A

Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.

A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but sitting for long periods of time will hurt you forever.

Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it’s best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on t he floor, but it’s not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones(骨盆) to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine(脊椎), this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck.

You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get painful or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins(静脉)and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can

cause permanent nerve damage.

So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.

21. Which of the following is not the consequence of crossing legs?

A. Neck and back get hurt.

B. Feet and legs become numb.

C. Blood pressure goes up.

D. Pelvic bones keep perfect postures.

22. What does the underlined word “rotate” in Para3 mean?

A. break seriously

B. hurt greatly

C. move casually

D. straighten suddenly

23. What does the text mainly talk about?

A. How to choose a proper sitting posture

B. It is advisable not to sit with legs crossed

C. How to develop beneficial habits

D. Blood pressure harms our bodies.

B

Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with ALS(渐冻症)to communicate with others from a phone.

The GazeSpeak app combines a smartp hone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences.

For people suffering from ALS also known as motor neurone(神经元)disease, eye movement can be the only way to communicate. “Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor disabilities are expensive, not constant under sunlight, and require frequent readjustment and considerable, relatively fixed systems,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.

“To reduce the drawbacks…we created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system running on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, constant, portable and easy to learn.”

The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make for communication.

The label shows four grids(方格)of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids they want the letters belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm(计算程序)is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.

Zhang’s research, Smartphone-Based Gaze Gesture Communication for People with Motor Disabilities, is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May.

24. How does the new smartphone app help people with ALS?

A. By connecting its camera with sufferers’ appearance.

B. By communicating with people directly with a camera.

C. By changing eye movements into detailed written information.

D. By looking into the eyes of the sufferers.

25. Why did the researchers develop GazeSpeak

A. GazeSpeak will have fewer disadvantages.

B. Current systems can’t function effectively.

C. GazeSpeak can be properly used in the medical field.

D. Current systems can increase the risk of motor disabilities.

26. What can we know according the text?

A. Sufferers’ eye movements are determined by Gaze Speak.

B. Current systems are solid but costly for sufferers.

C. GazeSpeak has helped people a lot.

D. GazeSpeak hasn’t been practically on the market.

C

Our neighbor said the storm lasted four minutes. The town houses are destroyed or damaged. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured.

On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication that severe weather was on its way. The first alert my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around 9 p.m., from some rolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel to our local Pensacola, Florida, station.

No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. We had three flights of steps to get to the relatively safe closet down on the first floor.

As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch whipped through the doorframe. It flew over our heads, missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have stuck through us.

Finally, Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I grasped Jimmy’s arm as the tornado sucked the door open and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees and scalp(头皮) were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.

All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn’t believe it was over.

27. How was the old couple aware of the tornado?

A. They learned it from their neighbors who passed their house.

B. They learned it from some common indications before a tornado.

C. They found the news report forecasting the tornado on TV.

D. They found the tornado on top of them when they were upstairs.

28.We can infer from paragraph4 that ____________

A. The old couple was very grateful to the branch.

B. The old couple missed the branch very much.

C. The old couple was hit by the branch on the head.

D. The old couple was fortunate to have a narrow escape.

29. Why did the old woman feel no pain in paragraph5?

A. Because she was worried about her husband.

B. Because she was brave enough to bear the pain.

C. Because she didn’t actually feel any pain.

D. Because she had a good husband to comfort her.

30. The passage is most probably taken from _______.

A. a brochure

B. a novel

C. newspaper

D. a magazine

Although some people don't like using automatic hand dryers in restrooms, it may actually be argued that motion-sensing hand dryers are a practical alternative to paper towels. I believe that our school would benefit from investing in automatic hand dryers in all the restrooms.

First of all, the automatic hand dryer is very sanitary(卫生的). Instead of pulling on a lever (手柄) touched by a large number of students, users can just stick their hands under the air dryer. No bacteria can get on them because there is nothing to touch. Kids wouldn't get sick from the paper towel dispensers (纸巾盒) .

In addition, if the school buys automatic hand dryers, we can save money. There is a terrible waste of paper towels in the restrooms. Students continuously pull on the lever for unneeded towels until the dispensers are empty. An automatic hand dryer costs about $500, with very little additional cost over time while paper towels can cost $25 a case, or about $500 a year. After just

one year, it would pay for itself.

Finally, our bathroom is a paper towel mess! There are always piles of paper towels on the floor. Sometimes the extras fall from the dispenser unused. Many times kids make their used towel into a ball and aim for a basket. But if they miss the target, the paper ball stays on the floor. Paper towels leave so much litter in the restrooms that the restrooms are a mess.

