Passage One

It was midnight in Paris and we were rolling toward the Avenue Bosguet. As we came to the Pont Alexandre III, the cab slowed down, for the traffic light was red against, and then, without stopping, we sailed through the red light in a sudden burst of speed. The same performance was repeated at the Alma Bridge. As I paid the driver, I asked him why he had driven through two red lights.

―You ought to be ashamed of yourself, a veteran like you, breaking the law and endangering

SFLEP College English (New Edition) Achievement Test (Band 1) 3

your life that way,‖ I pr otested.

He looked at me astonished. ―Ashamed of myself? I am a law-abiding citizen and have no desire to get killed either.‖ He cut me off before I could protest.

―No, just listen to me before you complain. What did I do? Went through a red light. Well, did you ever stop to consider what a red light is, what it means?‖

―Certainly,‖ I replied. ―It‘s a stop signal and means that traffic is rolling in the opposite direction.‖

―Half-right,‖ said the driver, ―but incomplete. It is only an automatic stop signal. And it does not mean that there is cross traffic. Did you see any cross traffic during our trip? Of course not. I slowed own at the light, looked carefully to the right and to the left. Not another car on the streets at this hour. Well, then! What would you have me do? Should I stop like a dumb animal because an automatic, brainless machine turns red every forty seconds? No, monsieur,‖ he thundered, hitting the door with a huge first. ―I am a man, not a machine. I have eyes and a brain and judgment, given me by God. It would be a sin against nature to surrender them to the dictates of a machine. Ashamed of myself, you say? I would only be ashamed of myself if I let those blinking lamps do my thinking for me. Good night, monsieur.‖

Is this bad, is this good? Frankly I no longer am sure. I never doubted that it was wrong to drive through a re light, but now I find my old Anglo-Saxon standards somewhat shaken.

Passage Two

Until modern times, no one knew what comets were. They were feared as signs warning some sad events. The very word ―comet‖ comes from the Greek ―kometes‖, which means ―the long-haired one.‖ The Greeks and Romans believed that comets were evil spirits with flowing beards. In the Middle Ages, the Church declared that comets were sent by God to punish man. An

外教社?《大学英语》(全新版)1级学业测试 4 astronomer of the Middle Ages said the comet of 1531 ―was the color of blood. An ugly spirit with long hair rode at its head. It looked so terrible and produced such fear in the common people that some were frightened to death and others fell sick.‖

These views prevailed until late into the seventeenth century, when the English astronomer Edmund Halley noticed similarity in the paths of the comets of 1456, 1531, 1607 and 1683. Halley became certain that these comets were one and the same comet turning round and round the sun like a planet. He predicted that this comet would return about the end of 1758 or early in 1759, since it had been seen regularly every seventy-five or six years.

Halley himself did not live long enough to see his comet return. But his prediction proved to be correct, for on march 12, 1759 a comet was seen blazing across the sky. This was the first time in history that a comet had been definitely expected. Since 1759, it will return in 1985 or 1986. The comet is named Halley‘s Comet, after the man who accurately predicted its appearance.

A. something of red color

B. something sent by God to punish man

30. According to the passage, the comets of 1456, 1531, 1607 and 1682 were _________.

Passage Three

―I ask you to drink to his health as a young man full of the spirit of adventure who has lit up the world with a flash of c ourage.‖ With these words the British Minister of Air turned and raised his glass to the young man who sat beside him — a young man who, only a month before, was completely unknown. Yet on that summer d ay in 1927 his name was on the world‘s lips — Charles Lindbergh, the first man to fly the Atlantic alone.

He had been an air mail pilot, flying back and forth between Chicago and the city of St. Louis. Determined to win the $25,000 prize offered by a fellow-American for the first flight from New York to Paris, Lindbergh had persuaded a group of St. Louis businessmen to finance the building of a special plane for him.

The news that Lindbergh intended to fly the Atlantic alone was received with disbelief. ―The plane would never fly,‖ people said. It would run out of fuel. It had only a single engine. Lloyd‘s of London refused to insure the flight. Men called Lindbergh the ―flying fool‖.

But on May 20th, 1927, just after ten to eight in the morning, Lindbergh‘s ―Spirit of St. Louis‖,

SFLEP College English (New Edition) Achievement Test (Band 1) 5

heavily laden with fuel, struggled into the air from a New York airfield. For several hours the weight to the petrol prevented the young pilot from flying more than a few feet above the wave-tops. Night came, and thick fog covered up the stars. Lindbergh flew steadily on, hoping that his course was the right one. He struggled to keep a wake, checking the fuel all the time to keep his mind active. Throughout the next d ay the ―Spirit of St. Louis‖ flew on over the seemingly limitless sea. Then a fishing boat appeared, and an hour later, land. It was Ireland. Lindbergh set a compass course for Paris.

