When he came home, he went to see a doctor. “The reason I was tired, ” Jim says, “was that my kidneys (肾脏)were gone. ”Jim, 69, a former Air Force pilot, immediately started dialysis(透析) three days a week. A person of his age on dialysis usually lives only about four years. Transplants are a long-shot alternative. The National Kidney Foundation estimates that 13 people die every day while waiting for a donor with the right blood and tissue types.Jim’s wife, nephew and four family friends offered but weren’t a match. Jim was so discouraged that he was even considering not attending a reunion of some Air Force buddies(铁哥们). But his wife encouraged him to reunite with his old friends, among whom was one he hadn’t seen in 50 years: Doug Coffman. The two had met when they both were learning Vietnamese before they went overseas.Doug, then 70, felt a strong bond with his band of brothers, even though he hadn’t seen some of them in decades. Their connection went beyond the battlefield in ways most soldiers never experience.Doug had received help from his friends when he was in trouble, so he felt like it was a time that he could pay that ahead by donating a kidney to Jim. Fortunately, series of testing revealed not only that Doug’s tissue type matched Jim’s but also that he had the kidneys of a 35-year-old.The transplant was a success. “It’s pretty miraculous to be able to take an organ out of one person’s body—a living organ—put it in another person’s body, and have it work, ” Doug says. “And there’s nothing finer than knowing I’ve helped another person live a better life. ”4.From this text we know that Kidney transplant is ________.A.Expensive B.dangerous C.a matter of luck D.an unwise choice5.How old was Jim when he went overseas?A.About 17.B.About 19.C.About 22.D.About 25.6.What can we infer from Doug’s words in the last paragraph?A.Doug is happy to donate a kidney to Jim.B.Jim is having a better life than Doug.C.The kidney transplant is very successful.D.Modern medical science is very advanced.7.What is the theme of this text?A.Good luck.B.An operation.C.Paying it forward.D.Good relationship.CWhat is life? Like most great questions, this one is easy to ask but difficult to answer. The reason is simple: weknow of just one type of life and it’s challenging to do science with a sample size of one. The field of artificial life-called ALife for short — is the systematic attempt to spell out life’s fundamental principles. Many of these practitioners, so-called ALifers, think that somehow making life is the surest way to really understand what life is.So far no one has convincingly made artificial life. This track record makes ALife a ripe target for criticism, such as declarations of the field’s doubtful scientific value. Alan Smith, a complexity scientist, is tired of such complaints. Asking about “the point” of ALife might be, well, missing the point entirely, he says. “The existence of a living system is not about the use of anything.” Alan says. “Some people ask me, ‘So what’s the worth of artificial life?’ Do you ever think, ‘What is the worth of your grandmother?’”As much as many ALifers hate emphasizing their research’s applications, the attempts to create artificial life could have practical payoffs. Artificial intelligence may be considered ALife’s cousin in that researchers in both fields are enamored by a concept called open-ended evolution (演化). This is the capacity for a system to create essentially endless complexity, to be a sort of “novelty generator”. The only system known to exhibit this is Earth’s biosphere. If the field of ALife manages to reproduce life’s endless “creativity” in some virtual model, those same principles could give rise to truly inventive machines.Compared with the developments of Al, advances in ALife are harder to recognize. One reason is that ALife is a field in which the central concept — life itself — is undefined. The lack of agreement among ALifers doesn’t help either. The result is a diverse line of projects that each advance along their unique paths. For better or worse, ALife mirrors the very subject it studies. Its muddled (混乱的) progression is a striking parallel (平行线) to the evolutionary struggles that have shaped Earth biosphere.Undefined and uncontrolled, ALife drives its followers to repurpose old ideas and generated novelty. It may be, of course, that these characteristics aren’t in any way surprising or singular. They may apply universally to all acts of evolution. Ultimately ALife may be nothing special. But even this dismissal suggests something:perhaps, just like life itself throughout the universe, the rise of ALife will prove unavoidable.8.Regarding Alan Smith’s defence of ALife, the author is .A.supportive B.puzzled C.unconcerned D.doubtful9.What does the word “enamored” underlined in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?A.Shocked.B.Protected.C.Attracted.D.Challenged.10.What can we learn from this passage?A.ALife holds the key to human future.B.ALife and AI share a common feature.C.AI mirrors the developments of ALife.D.AI speeds up the process of human evolution.11.Which would be the best title for the passage?A.Life Is Undefined. Can AI Be a Way Out?B.Life Evolves. Can AI Help ALife Evolve, Too?C.Life Is Undefined. Can ALife Be Defined One Day?D.Life Evolves. Can Attempts to Create ALife Evolve, Too?DScientists and engineers are preparing for possible travel into interstellar (星际的) space, the area in between stars, in the distant future. A new report examines the possible problem of changes