(2016·四川高考)A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night's sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.

Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin (褪黑激素),which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.

The study,by researchers from Seoul,South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.

Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were

less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.

Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.

While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.

Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.

Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

9.According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk ________.

A.started sleep more easily

B.were more anxious

C.were less active

D.woke up later

Those given night milk...were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime...

10.Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text?

A.It's been tested on mice for ten times.

B.It can make people more energetic.

C.It exists in milk in great amount.

D.It's used in sleeping drugs.

可知,并不是所有的牛奶中都含有大量的褪黑激素,故排除C项;由第六段中的信息taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night可知,褪黑激素被用于安眠药中,故D项正确。

【答案】 D

11.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Night Milk and Sleep

B.Fat,Sugar and Health

C.An Experiment on Mice

D.Milk Drinking and Health

【答案】 A

12.How does the author support the theme of the text?

A.By giving examples.

B.By stating arguments.

C.By explaining statistical data.

D.By providing research results.

D

Our brains work in complex and strange ways. There are some people who can calculate the day of the week for any given date in 40,000 years, but who cannot add two plus two.Others can perform complex classical piano pieces after hearing them

once, but they cannot read or write.

https://www.360docs.net/doc/d77837892.html,ngdon Down first described this condition in 1887.He called these people idiot savants. An idiot savant is a person who has significant mental injury, such as in autism (自闭症) or retardation. At the same time, the person also exhibits some extraordinary skills, which are unusual for most people. The skills of the savant may vary from being exceptionally gifted in music or in mathematics, or having a photographic memory.

One of the first descriptions of a human who could calculate quickly was written in 1789 by Dr.Benjamin Rush, an American doctor. His patient, Thomas Fuller, was brought to Virginia as a slave in 1724.It took Thomas only 90 seconds to work out that a man who has lived 70 years, 17 days, and 12 hours has lived 2,210,500,800 seconds.Despite this ability, he died in 1790 without ever learning to read or write.

Another idiot savant slave became famous as a pianist in the 1860s.Blind Tom had a vocabulary of only 100 words, but he played 5,000 musical pieces beautifully.

In the excellent movie Rain Man, made in 1988 and available on video cassette, Dustin Hoffman plays an idiot savant who amazes his brother played by Tom Cruise, with his ability to perform complex calculations very rapidly.

Today we more clearly recognize that the idiot savant is special because of brain impairment.Yet not all brain injury leads to savant skills. Some studies have shown that people who have purposeful interruption of the left side of the brain can develop idiot savant skills. However few people wish to participate in such experiments. There are many excellent reasons for not undergoing unnecessary experimentation on one's brain. The term idiot savant is outdated and inappropriate.Virtually all savants have a high degree of intelligence and are thus not idiots.

13.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Idiot savants have areas of outstanding abilities.

B.Human beings have complicated thinking process.

C.The brains of the idiot savants are partly impaired.

D.The reasons why people have wonderful skills vary.

【答案】 A

14.Which of the following can be done by Rain Man?

A.He can play wonderful pieces of classical music.

B.He can guess out exactly the length of a man's life.

C.He can memorize the contents of the pictures fast.

D.He can count matches dropped on the floor quickly.

根据文章倒数第二段的“with his ability to perform complex calculations very rapidly”可知Rain Man具有快速进行复杂计算的能力。

15.What can you infer from the passage?

A.Idiot savants have real talents for art and math.

B.Dr.Down is the first person who found idiot savants.

C.Few people wish to risk becoming savants by brain operations.

D.Intentional left brain impairments will surely lead to idiot savants.

根据文章最后一段“However few people wish to participate in such experiments.”

Dear_Tom,

I'm_glad_to_have_attended_your_birthday_party_last_Sunday.It was a big party

indeed. But I have to say it was the most luxurious birthday party I'd ever attended.

For us teenagers there is no need to be that extravagant because we mainly get living expenses from our parents. And it is shameful to waste much of the food. What's more, the party with loud noise went on late into the night, which bothered the neighborhood.

To my mind, the meaning of the birthday party lies in sharing the pleasure of our growth with our friends. It's great fun to get together, for the feelings instead of for the expensive food and splendid decorations.

Yours,

Li_Hua

8 Unit 1 A land of diversity-Reading CALIFORNIA California is the third largest state in the USA but has the largest population. It also has the distinction of being the most multicultural state in the USA, having attracted people from all over the world. The customs and languages of the immigrants live on in their new home. This diversity of culture is not surprising when you know the history of California. NATIVE AMERCANS Exactly when the first people arrived in what we now know as California, no one really knows. However, it is likely that Native Americans were living in California at least fifteen thousand years ago. Scientists believe that these settlers crossed the Bering Strait in the Arctic to America by means of a land bridge which existed in prehistoric times. In the 16th century, after the arrival of the Europeans, t he native people suffered greatly. Thousands were killed or forced into slavery. In addition, many died from the diseases b rought by the Europeans. However, some survived these terrible times, and today there are more Native Americans living in California than in any other state. THE SPANISH In the 18th century California was ruled by Spain. Spanish soldiers first arrived in South America in the early 16th century, when they fought against the native people and took their land. Two centuries later, the Spanish had settled in most parts of South America and along the northwest coast of what we now call the United States. Of the first Spanish to go to California, the majority were religious men, whose ministry was to teach the Catholic religion to the natives. In 1821, the people of Mexico gained their independence from Spain. California then became part of Mexico. In 1846 the United States declared war on Mexico, and after the war won by the USA, Mexico had to give California to the USA. However, there is still a strong Spanish influence in the state. That is why today over 40 of Californians speak Spanish as a first or second language. RUSSIANS In the early 1800s, Russian hunters, who had originally gone to Alaska, began settling in California. Today there are about 25,000 Russian-Americans living in and around San Francisco. GOLD MINERS In 1848, not long after the American-Mexican war, gold was discovered in California. The dream of becoming rich quickly attracted people from all over the world. The nearest, and therefore the first to arrive, were South Americans and people from the United States. Then adventurers from Europe and Asia soon followed. In fact, few achieved their dream of becoming rich. Some died or returned home, but most remained in California to make a life for themselves despite great hardship. They settled in the new towns or on farms. By the time California elected to become the thirty-first federal state of the USA in 1850, it was already a multicultural society.