By ten o‘clock the lights of France‘s capital were shining beneath him. Tired, unshaven, suddenly hungry, the ―flying fool‖ came own to Le Bourget Airport, and landed in front of a huge crowd of wildly cheering people. After 34 hours of continuous piloting, the flight of 3,600 miles was over.

Passage Four

Last Thursday an old chap came to our school to talk about the evils of smoking. He said he wouldn‘t go on for too long, and we saw him take his wrist-watch off and lay it on the table. I can‘t remember what he said about smoking because Slater and I had other things to think about. He finished when the bell rang for play-time, and the headmaster told us to go out. Slater happened to slip …

In the playground Slater showed me the watch. He put it on his wrist, and it looked lovely. I was wishing that I‘d been the one to slip by th e table, because it was a beautiful watch, gold by the look of it. The headmaster came outside then, and the old boy was with him. They walked about, looking around and talking all the time. After a bit the bell rang, and we got into our lines, ready to go in.

The headmaster said, ―I‘ve got a little job for you boys. This gentleman, our lecturer, has just lost his watch in the playground. It‘s happened before, he says — it just slips off his wrist. So look around for it, will? See if you‘re clever enough to find it. I‘ve no doubt the boy who does so will get a useful reward.‖

外教社?《大学英语》(全新版)1级学业测试 6 Well, of course, Slater wasn‘t going to miss a chance like that. He‘s just about the luckiest devil in the school —rewards just drop into his hands. We all walked about the playground, looking for the watch. And I wasn‘t a bit surprised when Slater bent down as if he was picking something up. Then he hurried past me towards the old man.

―Where are you going?‖ I called out, though I knew very well where he was going. ―Where do you think?‖ he called back.

And the next minute there was Slater, all smiles, handing over the watch to the old fellow and hanging about for the reward.

But the lecturer didn‘t seem at all pleased. In fact he looked quite ready to put a knife in Slater‘s heart —until the headmaster burst out laughing. Then they both laughed. Slater told afterwards that the old man hadn‘t even said ―Thank you‖ for the watch.

The thing that puzzled us most of all was that Slater didn‘t get any reward. When he reminded the headmaster a bout it, the headmaster said: ―Ah yes, we mustn‘t forget that. I said ?a useful reward‘, didn‘t I?‖ And then he gave Slater a big sheet of paper and told him to write a composition on the evils of smoking. Slater says he hasn‘t got a clue what to write.

36. What were the two boys thinking about during the lecture?

A. They were not thinking about anything.

B. They were thinking about the evils of smoking.

C. About the watch — and how to get it, perhaps.

D. They thought that the headmaster was very clever.

37. Why did the story-teller wish that he had slipped?

A. Because it was a beautiful watch.

B. Because he thought he could have taken the watch if he had slipped.

C. Because the watch wouldn‘t have been lost if that had happened.

D. Because in that case he wouldn‘t have given it back to the lecturer.

38. ―The headmaster came outside then, and the old boy was with him.‖ Who was the old boy?

A. An old student.

B. The lecturer.

C. The headmaster‘s son.

D. A servant.

39. When Sla ter ―bent down‖, what was he trying to do?

A. He had to bend down in order to pick up the watch.

D. Because the headmaster did not keep his word.

The weather seems to be everybody‘s favorite topic of conversation in Great Britain. This is not because people are particularly interested in it, but because people have to talk about something when they meet and weather serves as a convenient subject.

The main reason why people talk about the weather is that it is unpredictable. To some people it is interesting while to others it is irritating. Y ou can never tell with certainty what the weather is going to be like tomorrow. Every morning when you wake up, you expect a glorious sunshine, especially when you have planned to go traveling, but you find it is pouring. There are weather forecasts on the radio and TV and in newspapers, but on the whole not everyone believes them.

Section A

Directions:I n this section, you will hear 10 short conversations. At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. Both the conversation and the question

will be spoken only once. After each question there will be a pause. During the pause,

you must read the four choices marked A), B), C) and D), and decide which is the best

answer. Then mark the corresponding letter with a single line through the center.

Example: You will hear: M: Is it possible for you to work late, Miss Grey?

W: Work late? I s uppose so, if you really think it‘s necessary.

Q: Where do you think this conversation most probably took place?

You will read: A) At the office.

B) In the waiting room.

C) At the airport.

D) In a restaurant.

From the conversation we know that the two were talking about some work they had to finish in the evening. This is most likely to have taken place at the office. Therefore, A) ―At the office‖ is the best answer. You should choose [A] and mark it with a single line

1. W: ―Oh, no. It‘s six o‘clock already and I still haven‘t finished these exercises.‖

M: ―Don‘t worry. The clock is half an hour fast. You still have plenty of time to do them.‖

Q: When does this conversation take place?

2. M: I hope that the post office will be open now.

W: The sign says: nine a.m. to five p.m. weekdays, nine a.m. to twelve noon Saturdays.

