Chapter One Introduction

As an introduction to this study,this chapter will provide a brief description of the background,significance and structure of the study so as to display the necessity of the report.

1.1Background

China has become the world’s second largest economy since the opening-up and reform.China has strengthened political,economic,cultural exchanges with other countries.With the development of continuous communication between the Chinese and foreign cultures,more and more foreign films,especially English films,are coming into China and are welcomed and loved by Chinese audiences.Being an active part of entertainment industry,film plays an important role in the cross-cultural communication.In recent years China and the United States has reached a partial agreement on the film industry and cultural development.China will increase143D or IMAX movies on the basis of the introduction of the United States film quota of about20per year.U.S.box office accounts from the original13%to25%(Geng Qingyuan:2014).As a method of linking language and culture,translation plays a significant part in connecting the minds of people all over the world and promoting the communication in politics,economy,culture,education,science and technology. With the introduction of a large number of English films,Film subtitle translation becomes more and more important,but some domestic scholars don't pay enough attention to the subtitle translation of foreign movies and these translators don’t have translation training system,so that the quality of their translation works is uneven, which isn’t conducive to the healthy development of subtitle translation.

1.2Significance

In recent years,Chinese has enhanced cultural exchanges with other countries. More and more English films are coming into China.English films are good,but few Chinese people can understand them completely because of language barriers.So we are used to solve the problem mainly by dubbing and subtitle translation,but they has their own advantages and disadvantages.Both dubbing and subtitle translation can let Chinese audience understand the meaning of the films.Subtitle translation can retain the original sound and style of the films,while many Chinese audiences cannot understand English.Although dubbing cannot preserve the original sound and style of the films completely,it can meet the requirements of the Chinese audiences.So the