in language on long space trips. Two American researchers have explored one possible problem with such travel. They considered the possibility that changes in human language could develop overtime and lead to major communication problems with people on Earth. The language experts are professors Andrew McKenzie from the University of Kansas, and Jeffrey Punske of Southern Illinois University. The two recently published a paper, which considers very long trips necessary to reach interstellar space, estimated to be about 18 billion kilometers from Earth. It also examines the possibility of future colonization (殖民地的开拓) of distant stars.Languages naturally change as communities grow more isolated from each other, the researchers note in the paper. The long isolation of a community could lead to enough differences in language to make it impossible for community members back home to understand. “If you’re on this spaceship for 10 generations, new concepts and social issues will emerge, and people will create ways of talking about them,” McKenzie said in a statement. Such vocabulary would become specific to only that spaceship.“People on Earth might never know about these words, unless there’s a reason to tell them. And the further away you get, the less you’re going to talk to people back home,” McKenzie said. The researchers noted that in addition to new words being used, the language of people traveling on spaceships and living in colonies would experience many other changes. For example, the sounds of different letters would likely change overtime, affecting not only individual words, but the whole “grammatical system”, the paper states.Major changes in word and sentence structure could also create systematic language barriers overtime, the researchers said. “Given more time, new grammatical forms can completely replace current ones,” McKenzie said. 12.What is the possible result of long space travel according to the research?A.It may bring about many language barriers.B.People may suffer from mental problems.C.It may change people’s living environment.D.People could communicate more easily on Earth. 13.What does the underlined word “isolation” in paragraph 3 most probably mean?A.Connection.B.Distribution.C.Loneliness.D.Separation.14.What can we infer about the language used on spaceships from paragraph 4?A.It will form its own language system.B.It will replace the current language soon.C.It can be understood by people on Earth.D.It can be used to communicate with aliens.15.Why does the author mention McKenzie in the last paragraph?A.To present the way to create new languages.B.To explain the reason for language problems.C.To stress the inevitable trend of language changing.D.To show the importance of new grammatical systems.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)Worried about the climate? 16 . 2020年高考英语复习:七选五阅读专项练习题10篇AIn the middle of the Pacific Ocean lies the tiny island nation of Tuvalu, the fourth smallest country in the world. This group of four islands and five atolls (islands made from coral) is famous for its sandy beaches and turquoise (蓝绿色的) waters and has long been a popular tourist destination for nearby New Zealanders. However, the nation of Tuvalu is at risk of soon no longer existing; not because of war or political change, but because it will be covered by the rising ocean.Tuvalu is experiencing the harmful effects of global warming. As global temperatures rise, so does the ocean temperature. Due to the scientific law of “thermal expansion,” when water heats it get bigger. 1.Most experts claim that the effects of climate change will make Tuvalu uninhabitable within the next 50 years. Problems are already emerging. As sea levels rise, ocean water containing high levels of salt is travelling further and further inland destroying the little amount of soil Tuvaluans have to grow crops.Even before Tuvaluans began to suffer from the effects of climate change, lift on Tuvalu was tough. 2.Most of the land on an atoll is rock-hard arid any soil that exists on it is usually thin and poor for growing crops. The nation has always had to import food apart from fish.More serious than Tuvalu’s lack of home-grown food has been its lack of drinking water.3.Therefore, Tuvaluans depend almost entirely on rainwater for their water needs. Unfortunately, due to a geographical phenomenon known as La Nina, Tuvalu often suffers from long periods of drought. In autumn 2010, after seven months of no rain, the Prime Minister had to declare a state of emergency riot only because of a lack of drinking water, but also because the water left was polluted with cholera (霍乱) 4._____ Tuvalu’s problems have led some of its 11, 000 inhabitants to consider migrating to Australia or New Zealand.5.They know they’ll have to someday, but for as long as possible, they want to remain and make the world aware of what is happening to their homeland due to chimate change.BNewton's law of motion, where every action has a reaction, is appropriate not just to physics. 6.from the value of products and prices of produces to customer choices, advertising affects society and plays an important role in increasing business sales.7.When companies use advertising, sales increase, according to Marcel Bleustein-Blanchet, founder of a French advertising company. The increase in business sales also promotes the quality of life for consumers. Basically, advertising causes a chain reaction that increases the economy of the area where the product or service ad is.8.In the minds of consumers, advertising can add value to a product. The image or brand that advertising helps to create becomes a part of the product, which is what makes one product brand more valuable than the competitors. This is why a consumer may be willing to pay a higher price for a name brand product rather than buy a brand they are not familiar with at a lower cost.Pricing. 