Impression of a book of《Great Expectations》
After Reading 《Great Expectations》

After Reading Great ExpectationsAfter reading,i think that it was the great expectations that made the pip suffer many sorrows. The expectations, which were first aroused by Miss Havisham,a woman who wanted to take revenge on the all men. However, as the days went by ,I hold that pip started to be immersed in his great expectations happily. So,when he lived in London,he enjoyed the prosperity of London very much.He started to spend lavishly. The great expectations ,in my opinion, are similar to the fancy. The fame, the wealth, the love and so.on ,all of these can make us confused or even changed. I think of another man---Gatsby.He and pip,the two man were both lived in their fancy .They both thought that the money could buy the love. So, when the pip had lived in London for a certain time, his mind changed gradually. For example,he felt a little shamed of the Joe who was his the most closest friend. And from then on ,there was a gap between Joe and him.In my view, pip is a person who easily influenced by circumstance. If everything went as before,I guess that he would be more ostentatious and indifferent. However, everything changed when the convict came to London. When he knew that the convict was the person who had helped him and Estella could not be him,he was confused anddepressed. His expectations were at the end,but he was a kind person. So,he made many efforts to help the convict to escape. Because of these sorrows, he understood that the money could not make his expectations come true.He changed again and became more mature and more responsible.Another thing I want to mention is that when Joe came to take care of pip,he called pip his name. But when pip recovered,he called him sir. It reveals that the sense of hierarchy in Britain was very serious. The poor and the noble were not equal. So, the pip wanted to be a gentleman to match the Estella.Estella preferred to marry a rich man who was rude ,which was also because of the sense of hierarchy. So,in my view,it was the sense of hierarchy that caused these tragedies.Another example i want to site is Wuthering Heights.Catherine did not marry Heathcliff who she loved ,because she thought it would degrade her identity. So,from this ,i infer that the sense of hierarchy was rooted in the heart of the British, and it restricted their behavior and mind.。
Great Expectations(远大前程) Summary

Great Expectations SummaryGreat Expectations is the story of Pip, an orphan boy adopted by a blacksmith's family, who has good luck and great expectations, and then loses both his luck and his expectations. Through this rise and fall, however, Pip learns how to find happiness. He learns the meaning of friendship and the meaning of love and, of course, becomes a better person for it.The story opens with the narrator, Pip, who introduces himself and describes a much younger Pip staring at the gravestones of his parents. This tiny, shivering bundle of a boy is suddenly terrified by a man dressed in a prison uniform. The man tells Pip that if he wants to live, he'll go down to his house and bring him back some food and a file for the shackle on his leg.Pip runs home to his sister, Mrs. Joe Gragery, and his adoptive father, Joe Gragery. Mrs. Joe is a loud, angry, nagging woman who constantly reminds Pip and her husband Joe of the difficulties she has gone through to raise Pip and take care of the house. Pip finds solace from these rages in Joe, who is more his equal than a paternal figure, and they are united under a common oppression.Pip steals food and a pork pie from the pantry shelf and a file from Joe's forge and brings them back to the escaped convict the next morning. Soon thereafter, Pip watches the man get caught by soldiers and the whole event soon disappears from his young mind.Mrs. Joe comes home one evening, quite excited, and proclaims that Pip is going to "play" for Miss Havisham, "a rich and grim lady who lived in a large and dismal house."Pip is brought to Miss Havisham's place, a mansion called the "Satis House," where sunshine never enters. He meets a girl about his age, Estella, "who was very pretty and seemed very proud." Pip instantly falls in love with her and will love her the rest of the story. He then meets Miss Havisham, a willowy, yellowed old woman dressed in an old wedding gown. Miss Havisham seems most happy when Estella insults Pip's coarse hands and his thick boots as they play.Pip is insulted, but thinks there is something wrong with him. He vows to change, to become uncommon, and to become a gentleman.Pip continues to visit Estella and Miss Havisham for eight months and learns more about their strange life. Miss Havisham brings him into a great banquet hall where