英译汉翻译练习1:

1. If we wish to be free —if we mean to preserve inviolate those inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending;if we mean not basely to abandon the noble struggle in which we have been so long engaged, and which we have pledged ourselves never to abandon, until the glorious object of our contest shall be obtained — we must fight!

2. The world is undergoing profound changes: the integration of economy with science and technology is increasing, the restructuring of the world economy is speeding up, and economic prosperity depends not only on the total volume of resources and capital, but also directly on the accumulation and application of technological knowledge and information.

3. And, only by maintaining rapid economic growth on the basis of better performance, can we mitigate the operating problems plaguing our enterprises, lighten unemployment pressure, promote strategic restructuring of the economy, increase state revenue, prevent financial risks and maintain social stability.

4.This will remain true whether we are dealing with the application of psychology to advertising and political propaganda, or engineering to the mass media of communication, or of medical science to the problem of overpopulation or old age.

5. Furthermore, it is harder to ignore them when they cannot be banished psychologically to another part of town or excused as the whims of alien groups —when they have to be ack nowledged as “ part of us.”

6.At this point in American history, the answer to the first question is beyond challenge. Yes, as far as the U.S. is concerned, natural law exists. The "Laws of Nature" are right there in the first sentence of the Declaration of Independence.

7.The second and most famous sentence provides a perfect definition of natural law: human beings are "endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights," including "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

8.Where do these rights come from? Some may have trouble with the concept of a divine creator. Others may find it overly metaphysical to insist that every human being has these rights in a world where most people are patently unfree to exercise them.

9.But few can doubt that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are what a civilized society ought to strive to provide its members. As the Declaration says, that is the reason "Governments are instituted" It is "self-evident." That's good enough for me.

10.On my last holiday in the Bahamas, as I walked along the beach feeling the gentle

waves wash over my feet, I felt part of universe, even if only a minuscule one, like a grain of sand on the beach.
