But if you judge a fish, by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid."—Albert EinsteinIf you have a kid with special needs in the school system, you' re likely to have come across that saying hanging on a classroom wall. My five-year-old daughter Syona has cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and itmeans, combined with her communication and sight problems, that normal standard isn't always an accurate measure of her abilities.By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26-year old teacher in Jacksonville, Florida, who starts his special education class by calling up each student to give them much admiration and a high-five. I couldn't help but be reminded of Syona's teacher and how she supports each kid in a very similar way. Ulmer recently shared a video of his teaching experience. "I have seen their confidence increase rapidly." he said. All I could think was: how lucky these students are to have such good teachers.Syona's teacher has ' an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: wonderful. Her teacher doesn't focus on what can't be done --- she focuses on what can be done. Over the past several months, my husband Dilip and I have seen Syona's confidence increase greatly. She uses words she wouldn't have thought of using before. She recently told me about her classmates trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try.I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home. We've recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all have. If we are reminded of our strengths on aregular basis, we will become increasingly confident about progress and success.4.What does the author think of Albert Einstein's saying A.Funny. B.True. C.Strange. D.Confusing.5.What can we learn about Syona's teacherA.She is Syona's favorite teacher. B.She puts Einstein's quote on the wallC.She uses videos to teach her students. D.She helps increase her students' confidence.6.What change has taken place in the author's familyA.They've invited Ulmer's students to their home. B.They visit Ulmer's classroom regularly.C.They give each other praise every day. D.They feel thankful to people in their lives.7.What is the author's attitude towards Chris Ulmar's way of teachingA.Supportive B.Opposed C.Indifferent D.NegativeCTraveling without a map in different countries, I find out about different ways of directions every time I ask "How can I get to the post office "Foreign tourists are often puzzled in Japan because most streetsthere don't have name signs. In Japan, people use landmarks (地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, "Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go pasta fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop."People in Los Angeles, the US, have no idea of distance on the map: they measure distance by time, not miles. "How far away is the post office " you ask. "Oh," they answer, "it’s about five minutes from here." You don't understand completely, "Yes, but how many miles away is it, please " To this question you won't get an answer, because most probably they don't know it themselves.People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because tourists seldom understand the Greek language. Instead, a Greek will often say," Follow me." Then he'll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.Sometimes a person doesn't know the answer to your question. What happens in the situation A New Yorker might say," Sorry, I have no idea." But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers "I don't know." People there believe that "I don't" is impolite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. So a tourist can get lost very easily in Yucatan! However, one thing will help you everywhere in the world. It's body language.8.Which of the following is probably an example of Japanese directionsA."The post office is at Street Kamira."B."Turn right at the hospital and go past a school."C."The post office is about five minutes from here."D."Go south two miles. Turn west and then go another mile." 9.Why don’t people in Los Angeles give directions in miles A.They prefer to head you the way.B.They prefer to use body language.C.They often have no idea of distance measured by miles. D.They use landmarks in their directions instead of distance. 10.How do Greeks give directionsA.Using street names. B.Using landmarks.C.Leading people the way. D.Giving people a wrong direction. 11.What will probably be talked about in the next paragraph A.The importance of a map. B.The situation in London. C.Different languages in Japan. D.The use of body language.DOver the last seven years, most states have banned (禁止) texting by drivers, and public service campaigns have tried a wide range of methods to persuade people to put down their phones when they are behind the wheel.Yet the problem, by just about any measure, appears to be getting worse. Americans are still texting while driving, as well as using social networks and taking photos. Road accidents, which had fallen for years, are now rising sharply. That is partly because people are driving more, but Mark Rosekind, the chief of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said distracted (分心) driving was "only increasing, unfortunately." "Big change requires big ideas," he said in a speech last month, referring broadly to the need to improve road safety. So to try to change a distinctly modern behavior, lawmakers and public health experts are reaching back to an old approach: They want to treat distracted driving like drunk driving. An idea from lawmakers in New York is to give police officers a new device called the Textalyzer. It would work like this: An officer arriving at the scene of a crash could ask for the phones of the drivers and use the Textalyzer to check in the operating system for recent activity. The technology could determine whether a driver had just texted, emailed or done anything else that is not allowed under New York's hands- free driving laws."We need something on the books that can change people's behavior," said Felix W. Ortiz, who pushed for the state's 2001 ban on hand-held devices by drivers. If the Textalyzer bill becomes law,he said, "people are going to be more afraid to put their hands on the cell phone."12.Which of the following best describes the ban on drivers' texting in the USA.Ineffective. B.Unnecessary. C.Inconsistent. D.Unfair. 