阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

Zhu Haoyu,18,a history major, wears his iPod everywhere on campus. The freshman has it going out for a walk, visiting the library or lying in bed. However,he found that his habit is like displaying a big “Do not disturb” sign for himself.

As time slips away,he has begun to regret not having conversed much with his peers around.“As I put the little buds(耳机) into my ears,I'm immersed in a universe of my own, forgetting all troubles in the real world,”said Li.

The MP3 player is one of a number of gadgets (小玩意)—starting with the Sony Walkman, which led to the iPod,iPhone and iPad-that give people the ability to shut themselves off from world around them.

Youngsters delight in handset (手持的) technology. In public, students chat on their cell phones, stopping only to talk briefly to friends. On buses or trains it's common to see youngsters with PlayStations instead of playing poker or sharing jokes or games. And during airline flights, people watch episodes(连续剧) of US TV dramas on their iPads, rather than talking.

The BBC News Magazine recently published an article saying that headphone wearing culture is making us anti-social.“Half of humankind is wired to a parallel universe that leaves them ignoring their surroundings and fellows,” wrote Tom de Castella. Actually,it's a decade since Apple unveiled the iPod,which promised “1,000 songs in your pocket”.In 2007 more than half of Western residents were using an iPod or MP3 player.

Entertainment is on offer in all surroundings, not just at home. But in the meantime,it has created barriers between us.Many people subscribe to the view that the headphone culture is creating a “spoilt, selfish generation that lacks civic (公民的) culture”.

However, many users of portable MP3 players argue that the device,as a mind drug, helps them relieve stress by escaping for a while. It is also said to be able to help some students concentrate on work or study.“If you want to get away from the hucksters(小贩) on the way, just start listening to your player,” said Liu,a freshman.“They do not approach people with headphones on.”This might also mean he's blocking those who want to ask him for the directions.

Experts, however, say that short contacts or mini conversations with strangers are helpful to our mind. Many experts warn that it is dangerous to lose touch with people in our lives.

56.Zhu Haoyu found that his wearing the iPod________.

A.disturbed others B.made it easy for him to keep in touch with others C.made it easy for him to visit the library D.made others unwilling to talk to him

57.The underlined word “immersed” can be replaced by________.

A.lost B.involved

C.engaged D.interested

58.What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph?

A.Students are always busy chatting on their cell phones in public.

B.Young people are fond of portable listening or visual devices.

C.Young people like to watch US TV dramas on their iPads.

D.People like to enjoy the networking.

59.Which of the following is not true?

A.Headphone wearing culture makes people ignore their surroundings and fellows. B.Apple released the iPod ten years ago.

C.There are still many people support the headphone culture.

D.It's dangerous to have conversations with strangers.

60.What is the writer's attitude towards the headphone culture?

A.Approval. B.Criticism.

C.Doubt. D.Appreciation.

After two decades of start-and-stop drilling,Russian researchers have finally reached Lake Vostok. The lake is buried beneath ice that is two miles thick. The lake's fresh water has remained untouched for the last 20 million years. One of roughly 400 lakes that rest under the ice on the continent,Lake Vostok is the largest. At 160 miles long and 30 miles wide,it is similar in size to Lake Ontario in North America.

Scientists around the world are eager to see what the Russians find at Lake Vostok once they study water samples.Researchers want to find out what-if any-life exists in that cold and dark place. It's possible that bacteria too tiny to see, might live there, and scientists know this tiny life existed on Earth before plants and animals did. Some of the bacteria may be similar to bacteria that currently lives near the dark and deep ocean floor. One big difference:Lake Vostok's life dates back millions of years.

“The more we learn about life, the more we learn about its ability to grow and survive and do well in environments that we formerly thought were too inhospitable,” said David Morrison,a senior scientist at NASA Astrobiology Institute.

