From my point of view, diploma is much more significant than competence. The first factor, a large number of corporations ignore the resumes submitted by general university graduates, that is to say, only by diploma can we obtain the opportunity of entering these companies. The second factor, we are at the top period of learning skill, which means getting diploma will be harder and harder for us to gain while competence will be the opposite with age growing and experience getting. The third factor, we find ourselves now living in a new era which millions students are strives to achieve higher diploma, yet we still possess nothing to compete with them, no need to mention the chance of showing our competence.
In summary, it is diploma that determines your height of starting line. A part of graduates with competence instead of diploma are never capable of reaching the starting line whom with diploma.