a table is set with food and large wedding cake. But the food and the cake are years old, untouched except by a vast array of rats, beetles and spiders which crawl freely through the room. Her relatives all come to see her on the same day of the year: her birthday and wedding day, the day when the cake was set out and the clocks were stopped many years before; i.e. the day Miss Havisham stopped living.Pip begins to dream what life would be like if he were a gentleman and wealthy. This dream ends when Miss Havisham asks Pip to bring Joe to visit her, in order that he may start his indenture as a blacksmith. Miss Havisham gives Joe twenty five pounds for Pip's service to her and says good-bye.Pip explains his misery to his readers: he is ashamed of his home, ashamed of his trade. He wants to be uncommon, he wants to be a gentleman. He wants to be a part of the environment that he had a small taste of at the Manor House.Early in his indenture, Mrs. Joe is found lying unconscious, knocked senseless by some unknown assailant. She has suffered some serious brain damage, having lost much of voice, her hearing, and her memory. Furthermore, her "temper was greatly improved, and she was patient." To help with the housework and to take care of Mrs. Joe, Biddy, a young orphan friend of Pip's, moves into the house. The years pass quickly. It is the fourth year of Pip's apprenticeship and he is sitting with Joe at the pub when they are approached by a stranger. Pip recognizes him, and his "smell of soap," as a man he had once run into at Miss Havisham's house years before.Back at the house, the man, Jaggers, explains that Pip now has "great expectations." He is to be given a large monthly stipend, administered by Jaggers who is a lawyer. The benefactor, however, does not want to be known and is to remain a mystery.Pip spends an uncomfortable evening with Biddy and Joe, then retires to bed. There, despite having all his dreams come true, he finds himself feeling very lonely. Pip visits Miss Havisham who hints subtly that she is his unknown sponsor.Pip goes to live in London and meets Wemmick, Jagger's square-mouth clerk. Wemmick brings Pip to Bernard's Inn, where Pip will live for the next five years with Matthew Pocket's son Herbert, a cheerful young gentleman that becomes one of Pip's best friends. From Herbert, Pips finds out that Miss Havisham adopted Estella and raised her to wreak revenge on the male gender by making them fall in love with her, and then breaking their hearts.Pip is invited to dinner at Wemmick's whose slogan seems to be "Office is one thing, private life is another." Indeed, Wemmick has a fantastical private life. Although he lives in a small cottage, the cottage has been modified to look a bit like a castle, complete with moat, drawbridge, and a firing cannon. The next day, Jaggers himself invites Pip and friends to dinner. Pip, on Wemmick's suggestion, looks carefully at Jagger's servant woman -- a "tigress" according to Wemmick. She is about forty, and seems to regard Jaggers with a mix of fear and duty.Pip journeys back to the Satis House to see Miss Havisham and Estella, who is now older and so much more beautiful that he doesn't recognize her at first. Facing her now, he slips back "into the coarse and common voice" of his youth and she, in return, treats him like the boy he used to be. Pip sees something strikingly familiar in Estella's face. He can't quite place the look, but an expression on her face reminds him of someone.Pip stays away from Joe and Biddy's house and the forge, but walks around town, enjoying the admiring looks he gets from his past neighbors.Soon thereafter, a letter for Pip announces the death of Mrs. Joe Gragery. Pip returns home again to attend the funeral. Later, Joe and Pip sit comfortably by the fire like times of old. Biddy insinuates that Pip will not be returning soon as he promises and he leaves insulted. Back in London, Pip asks Wemmick for advice on how to give Herbert some of his yearly stipend anonymously.Narrator Pip describes his relationship to Estella while she lived in the city: "I suffered every kind and degree of torture that Estella could cause me," he says. Pip finds out that Drummle, the most repulsive of his acquaintances, has begun courting Estella.Years go by and Pip is still living the same wasteful life of a wealthy young man in the city. A rough sea-worn man of sixty comes to Pip's home on a stormy night soon after Pip's twenty-fourth birthday. Pip invites him in, treats him with courteous disdain, but then begins to recognize him as the convict that he fed in the marshes when he was a child. The man, Magwitch, reveals that he is Pip's benefactor. Since the day that Pip helped him, he swore to himself that every cent he earned would go