Contrast a Person Would Like about Living in My City One of my friends is planning to move to my city for school. Her name is Xiao Jiao, and she comes from China. She wants me to help her to adapt the new environment in the United States. There are so many differences between the United States and China, including the way we dress, the way we make friends, and the way we deal with universities. In order to give her a good start living in the United States, I am going to contrast what she would like about living in my city and living in China.

The first contrast she would like is the way that Americans treat strangers. When I first arrived at the Chicago airport, Ididn’t have any cash with me. I walked in a store to buy a five-dollar hotdog without realizing “Cash Only” tag on the door. When the casher was waiting for me to pay money, I felt so embarrassed. A girl who was standing behind me offered to pay my bill. She said: “I will pay that for you.”I was completely shocked and didn’t respond to her. In China, we will never help anyone unless a person asks for help. However, she walked in front of me, and paid the bill. All I did was saying “Thank you.”T hat was my first impression of Americans. When my friend comes here, she will get help from a stranger in the United States. She is also going to feel moved by these small things like I did.

The second contrast she would like is the strict laws in the United States. As long as you come here with a legal status, you will be protected by American laws. When I first came here

with a green card, I wanted to find a job. I was hired in a Chinese restaurant as a waitress. They told me that there wasno payment for training, no insurance, and no legal contract. I said: “Ok! That makes sense for a waitress.” In China, peopledon’t get these benefits when they are working as a waitress. To me, it was normal. When I told my husband and my mother-in-law, they were shocked. They asked me to quit the job immediately, and they said it was against the law. That restaurant could get into big trouble if they did that. Since then, I have realized that people in the United States are actually protected by the laws unlike Chinese laws, which are barely enforced. If she comes to the United States with a legal status, her legal rights will be protected. That is the most important thing she needs to guarantee when she goes to another country.

Over all, she will experience all the differences between two countries. Because I came from the same country as her, I could give her a good start in the United States. The United States a melting pot of cultures. The strict laws in the United States will protect her from being tricked. I think that the longer she stays in the United States, the more she will like it. As a friend of hers, I will try my best to explain American culture. It will help her to avoid culture shock. I have been living in the United States for two years, and I have become a person who is happy to help others just as the girl who helped me at the Chicago airport.