The drilling of Lake Vostok has made it possible for scientists to test technologies that could be used to study similar places in our solar system.Conditions in lakes in Antarctica are the closest we can get to those where scientists expect to find extraterrestrial (地球外的) life.

Lake Vostok will provide more information about the history of Antarctica, which many believe was part of a larger continent in Earth's distant history.

Other people think what we learn about the lake will improve our knowledge of Earth's climate and help us t o predict changes to it.Mahlon Kennicutt Ⅱ,a Texas A&M University professor of oceanography believes this is very important.“A view of the past gives us a window on our planet's future,” he said.

61.What does the author tell us in Paragraph 1?

A.How long the Russian researchers kept on drilling.

B.Where the Russian researchers have finally arrived.

C.What benefits Lake Vostok will bring to Russian people.

D.What the general state of Lake Vostok is.

62.Which of the following are the researchers interested in?

A.The existence of life in Lake Vostok. B.The temperature of Lake Vostok. C.The bacteria living near the ocean floor. D.The climate conditions of Lake Vostok.

63.What does the underlined word “inhospitable” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A.Uncomfortable to work. B.Unfavorable to live.

C.Unsuitable to explore. D.Unachievable to study.

64.One of the benefits from drilling Lake Vostok is to________.

A.get a large amount of fresh water B.test technologies used to study similar places

C.find extraterrestrial life D.improve the living conditions near the lake 65.The author mentioned the words said by Mahlon Kennicutt Ⅱ in order to________. A.voice a different opinion about our planet's future

B.find fault with drilling Lake Vostok

C.call the attention of the media

D.stress the value of exploring Lake Vostok

C

Many traffic jams leave drivers puzzled as they finally reach the end of a tailback to find no visible cause for their delay. Now,a team of mathematicians have found the answer by developing a model to show how major delays occur on our roads, with no obvious cause.

The model showed that a driver, slowing down below a critical speed (临界速率) when reacting to unexpected events, forces the car behind to slow down further and the next car back to reduce its speed still further. The result of this is that several miles back, cars would finally come to a stop, with drivers unaware of the reason for their delay. The model predicts that this is a very typical situation on a busy highway (above 15 vehicles per km).The jam moves backwards through the traffic creating a so-called“backward travelling wave”,which drivers may encounter many miles upstream, several minutes after it was caused.

Drivers and policy-makers have not previously known why jams like this occur, though many have put it down to the sheer volume of traffic. While this clearly plays a part in this new theory, the main issue is around the smoothness of traffic flow.According to the model, heavy traffic will not automatically lead to jams but can be smooth-flowing.T his model takes into account the time delay in drivers' reactions,

which leads to drivers' braking more heavily than would have been necessary if they had identified and reacted to a problem ahead a second earlier.

When a driver taps the brake, the traffic may come to a full standstill several miles behind. It really matters how hard a driver brakes-a slight braking from a driver who has identified a problem early will allow the traffic flow to remain smooth.Heavier braking, usually caused by a driver reacting late to a problem, can affect traffic flow for many miles.

66.From the passage,we learn that________.

A.the new theory lacks evidence and is not convincing

B.driving at low speed leads to traffic jams

C.many drivers don't know how to deal with unexpected events

D.drivers are often unaware of the reason why a traffic jam happens

67.Which of the following is NOT included in the new theory?

A.The traffic speed. B.The width of roads.

C.The volume of traffic. D.The reaction time.

68.Traffic jams can be avoided when________.

A.mathematicians develop a model B.drivers react to problems early

C.there is a “backward travelling wave” D.there is a visible cause of the delay 69.The underlined word “this” in the third paragraph refers to________. A.the“backward travelling wave” B.the smoothness of traffic flow

C.the volume of traffic D.the model developed by a team of mathematicians 70.What would be the best title for the passage?