People use the hand dryers for just a few seconds, and they think that automatic hand dryers don't dry their hands as thoroughly as paper towels. However, studies have shown that when people dry their hands for at least 30 seconds, automatic dryers actually dry much better than paper towels. It is difficult to get every part of your hand dry using paper towels, but the air can if you take a few extra seconds.

As you see there are some good points, let's install automatic hand dryers as soon as possible!

Text 10

M: Hello. Welcome to the program. In America, May and June are the traditional months for graduations. A listener in China, Wang Ming, who is about to get an engineering degree, wants to know how American college graduates find jobs. Right now, the answer is: not very easily. A latest study on the college job market showed that employers wanted to hire 22% fewer graduates this year than last. The study also showed that just 20% of those who looked for jobs before graduation have found one by now. This is compared to half of students who had looked for a job by this time two years ago. But one difference: fewer of this year’s graduates have started to search for jobs. Engineering graduates were more likely to have started their job search already, and to have accepted a job. This is among the best-paid professions for people with just a college degree. On average, engineering majors expect to start at about $62,000 a year.

根据材料中女士的回答“Hi, I’m calling to make some changes to an existing reservation.”

根据材料中女士的话“I’d like to change the check-in date from September 15 to September 16.”

根据材料中男士的话“The new rate is $199 per night, instead of the original $179.”

根据材料中女士的话“Then we’re going boating on Saturday.”

14. 答案为A。 根据材料中女士的话“We’re staying in a country inn.”

根据材料中男士的话“Sit on my sofa all weekend and watch the DVDs I’ve just bought.”

根据材料中女士的话“I don’t know how you can do that all weekend, Gordon. I’d get bored.”

17. 答案为A。 根据材料中“Wang Ming, who is about to get an engineering degree”可知Wang Ming 是一名马上就要毕业的学生。

根据材料中“…how American college graduates find jobs. Right now, the answer is: not very easily.”

19. 答案为A。 根据材料中“The study also showed that just 20% of those who looked for jobs before graduation have found one by now.”

根据材料中“Engineering graduates were more likely to have started their job search already, and to have accepted a job. This is among the best-paid professions for people with just a college degree. On average, engineering majors expect to start at about $62,000 a year.” 另外A中的work experience和C中的choice均未被提及。

A Many people have bought insurances, either life or property, commercial or compulsory. Yet some people know little about it and some even misunderstand its nature and function. Insurance is the sharing of risks. Nearly everyone is exposed to risk of some sort. The house owner, for example, knows that his property can be damaged by fire; the ship-owner knows that his ships may be lost at sea; the breadwinner knows that he may die at an early age and leave his family poorer. On the other hand, not every house is damaged by fire nor every ship is lost at sea. If these persons each put a small sum into a pool, there will be enough to meet the needs of the few who do suffer losses. In other words, the losses of the few are met from the contributions of the many. This is the basis of insurance. Those who pay the contribution are known as insured and those who administer the pool of contributions as insurers. The legal basis of all insurance is the policy. This is a printed form of contract on a piece of paper in best quality. It states that every year the insured shall pay a named sum of money, which is called the premium; in return, the insurer will pay a sum of money or compensation for loss if the risk or event insured against actually happens. The premium for an insurance naturally depends upon how likely the risk is to happen, as suggested by past experience. If companies fix their premiums too high, there will be more

A “It happened over three years ago,” Paddy said helplessly. No one answered him or moved, for no one knew what to do. “Just don't tell my mother,” said Fee numbly. “And no one did! Oh, God! My poor, poor Fran k!” Paddy wiped the tears from his face and said. “Fee dear, pack your things. We'll go to see him.” She half-rose before sinking back, her eyes in her small white face stared as if dead. “I can't go,” she said without a hint of pain, yet making everyone feel that the pain was there. “It would kill him to see me. I know him so well—his pride, his ambition. Let him bear the shame alone, it's what he wants. We've got to help him keep his secret. What good will it do him to see us?” Paddy was still weeping, not for Frank, but for the life which had gone from Fee's face, for the dying in her eyes. Frank had always brought bitterness and misfortune, always stood between Fee and himself. He was the cause of her withdrawal from his heart and the hearts of his children. Every time it looked as if there might be happiness for Fee, Frank took it away. But Paddy's love for her was as deep and impossible to wipe out as hers was for Frank. So he said. “Well, Fee, we won't go. But we must make sure he is taken care of. How about if I write to Father Jones and ask him to look out for Frank?” The eyes didn't liven, but a faint pink stole into her cheeks. “Yes, Paddy, do that. Only make sure he knows not to tell Frank we found out. Perhaps it would ease Frank to think for certain that we don't know.” 1. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. Frank was found guilty of murder because he was a professional boxer. B. The family didn't find out what happened to Frank until three years later. C. The jury and the judge disagreed on whether Frank had committed murder. D. Frank didn't want his family to find out what happened because Paddy disliked him.