13.What can the Textalyzer help a police officer find out A.Where a driver came from.B.Whether a driver used their phone when driving.C.How fast a driver was going.D.When a driver arrived at the scene.14.What does the underlined word" something" in the last paragraph refer toA.Advice. B.Data.C.Tests. D.Laws.15.What is a suitable title for the textA.To Drive or Not to Drive Think Before You Start B.Texting and Driving Watch Out for the TextalyzerC.New York Banning Hand- Held Devices by Drivers.D.The Next Generation Cell Phone: The Textalyzer.第二节(本题共5小题,每小题2.5分,共12.5分。

When we look up at the night sky, we see stars, the twinkle of a moving satellite and occasionally a distant planet. But one thing we don't see is the millions of pieces of junk filling up space. It's this debris (废弃物)that's causing problems for the existing technology that's up there and which we rely on.The amount of space junk is increasing. Over the last few decades, satellites and rockets have been launched into space, littering the cosmos as they go. It's estimated there are now millions of thrown-away pieces of metal and other materials in orbit-everything from old rocket pieces to accidentally dropped astronaut tools, and even flecks of paint. The fear is that if we don't start taking this debris out of the sky soon, it will become a great danger to active satellites. Nobu Okada, Chief Executive of Astroscale-a company working on ways to clean up space junk-says hitting "even a small paint fleck…has enough power to blow up other satellites."Several ideas are being looked at to collect the debris floating around in space. In 2018, the Remove Debris spacecraft carried out various experiments, including testing a net that could catch a satellite or firing a harpoon at a target in orbit to try to catch it.This year the UK Space Agency is helping to fund new approaches to tracking satellites and debris in space. Jacob Geer from UKSA told the BBC: "Space surveillance(监视)and tracking is one of the key things we can do to keep safe those satellites we rely on now, and to make surecertain orbits don't become inaccessible(无法接近的)for future generations because there's too much debris in them."It's clear that something must be done to achieve a deep clean in the space. But looking to the future, like any litter problem, we need to look at ways of creating less-and that shouldn't be the stuff of science fiction.9.Which of the following items is space junk?______A. Metal stuff.B. Old rocket pieces in the orbit.C. Tools in the spaceship.D. Paint on a spaceship.10.What problem can space junk cause according to Paragraph 2?______A. Small paint of fleck will blow away satellites.B. Active satellites will be in danger.C. It will be impossible to clean up.D. It will lead to disasters on the earth.11.According to Jacob Geer, what makes orbits inaccessible for future generations?______A. Too much man-made satellites.B. Too much population.C. Too much space activities.D. Too much debris in space orbits.12.Which of the following is not helpful in solving the debris problem? ______A. Stopping reading science fictions.B. Carrying out a thorough space cleaning.C. Creating less space junk from now on.D. Using space surveillance and tracking system.DGood health is a precious thing. When we are healthy, we can learn, work, and support ourselves and our families. When we are sick, we struggle, and our families and communities fall behind. That's why the World Health Organization is needed. It negotiated(谈判)the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control,a powerful tool to help reduce diseases and deaths caused by tobacco. II 阅读(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 阅读理解(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A Mark Twain wrote The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn in 1884. Since then, the book has come out in at least 60 languages. People say that it is the best book ever written by an American writer. American students still read the book. In 1935, Ernest Hemingway wrote, “All modern American literature (文学) comes from one book by Mark Twain called ‘Huckleberry Finn’”. There was nothing before and there has been nothing as good since. The writer who became Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clements in 1835. He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri on the Mississippi River. He once worked as an assistant to a publisher (出版商) and a pilot on a steamboat that sailed on the Mississippi. He heard the riverboat workers call out the words “mark twain”. That was a measure for the depth of water. In 1861, the American Civil War (美国内战) put an end to steamboat traffic on the Mississippi. So Clements travelled west and became a reporter for newspapers in Nevada and California. Later, he wrote funny stories and called himself “Mark Twain”. Twain became famous for his story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County in 1865.