9.It spurs (促进)a sense of competition. When one company advertises a product for its price, its competitors want to stay competitive. Then they may lower their prices to meet the competition.Consumer choice. Advertising also has an influence on businesses because it leads to the creation of new products and improvement of existing products to meet consumers' needs. 10.However, when advertising introduces a new product that is better than the existing one. market share can quickly shift to the company offering the newly-advertised product.CPut on new set of gasses for a new viewToday I visited San Francisco’s modern-art museum. I was there to see a new exhibit about spaceflight.11.I like to “visit” this particular painting every time I go to the museum not only because it evokes(唤起)strong feelings, but because I always find something new. There's real pleasure to be found in revisiting a museum replaying a game or rewatching a movie. Some of that enjoyment comes from the feeling of familiarity of course.12..There’s always plenty more to see, hear, taste, smell, feel, of understand the second or third time around. But how do you discover the exciting new thing in the familiar? One way is approaching whatever task is at hand by searching for the things that you didn't see in the first time around. First, recognize that everything is always changing.13.Second, remove judgment from the experience, if possible, and just observe what's new. For example, look for the ways in which a change in your neighborhood is interesting or exciting.14.That could mean removing sugar, coffee, a certain kind of media from your life for a specified time. Once the break is over, that same thing will have more of its former interest or excitement.15.So is true that novelty is fun, but given enough of a break in between, repeated experiences regain that initial excitement.DThings to Keep Your Brain Sharp and Healthy Later in LifeThese behaviors and activities are proven to help keep your brain young.Keep learning new things.Learning new information and skills throughout your entire life helps to keep your brain strong even in the later years of life. Activities that have the highest value for brain health are novel and complex to each particular person. What is easy for one person may be challenging for another. 16.Exercise regularly.Exercise can improve our energy levels, sense of well-being, sleep, and brain health. 17.Identifying why we do not exercise permits us to systematically break down our barriers, and to slowly change our behaviors towards a healthy lifestyle.Socialize and have fun!Friends provide opportunities to enable the sharing of experiences, new learning, challenge, emotions, trust, and understanding. Friendship also provides the necessary motivation towards activity and involvement. Engagingin new pursuits with friends often helps develop new life roles, which provide us with an opportunity to feel appreciated, enjoy life, laugh, and have fun. 18.Be health conscious. It is important for us to take control of our health and understand that we are in charge of managing of our bodies. 19.Once we establish our own role in the management of our health, the importance of a close and trusting relationship with our physician becomes apparent.Slow down and appreciate the silence.20.Our brains require time to process information more deeply, in order to gain more benefit from our daily experiences. A fast-paced lifestyle can cause chronic stress and have other negative effects on our health and well-being. Reducing demands we place on ourselves is an important step towards stress reduction, and a more fulfilling life.Studies have shown a relationship between spirituality and the immune system. As we continually learn more about the potential of positive thoughts to influence health, people are beginning to integrate these practices more frequently into their daily lives, and experiencing life-changing results.ESchool phobia is a type of illness which causes the students, typically between the ages of 8-13, to be afraid to go to school. Symptoms include stomach aches, tiredness, shaking, a racing heart and frequent trips to the toilet.21.Most commonly it is the result of separation anxiety, but it can also be caused by different kinds of stress. A child who has recently moved, suffered a loss, or gone through a divorce may develop school phobia, and phobias can also develop in response to bullying, an unrecognized learning disability, and poor self-image.22.Many techniques can be used to manage school phobia. But research suggests that much more effective treatment is required for school phobia to prevent problems developing in later life. Children with this condition usually benefit from seeing a psychologist or doctor who can help the child and provide assistance to help parents and school officials support the child. As soon as school phobia is identified, parents should take action too.23., and it can prevent the child from succeeding in school.24.If bullying in school is a cause, for example, the bullying situation should be solved. A teacher can meet the child at the door and take him or her to class, and provide support so that the child feels a friendly adult is always available. Changes at home can include supportive language from parents, along with support like assistance with homework. If a child lacks confidence, parents may encourage the child to take up new hobbies. 