A

When we talk about intelligence we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new or upsetting situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.

For instance, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can do, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He probably isn’t sure how it will all work out, but at least he tries. And if he can’t make things work out ri ght, he doesn’t feel ashamed that he failed; he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very

young, has a special outlook on life, a special feeling about life, and a special way of how he fits into it.

If you look at children, you’ll see great difference s between what we call “bright” children and “notbright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright

child really wants to find out about life --- he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world; he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.

50. In a new situation, an intelligent person ___________.

A. knows more about what might happen to him

B. is sure of the result he will get

C. is ready to face and fit himself in the situation

D. cares more about himself

51. If an intelligent person failed, he would _________.

A.try not feel ashamed

B. learn from his experiences

C. try to find all he could do

D. make sure what result he would get

52. The difference between bright children and nonbright children lies in _______________.

A. their attitude towards life

B. the degree of cleverness

C. the amount of knowledge about the world

D. their way of thinking

53. The author of this passage will probably continue to talk about _________.

A. how to determine what intelligence is

B. how an unintelligence person should be taught

C. how to solve intelligent problems

D. how to educate children to deal with different situations

With the nearly US $300 million in the first four days after its release, Avatar, which cost about US $200 million to make, has now won another title: Most Successful Movie of 2009. Hollywood director James Cameron once again draws people’s attention.

James Cameron was born in August, 1954 in Canada. His artist mother encouraged him to draw and paint when he was a child. She helped arrange an exhibition of his paintings in a local gallery when he was still in his teens. Inspired by the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, he began to experiment with 16 mm film, photographing model spaceships he had built. The Cameron family moved to California when he was 17 and Cameron was admitted to Fullerton College, where he was not interested in what he learned. Uncertain of his direction in life, torn between art and science, he dropped out of college. He became

a truck driver. After the film Star Wars reawakened his love of filmmaking, he quit his jo

b and taught himself the technology of filmmaking.

He borrowed money from friends to make a short film he showed to director Roger Corman. Corman gave Cameron a chance to work as a model builder and production designer on his horror films. After two years with Corman, Cameron directed his first film, but it almost turned into his last. The producer of Piranha Ⅱ: The Spawning fired him, saying that the film Cameron had shot was unusable. In 1984, Cameron directed the film that was to change his life, The Terminator. With the international success of The Terminator, Cameron won the director’s chair for Aliens in 1986 and went on to direct The Abyss (1989), Terminator2: Judgment Day (1991) and three years later, True Lies. Like Avatar, Titanic is a love story. Many people predicted the film would be a failure when Cameron began to make Titanic in 1997.Cameron proved them wrong when Titanic broke box office records all over the world and swept the Academy Awards, winning an unprecedented 11 Oscars.

Avatar, a science fiction film, based on a script Cameron wrote in 1994, is the first big budget action film shot in 3D, using revolutionary camera technology Cameron developed himself. The technologies used in Avatar are expected to become a part of mainstream filmmaking in five years.

57. He probably majored in __________ when Cameron studied in Fullerton College.

A. physics

B. music

C. filmmaking

D. painting

58. Which of the following films is Cameron’s turning point in his directing career?

A. Piranha Ⅱ: The Spawning

D. The Terminator

59. Both Avatar and Titanic share the feature that ________________.

A. they tell a love story

B. they were made 3D

C. they are science fiction films

D. they are based on real stories

60. Which of the following is NOT TRUE of Cameron?

A. He attended a film institute when he was 18.

Is There Life on Earth?

There was great excitement on the planet of Venus this week. For the first time Venusian

scientists managed to

land a satellite on the planet Earth, and it has been sending back signals as well as photographs ever since.

The satellite was directed into an area known as Manhattan (named after the great Venusian astronomer Prof.

Manhattan, who first discovered it with his telescope 20,000 light years ago).

Because of excellent weather conditions and extremely strong signals, Venusian scientists were able to get

valuable information as to the feasibility (可行性) of a manned flying saucer landing on Earth. A press conference was held

at the Venus Institute of Technology.

"We have come to the conclusion, based on last week's satellite landing," Prof. Zog said, "that there is no life

on Earth."

"How do you know this?" the science reporter of the Venus Evening Star asked.

"For onething, Earth's surface in the area of Manhattan is composed of solid concrete (混泥土) and nothing

can grow there. For another, the atmosphere is filled with carbon monoxide and other deadly gases and nobody

could possibly breathe this air and survive."

"What does this mean as far as our flying sauce program is concerned?"

"We shall have to take our own oxygen with us, which means a much heavier flying saucer than we originally

planned."

"Are there any other hazards (危险) that you discovered in your studies?"

"Take a look at this photo. You see this dark black cloud hovering over the surface of Earth? We call this

the Consolidated Edison Belt. We don't know what it is made of, but it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall

have to make further tests before we send a Venus Being there."

"Over here you will notice what seems to be a river, but the satellite findings indicate it is polluted and the water

is unfit to drink. This means we shall have to carry our own water, which will add even greater weight to the saucer."

"Sir, what are all those tiny black spots on the photographs?"

"We're not certain. They seem to be metal particles (粒子) that move along certain paths. They emit gases,

make noise and keep crashing into each other. There are so many of these paths and so many metal particles

that it is impossible to land a flying saucer without its being smashed by one."

"What are those stalagmite (石笋) projections sticking up?"

"They're some type of granite formations that give off light at night. Prof. Glom has named them skyscrapers since

they seem to be scraping the skies."

"If all you say is true, won't this set back the flying saucer program several years?"

"Yes, but we shall proceed as soon as the Grubstart gives us the added funds."

"Prof. Zog, why are we spending billions and billions of zilches to land a flying saucer on Earth when there is no

life there?

"Because if we Venusians can learn to breathe in an Earth atmosphere, then we can live anywhere."

61. According to Prof. Zog, the Venusians will have to take their own oxygen with them when they carry out their

flying Saucer program because ___________. .

A. they need it on their way to the planet of earth.

B. the earth’s atmosphere is filled with deadly gases.

C. oxygen is far from enough in the area of Manhattan.

D. there is no air on the planet of Earth.

62. The “dark black cloud” in the 10th paragraph indicates _____________.

A. the polluted air hovering over the surface of Earth

B. the mass of tiny drops of water floating above Earth

C. the mass of small things moving through the air

D. the dark clouds gathering before a storm breaks

63. The author wishes to call our attention to the fact that ____________.

A. modern man has polluted his environment to such an extent that he may destroy himself if he carries

on like this

B. there is no point in spending billions and billions of zilches to land a flying saucer on Earth

C. pollution has become so serious a problem on Earth that even Venusians find life

there unbearable

D. it is difficult, if not altogether impossible, to land a manned flying saucer on Earth

64. The tone of this essay is ______________.

A. hopeless and objective

B. serious and critical (批评的)

C. humorous and satirical (讽刺的)

The October of Hangzhou, a most fascinating city, is amazing. The moment you set

I suggest you start by taking a boat trip on the West Lake where you may admire the beautiful sights around it. Then you can visit some places of interest, such as, museums, famous temples and natural parks. Wandering around the walking street is
