Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answers to both these questions are yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. When people have close blood relationship , they are likely to be close in intelligence. Thus , if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as in–telligent as each other. Relatives like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar

英语(二)试卷第3页(共7 页)

Intelligence, and his clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different developing. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We should soon find differences in intelligence developing. And this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also supported by the fact that people who live in close contract with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.

26.According to the passage, a child _____.

A.born with low intelligence will become a genius through special education

B.born with low intelligence will never become a genius

C.living in rich and varied surroundings will develop his intelligence beyond the limits fixed at birth

D.living in a boring situation will not develop his intelligence at all

28.To show that intelligence is related to blood relationship , we may _____.

A.respectively examine the intelligence of two identical twins as well as that of two unrelated people taken at random, and then compare the results

Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

The America university is a direct descendant from the ancient university in Europe. These are the oldest institutions, aside from the church itself, in western civilization. They have survived many periods of trouble, of revolution , and of persecution(迫害). But the tradition of learning and of scholarly inquiry has lived on.

英语(二)试卷第4页(共7 页)

Yet there are shortsighted people today who are saying that the modern university has outlived

its usefulness, and that it must be overthrown and replaced by something else whose nature is unspecified.

Remember, however , that there have been many occasions during the last 700 years when people said that universities were irrelevant of that it was wrong for them to pursue long–term goals in the face of immediate and pressing problems. Fortunately, there have been stout–headed souls who argued that the search for knowledge would never be outdated by events and we can all be eternally thankfully that forces of ignorance were so often defeated. They must now be defeated again.

Knowledge and the search for knowledge have persisted through the centuries to the enormous benefit of human beings. The world may be troubled and distressed today but it should be thought how much better off the people in this country are now than they were 50 years ago or 100years ago and how much better off they are than the millions of people in countries which have not benefited from the progress of knowledge. We in the western world have encouraged scientific discovery and its application for 200 years to our vast material benefit. Today we are at a turning point. We can now use our stores of wealth and of knowledge as tools to solve the new problems which now beset(包围)our modern society.

Philadephia’s fire loss because so low that the first fire –insurance company in the United States was soon set up there. Ben Franklin was one of its directors. He also persuaded the city to pave and light its streets. Again , the fact that people had trouble keeping their houses warm in winter set Franklin’s active mind to work. He decided that the big fireplaces were to blame. Because they were set deep into the wall , they did not let enough heat reach the middle of the room.
