3、Reading Comprehension

(1)、 Trees should only be pruned when there is a good and clear reason for doing so a nd, fortunately, the number of such reasons is sm all. Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tr ee to grow in its own way.

First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The obj ect may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of sm

all side branches, which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pru

ning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or b ranches that are rubbing against each other and thus causing wounds. The health of a tree

may be encouraged by rem oving branches that are blocking up the center and so preventi ng the free movement of air.

One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy

entry for disease, but it is a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healin g and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce that risk of death as far as possible. It is essential to make the area, which has been pruned, smooth and clean, for h ealing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of the substances available from garden shops produced e specially for this purpose. Pruning is usually done in winter, for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without interference from the leaves and it is, too, very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them pr operly.

1. Pruning may be done to ______.

A. make the tree grow taller

B. improve the shape of the tree

C. get rid of the small branches

D. make the small branches thicker

2. Trees become unhealthy if a gardener _____.

A. allows too many branches to grow in the middle

B. does not protect them from the wind

C. forces them to grow too quickly

D. damages som e of the small side branches

3. A special substance is painted on the tree ______.

A. to make a wound smooth

B. to prevent disease entering a wound

C. to cover a rough surface

D. to help a wound to dry

4. A good gardener prunes a tree ______.

A. at intervals throughout the year

B. as quickly as possible

C. occasionally when necessary

D. regularly every winter

5. What was the writer's purpose when writing this passage?

A. To give practical instructions for pruning a tree.

B. To give a general description of pruning.

C. To explain how trees develop diseases.

D. To discuss different methods of pruning.

(2)、 One of the most authoritative voices speaking to us today is, of course, the voice of the advertisers. It shouts at us from the television screen and the radio loudspeakers; w aves to us from every page of the newspaper; signals to us from the roadside bill-boards a ll day and flashes messages to us in colored lights all night.

Advertising has been among England’s biggest growth industries since the war. Perhaps the reason is that advertising saves the manufacturers from having to think about the cust omer. At the stage of designing and developing a product, there is quite enough to think a bout without worrying over whether anybody will want to buy it. The designer is busy enou gh without adding customer-appeal to all his other problems of man hours and machine tol erances and stress factors. So they just go ahead and make the thing and leave it to the a dvertiser to find eleven ways of making it appeal to purchasers after they have finished it, by pretending that it confers status, or attracts love, or signifies manliness.

Other manufacturers find advertising saves them from changing their product. And ma

nufacturers hate change. The ideal product is one which goes on unchanged for ever. If, th erefore, for one reason or another, som e alteration seems called for -- how much better to change the image, the packet or the pitch made by the product, rather than go to all the in convenience of changing the product itself.

1. The author appears ______ modern advertising.

A. to like

B. to be indifferent to

C. to dislike

D. to know how to deal with

A. the production cost.

B. the quality

C. the market value

D. the image

5. The best title for the passage might be ______.

A. Advertising since the War

(4)、 In the United States there are two major political parties, the Democratic and the Republican. The Democratic Party is the older of the two, tracing its history back to the ti me of Andrew Jackson in 1820s. The Republican Party, which followed the Federalist Party and the Whigs, was organized in the 1850s primarily as an antislavery party. Since antislav ery sentiment was strongest in the manufacturing area of the North and East, the Republic an Party logically adopted the protective tariff and other ideas furthering the growth of ma nufacturing in the United States. In 1860 the Democratic Party was split into two factions, the northern and the southern Democrats, each putting up its own candidate for president. While the two factions together polled more votes than did the Republican ticket, the Repu blicans received a total higher than that of either faction of the Democrats, and Abraham Li ncoln was elected president.

From 1860 to the present day, there have been many attempts to find new parties. But whenever a third party has had considerable appeal at the polls, one of both of the major p arties in the next election has embraced the platform accounting for its appeal, and the thi rd party has faded away.

Over the years, therefore, the positions of the two major parties have been changing an d adapting themselves to the currently important problems of public policy. At one time the Democratic Party was considered to be a party standing up for state fights, and the Repub lican Party a party representing the interests of business and industry. A clear-cut differenc e between the two parties, however, has not existed for more than half a century. If one re ads the platforms of the two parties, one finds that there is very little difference between t hem. Each party seems to be appealing to practically every group of voters. Unlike the poli tical parties of Europe, and unlike the Conservatives and Laborites in England, the political parties in the United States are the collections of many disparate (不同的) elements.

