Brazil has become one of the developing world’s great successes at reducing population growth —but more by accident than design. While countries such as India have made joint efforts to reduce birth rates, Brazil has had better result without really trying, says George Martine at Harvard.Brazil’s population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1.93% a year between 1981 and 1990, and Brazilian women now have only 2.7 children on average. Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990, an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.Martine puts it down to among other things, soap operas and installment (分期付款) plans introduced in the 1970s. Both played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate. Brazil is one of the world’s biggest producers of soap operas. Globo, Brazil’s most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.“Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction (生育), they describe middle and upper class values: not many children, different attitudes towards sex, women working,” says Martine. “They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people conscious of other patterns of behavior and other values, which were put intoa very attractive package.”Meanwhile, the installment plans tried to encourage the poor to become consumers (消费者). “This led to an enormous change in consumption patterns and consumption was incompatible (不相容的) with unlimited reproduction,” says Martine.56. 61. ______________While everybody enjoys fresh cut flowers around his house, few people know how to keep them for as long as possible. This may be done by keeping in mind a few simple facts. The key to keeping fresh cut flower for a week or more without preserv atives ( which contain biocides (杀虫剂) that kill bacterial and fungus) is to keep the water fresh an d the stems free of air pockets so they can continue to draw u p water.62. ______________An important thing to remember about cut flowers is that the y are sensitive to temperature. For example, studies have sho wn that cut carnations retain their freshness eight times longe r when kept at 12℃ than when kept at 26℃. Keeping freshly harvested flowered at the right temperatures is probably the most important aspect of flower care.63. ______________The process by which flowers consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide, called respiration (呼吸), supplies the energy the flower needs to give the flower its shape and color. The making of seeds also depends on this energy. While all living things respire, flowers have a high lev el of respiration. A result of all this respiration is heat, and for f lowers the level of heat relative to the mass of the flower is ve ry high. Respiration also brings about the eventual death of the flower. Thus the greater the level of respiration, the sooner t he flower dies.64. ______________How, then, to control the speed at which flowers die? By con trolling respiration. How is respiration controlled? By controllin g temperature, we know that respiration produces heat, but th e reverse ( 反面 ) is also true. Thus by keeping low temperatures, respiratio n is reduced and the cut flower will age more slowly.65. ______________Another vital factor in keeping cut flowers is the quality of the water in which they are placed. Flowers find it difficult to “drin k” water that is dirty or otherwise polluted. Even when water lo oks and smells clean, it almost certainly contains harmful sub stances that can endanger the flowers. To rid the water of the se unwanted substances, chlorine bleach ( 含氯漂白剂 ) can be used in small quantities. It is recommended that 1 5 drops of chlorine bleach be added to each liter of water. The water and solution (溶液)should also be replaced each day.【参考答案】61-65 BDCAE阅读理解。

Mark Twain has been called the inventor of the American novel. And he surely deserves additional praise:the man who popularized the clever literary attack on racism.I say clever because anti-slavery fiction had been the important part of the literature in the years before the Civil War.H.B.Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin is only the most famous example. These early stories dealt directly with slavery. With minor exceptions,Twain planted his attacks on slavery and prejudice into tales that were on the surface about something else entirely. He drew his readers into the argument by drawing them into the story.Again and again,in the postwar years,Twain seemed forced to deal with the challenge of race.Consider the most controversial,at least today,of Twain's novels,Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.Only a few books have been kicked off the shelves as often as Huckleberry Finn,Twain's most widely read tale.Once upon a time, people hated the book because it struck them as rude.Twain himsel f wrote that those who banned the book considered the novel “trash and suitable only for the slums(贫民窟).”More recently the book has been attacked because of the character Jim,the escaped slave, and many occurences of the word nigger.(The term Nigger Jim,for which the novel is often severely criticized, never appears in it.)But the attacks were and are silly—and miss the point. The novel is stronglyanti-slavery.Jim's search through the slave states for the family from whom he has been forcibly parted is heroic. As J.Chadwick has pointed out,the character of Jim was a first in American fiction—a recognition that the slave had two personalities,“the voice of survival within a white slave culture and the voice of the individual:Jim,the father and the man.”There is much more.Twain's mystery novel Pudd'nhead Wilson stood as a challenge to the racial beliefs of even many of the liberals of his day.Written at a time when the accepted wisdom held Negroes to be inferior(低等的)to whites, especially in intelligence,Twain's tale centered in part around two babies switched at birth.A slave gave birth to her master's baby and,for fear that the child should be sold South, switched him for the master's baby by his wife. The slave's lightskinned child was taken to be white and grew up with both the attitudes and the education of the slave-holding class. The master's wife's baby was taken for black and grew up with the attitudes and intonations of the slave. The point was difficult to miss:nurture(养育),not nature, was the key to social status. The features of the black man that provided the stuff of prejudice—manner of speech, for example—were,to Twain, indicative of nothing other than the conditioning that slavery forced on its victims.Twain's racial tone was not perfect. One is left uneasy, for example,by the lengthy passage in his autobiography(自传)about how much he loved what were called“nigger shows”in hisyouth—mostly with white men performing in black-face—and his delight in getting his mother to laugh at them.Yet there is no reason to think Twain saw the shows as representing reality. His frequent attacks on slavery and prejudice suggest his keen awareness that they did not.Was Twain a racist?Asking the question in the 21st century is as wise as asking the same of Lincoln. If we read the w ords and attitudes of the past through the“wisdom”of the considered moral judgments of the present,we will find nothing but error.Lincoln, who believed the black man the inferior of the white, fought and won a war to free him.And Twain, raised in a slave state, briefly a soldier, and inventor of Jim,may have done more to anger the nation over racial injustice and awaken its collective conscience than any other novelist in the past century.【语篇解读】通过研究马克·吐温的作品,来判定他是否是一名种族主义者。

