The following true story will deeply touch your soul!

An amazing thing happened in South Africa when 31 elephants made a journey to pay their

last respects. How did they know? Something informed them that their hero — the man who had

bravely rescued them and many other animals—had left for ever.

Two days after his passing, the wild elephants showed up at his home led by two large ones.

Separate wild herds arrived to say goodbye to their beloved friend. A total of 31 elephants had

patiently walked over 12 miles to reach his home. Witnessing this, humans were amazed not only

because of the intelligence that these elephants sensed Lawrence’s death but also because of the emotion the beloved animals showed in such an organized way.

Walking slowly for days —they made their way from their habitat in the wild bush to his

living place. Lawrence’s wife, Francoise, was especially moved, knowing that the elephants had

not been to his house for well over 3 years! But yet they knew where they were going and they

seemed to know why they were going to Lawrence’s home. The elephants obviously wanted to

pay their deep respects, honoring their human friend who had saved their lives一so much respect

that they stayed for 2 days without eating anything.

After honoring Lawrence Anthony in the only way they could —in this touching and

memorable tribute (悼念)to the man — these creatures had showed they are wiser and more loyal

than the human race will ever be or ever realize. Then one morning, they left, making their long

journey back home.

Finding out the main idea of a story or paragraph can be a challenge for middle school students. There are activities that work well in the classroom to improve students’ understanding of the main idea.

A quick way to practice identifying main ideas is to have students orally state the main point

of a passage. You can read a short paragraph from a story for this activity. After reading the passage,a student volunteer gives a verbal( 口头的)summary of it. The rest of the class decide the student stated the main idea or the main focus of the passage. Working together as a group helps the students see the process of identifying the main idea.

Using a picture to practice the main idea is an efficient review. It also works well for middle school students struggling with the concept . A picture with several details is selected from a book

or a magazine. The students write down what is happening in the picture. They should write the overall(全面的)point of the picture, which represents its main idea. They can then write details in the picture that provide evidence of the main idea.

The title of an article or a story often relates to its main idea. Having students come up with a title for a paragraph or story they hear is a good method of teaching the main idea. You’ll want to keep the middle school students from seeing the cover of the book or title of the article. After reading it to them, the students write a title that fits the main idea of the passage. Sharing the titles gives students a chance to discuss their thought processes.

Although identifying the main idea is a tough task, sticking with the activities mentioned above will make it easier.

24.What is a fast way to find out the main idea?

A. To use a picture to practice the main idea.

B. To have students give main ideas orally.

C. To read the passage freely.

D. To have students work together.

25. How can readers get correct main ideas according to the passage?

A. Learn to make up stories.

B. Find several details in the picture.

C. Learn to come up with a proper title.

D. Organize a lot of activities.

26.The passage is probably written for______

A. schools

B. parents

C. teachers

D. students

27. Which of the following is the structure(结构)of this article?

A.①II②③④II⑤

B①II②③④⑤

C.①②③④II⑤

D. ①II②③II④⑤

A person is a person, no matter how small, Theodor Seuss Geisel,Dr. Seuss,

would say. Children want the same things as we want. To laugh, to be

challenged, to be entertained and delighted.

Brilliant, humorous, and always respectful of children, Dr. Seuss attracted four generations of

youngsters and parents. In the process, he helped millions of kids learn to read.

Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 2, 1904. After

graduating from Dartmouth College in 1925, he went to Oxford University, intending to acquire a degree in literature. At Oxford, Geisel met Helen Palmer, whom he married in 1927.

Horton Hatches the Egg (1940).

As the winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984, an academy Award, three Emmy Awards, Three Grammy Awards, and three Caldecott Honors, Geisel wrote and illustrated 44 books. While Theodor Geisel died on September 24, 1991, Dr. Seuss lives on, inspiring generations of children

More and more Africans are using text messages, e-mail and social media to communicate. In Senegal, educators are using new technologies to teach women to read. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched the program in Senegal two years ago. But UNESCO officials are now expanding it to as many as six other African

countries.

Mariama Daffe sits in front of a television at her home in a community near Senegal's capital Dakar. She is learning to write and work with numbers. Ms. Daffe started this home-study program a year ago. She was 39 years old at the time.

The Ministry of Education joined with UNESCO to create these training modules for literacy

(读写能力).The program appears daily on state television. Women taking part say these lessons have made them more independent by grasping basic reading and writing skills.

Mariama Daffe says, "These days I have my mobile telephone, and I can read messages and I can send messages, too."

Ms. Daffe finishes her lesson and starts preparing dinner for her husband and three children. She says the TV programs are convenient. She studies three modules a week, yet she has a full-time job and travels two hours by bus every day.

At-home study programs are easy to operate and not costly. That makes them especially useful for a place like Senegal, which has limited money to teach literacy.

But some women prefer the classroom experience. Ten minutes down the road from Mariama Daffe’s home, women write on a chalkboard at the local elementary school. Thirty-nine-year-old Astou Keita says it is never too late to learn.

32. What is the meaning of the underlined word “launched ” ?

Children just want to have fun! Having your children occupied with family activity is

easy. 36 Here is how to make an experience fun and engaging for young children.

37 There are very few activities that can't be turned into a game when you are trying to

engage children. A game just means that you are trying to see how well you can do something, or

you are challenging yourselves to reach a goal, or you are showing off what you can already do.

Friendly competition with no real losers will quickly engage children with an activity. A simple

phrase like “let’s see how fast we can do this ...”will soon allow you to catch the children’s f

ull attention.

Stories are always interesting. Everyone loves stories, and children most of all.38 The best

teachers are the ones who have learned how to make any information into a story. Stories are particularly powerful for teaching life-lessons and moral values, but a creative teacher can turn

even a science lesson into a story.

39 No one likes a lecture and children least of all. The best way to learn is by doing and

children in particular respond really well to getting a chance to try something for themselves.

So include them! Even if you are telling a story, you can get them to act out some of the parts.

Provide real experiences wherever you can. 40 Reading about animals is no substitute

for meeting real live animals. Even if you can't get outdoors, you can still offer a real life experience ---crafts are great for this, so are hands-on science experiments and dramatic

role-plays.

A. Children love what they can touch and taste and smell.

B. But making a lesson or family activity fun can take some work!

C. Stories can distract children ’s attention.

D. Give the children an active role.

E. Make a game out of it.

F. A well-told story will always engage children's attention,

G. Make a try for yourself.
