The application of Face Principle to Business English

1. Purpose & Significance of Research

In the information age, face principle play a very crucial role in international politics, economic diplomacy, foreign trade, the press and publication as well as some aspects of social life.

This paper aims at: Firstly, giving a systematically knowledge about Face principle. Secondly, finding out the factors that affect our business issues. Lastly, proposing feasible advice to solve the problems in business issues. All in all, this paper is aiming at giving better understanding about the significance of Face Principle in Business English communication and using effectively in realizing and achieving the goal of Business, and offering certain help in the study of Business English Teaching, this paper proposes some workable suggestions based on the author's own study experience.

Due to the globalization, our state has established more and more combination with the world, especially after China’s ente ring to WTO, the global cooperation in economy and technology and the progress of trading issues are frequent and blossoming, which lead to a great number of needs of good-qualified genius. Business English becomes much more popular and important in modern society. Face Principle has the irreplaceable meaning in Business English. At present, few references can be found to guide one integrated Business issues. This paper will theoretically and realistically expound the significance and the application of Face Principle in each part of Business English, which includes Business Reception, Business Conference, Business Negotiation, and Business Correspondence. Aiming at giving better understanding about the significance of Face Principle in Business English communication and using effectively in realizing and achieving the goal of Business, and offering certain help in the study of Business English Teaching, this paper proposes some workable suggestions based on the author's own study experience.

2.Literature Review

Since the reform and opening up, China’s economy has over the type of development in international business. With China’s international economic and trade activities, Business English has become increasingly important, national experts and scholars began to conduct a extensive study in which researchers have the greatest impact.

In China, the earliest study of face could date back to Lin Yutang (1936) gave a specific and vivid description of face, which perhaps best reveals its significance and mystery for the Chinese. He argued, "Face cannot be translated or defined. It is like honor and is not honor. It cannot be purchased with money, and gives a man or a woman a material pride. It is hollow and is what a man or a woman die for. It is invisible and yet by definition exists by being shown to the public."

Chinese culture is a typical Oriental culture while American culture is a typical Western culture. The face in the United States differs from that in China. The three characteristics of face outlined by Lusting and Koester are (1999)very useful for us to understand the face in the United States.First, face is social. Face therefore refers to the public or social image of an individual that is held by others. Face, then, always occurs in a relational setting. Second, face is an impression, which may or may not be shared by all, that may differ from a person's self-image. To maintain face, people want others to act toward them with respect, regardless of their "real" and thoughts impressions.
