing,” said Gu.

The lake was blanketed with the algae, giving off a strong smell of rotting meat.A stone thrown into it took a long time to sink.Experts said that algae usually boom because of hot water and rich chemicals like phosphor(磷)in the water.

“High temperature and a lack of rain in the past few months helped the growth of algae,” said Zhang Lijun, an official from the State Environment Protection Administration.“However, pollution from human activity should be most blamed for the disaster.”

Taihu Lake is surrounded by many small factories, which sprang up in the 1980s.In the 1990s,many foreign-funded companies joined in.The industries prospered, and Wuxi has grown into one of the wealthiest cities in East China.

But that came at the price of pollution. The lake was treated like a waste dump(垃圾堆),with factories emptying industrial waste and untreated sewage(污水)into it.

Although, after the government’s effort, life in the city has gone back to normal, the one-week crisis rang a bell for the government and local people.“It’s time to rebuild the beauty of nature, or our lives will be at risk,” said Gu.

“A safe environment comes first.Economic growth will be nothing without fresh water to drink and clean air to breathe.” said ChinaDaily.

B.rich chemicals in the water

C.a lack of rain

D.plentiful water and sunshine

A.The one-week disaster has made the local people realize the importance of building a beautiful city.

B.It is human activity rather than the algae that is to blame for the water pollution.

C.Only when the environment is safe and friendly can man live a better and healthier life.

D.Environment should be taken into consideration first if a city plans to develop its economic. 58.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

B.Water turned off

C.Water pollution troubled Wuxi

D.Algae threatened Taihu Lake

59.According to the passage,Taihu Lake ________.

Diana Jacobs thought her family had a workable plan to pay for college for her 21-year-old twin sons:a combination of savings, income, scholarships, and a modest amount of borrowing. Then her husband lost his job,and the plan fell apart.

“I have two kids in college, and I want to say ‘come home’,but at the same time I want to provide them with a good education,” says Jacobs.

The Jacobs family did work out a solution:They asked and received more aid from the schools, and each son increased his borrowing to the maximum amount through the federal loan program. They will each graduate with $20,000 of debt, but at least they will be able to finish school.

With unemployment rising, financial aid administrators expect to hear from more families like the Jacobses.More students are applying for aid,and more families expect to need student loans.College administrators are concerned that they will not have enough aid money to go around.

At the same time, tuition continues to rise.A report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education found that college tuition and fees increased 439% from 1982 to 2007,while average family income rose just 147%.Student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade.

“If we go on this way for another 25 years,we won’t have an affordable system of higher education,”says Patrick M.Callan, president of the center.“The middle class families have been financing it through debt. They will send kids to college whatever it takes, even if that means a huge amount of debt.”

Financial aid administrators have been having a hard time as many companies decide that student loans are not profitable enough and have stopped making them. The good news, however,is that federal loans account for about three quarters of student borrowing, and the government says that money will flow uninterrupted.

A.The twins wasted too much money.

B.The father was out of work.

C.Their savings ran out.

D.The family fell apart.

61.How did the Jacobses manage to solve their problem?

A.They asked their kids to come home.

B.They borrowed $20,000 from the schools.

C.They encouraged their twin sons to do part-time jobs.

D.They got help from the schools and the federal government.

62.Financial aid administrators believe that ________.

A.more families will face the same problem as the Jacobses

B.the government will receive more letters of complaint

C.college tuition fees will double soon

D.America’s unemployment will fall

63.What can we learn about the middle class families from the text?

A.They blamed the government for the tuition increase.

B.Their income remained steady in the last decade.

C.They will try their best to send kids to college.

D.Their debts will be paid off within 25 years.

“Mum,what does it mean when someone tells you that they have a skeleton (骨骼) in the closet (衣橱)?”Jessica asked. “A skeleton in the closet?”her mother paused thoughtfully. “Well,it’s something that you would rather not have anyone else know about. For example,if in the past, someone in Dad’s family had been arrested for stealing a horse,it would be ‘a skeleton in his family’s closet’.He really wouldn’t want any neighbor to know about it.”

“Why pick on my family?” Jessica’s father said with anger. “Your family history isn’t so good, you know.Wasn’t your great-great-grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes?”“Yes,but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ancestors arrived as prisoners.”“Gosh, sorry I asked.I think I understand now,” Jessica cut in before things grew worse.

After dinner, the house was very quiet.Jessica’s parents were still quite angry with each other. Her mother was ironing clothes and every now and then she glared at her husband, who hid behind his newspaper pretending to read. When she finished, she gathered the freshly pressed clothes in her arms and walked to Jessica’s closet.Just as she opened the door and reached in to hang a skirt,a bony arm stuck out from the dark depths and a bundle of white bones fell to the floor.Jessica’s mother sank into a faint (晕倒),waking only when Jessica put a cold, wet cloth on her forehead. She looked up to see the worried faces of her husband and daughter.

