University and Campus Life

Chen:Now, let’s talk about our campus life. I like our library best. There are so many books there. I like reading books, and there are many old books which cannot be easily found in book shops. The building looks like a castle; it seems the building is very large and I always get lost in library. Wu:Woo, you are so brave. I don’t think it’s safe to stay in the library. I always hung around in the campus, especially in summer evening. The old building looks very grand in the dim light of sunset. And I can always meet some friends, it feels good to meet a friend by accident and have a free chat with him. Dong: Yeah, I always see you in the campus at night. I like hung around too. While, I like do sports better, such as playing badminton, swimming. I don’t like outdoor sports because I don’t think the air is healthy enough to breath. To be honest, as a hard working man, I spend most of the part-time studying in classrooms. I think it’s really convenient for us to study in our school. The students in the classroom are always very quiet, and you can focus on your books easily. That’s why I can get high marks in almost all the exams. Chen:Err…..I’m not a hard working man; I spend a lot of time reading novels. I don’t like this campus at all, so I always devote myself in the fantastic world created by the writers. On the other hand, I think reading book helps a lot in my study; it improves my imagination a lot. Wu: I spend much time playing guitar, and I’m the rhythm guitar of a rock band called P.A. Our style

i s death metal, and it’s always difficult to play well.

Every member of the band admire the time we play together.

It’s really exciting to play that kind of music. I’m really grateful that our school can provide places to run over our songs and hold concerts. Dong: I can imagine the girls screaming besides the stage. But I can hardly accept that

kind of music. What a happy talk. I’m grate that all of us

will get further education here.

Nations and Traditions

Chen:Let’s talk about some different countrie s. Which country do you like to go for your graduation tour? Wu: I would like to go to Japan. I think Japan is a very strange country. It’s both modern and traditional. There are many shopping centers and bars and there are many temples as well.

Japan is famous for its Fuji Mouton, hot springs and Gasher show. And Japanese food is also very famous because

it’s very healthy, but it’s very expensive. Transportation

is very convenient; you will never worry that you can not by the tickets. It seems that Japanese are all well educated and they are always very polite to each other and Japanese women smell almost all the time. These can make you feel relaxed

and happy. As Japan is a high-tech country, electronic products are very cheep there. And it’s an importan t reason why many Chinese want to visit Japan. Dong:Well, I don’t think Japanese are polite to us Chinese. And sometimes it’s not safe to Chinese. I think Germany is the best choice to me. There are many casuals and churches. Most of them have a long history. And I like old western buildings. I would like to

visit the museums to get to know German history. My major is machinery design manufacturing and automation; many German

universities are the top in this field around the world. The most famous one is Asshen. There is a saying, if Asshen says Asshen is the second best in the world, MIT dare not to say MIT is the first one. If I’m lucky enough, I want to visit Asshen. German beer is well known around the world; I must have a try though I’m not good at dri nking. Chen: I like European countries too. I want to go to France. It’s a beautiful land with romance. The nature scenery is very good. I’m sure I will take many beautiful photos. I am interested in the history of Napoleon’s time. I want to visit the

muse ums to have a further study on the history. I’d like visit the palaces too, especially Fanersai Palace and Luvoe Palace. I know there are many famous paintings and carvings

in the Palaces and I really want to have a look. French dish is very famous and I t hink it’s worth to have a taste. French perfume is very famous, I’d like to buy some for my mother.

Health and Lifestyle

Chen: There are more and more students smoke cigarettes in our dormitory. I think this is a terrible phenomenon. Sometimes we are under pressure, but we should relax ourselves in some other ways. Smoking is bad for both smokers and the people don’t smoke but live besides smokers. And smoking may cause fire disaster. Wu: Yeah, I agree with you.