25.Parents might also talk to their children about their own fears of school and how they got over them, and their own enjoyment of school and school-like activities.FFinancial Education-Awareness DilemmaWhen it comes to financial education, the majority of today's youth will regard it as a necessity for certain specific people who want to make their career in the financial world. 26.Actually, elementary financial education is a must for all, as money transaction is an essential part of our day-to-day life.Suppose you have $100 in a saving account that pays simple interest at the rate of 2% per year. lf you leave the money in the account, how much will you have accumulated after 5 years: more than $102, exactly $102,or less than $102? The test might look simple, but only half of the people surveyed gave the correct answer.27.The explanation goes as follows: People with low levels of financial literacy suffer from that lack of knowledge at every stage of their lives. Researchers on this subject say people with a high degreeof financial literacy are more likely to plan for their retirement. 28.On the contrary, people who have a lower degree of financial literacy tend to borrow more, accumulate less wealth, and pay more in fees related financial products. They are less likely to invest, more likely to experience difficulty with debt, and less likely to know the terms of their mortgages and other loans. Thus, the cost of this financial ignorance is very high. 29.What is the solution? 30.Like reading and math, financial education must become part of the core curriculum in our schools. Likewise, parents should engage in regular, constructive conversations about money matters. This will give their kids a solid foundation for financial well-being, whichwill keep on giving returns throughout the course of their lives.GFew things feel as painful as rejection. Rejection means not being invited to a friend's party. Rejection means having your actions criticized. Rejection means failure when you're trying to sell your idea. Every "no" indicates a door closed to you. 31.Developing your self-confidence is key. Rejection is simply the reaction or opinion of another person. 32.Never think you are worthless or unlovable. What you should do is make a list of things you have done well or contributions you have made. Review them every day. Fill your nighttime and early morning brain with confidence.Rejection will enhance whatever negative things you say to yourself. Even the most successful and confident people feel downhearted when rejected, but most of them never tell themselves how terrible they are. 33.Make sure what you say to yourself builds yourself up instead of tearing yourself down.34.Instead, they view it as an opportunity to further understand human relationships and inner strength. They avoid the pain of rejection and put rejection into context. Using rejection to your advantage involves looking on every blow as a learning experience. It also involves learning and growing from negative voice.35.You can feel the pain as you like, crying or locking yourself in, but don't let it become a long-term visitor. It is wise for you to respond positively and effectively.HAs is often the case, when we wake up feeling sleepy and with dark circles under eyes, many of us often make a decision: “I’m going to bed earlier tomorrow!” we are so determined. 36.We are still absorbed in what we are doing without realizing it is already too late the next day. This behavior is called “bedtime procrastination” (睡眠拖延症), and results from lack of self-control and our body clock.37.According to a study carried out by a group of health psychologists, 53 percent of the 2,400 participants said they didn’t follow their sleep schedule, delaying it at least twice a week. They delayed bedtime because they couldn’t stop doing other trivial things (琐事), which were keeping them up in the first place.People who generally have trouble resisting temptations and following their intentions firmly are also more likely to delay going to bed. They find it hard to control themselves. 38.Our body clock also plays an important role when it comes to bedtime. Those who get up late are more likely to postpone their bedtime than those who wake early every morning. Night owls would go to bed late at the very beginning of the weekday, even though they had to get up early for work and school. 39.Therefore, if we want to cure our bedtime procrastination, the intention to go to bed earlier is not enough. 