A“We haven’t found anything that we can’t recycle!”Cigarette ends are everywhere—littering our streets and beaches—and for decades they’ve been thought of as “unrecyclable”. But a New Jersey based company, called TerraCycle, has taken on the challenge, and has come up with a way to recycle millions of cigarette ends and turn them into industrial plastic products. Its aim is to recycle things that people normally consider impossible to reuse.Obviously it would be even better for the environment ifeveryone just stopped smoking, but the statistics show that althoughthere has been an increase in anti-smoking ads and messaging, between 2000 and 2014, global sales of cigarettes increased by 8 percent, and a whole lot of those cigarette ends are ending up as trash. Since most of our litter eventually ends up in waterways, cigarette ends can surely pollute the surrounding environment. “It only takes a single cigarette end to pollute a liter o f water,” TerraCycle founder, Tom Szaky, said. “Animals can also mistake littered cigarette ends for food.”So how do you go about turning all those poisonous ends into something useful? TerraCycle does this by first breaking them down into separate parts. They mix the remaining materials, such as the tobacco and the paper, with other kinds of rubbish, and use it on non-agricultural land, such as golf courses. The filters (过滤嘴) are a little harder. To recycle these, TerraCycle first makes them clean and cuts them into small pieces, and then combines them with other recycled materials, making them into liquid for industrial plastic products. They’re now also expanding their recycling offerings to the rest of the 80 percent of household waste that currently c an’t be recycled, such as chocolate packaging, pens, and mobile phones. The goal is to use the latest research to find a way to stop so much waste ending up in landfill (垃圾填埋), and then get companies to provide money for the process. And so far, it’s worki ng.“We haven’t found anything that we can’t recycle,”communications director of TerraCycle, Albe Zakes, said. “But with the amount and variety of packaging and litter in the world, we are always looking for new waste streams to address.”21.What does TerraCycle intend to do?A. Search for recyclable materials for use.B. Deal with as many cigarette ends as possible.C. Produce new kinds of industrial plastic products.D. Recycle what used to be considered unrecyclable.22.The underlined word “trash” in P aragraph 2 probably means ______.A. rubbishB. poisonC. disasterD. ruin23.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?A. The effective use of cigarette ends.B. The process of recycling cigarette ends.C. The difficulty in recycling cigarette ends.D. Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade. Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season. Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming, while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling. This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate. Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming. Ozone (臭氧)levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice, darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in. The following spring, however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer trees covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.“We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gase s in the atmosphere.” Scientists tracked the change in amount of radiation entering and leaving the climatesystem as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature. Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years. Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results. Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicated, 0.5 watts per square meter of area burned are soaked up by the earth from greenhouse gases, but 0.9 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling. Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.32.According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may _______.A. result in a warming climateB. cause the forest fires to occur more frequentlyC. lead to a longer fire seasonD. protect the forests and the environment there33.Earlier studies about northern forest fires ________.A. analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climateB. indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphereC. suggest that people should take measures to protect environmentD. suggest that the fires will speed up climate warming34.The underlined phrase “soaked up” in the last paragraph most probably means ________.A. releasedB. absorbedC. createdD. disturbed35.From the text we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may ______.A. warm the climate as the assumption goesB. allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climateC. destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea iceD. help to gain more energy rather than release more energy第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Flash forward to today’s world of Facebook, Instagram and WeChat, where photos, videos and mobile phones rule. Fortunately, several new tools are making it easier for college applicants to use technology to show off their personalities, skills and creativity.ZEEMEEOne of the more popular innovations in college applications is ZeeMee, a free mobile app that allows students to upload personal profiles and videos to create visual resumes. More than 220 colleges and universities offer a ZeeMee option as part of the application process. The video can show the unique creative aspects ofthe applicants.THE COALITION LOCKERAnother relatively new tool comes from the Coalition for Access, Affordability and Success, now used by more than 110 member colleges and universities. Among the group’s stated goals are getting students engaged in college prep early and using technology to create a supportive application process that encourages reflection and self-discovery.Students who sign up for the free platform get access to a digital “locker”, which they can use all through high school to save class papers, artwork, newspaper stories, videos and photos to share with colleges when they eventually apply.VIDEO — CHAT INTERVIEWSAt some schools, an interview with an admission officer is an important part of the application process. To make it easier, several virtual interviewing tools have popped up, such as a video-based platform from Kira. More than 140 universities worldwide use Kira’s video assessment tool to conduc t real-time interviews with prospective students. During the interview, candidates are shown the questions prerecorded by the particular school and must respond in real time by talking into the camera on their laptop or phone. In addition to showing their ability, to speak fluently in English and think on their feet, it helps admission officers determine the “motivation, commitment and drive” of applicants.UNIQUE SCHOOL TOOLSSome universities have come up with their own ways to allow students to show their skills and personalities. For example, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, encourages applicants to display their technical abilities and creativity by submitting a “Maker Portfolio” —a written or videotaped description of a project that shows creative and problem-solving skills. While a new app would fit the bill, the project could be anything from an origami design to a potato cannon.25.Which of the apps give students more guidance from their high school?A. ZEEMEE.B. But it is the teacher as a group leader who creates an effective organizational structure and good working environment so that instruction and evaluation activities can take place. A group that is totally disorganized, unclear about its goal . or constantly fighting among its members will not be a good learning group. The pattern includes helping to form and maintain a positive learning environment so that instruction and evaluation activities can take place. On the first day of class, the teacher faces a room filled with individuals (个体 ). Perhaps a few closely united groups and friendships already exist. But there is no sense of group unity, no set of rules for conduct in the group , no feeling of belonging. If teachers are successful leaders, they will help students develop a system of relationships that encourages working together.Standards and rules must be set to keep order, make sure of justice and protect individual rights, but do not contradict(相悖) school policy. What happens when one student hurts another's individual rights? Without clear regulations agreeable to the students and teachers, the classroom can become chaotic,(混乱的). Students may break rules they did not know existed. If standards are set without participation from the class, students may spend a great deal of creative energy in destroyingthe class environment or finding ways to break rules. No matter how skillful the teacher is in uniting students and creating a positiveatmosphere, the task is never complete. Regular maintenance(维持) is necessary.Conflicts arise. The needs of individual members change. A new kind of learning taskrequires a new or organizational structure. Sometimes outside pressures such asholidays, upcoming tests or sport competitions, or family troubles cause stress inthe classroom. One task for the teacher is to recreate a positive environment byhelping students deal with conflict , change, and stress.28.The underlined word “maintain" in Paragraph l probably meansA. keepB. buildC. recreateD. evaluate29.According to the author, the teacher should .A. free students from outside pressuresB. set the standards and rules on his ownC. be responsible for a well-organized classD. focus more on instruction and evaluation30.From the passage we can lean that .A. rules cannot be changed once they're formedB. outside pressures may not cause tension among studentsC. if the teacher well units his students, he then will finish his taskD. if rules are not acceptable both to students and teachers, the classroom can bea mess31.What is the author's main purpose of writing the passage?A. To provide information for teaching.B. To show the importance of' teaching a class.C. To study the teacher's behavior in the classroom.D. To compare the teacher's behavior with the students' in class.DThe famous director of a big and expensive movie planned to film a beautifulsunset over the ocean, so that the audiences could see his hero and heroine in frontof it at the end of the film as they said goodbye to each other forever.