A.A new model developed by mathematicians B.The mystery of traffic jams solved by mathematicians

C.Traffic jams caused by slow reacting drivers D.Impacts of heavy braking

D

It's a popular dish eaten by millions of people. It's a symbol of wealth and power and is often served at weddings and banquets. It's shark fin(鱼翅) soup,a traditional Chinese dish that is served in restaurants worldwide. To satisfy the growing demand

for the soup, fishermen kill as many as 70 million sharks each year-just for their fins.

That's a big reason shark populations are falling fast. The numbers of the largest sharks-including the famous great white shark-have dropped by 90 percent since the 1950s.Scientists say that about one third of all shark species are at risk of becoming extinct.

American government signed the Shark Conservation Act in January. This law bans any U.S.boat from catching or transporting sharks without their fins attached.A bill introduced in California in February would take shark conservation a step further. It would ban the sale and possession of shark fins. That would include serving shark fin soup.Hawaii passed a similar ban last year.

Scientists say the practice of finning is a major cause of the collapse in shark populations. In finning, fishermen slice off the fins of live sharks and throw the bodies back into the water.Without their fins, the sharks sink to the ocean floor and die.Sharks are more vulnerable (脆弱的) to overfishing than other types of fish. They grow slowly and have fewer offspring than other fish do.Sharks are often captured and killed faster than they can repopulate the waters.

Finning is also big business.Fishermen sell the fleshy fins to fish markets and producers of shark fin soup, mainly in China.A pound of fins might sell for as much as $ 200.

Why should we care about protecting these fearsome meat eaters? As the top ocean predators(食肉动物),sharks keep the populations of other fish from growing too large. If sharks were to be wiped out, their usual prey would reproduce unchecked. That could throw the ocean food chain off balance.“Removing the top-level predator s in the ocean has significant effects on its ecosystem,” said biologist John McCosker. 71.Some American states made the law on the issue of sharks________.

A.to keep the tradition of serving shark fin soup B.to show the preciousness of shark fins

C.to maintain the power of sharks D.to help protect these sharks

72.What's the possible result of overfishing sharks?

A.Disturbing the balance of food chain of mankind. B.Damaging the oceanic ecological balance.

C.Causing fishermen to be out of work. D.Decreasing the number of other fish. 73.Which of the following couldn't be the cause of the collapse in shark populations?

A.The practice of finning. B.Slow growth.

C.Shark attacks. D.Fewer offspring.

74.Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Sharks live on other fish in the ocean.

B.Shark fin soup is the symbol of Chinese food culture.

C.Nowadays sharks are endangered.

D.Sharks play an important role in the ocean food chain.

75.It can be inferred that________.

A.humans are to blame for shark populations' falling fast

B.shark fin soup is necessary for human growth

C.ocean environment is getting better and better

D.Chinese food culture is famous around the world

第一节阅读表达(共5小题,每小题3分,满分15分)

阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的词数要求)。

[1]It costs a lot to go to college or university. The increasing costs make us doubt whether there's real value to a college education. Is the thousands of dollars of debt and the time lost for study worthwhile? The answer may lie in the value of a college education and rates of return on investment (投资)to both the individual and society.

[2]On the financial side, there's enough data to suggest that on average a college graduate will earn a great deal more than________.In America, over a lifetime a college graduate will earn on average about $ 2.1 million compared to $1.2 million for a high school https://www.360docs.net/doc/f1668209.html,pared with the cost of attending a four-year university, about $10,000 per year, and even adding the cost of lost working time,it's clearly of financial value to attend university.

[3] In addition to the possibility of increased earning power, college graduates also enjoy other benefits. The Institute for Higher Education Policy ever published a report stating that people who finished a college or university program experienced a number of assistant benefits. They included higher levels of saving, improved quality of life, more hobbies and free time activities.

[4] And for well-educated people, they tend to be more open-minded and more cultured. What's more,a college education can even improve your health. Many research studies have shown a positive connection between higher education and good health, not only for yourself, but also for your children.

[5]So it appears that there's really much value in a college education. Why not go to college and have a high college education? Go now!