40.We should have a clear understanding that bedtime procrastination is a big problem. The choices we make could turn out to be pretty important for our health.IJohannes Gutenberg-The pioneer of the printing pressJohannes Gutenberg was chosen to be the most important figure of the past millennium by the media. You may not be familiar with him. 41.Gutenberg is praised for having invented the printing press and therefore preparing the way for printing books. He was born into a wealthy family in the city of Mainz, Germany. His early training was in goldsmithing. In 1428,he moved to Strasbourg and lived there for almost 20 years.42.Gutenberg used his skills in metalwork for the mass production of books.43.That means that each copy of the Catholic bible and all of its 73 books were painstakingly handwritten by 10 penmen. Gutenberg fashioned a font(K)of over 300 characters, far larger than the fonts of today. To make this possible, Heinvented the variable-width mode and perfected the mixture of materials used by type factories up to the present century.44.Between 1450 and 1455,while preparing to produce a large Latin bible, Gutenberg thought to have printed a number of smaller books, a Calendar and a paper Letter of Indulgence The Bible or 42 lines, the oldest surviving printed book in the Western world, was completed by August 15,1456.The discovery of the modern printing press changed the way information was delivered45.Even today in the computer age, we rely heavily on the printed word or text for instruction, information and for the pleasure of reading literature.JThis summer, when earthquakes rocked Southern California on back-to-back days, it was a close-to-home reminder that we may one day experience the “Big One,” a quake with the power to kill and destroy. A few people, however, saw something else: a photo opportunity. Tourists poured to a large crack in a highway to see evidence of the damage for themselves and, of course, take a quick selfie.46.It feeds so many of the weakest parts of ourselves: our born attraction to images of human faces instead of landscapes or objects, our interest in capturing memories, and yes, our need for social approval. Yet, it is easy to feel uncomfortable with selfies and even laugh at them, especially when they are risky or in bad taste. So why do we take selfies?Selfies have become so common that my grandma does them when we get together. 47.Instead, selfies are a way for us to connect and communicate, and feel a more personal connection with people all around the world. In one example, researchers developed a #ScientistsWhoSelfie campaign studying how scientists posting photos of themselves with their work on social media influenced public opinion of the profession. 48.“Those scientists in general were described as warmer, but no less competent,” said Paige Jarreau, the lead author on the study. While some scientists refused at first, fearing that their colleagues would consider them self-centered or thinkthey take their work less seriously, those concerns disappeared once researchers explained that it could help build public trust. “This is not just me taking a duck-faced (嘟嘟嘴) selfie or trying to look cute on camera,” said Dr Jarreau. “This is me being able to better tell the story about my science in a way that helps people trust me.”49.Dr Jarreau recalled a road trip she made to national parks, where she witnessed so many people taking selfies, she began taking photos of the selfie-takers themselves. “Ask yourself: Why are you posting that picture?” she said. “If there was a platform that didn’t enable likes, would you post it?” After all, there are other ways to develop a social connection. You could send the photo to a private group. You could put it in a frame at home. You could be mindful in the moment by not taking it at all. 50.参考答案A篇:1.E2.B3.C4.A5.FB篇:6.G7.C8.A9.D10.FC篇:11.D12.E13.F14.G15.CD篇:16.C17.A18.E19.D20.GE篇:21.D22.G23.E24.C25.A F篇:26.B27.D28.F29.G30.AG篇:31.E32.B33.C34.G35.D H篇:36.D37.A38.C39.E40.F I篇:41.F42.D43.B44.G45.A J篇:46.B47.D48.G49.E50.A。

七选五My, what a big beak you have! For humans, adapting to climate change will mostly be a matter of technology. More air conditioning, better-designed houses and bigger flood defenses may help to make the effects of a warmer world less harmful. ____1____ In a paper published in Trends & Evolution, a team led by Sara Ryding, a PhD candidate at Deakin University, shows that is already happening. Climate change is already altering the bodies of many animal species, giving them bigger beaks (喙), legs and ears.In some species of Australian parrot, for instance, beak size has increased by between 4% and 10% since 1871. Another study, this time in North American dark-eyed juncos, another bird, found the same pattern. ____2____All that is perfectly consistent with evolutionary theory. “Allen’s rule”, named for Joel Asaph Allen, who suggested it in 1877, holds that warm-blooded animals in hot places tend to have larger body parts than those in temperate (温带的) regions. ____3____ Being richly filled with blood vessels, and not covered by feathers, beaks make an ideal place for birds to get rid of heat. Fennec foxes, meanwhile, which are native to the Sahara Desert, have strikingly large ears, especially compared with their Arctic cousins.Ms. Ryding is not the first researcher to take that approach. But it is hard, when dealing with individual species, to prove that climate change was the cause of an anatomical (解剖学的) changes. All sorts of other factors, from changes in prey to the evolving reproductive preferences of males or females, might have been driving the changes. ____4____ The team combined data from different species in different places. Since they have little in common apart from living on a warming planet, climate change is the most reasonable explanation.