Crazy stuff!After that thrilling tale, we learned how to describe colors using adjectives like "vibrant", "muted", "pastel" and "neon". My favorite was "fluorescent" - it reminds me of those glowing lava lamps I had as a kid. We practiced using the adjectives to talk about colors we saw in nature, art, clothes, you name it.Then we moved on to idioms and expressions that use colors. Like "feeling blue" for being sad, or "seeing red" when you're angry. I always get a kick out of those funny sayings! We did activities matching the idioms to their meanings. Harder than I thought, let me tell ya!The pinnacle though, was when we put together our own "Color Festival" presentations. We got into groups and each group picked a color to represent a cultural festival or celebration. My group did yellow for Thailand's Songkran water festival. We made this epic poster board with pictures, descriptions of traditions, and key vocabulary words in both English and Thai.For the presentation part, we dressed up in traditional Thai clothes and put on a little skit acting out the water fights and celebrations. I, of course, played the lead role as the prince leading the festivities. What can I say, I'm a natural performer!At the very end, we had our whole class Color Festival where each group set up their display and we went around learning about all the awesome color traditions. The big championships are Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. There's also golf where players use clubs to hit a small ball into holes on a big grassy course. Golf requires a lot of precision and concentration. The Masters is one of golf's biggest events.Swimming is a really healthy sport where swimmers race different strokes and distances in pools or open water. I want to tell you about some of the coolest stuff we covered.First up, we read about the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Can you believe those huge pyramid-shaped tombs were built like 4,500 years ago? And they're so massive - the biggest one is over 450 feet tall! That's like a 40-story building. The ancient Egyptians who built them must have been super smart architects and engineers. I can't even imagine how they moved all those giant stone blocks weighing tons and tons. Some people think aliens from outer space helped them! Haha just kidding, but they are pretty out of this world.Speaking of out of this world, we also learned about the Moai statues on Easter Island. This tiny remote island in the Pacific Ocean has almost 1,000 of these giant stone human figures scattered all over. The biggest one is over 30 feet tall and weighs 82 tons! That's as heavy as 12 elephants. Nobody really knows why the ancient Rapa Nui people who lived there made them. Maybe they were guardians or represented important leaders. Or maybe...they were actually aliens!! Just joking again. But isn't it crazy to think how these islanders moved those colossal statues around back then without modern machines?Okay, so get this - we studied this mountain in Tanzania called Mount Kilimanjaro. It's the tallest mountain in Africa at almost 20,000 feet high! That's so tall that there's snow and glaciers at the top even though it's near the equator. Imagine having to climb up that high - your head would feel like it was going to explode from the thin air. Some very brave and adventurous mountain climbers have made it all the way up though. I don't think I could ever do that. I get tired just thinking about it!Another amazingly tall thing we covered was the Redwood trees in California. These giant sequoia trees can grow over 300 feet tall! That's like a 30-story skyscraper made of wood. Andthey're so wide that it would take around 20 people holding hands to wrap their arms all the way around the trunk. Redwoods are some of the biggest living things on Earth and can live for thousands of years. Just picturing one makes me feel so small. It would be so cool to visit the Redwood National Park and see them up close.I could go on and on about the awesome world wonders we learned, like the Northern Lights, Angel Falls waterfall, the Great Barrier Reef, and so much more. But I have to stop somewhere so I can tell you about my favorite part - when we did our group projects on different natural wonders.My group chose to research The Wave in Arizona. It's this crazy cool rock formation in the desert that looks like a frozen ocean wave made of sandstone! The colors and stripes are so beautiful and trippy. It was formed by erosion over millions of years of wind and water shaping the soft rocks. Only 20 people per day are allowed to visit The Wave now because it was starting to get damaged by too many hikers. Can you imagine having that whole incredible place all to yourselves? We made this rad poster showing the groovy swirled patterns and did a presentation talking about the geological forces that created it. Looking at those issues made me realize how we all need to do our part as global citizens.The third part of the unit moved in a more positive direction with sections on "Natural Wonders" and "Amazing Ecosystems." These celebrated incredible places around the world that everybody should try to see one day if they can. The "Natural Wonders" reading described marvels like the Grand Canyon, Aurora Borealis, and Great Barrier Reef. The pictures looked unreal! "Amazing Ecosystems" went into cool details about how rainforests, coral reefs, and other environments work. Did you know how important bees are as pollinators? Wild facts like that make me appreciate nature even more. For these readings, we had to do group projects researching a natural wonder or ecosystem of our choice and making presentations about their significance. My team picked glaciers because of how their melting is a consequence of climate change. I'm becoming such a tree-hugger after this unit!The last main piece we covered was "Indigenous Cultures." This looked at how many traditional societies have lived in harmony with their environments for centuries. We learned about their sustainable practices, nature-inspired folklore, and efforts to preserve their ways of life in modern times. New vocabwords here were "indigenous," "folklore," and "subsistence." The activity had us writing stories inspired by nature from the perspective of an indigenous person. Mine imagined the origin story of how the sun and moon were formed according to a made-up tribe. I tried putting myself in their mindset of seeing the sacred wonder in the world around them.By the end of Unit 3, I felt like my eyes had been opened to how beautiful yet fragile our planet really is. The materials taught useful words to discuss the environment while also making me want to cherish and protect nature more. I'll never take clean air, water, and thriving ecosystems for granted again! This unit convinced me that we all need to be environmentally conscious if we want to preserve Earth's majesty for future generations. Even simple individual actions can make a big difference when multiplied by millions of people. After studying this, I have a new appreciation for the outdoors and am。