to Pip."I've made a gentleman out of you," the man exclaims. Pip is horrified. All of his expectations are demolished. There is no grand design by Miss Havisham to make Pip happy and rich, living in harmonious marriage to Estella. The convict tells Pip that he has come back to see him under threat of his life, since the law will execute him if they find him in England. Pip is disgusted with him, but wants to protect him and make sure he isn't found and put to death. Herbert and Pip decide that Pip will try and convince Magwitch to leave England with him.Magwitch tells them the story of his life. From a very young age, he was alone and got into trouble. In one of his brief stints actually out of jail, Magwitch met a young well-to-do gentleman named Compeyson who had his hand in everything illegal: swindling, forgery, and other white collar crime. Compeyson recruited Magwitch to do his dirty work and landed Magwitch into trouble with the law. Magwitch hates the man. Herbert passes a note to Pip telling him that Compeyson was the name of the man who left Miss Havisham on her wedding day.Pip goes back to Satis House and finds Miss Havisham and Estella in the same banquet room. Pip breaks down and confesses his love for Estella. Estella tells him straight that she is incapable of love -- she has warned him of as much before -- and she will soon be married to Drummle.Back in London, Wemmick tells Pip things he has learned from the prisoners at Newgate. Pip is being watched, he says, and may be in some danger. As well, Compeyson has made his presence known in London. Wemmick has already warned Herbert as well. Heeding the warning, Herbert has hidden Magwitch in his fiancé Clara's house.Pip has dinner with Jaggers and Wemmick at Jaggers' home. During the dinner, Pip finally realizes the similarities between Estella and Jaggers' servant woman. Jaggers' servant woman is Estella's mother! On their way home together, Wemmick tells the story of Jaggers' servant woman. It was Jaggers' first big break-through case, the case that made him. He was defending this woman in a case where she was accused of killing another woman by strangulation. The woman was also said to have killed her own child, a girl, at about the same time as the murder.Miss Havisham asks Pip to come visit her. He finds her again sitting by the fire, but this time she looks very lonely. Pip tells her how he was giving some of his money to help Herbert with his future, but now must stop since he himself is no longer taking money from his benefactor. Miss Havisham wants to help, and she gives Pip nine hundred pounds to help Herbert out. She then asks Pip for forgiveness. Pip tells her she is already forgiven and that he needs too much forgiving himself not to be able to forgive others.Pip goes for a walk around the garden then comes back to find Miss Havisham on fire! Pip puts the fire out, burning himself badly in the process. The doctors come and announce that she will live.Pip goes home and Herbert takes care of his burns. Herbert has been spending some time with Magwitch at Clara's and has been told the whole Magwitch story. Magwitch was the husband of Jaggers' servant woman, the Tigress. The woman had come to Magwitch on the day she murdered the other woman and told him she was going to kill their child and that Magwitch would never see her. And Magwitch never did. Pip puts is all together and tells Herbert that Magwitch is Estella's father. It is time to escape with Magwitch. Herbert and Pip get up the next morning and start rowing down the river, picking up Magwitch at the preappointed time. They are within a few feet of a steamer that they hope to board when another boat pulls alongside to stop them. In the confusion, Pip sees Compeyson leading the other boat, but the steamer is on top of them. The steamer crushes Pip's boat, Compeyson and Magwitch disappear under water, and Pip and Herbert find themselves in a police boat of sorts. Magwitch finally comes up from the water. He and Compeyson wrestled for a while, but Magwitch had let him go and he is presumably drowned. Once again, Magwitch is shackled and arrested.Magwitch is in jail and quite ill. Pip attends to the ailing Magwitch daily in prison. Pip whispers to him one day that the daughter he thought was dead is quite alive. "She is a lady and very beautiful," Pip says. "And I love her." Magwitch gives up the ghost.Pip falls into a fever for nearly a month. Creditors and Joe fall in and out of his dreams and his reality. Finally, he regains his senses and sees that, indeed, Joe has been there the whole time, nursing him back to health. Joe tells him that Miss Havisham died during his illness, that she leftEstella nearly all, and Matthew Pocket a great deal. Joe slips away one morning leaving