____5____ That may change as warming accelerates. Since any evolutionary adaptation comes with trade-offs (妥协), it is unclear how far the process might go. Bigger beaks might make feeding harder, for instance. Larger wings are heavier, and bigger legs cost more energy to grow. A.However, looking at the bigger picture makes the pattern clearer.B.For now, at least, the increase is small, never much more than 10%.C.Animals will have to rely on changing their bodies or their behaviors.D.It seems that the future world is going to be hotter than humans are used to. E.Therefore, the negative effects of a warmer world are visible in these animals’ bodies. F.Such adaptations boost an animal’s surface area relative to its body, helping it to release extra heat.G.Similar trends are seen in mammals, with species of mice and bats evolving bigger ears, legs and wings. In recent years the term “social distancing" has been at the center of public conversation. But it’s not “social” distance but physical separation that we are trying to promote. Preserving social ties — even at a distance — is essential for both mental and physical health.____6____ Modern technology has provided us with many tools. Not all tools promote social connection equally, however. And often such seemingly small choices can make a big difference between strengthening stronger social connections and giving in to growing social distance.____7____ When people overestimate the costs or underestimate the benefits of voice-based communication, it can create a misplaced bias (偏见) for text-based media. In one experiment, we tested whether the media through which people interact affect their sense of connection-and how expectations about certain technologies impact the communication media they choose to use. Although voice-based interactions (such as phone calls) can produce stronger connections, text-based media (such as e-mails) are often preferred. We asked participants to connect with someone that they hadn’t interacted with recently, either through e-mail or over the phone. ____8____ They generally assumed that they’d feel more connected when interacting over the phone than over e-mail. But they also predicted that talking on the phone could be more uncomfortable than dashing off an e-mail. Although these participants believed that talking encouraged stronger bonds, most of them said they’d rather send an e-mail than call the person up. Fears about awkwardness push individuals toward text-based methods for communicating.____9____Then we followed up with them after they had done so. As expected, we found that people did form meaningfully stronger bonds when interacting over the phone than overe-mail. More importantly, though, there was no difference in the amount of discomfort when reconnecting on the phone. The human voice appears to provide benefits for connection. Our work suggests that feelings of social connection are apparently facilitated by one’s voicerather than their keyboard.____10____A.So the next time you think about how best to connect, consider calling.B.We again had participants actually connect using either e-mail or phone.C.Participants first predicted what it would be like to get in touch in these two ways. D.When they interact on the phone, they find they are more connected than in real life. E.Those modes of communication are perfect choices at the time of physical distancing. F.Then how might we best stay connected to others while maintaining physical distance? G.Decisions on how to connect tend to be based on expectations of potential pros and cons of the interaction. We all want to make a great first impression, whether it’s meeting our new colleagues for the first time or getting to know people at a social event. ____11____First days can be stressful: Not only are you learning the ins and outs of your job role, but you are also learning the ropes about office culture, coworker personalities, and team interactions. ____12____ Whether it comes naturally or not, try to show friendliness and openness to everyone with whom you cross paths. Make an effort to introduce yourself to those around you, especially those you will be working closely with on a daily basis. Be kind to those around you, and show a real interest in learning about your new work environment. ____13________14____ What does that mean? Do not be scared by people who have worked at your company longer—go ahead and volunteer for projects and do your best to show your boss and team members that you are not only responsible, but eager to show what you can do. If there are any after-work events, be sure to attend. Some people work in a casual office atmosphere, where rules are a bit laid back. But even if you suspect this might be the case for your new workplace, the first day on the job is not the time to fully embrace the slack(懈怠). ____15____ That means keeping your cellphone on vibrate or silent and putting it away for the day. Avoid all personal calls and emails during work hours. And do not surf the internet for non-work-related tasks, even if you notice others doing so.As the newbie in the office, it’s ultimately your responsibility to learn the ropes about what’s expected in terms of dress, office culture, etc. But on your very first day, do everything you can to show your boss and colleagues you are a valuable part of the team.A.It is a lot to take in, but now is not the time to be shy.B.Initiative is the most important thing for a new employee to get started.C.Whether it’s fair or not, people make assumptions based on physical presentation.D.You are being held to a higher standard than those who have been at the company longer. E.The very first day of your very first professional job, however, may just be the defining moment.F.Instead, keep it extremely professional until you have gotten a chance to witness the culture firsthand.G.People will pick up on your genuineness, which will go a long way toward making a great first impression.Memorizing a speech in one night is not an easy task, but it’s possible. There are hundreds of different memorization techniques out there. ____16____Write out the entire speech. Simply take a piece of paper and a pen and write out the entire speech. ____17____ Many people memorize information better when they are actively recording it. Copying the speech on another piece of paper can help to commit that information to memory.