Passage2

For me, Facebook is about staying in touch with friends, whether that means writing on someone’s ‘wall’or sending them a private message. It’s a useful website for finding long-lost friends, arranging parties and sha ring photos. But that’s not all: Facebook is now being used by all kinds of people for all kinds of reasons!

Do you want to play computer games? Log on to Facebook. There are now thousands of entertaining games and puzzles to help you pass the time. Do you want to find cafés, cinemas and bowling alleys in your area? Log on to Facebook pages that you can join and ‘like’, which makes it very easy to search for fun things to do near you. I think it’s brilliant to have all the information that you want on just one website!

People are now joining Facebook to make professional connections too, either with people who do the same kind of work, or with businesses that are looking for new people to work for them.

It’s a pretty good idea since so many people use Facebook these days, especially young people! Even students log on to Facebook to look for summer or part-time jobs.

And that’s not all! Now there are hundreds of pages about sports teams, TV programmes and pop stars to look at on Facebook. However, I believe the main reason most young people use Facebook is because it’s so easy to let the world know what you think about different things or people, whether it’s about a new film at the cinema or whether you prefer Rihanna with long or short hair. You can even write comments directly on other people’s Facebook pages including some stars’ pages. But you have to be careful because giving your opinion online can be dangerous.

We mustn’t forget that Facebook is meant to be fun and shouldn’t be used for saying bad things about people around us. I recently read a news article about a student who had to leave school because she made rude and unfair comments about a teacher on her Facebook wall. Several other school students have been in trouble for similar comments and opinions. In fact, it really annoys me when I see somebody has written nasty things about another person!

It’s true that Facebook is becoming more and more part of our daily lives for many different reasons, and it can be really helpful as well as being a lot of fun. But, as with all websites, we must be careful about how we use it.

1. What does the writer think of the Facebook?

A. It is easy for finding a long-lost friend

B. It is dangerous for giving one’s opinio n

C. It is mainly used for business reasons these days.

D. It is useful for finding entertainment information.

2. Why does the writer think young people like Facebook so much?

A. It’s a good place to read TV programmes reviews.

B. They can have conversations about their interests.

C. It’s the best place to find information about sports.

D. They like having the chance to give their opinions.

3. The underlined word “nasty”in Paragraph 6 probably means “______”.

A. critical

B. private

C. unpleasant

D. impolite

4. What is the best title of the passage?

A. The use of Facebook

B. The information on Facebook

C. The reasons of using Facebook

D. The suggestions for using Facebook

Passage3

Does Success Come with a High EQ or IQ?

Most students feel that their IQs are what determines(决定)how well they are going to do in life. When they see other students doing better than them, they usually believe that those students have a higher IQ and that there is nothing they can do to change facts. However, new research into EQ suggests that success is not simple the result of a high IQ.

While your IQ tells you how intelligent you are, your EQ tells you how well you use your intelligence.

Professor Salovey who invented the term EQ suggests that when predicting someone's future success, their character, as measured(测量)by EQ tests, might actually matter than their IQs.

It is generally believed that people with high EQs are open to new ideas and have positive attitudes towards life. They are also less likely to be troubled by problems.

People generally believe that a person's IQ is determined by birth. However, most social scientists agree that EQ has a lot to do with education. Some are trying to study the possibility of improving a person's EQ, especially in terms of "people skills", such as understanding and communication.

Professor Mayer, recognized by many as a leading expert in the study of changes to people's EQs, recently said the results of a study on senior high school students. When normal students were introduced to students with disabilities, they found that, afterwards, the normal students were more willing to help people with difficulties. They also showed a better understanding of the disabled students' feelings compared to students who had not been involved in the study. There was also an obvious change in the disabled students' attitudes. They became more positive about life and more willing to try new things.

The results of the study show that EQ is important. To get ahead in the world and lead a happy successful life means getting on with other people and being able to understand and react to the situations in the best way possible. This requires a high EQ, the higher the better. And the fact that it might be possible to raise EQs means that schools need to make sure that their students are receiving the education they really need, and know that their futures are not entirely determined by their IQs.

1. According to the passage, people with high EQs ________________.

A. hate trying new things

B. are determined by birth

C. are more understanding

D. need to improve their IQs

2. What does the phrase "react to" in Paragraph 6 probably mean?

A. Try to refuse to accept.

B. Show some disinterest in.

C. Help others to explain.

D. Behave differently in. 3

3 According to the passage, Professor Mayer probably agrees that ___________________.

A. students with low EQs are more creative and positive toward their lives

B. it is possible for disabled students to improve their EQs with education

C. it is difficult for people with high EQs to solve problems in the best way

D. students with high IQs will be easier to succeed than students with high EQs

4. What is the writer's main purpose in writing the passage?

A. To discuss the meaning of EQ.

B. To stress the importance of EQ.

C. To introduce the discovery of EQ.

D. To question about the tests of EQ.

Passage1

Chinese people started to use hand fans over 2,000 years ago. Then, they were almost the only way to drive the heat away. The Chinese character for the word "fan" has the same sound as the c haracter for “ kindness". Thus, fans are viewed as good luck, charms and expressions of generosity.

The fans came in different shapes and were made from all kinds of materials. Palm (棕桐)leaf fans were cheap and easy to make. Feather fans showed the owner's high position. Sandalwood( 檀香)fans could send out a

sweet smell.

Later, hand fans became far more than just something that could cool people down. They developed into works of art, in which tuanshan-round fans and zheshan-folded fans were the most common.

In the shape of a full moon, the round fans symbolize union and happiness. They had beautiful embroidery(M 绣)featuring birds and flowers on them, representing wealth and longevity. Women, especially those in the imperial palace (皇宫), liked to use them. Such fans were very popular in the Han Dynasty(202 BC-AD 204).

Folding fans were first produced in the Song Dynasty (960 一1279) and became popular in the Ming Dynasty(1368 一1644). They have a history of symbolizing scholarship. Men, especially the literati (文人), used zheshan because they were usually made of paper and they could paint and write poems on them. It was a way for them to show off their skills in literature, painting and calligraphy (书法) . Many things were painted on zheshan, but the most popular choice was usually landscapes.

Today, Chinese people still use these fans, though not many people write or. paint on them any more.