only a note. Pip discovers that Joe has paid off all his debtors.Pip is committed to returning to Joe, asking for forgiveness for everything he has done, and to ask Biddy to marry him. Pip goes to Joe and indeed finds happiness -- but the happiness is Joe and Biddy's. It is their wedding day. Pip wishes them well, truly, and asks them for their forgiveness in all his actions. They happily give it.Pip goes to work for Herbert's' firm and lives with the now married Clara and Herbert. Within a year, he becomes a partner. He pays off his debts and works hard.Eleven years later, Pip returns from his work overseas. He visits Joe and Biddy and meets their son, a little Pip, sitting by the fire with Joe just like Pip himself did years ago. Pip tells Biddy that he is quite the settled old bachelor, living with Clara and Herbert and he thinks he will never marry. Nevertheless, he goes to the Satis House that night to think once again of the girl who got away. And there he meets Estella. Drummle treated her roughly and recently died. She tells Pip that she has learned the feeling of heartbreak the hard way and now seeks his forgiveness for what she did to him. The two walk out of the garden hand in hand, and Pip "saw the shadow of no parting from her."。
远大前程英文读后感

远大前程英文读后感After reading the book "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens, I was deeply moved by the protagonist Pip's journey of self-discovery and growth. The novel tells the story of a young boy named Pip who dreams of a better life and strives to become a gentleman. Throughout his journey, Pip encounters various challenges and learns valuable lessons about love, friendship, and the true meaning of success. One of the most striking aspects of the book is its exploration of social class and ambition. Pip's desire to climb the social ladder and attain wealth and status reflects the universal human aspiration for a better future. However, as the story unfolds, Pip comes to realize that true fulfillment cannot be found in material wealth alone. His experiences with the kind-hearted blacksmith Joe and the enigmatic Miss Havisham teach him that genuine happiness comes from meaningful relationships and inner contentment. Moreover, the novel delves into the theme of forgiveness and redemption. Pip's relationship with the convict Magwitch, who turns out to be his secret benefactor, highlights the transformative power of forgiveness. Despite his initial shock and repulsion, Pip eventually comes to see Magwitch as a flawed yet sympathetic human being deserving of compassion. This journey towards understanding and forgiveness not only changes Pip's perspective on life but also allows him to find peace within himself. In addition, the book offers a poignant portrayal of unrequited love and the consequences of pride and vanity. Pip's infatuation with the beautiful but cold-hearted Estella leads him to neglect the genuine affection of those who truly care for him. Estella's inability to love stems from her own upbringing and the manipulation of Miss Havisham, serving as a cautionary tale about the destructive nature of harboring resentment and refusing to open one's heart to others.Overall, "Great Expectations" is a timeless classic that continues to resonate with readers across generations. Its themes of ambition, forgiveness, and the complexity of human relationships are as relevant today as they were when the novel was first published.Through Pip's emotional and moral development, the book imparts valuable lessons about the importance of humility, empathy, and the pursuit of genuine happiness. In conclusion, "Great Expectations" is a thought-provoking and emotionally rich novel that has left a lasting impression on me. Its exploration of the human condition and the universal quest for fulfillment makes it a must-read for anyone seeking insight into the complexities of life. Charles Dickens' masterful storytelling and profound insights have solidified this book as a literary masterpiece that will continue to inspire and captivate readers for years to come.。

In
1827, he worked as a clerk in a law firm, and later as a newspaper reporter .

the age of 18,he read the works of William Shakespeare and other English writers with great interest. In 1830, he met his first love, Maria Beadnell. In 1836, he married Catherine Thomson Hogarth. They had 10 children. In 1858,he divorced Catherine and lived secretly with an actress Ellen Ternen.
As Dickens began writing Great Expectations, he undertook huge changes of his life. He had separated from his wife, Catherine Dickens, and was keeping secret an affair with a much younger woman, Ellen Ternan. However, economic situations and the idea of romance dictated Great Expectations's design and implementation.