An international business specialist group has announced that the move towards a green economy is becoming more urgent for emerging economies(新兴经济体),especially South Africa. On Monday,Innovation Group announced that green economic policies were becoming increasingly important on the global landscape and for emerging economies.According to Pule Mokoena, from Innovation Group, experts believe the adoption of these green policies will assist with“ailing(不景气的)economies”.“Th e move to a green economy, such as the adoption of alternative energy solutions, should be adopted by economies and countries.”Mokoena's comments came as Greenpeace Africa called on the South African government to review its decision to include nuclear energy into the country's energy plan.In order to avoid all energy crisis in the country,the_energy_mix_had_to_be_diversified,including broadening energy carriers to include gas, nuclear, biomass, renewable(wind, solar and hydro),as well as the efficient use of the existing resources, such as coal. For this reason, nuclear energy will account for 23 percent of South Africa's energy needs, followed by coal at 15 percent, hydro at six percent, gas six percent, turbines six percent and renewable energy 42 percent. However,Pule said there are other options for South Africa's energy needs.“Too many companies are focusing on the costs of green policies, rather than focusing on the long-term benefits,”explained Mokoena.Nobel economics winner Joseph Stiglitz and the former World Bank chief economist agree with Mokoena and believe that the need to switch to green technology should be seen as an opportunity and not as a burden. When in South Africa earlier this year,Stiglitz said a switch to green technology would stimulate demand for a range of goods and services, which would have a beneficial impact on the aftermath of the global recession. He urged policymakers not to be held back by short-term perspectives.Innovation Group has already developed a reliable alternate energy solution, which the company believes will change the landscape of this emerging market and other companies will follow suite and offer renewable energy solutions for emerging economies.“We are quickly becoming an industry leader in this space thanks to our in-house expert knowledge on the various SWH technologies available and the application of our Business Process Outsourcing Solutions, which allow for the mass roll-out of these technologies on a national scale. We are proud to be an active part of the solution to the current energy crisis andplan to become a major force in the drive towards sustainability and good environmentalpractice,”Pule said.【语篇解读】像南非这样的新兴经济体经历了经济的快速发展之后会面临能源危机,而走绿色发展道路是唯一的出路。

Children dream big dreams, but there are three barriers to realizing dreams. They often kill them before they ever have a chance to grow. The Self Immediately following the birth of a big dream, a negative self-talk takes over and gives all the reasons why it cannot happen. This inside voice is the ego(自我). It’s there for protecting and should be listened to. 72 Most people are influenced by the inside voice. That’s why only a handful of people make their dream come true. 73 Family and friends are a lot like the ego. They want to protect those they love, so they will often list all the reasons why the big dreams won’t come true. Sometimes, family and friends destroy dreams of those they love most, out of their own fear of being left behind. The World If one gets past the first two barriers, one has to face the world. 74 In the past, big dreamers were locked up and sometimes even killed when they were shown to the world. Fortunately, in most of the world today, big dreamers just get laughed at. The way to realize a big dream is with confidence and action. When children have confidence and then take action, they will be ready to accept any failure. The truth is that every great dreamer whose dreams have never seen the light of success knows failure well. 75 A. Family and Friends B. How Big Dreams Die C. Then, consider this:you might be in a state of sub-health(亚健康). Sub-health,also called the third state or gray state,is explained as borderline state between health and disease. According to the investigation by the National Organization, over 45 percent of sub-health people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management positions as well as students around exam-week. Symptoms(征兆)include a lack of energy, depression, slow reactions, insomnia(失眠),agitation, and poor memory.Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist and legs. The key to preventing and recovering from sub-health,according to some medical experts,is to form good living habits, alternate work and rest, exercise regularly, and take part in open air activities. As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should also eat more fresh vegetables, fruits, fish because they are rich in nutritional elements—vitamins and trace elements(微量元素)—that are important to the body. Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestive tract(消化道).They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in avoiding sub-health.