____18____ Much like writing the speech out on paper, typing the speech can also help commit the information to memory through visual learning. Since typing is generally faster than handwriting, you may have more time to type the speech several times in one night. There is no need to print the typed speech each time that you type it. However, you may be more likely to remember things that are handwritten rather than typed.Rehearse your speech for a friend.____19____ It is important to practice the speech in front of someone to ensure that you really know the information. Request that your friend give you some tips. They may be able to tell you if you are not speaking loud enough or if you are talking too quickly.Record yourself rehearsing the speech. If you don’t have anyone to practice with, try recording yourself while you rehearse your speech. Video recording is the best because you will be able to watch the recording and critique your speech and body language.____20____ Avoid trying to memorize the speech word for word. Normally, it is not necessary to recite a speech word for word. It is more important to remember all of the topics that you need to coverduring the speech. Spend time memorizing the bullet points, important facts and statistics, and the layout of your speech in order to guarantee that you cover all of the information that needs to be covered.A.Type up the speech.B.Make a list of things that scare you about the speech.C.If the speech is relatively short, consider writing it out multiple times.D.However, the best method is the basic, tried-and-true strategy of repetition and practice.E.It is important to remember to take care of your body even when you are cramming for a presentation.F.You can also listen to the recording while you are doing other things to help remember the information.G.Sometimes you may think that you know your speech well, but you freeze up when you perform it in front of people. What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? ____21____ For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say, “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks terrible. ____22____ Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of carrying out. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some day.____23____ It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now.” They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure.____24____Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book Man Watching calls “the mouth cover”. He says there are several typical forms, such as covering part of the mouth with fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the mouth. ____25____ Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth, or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things, and in particular the context in which the lie is told.A.However, this is only one side of the story.B.Or is it something worse than what it really is?C.A “white lie” appears to be a lie that the teller tells to profit or gain some advantage from it. D.The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch (痒).E.Why people sometimes cover their mouths while lying is that they wish those words had not come out of their mouths.F.Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself or herself from lying.G.Research has also studied the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie.“Regards”. “Best wishes”. “Take care”. The words at the end of an email may seem unnecessary. ____26____ Even the most common “Sent from my iPhone” can tell that the sender has taken the time to reply although clearly not at their desk. Sign-off may just be a word or a short phrase, followed by your signature, and yet finding the right tone to close your email often requires a surprising amount of thought and skill. When you’re struggling with how to end an email, it’s best to consider the context (语境).____27____ Here are three of the most common email settings and the tried-and-true sign-offs that work best for each.Best wishes. ____28____ However, be aware of its greeting card vibe (氛围) and use it only when it fits well with the tone of your email.Cheers. A recent study by the email app Boomerang rated cheers as the most likely sign-off to get an email response. ____29____ Cheers works well if your email is friendly andconversational but, unless you’re actually British or Australian, it may come off as affected in more formal settings.Best. He wakes up at dawn, goes for a run, sips black coffee while ripping through emails, and then steps into a freezing cold shower. This is a routine designed to reduce the stress of running three different companies for 18 hours a day.Although Rapp’s practices may sound extreme, he is one of a group of followers of a growing movement. ____32____ Inspired by influential figures in different fields, including entertainers, athletes, entrepreneurs and scientists, positive stress practitioners seek out some combination of extreme temperatures, restrictive diets, punishing exercise routines and general discomfort.Rapp argues that positive stress keeps him balanced. In addition to running and freezing showers, Rapp