Q: When will the post office open on a weekend?

3. W: Good morning. This is Clara Anderson at the local library. I‘d like to speak to Peter, please.

M: Hell o, Mrs. Anderson, I‘m sorry but my son isn‘t at home. I can give you his office telephone number if you‘d like to call him at work now.

Q: Where is Peter now?

4. M: Sue, how long will your uncle be staying with you?

W: Just about a week or so.

Q: How many days will her uncle stay with them?

5. W: The hours are 9 to 11:30, Monday through Friday.

M: Do I have any paid vacation?

Q: What are they talking about?

6. M: I can‘t wait to see the look on Frank‘s face when he looks at his grade.

W: Neither can I.

Q: What do we learn from the conversation?

7. W: I can‘t decide which to wear for the party, fur coat or leather jacket.

M: It isn‘t easy to choose, is it?

Q: What does the man mean?

8. M: Just think six and a quarter million passengers are carried by London Transport everyday!

W: And over half of them in the ―rush hours‖ — 7:30 – 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Q: When are the ―rush hours‖?

外教社?《大学英语》(全新版)1级学业测试12 9. W: Why have we stopped?

M: Well, Mrs. Brown, you are not using your mirror enough. You must check in the mirror before you pull out. But after all, this is only your second lesson. You are doing fine.

Q: What is the man‘s job?

10. W: Since the turn of the century, more than 320,000 British people and 2 million Americans

have been killed in road accidents.

M: Oh, really. That means the number of American killed on the road is five times that of American soldiers killed in all wars during the same period.

Q: How many American soldiers have been killed in wars since 1900?

Section B

Directions: I n this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once.

After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices

marked A), B), C) and D). Then mark the corresponding letter with a single line

through the center.

Passage One

The most important use of drifting bottles is to find ocean currents. When the position and direction of currents are known, ships can use the forward movement of a current or stay away from currents that would carry them off their course. Benjamin Franklin was one of the first to use bottles in the study of currents. He wondered why British mail ships needed a week or two longer than U.S. ships needed in order to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Franklin thought the Gulf Stream might explain this difference.

Franklin talked with U.S. captains. He found that they knew each turn of the Gulf Stream. They used the current in every possible way. From his talks with the U.S. sea captains, Franklin made his first map of the Gulf Stream. Then he checked his map by using sealed bottles. The map that he finally made is still used, with only a few changes, today.

Questions from 11 to 14 are based on the passage you have just heard.

11. Why are drifting bottles used?

12. What led Franklin to talk with U.S. sea captains?

13. What did Franklin make after his talks with U.S. sea captains?

14. What did Franklin do in order to make an accurate map?

Passage Two

Mary: Maybe it was the fish or meat we ate.

David: Yes, it might‘ve been.

Mary: Or the soup.

David: No, it couldn‘t have been the soup because I didn‘t have any.

Mary: Of course we sat in the sun for a long time. I suppose it could‘ve b een the sun.

David: Yes, it might‘ve been. But we‘ve got used to sitting in the sun.

Mary: That‘s true. Now what else did we both eat? Only those lovely peaches I bought! It couldn‘t have been them. We‘re used to eating peaches, and you washed them.

David: No, I didn‘t. I thought you had!

SFLEP College English (New Edition) Achievement Test (Band 1) 13

Mary: I didn‘t. I was sure you did. It must‘ve been the peaches then!

Questions from 15 to 18 are based on the dialogue you have just heard.

15. What were the two speakers talking about?

16. Which food did David NOT eat?

17. Who washed the peaches?

18. What caused the problem?

Passage Three

Modern ideas are beginning to influence the Eskimos, but not enough to make much difference to their way of life. They still spend the winter in igloos, the round huts that are built of snow frozen hard. They still travel on sleds that are pulled by dogs. The winter is too cold for hunting, so during that season they live on the stores of seal meat that they have killed in the summer. But seal meat is not the only kind of food that they eat. In summer they hunt bears and reindeer, a type of large deer with long branching horns that is used for it‘s milk, meat and skin. They also fish all the year round. The Eskimos who are hunters in summer are fishermen in winter. In winter they make holes in the ice and catch the fish through the holes that they have made. The Eskimos are adaptable. That is why they are able to live in Arctic regions.

Questions from 19 to 20 are based on the passage you have just heard.

19. What does the author say about the Eskimos?

20. What is the Eskimos‘ major means of transportation?

大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三)

大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三) (总分:25.00,做题时间:90分钟) 一、单项选择题(总题数:5,分数:25.00) Task 6 The sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us. Sound has a wasted product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better. Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. There is a saying about it being so noisy that you can't hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don't, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems. Noise adds more tension (紧张) to a society that already faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots (四轮马车) from moving through the streets at night! Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the "good old days" of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise--if we shout loudly enough about it.