I never smoke and I hate the smelling. As I play rock music in HIT, many friends around me smoke. I know them well and they suffer from health problems sometime. To be healthy is very important, everybody know this, but few people around us can do well. In HIT, almost all male professors are heavy smokers, and many of them are over weight. All of professors

1.Is it possible for a woman to be a successful mother and have a successful professional career? Should society encourage or discourage women from combining the two? Yes, I think a woman can be a successful mother and have a successful professional career but it is a little difficult. Because women usually are the caregivers for husbands, children and, often, for ageing parents. And even in full-time employment, they are expected to continue to play this role. But I don’t think the two are conflicted. Society should encourage women from combining the two, because man and woman are equal. It is not just mothers’ obligation to care for the children. On the other hand, how difficult to find a job for a divorced woman in such a high-divorce society? Both men and women should learn to balance their work and family. 2. Should University students focus on their specialized areas or fundamental courses? I think university students should focus on their fundamental courses. Specialized areas are based on fundamental courses. For example, how can you build a tall building without a solid foundation? The same is true of learning. Usually the knowledge we learned in university are disjointed from development of society. So when we are applying for jobs after graduation, we may find the professional knowledge we have is out of date. It will be difficult to learn new things without a solid foundation. Despite all the apparent changes, what remains essentially the same are the fundamental courses. I believe fundamental courses are the roots of great innovation. 3.Should students choose their majors to meet their personal needs and interests or the need of society? I think students should choose majors to meet the need of society. Here are some reasons. First, from a personal perspective, the ultimate aim of going to college is to find a job and make money. So what we need to think about is how to meet the requirements of society and enterprises. Only in this way can we find a job easily so that we can realize our value. If we only consider personal needs and interests when choose majors, we are likely to fail to find a job after graduation.

What do you think is the most serious challenge of living in a big city? With the development of economy, the speed of urbanization of our country is faster and faster. The area of cities is larger and larger. More and more people crowd into cities, resulting in larger and larger population of citcities. The abundance of consumer goods in big city indeed bring us much convenience. However, there are also many challenges and pressures living in a big city. Such as crowded transport, dirty air, noisy street and so on. Among these challenges, I believe, the most serious one is the tense pace of life. To get enough consumer goods and live a happy life, We have to work every day to make money. We get up early in the morning and go to work in a hurry even no time to have breakfast. After a day,s busy work, we go home at night and go to sleep. We spend half of our time to work even forget to stop to enjoy our life. Sometimes I think that we are so stupid to devote ourselves to work and forget the purpose we work for. But most of time, we have to do so. So that is the reason for my view. Say something about the impact of horror films on young children. When it comes to horror films, opinions vary from person to person. It is the same to young children. I believe horror films have both positive and negative impact on young children, the point depend on the attitudes of children on horror films. Horror films indeed excite us greatly compared with other films. For children like horror films, watching horror films is an interesting adventure. Kids who always watch horror films would have more curiosity on the world and life. This results that children watching horror films have the spirit of exploration and innovation. However, for those timid and do not like horror films, watching horror films may make them have nightmares. What is worse, it may lead to psychological illness and make them more timid, resulting them afraid of trying unfamiliar things. So it is concluded that if children like horror films, they are admitted to watch them, if they do not like, do not force them to watch. What factors influence you most in your choice of a job? With the increasing of population of our country and the diversification of economy, it is becoming more and more difficult for our young to find a satisfactory job. Too many factors affect us to

Topics for Oral test 1. Which great leader do you admire most? What qualities did/does he/she have? bill gates 2. Which do you cherish more, your friendship with a good friend or your romantic relationship? obviously, friend is easy to make, but lover is kind of hard to seek for. Since relationship between friends might be not that close compared to romantic relationship, I will probably take it serious and cherish this sweet relationship. Also, I believe that my friends will support me and our relationship won’t be tense and freezing because of this. As the Chinese saying goes, once you got a boyfriend or a girlfriend, you may leave your friends out of your mind. I partly agree this, and when I fall in love, especially at the very beginning, I think I will cherish it more than friendship. 3. What factors would you consider first if you were to find a job (even a part-time job)? I will first consider whether this company and the offered position is high potential. I think high potential is a quality that is vital for the company’s future development and its personnel’s self improvement. Every one need a room to promote and realize one’s self-value. Another factor I concern is—its location. I’d like to work and live in big cities because big cities offer so many opportunities and a higher salary while small cities can’t. 4. Whom do you usually turn to when in trouble, vour parents or your friends? They know me better than anyone else and their vision is wide, their thoughts are mature.

