我的妻子Jean当过斯坦福大学的招生主任，她向我保证，如果当年我申请斯坦福大学，她会拒绝我。
我把这篇演讲的草稿给她过目，她强烈反对我使用"拒绝"这个词，她从来不拒绝任何申请者。
在拒绝信中，她总是写："我们无法提供你入学时机。
"我分不清两者到底有何差异。
在我看来，那些大热门学校的招生主任与其称为"准许你入学的主任"，还不如称为"拒绝你入学的主任"。
很显然，我需要好好学学怎么来推销自己。

这样的忠告很少被重视，几乎注定被忘记，永远不会被实践。

For seven years now, it has been my assignment and my privilege to deliver an annual report to our alumni, and to serve as the warm-up act for our distinguished speaker. Whether this is your first opportunity to be a part of these exercises or your fiftieth, it is worthtaking a minute to soak in this place—its sheltering trees, its familiar buildings, its enduringvoices. In 1936, this part of Harvard’s yard was named Tercentenary Theatre, in recognition ofHarvard’s three hundredth birthday. It is a place where giants have stood, and history has beenmade. We were reminded this morning of Gee Washington’s adventures here. And from this stagein 1943, Winston Churchill addressed an overflow crowd that included 6,000 uniformedHarvard students heading off to war. He said he hoped the young recruits would e toregard the British soldiers and sailors they would soon fight alongside as their “brothers inarms,” and he assured the audience that “we shall never tire, nor weaken, but march withyou … to establish the reign of justice and of law.” Four years later, from this same place, Gee Marshall introduced a plan that aidedreconstruction across war-stricken Europe, and ended his speech by asking: “What is needed?What can best be done? What must be done?” Here, in 1998, Nelson Mandela addressed an audience of 25,000 and spoke of our sharedfuture. “The greatest single challenge facing our globalized world,” he said, “is to bat anderadicate itsdisparities.” Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first female head of state in Africa, stoodhere 13 years later and encouraged graduates to resist cynicism and to be fearless. Here, on the terrible afternoon of September 11, 20xx, we gathered under a cloudless sky toshare our sadness, our horror, and our disbelief. And here, just three years ago, we marked Harvard’s 375th anniversary dancing in the mud of atorrential downpour. Here, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had celebrated Harvard’s threecenturies of acplishment in a parably soaking rain. Here, J.K. Rowling encouraged graduates to “think themselves into other people’s places.” AndConan O’Brien told them that “every failure was freeing.” Here, honorary degrees have been presented to Carl Jung and Jean Piaget, Ellsworth Kelly andGeia O’Keefe, Helen Keller and Martha Graham, Ravi Shankar and Leonard Bernstein, JoanDidion and Philip Roth, Eric Kandel and Elizabeth Blackburn, Bill Gates and Tim Berners-Lee. I remember feeling awed by that history when I spoke here at my installation as Harvard’s28th president, and when I reflected on what has always seemed to me the essence of auniversity: that among society’s institutions, it is uniquely accountable to the past and to thefuture. Our accountability to the past is all around us: Behind me stands Memorial Church, amonument to Harvardians who gave their lives at the Somme and Ypres and Verdun duringWorld War One. Dedicated on Armistice Day in 1932, it represents Harvard’s long tradition ofmitment to service. In front of me is Widener Library, a gift from a bereaved mother, named in honor of her sonHarry, who perished aboard the Titanic. A library built to advance the learning and discoveryenabled by one of the mostdiverse and broad collections in the world. 那么，如何才能实现我们的梦想呢？以下是我想要分享的几点建议：1. 明确目标首先，我们需要明确自己的目标。
目标是我们前进的动力，是我们奋斗的方向。
只有明确了目标，我们才能在人生的道路上坚定前行。
2. 勇于尝试实现梦想需要勇气。
我们需要勇于尝试，勇于走出舒适区。
只有这样，我们才能不断突破自己，实现更大的成就。
3. 持之以恒梦想的实现不是一蹴而就的，它需要我们持之以恒的努力。
在这个过程中，我们会遇到各种困难和挫折，但只要我们坚持下去，就一定能够成功。
4. 保持谦逊在追求梦想的过程中，我们可能会取得一些成就。
但我们要始终保持谦逊，不要骄傲自满。
只有保持谦逊，我们才能不断进步，实现更高的目标。
5. 关爱他人在实现自己梦想的同时，我们也要关爱他人。
因为，一个人的价值不仅仅在于他个人的成就，更在于他对社会的贡献。
亲爱的同学们，哈佛的四年时光转瞬即逝。

Ladies and gentlemen,
Today is a very special day, not only for the graduates
but also for their parents, friends, and families who have supported them in their long journey towards this momentous occasion. You have all gathered here in this prestigious institution, Harvard University, to celebrate the accomplishments of these young men and women.
As we look back at their journey, we can resonate with
the challenges they have faced and the sacrifices they have made to reach this point. They have pushed themselves beyond their limits and have worked very hard to pursue their dreams. Today, they have achieved their goals and are ready to embark on a new journey, a journey that will define their future.
As I stand here, I cannot help but reflect on my own journey. Like many of you, I did not have an easy path, but I was determined to change my life trajectory. I understood
that my destiny was not dictated by my circumstances, but rather by my choices, my attitude, and my perseverance. And this understanding has been instrumental in my journey.
Today, I want to share my journey with you, and I hope
that it will inspire you to make the necessary changes in
your life to transform your destiny.
Growing up, I was raised in a very humble family. My parents worked tirelessly to provide for us, but we still struggled financially. I knew from a young age that I did not want to live my life like this. I dreamed of going to college, obtaining a degree, and making a better life for myself and
my family.
However, my circumstances told a different story. I was
not an outstanding student, and I had no resources to pursue higher education. I had no connections or access to
influential people who could help me achieve my dreams.
But I was determined to change my story. I took charge of my education by reading extensively, attending seminars and workshops, and seeking advice from experts in various fields.
I was relentless in my pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement, and over time, I began to develop the skills and the network that I needed to achieve my goals.
It was not an easy journey. There were countless times when I wanted to give up, times when I doubted myself, and times when I was told that I was not good enough. But I held on to my dream and my vision, and I refused to let anyone or anything deter me from my path.
And today, I stand before you as a testament to the fact that anything is possible. I have achieved more than I ever thought possible, and I have changed my family's trajectory and my own.
My story is not unique, and my journey is one that many of us can relate to. You may have faced similar obstacles and challenges, and you may have doubted your ability to achieve your dreams. But I want to tell you today that you have the power to change your life trajectory.
You have the ability to make choices that will lead you towards success, happiness, and fulfillment. You have the strength to persevere and work hard towards your goals, no matter what obstacles you may face. And you have the
potential to transform your circumstances and create a better future for yourself and your loved ones.
As you leave this institution and embark on a new journey, I urge you to remember the power that lies within you. Use
your education, your skills, and your passion to make a difference in the world. Believe in yourself and your
abilities, and do not be afraid to take risks and pursue your dreams.
You have the potential to change the world, and I cannot wait to see the amazing things that you will accomplish in
the years to come.
