Unit 3 Topic 3 Section A (Grammar 1b 1a) What were you doing at this time yesterday? 蓝天中学 丁彩霞 Ladies and gentlemen, good morning / afternoon ! I want to say the first period of Unit 3, Topic 3, Section A in junior eight middle school English. I am going to talk about it from 4 parts.

Part 1 Analysis of teaching material 1. This is the first period in Unit 3, Topic 3, Section A. We are going to talk about “What were you doing at this time yesterday?” The students must be interested in it, because it relates to our daily life. And it’s easy to learn because there aren’t too many new words or phrases. We can also learn the Past Continuous Tense by reviewing and comparing the Present Continuous Tense. It provides students a lot of practice to speak English. It is helpful to improve their communication ability. It’s the first section of this topic. If they learn it well, it will help students learn the rest of the topic well. In a word it plays an important part in this unit. 2. Teaching aims and demands: Knowledge aim: (1)To learn the new phrases such as shower, have / take a shower, do some washing , wash some clothes, do some reading, do some cleaning, call sb. to do sth. at this time yesterday, answer the phone. (2) To learn a new telephone language: Hold the line, please. (3) To learn the Past Continuous Tense. Ability aim: To improve students’ communication skills and develop students’ listening, speaking and reading skills. Emotional aim: To appreciate the colourful parts of daily life. Cultivate learning interests. 3. Important and difficult points: Mastering the Past Continuous is the important point. Students usually can’t decide when to use the Past Continuous Tense. So I will design some exercises, lead Ss to pay attention the time adverbials, then ask the students to conclude something about the Past Continuous Tense. Activity 1a is the difficult point. Generally speaking, most students in Grade 8 aren’t willing to speak English with actions in class. So I will prepare some flowers to encourage the students who answer my questions well. On the other hand, I will prepare two short movies for Ss in order that the students can know about the content. It also makes Ss more interested in my class.

Part 2 Teaching & Learning method Teaching method: I will use task-based method. As we know, using is the best way to learn language. And I will apply communicative method, too. Learning method: Let students use the “observation—imitation—practice” way to learn English. Know how to use what we have learned and learn what we will learn. Learn to be a successful English learner. Part 3 Analysis about students Junior eight is an important period for students in every ways. They have to face many changes in life and study. Some of them will find it hard to follow teachers and begin to fall behind. So more attention should be paid to these students. Teachers should try their best to make the lessons interesting and activate different levels of students.

Part 4 Teaching procedures (five fingers teaching steps) Step 1 Review and Lead-in ( 5 minutes ) 1. Greetings and introduction T: Good morning, boys and girls. It’s my first time to meet you, so I want to say “ Nice to meet you”. And I have many beautiful flowers, if you are good enough, I will give it to you. First, let’s look at the pictures. 2. Show some pictures, present the new phrases with present continuous tense. T: In Picture 1, what’s the girl doing ? S1:She is doing some washing. Present them one by one. ( I do this in order to present the new phrases. Ss are able to learn them using what they’ve known. ) 3. Read the phrases 4. Brainstorm: T: We use the present continuous tense to make up the sentences, who can tell me the form of the present continuous tense? S2: be (am/is/are)+doing …

( It leads students to go over the Present Continuous Tense. ) Step 2 Presentation ( mainly learn the Grammar) (10 minutes) 1. The teacher will create a situation. Present the Past Continuous Tense from the Present Continuous Tense. T: I’m teaching here now. But I was teaching in our classroom at this time yesterday. Then, change the subject into “we”, ask the students to complete the sentence. T: What are we doing now? Ss: We are having an English class now. T: Good. You are having an English class now. But you were having a math class at this time yesterday. (The teacher will give some help if the students can’t.) ( The communication between the teacher and students will give students a simple impression of the Past Continuous Tense. ) 2. Set up some exercises. Find the time adverbial by finding the key words. T: Now, we will do some exercises. Find the key words and fill in the blanks. (1) The children __________ (do) their homework in the classroom at that time.
