Informal conversation is an important part of any business relationship. Before you start a discussion, however, make sure you understand which topics are suitable and which are considered taboos in a particular culture. Latin Americans enjoy sharing information about their local history, art, and customs. They expect questions about your family and be sure to show pictures of your children. You may feel free to ask similar questions of your Latin American friends. The French think of conversation as an art form, and they enjoy the value of lively discussions as well as disagreements. For them, arguments

can be interesting — and they can cover pretty much or any topic — as long as they occur in a respectful and intelligent manner.

In the United States, business people like to discuss a wide range of topics, including opinions about work, family, hobbies, and politics. In Japan, China, and Korea, however, people are much more private. They do not share much about their thoughts, feelings, or emotions because they feel that doing so might take away from the harmonious business relationship they're trying to build. Middle Easterners are also private about their personal lives and family matters. It is considered rude, for example, to ask a businessman from Saudi Arabia about his wife or children.

As a general rule, it's best not to talk about politics or religion with your business friends. This can get you into trouble, even in the United States, where people hold different views. In addition, discussing one's salary is ususlly considered unsuitable. Sports is typically a friendly subject in most parts of the world, although be careful not to criticise a national sport. Instead, be friendly and praise your host's team.

B

Small talk is a very short conversation used by individual to kill time and make the other person feel comfortable in his presence. However, sometimes you should be careful of your topics.

There are certain “safe” topics that people usually discuss.

The weather is probably the number one thing that people who do not know each other well discuss. Sometimes even friends and family members discuss the weather when they meet or start a conversation.

Another topic that is generally safe is current events. As long as you are not discussing a controversial issue, such as a recent law concerning equal rights, it is usually safe to discuss that. Entertainment and sports news is another good topic. If there is something that you and the other person have in common, that may also be acceptable to talk about. For example, if the bus is extremely full and there are no seats available, you might talk about the reasons why. Similarly, people in an office might casually discuss the new paint or furniture.

There are also some subjects that are not considered acceptable when making small talk. Discussing personal information such as salaries or a recent divorce is unacceptable between people who do not know each other well. Compliments on clothing or hair are acceptable; however, you should never say something (good or bad) about a person's body. Negative comments about another person not involved in the conversation are also not acceptable. When you do not know a person well you cannot be sure who their friends are. You do not talk about private issues either, because you do not know if you can trust the other person with your secrets or personal information. Lastly, it is not wise to continue talking about an issue that the other person does not seem comfortable with or interested in.

Are you sick of feeling your tongue turn to a lump of (一块) coal whenever you meet a small talk situation? Follow these smart tips, and you'll become a great conversationalist making lasting impressions wherever you go.

Debra Fine, author of The Fine Art of Small Talk, says that connecting with people through conversation doesn't always come instinctively(出于本能地). That means you need much training to improve your speaking abilities. First, have around three things to talk

about before you head for an interview. Second, think of four questions you can ask that will make the other person chat. Finally, if you've met the person before, mention something of the previous conversation or introduction to show your interest.

The awkward moment when the other person didn't recognize you may make you feel hurt. Before you put too much pressure on a new relationship, be the first to say “hello”. You can release (释放) some pressure by saying, for example,“Stephanie Pratt? Hi, good to see you again.” Another w ay to put strangers at ease is to smile and shake their hands when you greet them.

Small talk is always challenging at conferences or large events, especially when you don't know anyone. There's a reason why millions of people read the New York Times every day: to stay knowledgeable about the world they live in. If you find reading a daily newspaper too tedious, find special topics that interest you. Learn the general news from News, CNN, or Google News. Build a conversation by asking, “Have you heard about ...?”

Last, listening is an important part of small talk, especially when you're entering a conversation that's already in progress. If you want to leave a lasting impression, one of the best ways is to be a great listener. As you listen to others' experiences and opinions, you'll enlarge your knowledge about other cultures and nations, and finally become a more fascinating conversationalist.

8.According to Debra Fine, .

A.many people don't like small talk

B.people with a good memory are good at talking

C.showing interest is the key to a good conversation

D.conversation is a skill that needs training

根据第二段中的“Debra Fine ... says that connecting with people through conversation doesn't always come instinctively (出于本能地). That means you need much training to improve your speaking abilities.”

9.The purpose of small talk is to .

A.reduce the pressure during a conversation

B.build a connection and make a good impression

C.make a conversation more interesting

D.enlarge the knowledge about other cultures

根据第一段中的“making lasting impressions wherever you go”以及第二段中的“says

that connecting with people through conversation”可知,闲聊的目的是联系他人并给对方留下好印象。

10.The underlined word “tedious” in Para. 4 means “ ”.

A.short B.limited

C.boring D.formal

11.What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Purpose of small talk

B.Topics of small talk

C.Smart tips on small talk

D.Art of listening in small talk

文章第一段中的“Follow these smart tips, and you'll become a great conversationalist making lasting impressions wherever you go.”

How Good Are Your Social Skills?

Have you ever crossed the road to avoid talking to someone you recognise? Would you love to go to a party and talk confidently to every guest? Do you want to make more friends but lack the confidence to talk to people you don't know? And are you nervous about the idea of being at a social event in another country? Don't worry — we can help you!

You needn't worry about situations like these if you have good social skills. And they are easy to learn. People with good social skills communicate well and know how to have a conversation. It helps if you do a little advance planning.

Here are a few ideas to help you.

?Learn how to do small talk

Small talk is very important and prepares you for more serious conversations. Be prepared! Have some lowrisk conversation openers ready. For example:

·think of a recent news story — not too serious, e.g. a story about a film star or sports star

·think of things to tell people about your studies

·think of “safe” things you can ask p eople's opinions about — music, sport, films, etc.

·think of topics that you would avoid if you were talking to strangers — and avoid talking about them! That way, you don't damage your confidence!

?Develop your listening skills

Listening is a skill which

— it involves speaking AND listening. Always remember — you won't impress people if you talk too much. Here are some ideas to make you a better listener:

Do ...

·show that you are listening by using encouraging noises and gestures —smiling, nodding, saying “”and “OK”, etc.

·keep good eye contact

·use positive body language

·ask for more information to show your interest

Don't ...

·look at your watch

·yawn

·sigh

·look away from the person who's talking to you

·change the subject

·finish other people's sentences for them

Always remember the words of Benjamin Disraeli, British Prime Minister in the 19th century:“Talk to a man about himself, and he will speak to you for hours!”

?Learn the rules

If you go to a social occasion in another country, remember that social rules can be different. In some countries, for example, you have to arrive on time at a party; in other countries, you don't need to. In addition, you need to know how long you should stay, and when you have to leave. Some hosts expect flowers or a small gift, but in other places, you can take things, but you needn't if you don't want to. Remember also that in some countries, you mustn't take flowers of a certain colour, because they're unlucky. In most places, you don't have to take a gift to a party — but find out first!,你的社交技能有多高?

6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.

6 Unit 1 A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones. Starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages(5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artistof this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created a feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance(15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values gradually replaced those held in the Middle Ages. People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life.At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess their own paintings, so they coule decorate their superb palaces and great houses. If the rules of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new