GreatExpectations

Great Expectations,
As the night was fast falling, and as the moon, being past the full, would not rise early, we held a little council: a short one, for clearly our course was to lie by at the first lonely tavern we could find. So, they plied their oars once more, and I looked out for anything like a house. Thus we held on, speaking little, for four or five dull miles. It was very cold, and, a collier coming by us, with her gallery-fire smoking and flaring, looked like a comfortable home. The night was as dark by this time as it would be until morning; and what li ght we had, seemed to come more from the river than the sky, as the oars in their dipping stuck at a few reflected stars.[注释]council:An assembly of persons called together for consultation, deliberation, or discussion讨论会议tavern:酒馆, 客栈plied their oars:使劲划起桨来collier:运煤船gallery-fire:厨房[参考译文]孤星血泪天黑得很快,偏巧这天又是下弦月,月亮不会很早升起。
Great Expectation

Great ExpectationGreat expectation is one of the most famous educational novels. It was written by english novelist Charles Dickens in his later years. He was born in a navy family .Dickens lined in the transition period of the United Kingdom from the semi-feudal society to the industrial capitalist society. His works describe the wide aspects of social life and depict vividly the representation figures from all levels of society. He showed sympathy for the suffering of working people and gave support to their resisting struggle. The novel narrates the experience of protagonist called Pip who is an orphan and raised by his ill-temper sister. Luckily, his brother-in-law is a kind black smith and treats him as his own sibling. When he was a little child, he helped an escaped prisoner who offers lots of money for him stealthily in the future. Soon he was selected to accompany a wealthy girl called Estella. From then on, Pip did not want to live a simple life any longer. He was eager to become a gentleman in order to maintain his self-esteem and get married with Estella. But later Pip got a chance to London with a sudden fortune. In London, Pip squandered wantonly and lived as a nobleman. He even felt shameful for the coming of Joe and desperately wanted to get rid of his former status. However, the prisoner was arrested and all of his possession were confiscated. So Pip become a poor man again and had to come back to his hometown. He come to realize that what is a true life. In real life, some people wholeheartedly want to pursue the vigorous and wealthy life; some prefer to enjoy the smooth and steady life. However, no matter what kind of life we choose, we all need to take if one step at a time and do our best, not expecting to get to ultimate with one leap. The key is making a good plan and heading in this direction. That way we won’t care whether we become the so-called ‘ Gentleman’. Instead, we receive the meaning of life and the joy of life.Actually, each of us just like Pip will set future goals for ourself and want to realize self-social values. At first Pip was a kind-hearted and simple boy. Although he was poor and tortured by his ill-temper sister, he still felt happy and content with the life he owned. However, when he began to get the touch of those who are from upper class, a lot of change existed in him. He was anxious to achieve quick success and get instant benefits. In the book, i more like Pip’s brother-in-law Jow who is a real gentleman all the time despite his low social status. It tells us that if our life was controlled by others, everything we own is just like bubble that could’t last long. Now, we survive in the world based on knowledge and diligence. The more knowledge we learn and the more diligence we pay, the more excellent future we can make. As a student, what i have in material life is most dependent on my parents. I have no right to complain about ordinary family if i want to have a ‘great expectation’, i am supposed to take control of my own life, and spare no pains to work hard because my future is uncertain and it depends on me.WaldenHenry David ThoreauHenry David Thoreau is one of the most accomplished American writers in the 19th century. As a person, he has only one goal------to live as honestly and wisely as he could. In 1845, he built a small house on the shoreside of Walden Pond to live in alone. He wrote the book Walden about the experience. Walden has been published for hundreds of editions so far. It is still read by people from every corner of the word. Thoreau once said ‘The more wealth, the less virtue. Putting your heart in nature can truly produce imagination and wisdom’.Walden is a wonderful book which is full of peace, equality and wit. The book keeps a record of Thoreau’s life in Walden for two years. He lives very simply and he has no wife, no friend and no servants. He builds a wood house to live in. He grows vegetable for food to eat. He makes simple clothes to wear. He uses his hand made boat to trip. All in all, he tries his best to make the most use of nature and own ability. Thoreau devotes most of his time to observing nature, reading and writing. He enjoys the simply life in close contact with nature. After reading the book, i am wondering why dose Thoreau want to live on the in the Industrialized Age. He was worried about the fact that the industrial civilization and noisy society will squeeze and destroy humanity. He was tried of the mechanized life so that he wanted to stay in a peaceful place far away from modern society. The ideal that when human live simply and plainly, can they enjoy the ease and joy of deep heart buries in Thoreau’s mind. He considers the experience in Walden as a try to live in seclusion. Perhaps many people think he has a strong passive feeling and likes to alone. It absolutely misinterprets his intentions. His behavior of living in forest nearby Walden is not the retirement from the world and live a sequestered life. He is just eager to live simply and freely. Thoreau is against the slavery, invasion and industrialization.Thoreau tells people not to be confused by the complex world, not to keep constantly on the run for material enjoyment, and thus lose the direction and meaning of life. He thinks if people can live a peace of mind. The book stars in spring then in summer, autumn and winter. It ends with the spring too. This is a life cycle. The ending is also a starting point and life begins to recover.