1. At first, the platform of the Republican Party was centered around ______.

A. antislavery policies

B. developing manufacturing

C. settling the disputes between factions

D. solving social problems

2. According to the passage, Lincoln was elected because ______.

A. his antislavery policies

B. the Democratic Party was split up

C. Iris penetrating speeches

D. the Democratic Party was for him

3. The third parties cannot survive in America because ______.

A. they don't have appealing policies

B. the two major parties always adapt their policies to the public's interest

C. they are lack of funds

D. they are not allowed to take part in the election

4. Nowadays, the two major parties ______.

A. have quite similar platforms

B. don't' have any conflicts

C. appeal to different groups of people

D. have strayed away from the values they cherished in the past

5. The two major parties in Britain are ______.

A. similar with those in America

B. similar with those in Europe

C. the collection of many different elements

D. different from those in America

Is It Better to Buy or Rent? The price of housing has kept increasing in recent years, which causes a big headache for people living in cities. A lot of people cannot afford to own a real estate property, so they choose to rent instead of buying an apartment. This group of people does not want to bear burden of mortgage so that they opt for a practical solution. Renting an apartment makes them have a place to stay and thus they can focus on work as well as personal life. Some other people, however, believe that an apartment owned by themselves makes them feel safe and relieved, so they are willing to sacrifice some other aspects of life to borrow money from the bank to buy an apartment. As far as I am concerned, to buy or to rent is all about it will be better to rent first and wait for the good timing when the price is going down to buy. Topic 2: On Job Hopping It seems that nowadays, very few young people are willing to stay in a job position for long, let alone for the whole life. They change jobs constantly. This results from several factors. Firstly, young people like fresh things, and it is easy for them to be fed up with old routine work. So when they stay in a position for a while, the excitement will fade out. They are quite realistic and not willing to waste time in a job they are not interested in. Thirdly, some young people are not satisfied with current salary, believing they deserve better pay. In my opinion, constant job hopping will not benefit young people in their career development. Every job has its own merits and young people can certainly learn something from it as long as they are patient and wise enough. Every job experience is valuable down the career path and young people shall be able to make the most of it. Topic 3: Online Social Network Modern people will be no stranger to online social network. Facebook, Renren and Kaixin001 are probably the most populous networks among Chinese netizen. In these networks, people interact with each other, be it a stranger or a friend, and have a lot of fun in the virtual world. This phenomenon could be a result of the fast development of the Internet and people's great interest of the virtual world. I think it is a very good new platform for people to keep in touch. But it should not be overused. Firstly, some people are addicted to it, which makes them want to get online 24 hours a day. When people spend too much time on one thing, they will naturally have not enough time for study and for work. Secondly, online social network change people's behavior of interacting with others. In virtual world, you just click the mouse and type in words instead of having a face-to-face talk. This will not benefit people's long term friendship, and even harm their interpersonal relationships in real world.

UNIT1 I suspect not everyone who loves the country would be happy living the way we do.It takes a couple of special qualities. One is a tolerance for solitude .Because we are so busy and on such a tight budget, we don't entertain much.During the growing season there is no time for socializing anyway.Jim and Emily are involved in school activities, but they too spend most of their time at home.//此段要背 The other requirement is energy-a lot of it.The way to make self-sufficiency work on a small scale is to resist the temptation to buy a tractor and other expensive laborsaving devices.Instead, you do the work yourself .The only machinery we own (not counting the lawn mower) is a little three-horsepower rotary cultivator and a 16-inch chain saw.//此段要背 我想,不是所有热爱乡村的人都会乐意过我们这种生活的。 14. How much longer we'll have enough energy to stay on here is anybody's guess -- perhaps for quite a while, perhaps not. When the time comes, we'll leave with a feeling of sorrow but also with a sense of pride at what we've been able to accomplish. We should make a fair profit on the sale of the place, too. We've invested about $35,000 of our own money in it, and we could just about double that if we sold today. But this is not a good time to sell. Once economic conditions improve, however, demand for farms like ours should be strong again. 15. We didn't move here primarily to earn money though. We came because we wanted to improve the quality of our lives. When I watch Emily collecting eggs in the evening, fishing with Jim on the river or enjoying an old-fashioned picnic in the orchard with the entire family, I know we've found just what we were looking for. I has been replaced by dead-bolt locks, security chains, electronic alarm systems and trip