THW abolishing patents for life-saving medicines Thank you, pro speaker. Ladies and Gentlemen, good morning. Now, I’d like to provide my statements. For the first aspect, I want to say is the cost. Medicines cost a lot to come to market, patents are the only way to recoup that co st. Bringing a drug to market is expensive. In addition to the costs of scientists and l aboratories to discover and sift through potentially therapeutic compounds in th e first place, demonstrating efficacy and safety to the Food and Drug Administrati on requires costly clinical trials. Without F.D.A. approval, a drug cannot be market ed. Drug manufacturers say that they need to recoup the high cost of drug develo pment by charging high prices during the period they hold effective monopolies. A recent estimate, though contested, put the price of developing a drug from scra tch as high as $2.6 billion. Other estimates suggest it could be as low as $161 mill ion. Either way, it’s a lot of money. Without regulatory constraints, results from s uch an investment could be used by anyone to develop and market drugs. What’smore, In my view Abolishing patents for life-saving medicines would not decline the price of medici nes.The prop have founded their case on the idea that lots of generic producers will be able to produce drugs cheaply if patents are bypassed. However, there needs to be a massive incentive to get these drugs developed in the first place. They cost u p to $800 million to get to market, and this means huge amounts of investment ar e required. Not only does this investment need to be payed back, there needs to b e a promise of strong profit to pay off the risk of such a huge investment being un successfulbecause most drugs never go to market. As patents provide the ability t o charge monopoly pricing, if there was no patent for life-saving drugs there wou ld need to be an even greater incentive to stop companies producing non-life savi ng drugs instead. What this means is that whatever model the prop propose to pr ovide these incentives, it will always be more expensive than allowing a company to patent a product, which at least makes it as valuable as a non-life saving drug. For the second aspect, I think abolish patents for life-saving medicines will lead to non-lifesaving drugs . There are some potentially valuable drugs we‘ll never get drug companies to inve st in — those that cannot be patented. To see evidence of this, just look at the behavior of pharmaceutical firms. It has beendiscovered that drug companies discard many potentially good ideas becaus e they‘re unpatentable. By interviewing academic researchers and industry insid ers and scouring medicinal-chemistry textbooks, Mr. Roin learned that ―pharma ceutical companies systematically screen their drug candidates to exclude the on es lacking strong patent protection.

选择A

Our view is that the pressure of men is more than women in today's society. The fact is that the men’s pressure is far greater than women, not only from a social point of view, from the working point of view, from the families point of view , the society has more demands on men, men are required to have good social communication, excellent work, to earn more money, to take care of their families. Therefore, in contemporary society, men suffer more psychological pressure than women. Our view is that the pressure of women is more than men in today's society。With the development of society, the role of women in society greatly changes. In original ,women only need to assist their husbands and educate the children , Nowadays. A woman not only to take care of the family, and also bear the tremendous pressure from society. Therefore, we detected that in today's society, women suffer greater pressure. In today's society, requirements on men is much higher than women's, under so much competitive pressures, The man have to find a stable job for the family, to earn more money to support his families. Even if he is unhappy at work, he must endure. The reason is once the men lose their jobs, the whole family will be plunged into serious trouble, which makes the man under great pressure, while also not easy to replace unsatisfactory work. Therefore, men suffer greater pressure than women in contemporary society. As you said the society has given us more demands and greater pressure. Just work making us difficult to breathe , moreover modern women not only to work hard, bear enormous social pressure , but also have to undertake almost the entire pressure from family and life. Cooking, washing, taking care of her husband and child every day have made women day and night reversed , combined with the enormous pressure at work, so the modern women under great pressure.
