I met my husband in my home country of El Salvador when he came as a UN V olunteer from Spain.When he finished,we decided to move to Spain together.Eventually,I made the decision to become a UN V olunteer because I wanted to share my experience and knowledge of medicine with people living in developing countries like my own.My first UNV assignment was in Angola in 2003.As a nutrition and health officer in Huambo province,I was able to share my experiences with local nurses,doctors and health workers,who,in my opinion,worked in some of the most unbelievable conditions.Yet,they carried out their daily tasks with a spirit and joy for life that one can only find in Africa.Upon completion of my work in Angola,I returned to Spain.My husband and I eventually moved to Mexico,and after some months I took up another assignment in Angola,but this time with Médecins du Monde,a French organization.Shortly after I wrapped up my second stint in Angola,UNV headquarters called asking if I would consider going to Timor Leste to serve as a doctor with the UN mission.So,off I went to Timor-Leste to go back to my first love,the clinical practice of medicine(Thankfully my husband is very understandable and a former UN V olunteer). I have been here for almost eight months now and I just love it.I have regular patients,I cover night duty,as I used to do it in my country,and I am the UN Medical Unit focal point for HIV in our regular meetings with the HIV advisor of UNMISET.I also participate in all surgical procedures with the Pakistan Army Surgical Team. Beyond working in my desired field,I am learning so much more about myself by working in this truly international and multicultural environment.For me,this means being tolerant and flexible.In addition,this is the first time I work in so many languages.I do consultations in Spanish,my mother tongue,Portuguese and English.In the beginning it was quite difficult and even funny because I mixed all three.Of course,as an outsider looking in,one could say that being a doctor in a multicultural environment must be extremely difficult.Why?Well,it is important to understand that your patients have different ideas and notions of illnesses and even symptoms.Therefore,I had to learn how to explain things in their own words so they can understand.This has proven to be a challenge at times,but it never really hinders my work.I am a doctor for the body and soul—yes,that includes the literal sense as well.I give all of my patients 100 per cent of me because I know that when someone comes to me looking for help,he or she deserves all my respect.After a very busy day,especially now as we’re in malaria and dengue season,when you want to rest but are still receiving calls from patients who are ill and need your help,you have to think,“Why did I decide to become a doctor?” For me the answer is simple.I love my profession and there is not enough money in the world that equals the feeling I get every time one of my patient’s smiles and says,“Thank you doctor”.Lending a helping hand in Timor Leste Dana Trump served as a UN Volunteer from October 2000 to May 2002 in East Timor.She is from Albuquerque,New Mexico and currently lives in Tijeras,New Mexico. My experience with UNV began in October 2000 when,after three days travel from the US,I flew from Darwin,Australia to my final destination of Dili—headquarters of the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor.Upon landing,I remembered the American UNV recruiting officer stressing the importance of flexibility.I felt I had prepared myself mentally for whatever would come my way.Now I realize I could never have been prepared for the intense experiences that laybefore me as part of a nation building effort in the new island nation of Timor Leste.Of course I had become very familiar with East Timor’s story before I arrived,but I remember the initial shock I felt on the drive from the airport to my temporary accommodation.The physical devastation of infrastructure was overpowering,but the havoc that had been wreaked was also reflected in the eyes of the many Timorese peering at me from the main boulevard.Immediately,I had a brief,yet naive,glimpse of the tremendous amount of work that lay ahead for this new country.I was posted at Dili District Administration where my official job position was as District Field officer.After one month in that position,the Dili District Education Officer(DEO) position became vacant,and I was reassigned.As DEO,and together with a Timorese counterpart,I was to oversee the operation and reconstruction of 90 schools and the management of some 1800 teachers.The schools were not operational in many areas.Some of the biggest tasks at hand included:the establishment of a national educational policy;re-evaluation of teacher competencies;personnel issues;distribution of materials and books;school furniture construction and distribution;reconstruction of damaged school facilities(the schools were a major target of the paramilitary groups);and water and hygiene projects,since roughly 50 percent of the school facilities were without running water. T he distribution of any material was a monumental task in itself,not only in arranging transportation and payment of workers,but there were logistical issues and vigilant management to ensure proper allocation.In addition,cultural differences caused challenges regarding distribution of funds and the occasional resulting strike of displeased Timorese workers.Dealing with these issues was a lesson in diplomacy and called for acquiring respect for differing cultural systems.Although the task was overwhelming at times,successes were to be had.Operational distribution systems were put into place,school furniture was built and distributed,and rehabilitation projects were carried out.It was rewarding to see Timorese children with their books outside the schools in the mornings.Yet,the requests for help from school headmasters and teachers continued.I remained in constant contact with NGOs and other able organizations,asking for assistance in an effort to address some of the tremendous needs.Crews from visiting US naval ships often helped paint and carry out basic carpenter work on school facilities and airlifted school furniture to unreachable locations.The peacekeeping forces present on Timor were also instrumental in rehabilitation projects.The people of Australia s Northern Territory kindly donated books and supplies,which were distributed to Dili schools.Care International eventually overtook the school water project,which was sorely needed to address hygiene and disease prevention among children.When my job ended with the official installation of my Timorese education counterpart,I was offered another position as District Field Officer for Atauro,a small,mountainous island located off the coast of Dili.My main objective for this short term contract was to help instil some measure of self-sustainability for the islanders after the planned UN transfer of power to the new Timorese government.As in the DEO position,I worked together with a Timorese counterpart.We worked hard on setting up business opportunities for the islanders,such as launching a scuba diving operation and establishing fish trade between the islanders and Dili restaurateurs. Also taking place at this time was a civic education campaign regarding the upcoming(first ever)presidential rmation regarding election procedures needed to be disseminated to the islanders.There are no roads on Atauro.Consequently,we reached out to the island villages bymaking a three-day around-the-island’s tour on a hired Timorese boat.At each stop,the village chiefs respectfully offered the best food available,such as rice,fish heads and coconuts. Health is a major issue on the island,as there were two nurses for a population of around 800,and primitive transportation systems make emergency care virtually nonexistent.As such,I coordinated traveling day clinics in which volunteer military doctors and nurses were flown by helicopter to isolated villages.Hundreds of people were treated at these clinics on each occasion.Clean drinking water and impending food shortages were serious issues for the islanders.Consequently,I organized an investigative field trip by helicopter to several Atauro villages with personnel from the World Food Programme.Professional endeavours aside,daily life in East Timor also had its challenges.There were always uncertainties regarding electrical power and running water.The presence of mosquitoes and serious diseases made sleeping under netting highly recommended,even if stifling ting was,however,not enough to stop me from contracting Dengue Fever.Clearly,I left East Timor touched in many ways.Along with a much deeper understanding and acceptance for the various people of the world,I felt empowered by my experiences,knowing that I had the ability to successfully navigate through physical and mental hardships in any setting.I was also changed in another very significant way.I had arrived in East Timor single,but left married and pregnant.We now live in New Mexico with our daughter,Isabela,who is a constant reminder of just how small and fabulous the world really is.。