“What happened?Where am I?” she asked. “You just destroyed the school’s skeleton,Mum,”explained Jessica. “I brought it home to help me with my health project.I meant to tell you,but it seemed that as soon as I mentioned skeletons and closets,it caused a problem between you and Dad.”Jessica looked in amazement as her parents began to laugh madly. “They’re both crazy,” she thought. 64.According to Jessica’s mother,“a skeleton in the closet” means “________”.A.a family honor B.a family secret

All of America’s popular music—jazz, country, rock and roll, and hip-hop—has its roots in the sound and spirit of the Delta blues. Its lyrics gave voice to the lives and dissatisfaction of workers in the fields and plantations of the Deep South, who grew up in the shadow of slavery. The blues may be synonymous with sorrow, but singing it is an act of defiance, not despair. As the novelist Ralph Ellison once wrote, the blues “reminds us of our limitations while encouraging us to see how far we can actually go.”Remarkably,we can still almost touch the originators of this revolutionary art form.Reversing the journey the blues took north up the Mississippi River—when African Americans left the South in search of new, industrial jobs—photographer Gail Mooney,57,traveled from Chicago clubs down to the Delta to capture the images and stories of bluesmen and blueswomen while they are still here to connect us to the music’s early days.

“In our conversations,we talked about so much more than their music,”says Mooney, whose multimedia exhibit on the blues has just begun a U.S. tour this spring.“We talked about their childhoods, their cultural roots, and a time in America when rural life was migrating toward a more urban existence.I would listen,I would shoot, and sometimes I would capture a feeling.”

These photographs feature some of the musicians who worked and studied with blues pioneers—drummer Sam Carr is the son of the legendary Robert Nighthawk, while Pinetop Perkins (now 94 years old) and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith played alongside Muddy Waters.

Already, this generation is leaving us:Little Milton, guitarist and vocalist, and Robert “Junior”Lockwood (who learned from Robert Johnson, the most mythic bluesman of all) have passed away since Mooney began her project.Their legacy, however,is massive.Turn on your radio and some little trace of the Delta gets passed down again.

Although people are born to win, they are also born hopeless and totally dependent on their environment. As we have noted, few people are total winners or losers. Most of them are winners in some areas of their lives and losers in other.Their winning or losing is influenced by what happens to them in childhood.

Winners successfully make the transition_from total helplessness to independence.Losers do not.A lack of response to dependency needs, poor nutrition, unhappy relationships, disease, continuing disappointments, inadequate physical care, and terrible events are among the many experiences that contribute to making people losers.Such experiences interrupt,or prevent the normal progress towards independence.

A winner is not afraid to do his own thinking and to use his own knowledge. He can separate facts from his opinion and doesn’t pretend to have all the answers. He listens to others, evaluates what they say,but comes to his own conclusions.

A loser represses his own capacity to express appropriately his full range of possible behavior. He may be unaware of other choices for his life if the path he chooses goes nowhere. He is afraid to try new things. He maintains his own status. He is a repeater. He repeats not only his own mistakes, but also repeats those of his family and culture.A loser has difficulty giving and receiving affection. He does not enter into close, honest, direct relationship with others.

56.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.What happens in one’s childhood contributes to making people losers or winners.

B.Winners will depend on their own conclusions.

C.In their lives people become neither winners or losers.

D.A loser is afraid to do his own thinking and to use his own knowledge.

57.From the passage you can infer the underlined word “transition”in paragraph.2 has the similar meaning as “________”.

A.substitution B.transformation

C.transportation D.situation

58.Which of the following is NOT true about the winner?

A.He has dependent thinking.

B.He is at a loss what to do in his life.

C.He can separate facts from his own opinion.

D.He can come to his own conclusions.

59.A loser may ________.

A.lack independence

B.do his own thinking

C.make correct choices

D.draw his own conclusions

The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of discussion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population.Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them.

One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control programme lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources,it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birth rate, whatever the consequences may be.In a highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex.A decreasing birth rate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened.Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline.

60.A small population may mean ________.

A.higher productivity,but a lower average income

B.lower productivity,but a higher average income

C.lower productivity and a lower average income

D.higher productivity and a higher average income

61.According to the passage,a large population will provide a chance for developing ________.

A.agriculture B.transport system

C.industry D.national economy

62.In a developed country, people will perhaps go out of work if the birthrate ________.

A.goes up B.goes down

C.remains stable D.is out of control

63.According to the passage,a slowly rising birth rate perhaps is good for ________.

A.developing nation

B.a developed nation

C.every nation with a big population

D.every nation with a small population

The Richters spend about $400 a month sending books to 200 children.“Some people sit there and wait to die,” says Tim.“Others get as busy as they can in the time they have left.”

In the fall of 1985,I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere.Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.

My grandma,an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65.She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer.I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her.It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.

Then I got married with another dream:building my family with a combination of adopted and biological children. In 1999,we adopted our first son.To lay eyes on him was fantastic—and very emotional.A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No.3.In 2003,I gave birth to another boy.

You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8!Our home was a complete zoo—a joyous zoo.Not surprising,I never did make it back to college full-time.But I never gave up on the dream either.I had only one choice:to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester.

The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for

them to follow through the rest of their lives.

In 2007,I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!

I am not special, just single-minded.It always strikes me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you’re in the midst of it,it just seems normal.Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process.Remember:little steps add up to big dreams. 68.When the author went to Howard University, her dream was to be ________.

A.a writer B.a teacher

C.a judge D.a doctor

69.Why did the author quit school in her second year of college?

A.She wanted to study by herself.

B.She fell in love and got married.

C.She suffered from a serious illness.

D.She decided to look after her grandma.

70.What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 4 and 5?

A.She was busy yet happy with her family life.

B.She ignored her guilty feeling for her sons.

C.She wanted to remain a full-time housewife.

D.She was too confused to make a correct choice.

选修6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.

They said that the painters were careless and their paintings were ridiculous.
