Suddenly another thought went through Kate's mind like an electric shock. An expresstrain was due to go past about thirty minutes later. If it were not stopped, that long train, fullof passengers, would fall into the stream. “Someone must go to the station and warn thestation-master,” Kate thought. But who was to go? She would have to go herself. T here wasno one else.

In wind and rain she started on her difficult way. Soon she was at the bridge that crossedthe Des Moines River, a bridge also built of wood, just like the bridge across Honey Creek. The storm had not washed this away, but there was no footpath across it. She would have tocross it by stepping from sleeper (枕木) to sleeper. With great care she began the dangerouscrossing, sometimes on her hands and knees, hardly daring to look down between the sleepers into the wild flood waters below. If she should slip, she would fall between the sleepers, intothe rapidly flowing stream.

At last—she never knew how long it had taken her—she felt solid ground under her feet. But there was no time to rest. She still had to run more than half a mile and had only a fewminutes left. Unless she reached the station before the express did, many, many lives wouldbe lost.

She did reach the station just as the train came into sight. Fortunately the station-masterwas standing outside. “The bridge is down! Stop the train! Oh, please stop it!” Kate shoutedbreathlessly.

The station-master went pale. He rushed into the station building and came back with asignal light. He waved the red light as the train came into the station. It was not a second tooearly.

Digital technology—email and smart phones especially—have vastly improved workers'ability to be productive outside of a traditional office. Even so, most white-collar work stillhappens in an office. One reason is that, according to findings of a new survey (调查) ofoffice workers conducted by WakefieldResearch for the IT company Citrix, most bosses aredoubtful about remote working. Half of the workers say their boss doesn't accept it, and only35 percent say it's tolerated,

Skeptical bosses will likely have their doubts reinforced (加深) by the same survey, which shows that 43 percent of workers say they've watched TV or a movie while “working”remotely, while 35 percent have done housework, and 28 percent have cooked dinner.

It is true, however, that working at home makes people much more efficient (高效的),because it allows workers to take care of annoying housework while still getting their jobsdone. It's much faster, for example, to shop for groceries at a quarter to three than to stand

inline during the after-work rush.

The fact that such practices remain officially unaccepted reflects how far we haven'tcome as a society from the days when we expected every full-time worker to be supported bya fulltime homemaker.

More broadly the Wakefield survey suggests that employers may be missing a low-costway to give workers something of value. Sixty-four percent of those survey participants whohaven't worked remotely would rather give up some bonus in order to get even one day aweek working from home. Under such circumstances, smart firms need to find ways to lettheir employees have enough flexibility to manage their time efficiently.

28. Why do some employers hesitate to allow remote working?

A. They fear losing control of their workers.

B. They want to stick to their routine practice.

C. They have little trust in modem technology.

D. They are used to face-to-face communication.

29. What seems to be most workers' attitude toward remote working?

A. Doubtful.

B. Favorable.

C. Reserved.

D. Disapproving.

30. What does the author suggest smart firms do?

A. Shorten their office hours.

B. Give employees a pay raise.

C. Adopt flexible work patterns.

D. Reduce their staff's workload.

2016 年全国硕士研究生入学统一考试英语(一) 真题及答案(完整版) Text 1 France, which prides itself as the global innovator of fashion, has decided its fashion industry has lost an absolute right to define physical beauty for woman. Its lawmakers gave preliminary approval last week to a law that would make it a crime to employ ultra-thin models on runways. The parliament also agreed to ban websites that" incite excessive thinness" by promoting extreme dieting. Such measures have a couple of uplifting motives. They suggest beauty should not be defined by looks that end up with impinging on health. That's a start. And the ban on ultra-thin models seems to go beyond protecting models from starring themselves to health -as some have done. It tells the fashion industry that it move take responsibility for the signal it sends women, especially teenage girls, about the social tape -measure they must use to determine their individual worth. The bans, if fully enforced ,would suggest to woman (and many men )that they should not let others be orbiters of their beauty .And perhaps faintly, they hint that people should look to intangible qualities like character and intellect rather than dieting their way to sine zero or wasp-waist physiques . The French measures, however, rely too much on severe punishment to change a culture that still regards beauty as skin-deep-and bone-showing. Under the law, using a fashion model that does not meet a government-defined index of body mess could result in a $85,000 fine and six months in prison. The fashion industry knows it has an inherent problem in focusing on material adornment and idealized body types. In Denmark, the United States, and a few other countries, it is trying to set voluntary standard for models and fashion images there rely more on pear pressure for enforcement. In contrast to France's actions, Denmark's fashion industry agreed last month on rules and sanctions regarding age, health, and other characteristics of models .The newly revised Danish Fashion Ethical charter clearly states, we are aware of and take responsibility for the impact the fashion industry has on body ideals, especially on young people. The charter's main toll of enforcement is to deny access for designers and modeling agencies to Copenhagen. Fashion week, which is men by the Danish Fashion Institute .But in general it relies on a name-and -shame method of compliance. Relying on ethical persuasion rather than law to address the misuse of body ideals may be the best step. Even better would be to help elevate notions of beauty beyond the material standards of a particular industry. 21. According to the first paragraph, what would happen in France [A] Physical beauty would be redefined [B] New runways would be constructed

Suppose you won a translation contest and your friend Jack wrote an email to congratulate you, and ask advice on translation. Write him a reply to 1)thank him; 2)give your advice. You should write neatly on the ANWSER SHEET. Do not sign you own name at the end of the letter, use “Li Ming ” instead. Do not write the address .(10 point) Suppose your cousin LI MING has just been admited to a university write him/her a letter to: (1)Congratulate him/her,and (2)give him/her suggestions on how to get prepared for university life You should write about 100 words on ANSWER SHEET 2. DO not sign your own name at the end of the letter,Use zhangwei. I’m writing to express my gratitude for your congratulation on my success in the translation contest. As regard to my experience, I would like to offer you some proposals in this part. At the top of list is the persistence due to the fact that you could deserve the position after days or years of efforts that you have had in the field. What’s more, you are supposed to pay more attention to the way in which you finish your major, for it plays a significant role in the process. Thanks again and I do hope that my suggestions can be in favor of your future study.

Section IV Writing 47、 [参考范文] Dear Jack, Your letter of congratulations was received。Thank you for your nice words on my winning the c ontest。In the letter, you asked me about the skills to do translation,so the following are my a dvice for you。 Firstly, you should analyze the sentence structure, thus catching the meaning of the sentence。 Secondly, find the proper words to translate the meaning of the source language into the target l anguage。 Thirdly, revise your translation at least three times to check if there are any mistransl ations or missed meanings。 I hope my advice helpful。 Wish to see you soon。 I’m writing to express my gratitude for your congratulation on my success in the translation contest. As regard to my experience, I would like to offer you some proposals i n this part.