‘The ancient philosophers, Chinese, Hindoo, Persian and Greek, were a class than which none has been poorer in outward riches, none so rich in inward’. This is one of my favourite sentences in the book. It emphasizes the important of inner richness instead of the external wealth. Maybe you are a poor man but you can still become a nobleman in mentality. Our life will become more meaningful, more objective, more substantial as long as we have a ‘ Walden’ in heart. This is the true meaning of Walden that the author really wants to tell us. I believe people who appreciate Thoreau and Walden are not only like the genius of sentences in his writing, but also falling in love with the beauty of nature and the quiet of soul.。

great expectations 远大前程
It goes without saying that the word “expectation” in the book title c ontains more than one layer of meaning. The simplest reference is the large sums of heritage Pip gets and the dreamed succeeding social status. For Pip, the superior life and reputable social status is the aim and center of his life, thus after he indeed enters into the upper class, he has the feeling of aversion towards lower class people, including his own family members. Such material fulfillment can be seen as a surface layer of the meaning of “expectation”.From another perspective, Pip wants to regard himself as a true gentleman, yet during the ascending on the social ladder, he has lost his morality and basic sympathy for working people. For example, in Pip’s childhood, he helped the criminal who eventually realized Pip’s dream of being a higher class people, however, after he visited the prison after he became a gentleman, he expressed his detestation for those criminals, and he even wanted to exhale the air of prison from his lung because he felt he had been contaminated. Therefore, it is reasonable when he knows that all of his wealth comes from a criminal, his psychological world collapse, and that is the moment when his expectation perishes. In addition, the expectation also contains the sarcasm of Charles Dickens for the pure monetary relationship between people. In Victoria’s era, capitalists have become the dominant class; the essence of capitalism determined the purely material relationship. People were driven for financial interest by all means, and the comparatively simple and moral social connection was replaced. The word “great” is quite irony and blurry, and for me, it seems that Dickens use “great”to indicate capitalism, which means even though capitalistic system seems to thrive and prosper, it will definitely fade and become the product of history.。

Impression of a book of《Great Expectations》《Great expectations》was Dickens late work, was also the most mature of his works. The title was ironic, it told the story of an orphan, Pip wanted to be a gentleman's story of disillusionment, he failed as a gentleman . Book to extremely wonderful story closely linked to the reader's heartstrings, vividly described a suffering and struggled with constant fate of orphans Pip's psychological course.
《Great expectations》of the story had its own way, to let the reader feel a fascinating one . The protagonist of the book's Pip, but also contacted with other characters a common thread. Environment could change people's fate. Pip was an example. In the beginning, one day was a child is how naive, believe a person easily, compassionate. One day, however, a fate was met the girl like a queen. It changed his live. He began to look down on yourself, started to their home environment and born feel inferior. Pip paid out so much for the love. She didn't treat him well and even that she did not respect him at all! She put the food for him as a dog,but he didn't hate her. On the contrary, he left from his home and his friends. He just wanted to be a gentleman. He abandoned a lot than he got. I couldn't understand why he did it in this way. I thought it was not worth at all. If one person did not like you or not respected you,you needn't do everything for her. So it made me quite sad.I felt sorry for Pip. Pip asked Herbert teach him manners and rules, showed that he was eager to want to be a man in London. However, no matter how, in the Pip's heart good, still could be realized. He secretly money fund Herbert's career, it showed that he was a kind person, righteousness and generosity to friends, not stingy. In the passage of time, people began to change, throughout to write was very natural. Finally everyone lived a ordinary and real life, this was what a perfect ending.
The title of this book is 《Great expectations》which made an impression on us that the character would have great expectations just as the title goes. But in fact this title had a tone of sarcastic on the other way around. This story full of quirkiness from the very beginning to the end, the relations among characters were anfractuous as well which actually attracted me a lot. this novel had achieved a step o f highest, Dicken had made this writing plain and fluent as well, which surely could attract lots of readers and high
comments. To be frank, I really impressed by this art of beauty. So I liked Dicken’s works very much.《Great expectations》was not a strong educational novel, the author attempts through this novel presented readers with no truth, but still was worth us to think seriously about this novel.。