uses ice baths, hot yoga, and unconventional eating practices such as eliminating dairy, sugar, and various other foods high in carbohydrates. He believes that these practices, which put stress on his body, actually make him feel less stress from work. ____33____ It was he himself that started using these methods in college, where he got into the habit of taking ice bathsto recover from sports. He got back into it while trying to get his three companies off the ground.Rapp works long hours and sleeps only five to seven hours a night but he said he only gets sick once a year. ____34____One thought leader in the positive stress world is Dutch extreme athlete Wim Hof, who earned the name “ice man” for his ability to withstand severe cold using deep breathing exercises. Hof’s ideas have become popular among tech industry elites and, thanks to Hof, cold showers are now a trend. Indeed, some even call it a form of therapy.____35____ Some medical professionals argue that positive stress is not for everyone, and that it might even be dangerous for people who are unhealthy or older.A.Rapp’s routine is a good example of followers of the movement.B.This view of stress argues that stress might actually be beneficial.C.However, Rapp does not credit anyone in particular for his choices.D.But he thinks too much stress is harming his physical and mental health.E.But it is important to note that not everyone agrees with these practitioners.F.For him, positive stress involves pushing the body to extremes and forcing it to build up a tolerance.G.It consists largely of tech industry workers who claim that such radical tactics will help them live better and longer. In a perfect world, people would not test medicines on animals. Such experiments are stressful and sometimes painful for animals, and expensive and time-consuming for people.____36____ That is why there are some 50 to 100 million animals used in research around the world each year.____37____ Even so, its scientists use some 12 million animals a year, most of them mice and rats, for medical research. Official statistics show that just 1.1 million animals are used in research in America each year. But that is misleading. The American government does not think mice and rats are worth counting and, as these are the most common laboratory animals, the true figure is much higher. ____38____Now Europe is changing the rules governing animal experiments by limiting the number of animals used in labs. ____39____ In addition, sharing all research results freely should help to reduce the number of animals for scientific use. At present, scientists often share only the resultsof successful experiments. If their findings do not fit the hypothesis (假说) being tested, the work never sees the light of day. This practice means wasting time, money, and animals’ lives in endlessly repeating the failed experiments.Animal experimentation has taught humans a great deal and saved countless lives.____40____ Europe’s new measures should eventually both reduce the number of animals used in experiments and improve the way in which scientific research is done.A.They should be stopped.B.Lab animals are mainly used in developed countries.C.Japan has even less comprehensive data than America.D.It needs to continue, even if that means animals sometimes suffer.E.Europe, on the whole, has the world’s most restrictive laws on animal experiments.F.Yet animal experimentation is still needed to help bridge wide gaps in medical knowledge. G.Alternatives to animal testing, like using human tissue, are now strongly recommended.Technology is an amenity (舒适,便利) of modern life nowadays. However, hackers (黑客) are standing beside you! However, a new study led by body language expert Dr. Harry Witchel shows this isn't always the case.In his research, he asked 44 participants aged 18 ~ 35 to play a geography quiz game consisting of nine difficult questions so that they often got the answer wrong. Seated participants interacted with a computer alone in a room while their faces were video recorded. After the quiz, the participants were asked to rate their experience using a range of 12 emotions including " bored" , interested" and " frustrated". Meanwhile, their facial expressions were then analyzed by computer frame by frame in order to judge how much they were smiling based on a scale of0 to 1.Dr. Witchel said, " According to some researchers, a real smile reflects the inner state of cheerfulness or amusement. However, Behavioral Ecology Theory suggests that all smiles are tools used in social interactions , meaning cheerfulness is neither necessary nor rich for smiling. Our study showed that in these Human-Computer Interaction experiments, smiling isn't driven by happiness; it isassociated with subjective engagement ( 主观参与), which acts like a social fuel for smiling, even when socializing with a computer on your own.Surprisingly, participants didn't tend to smile during the period when they were trying to figure out the answers. However, they did smile right after the computer game informed them if their answer was correct or wrong. Participants smiled more often when they got the answer wrong. Dr.Witchel added: " During these computerized quizzes , smiling was greatly increased just after answering questions incorrectly. This behavior could be explained by self-ratings of engagement, rather than by ratings of happiness or frustration.1. Why did Dr. Witchel use difficult questions in the quiz game?A. People Generally Hold a Wrong View on HappinessB(2021)Terracotta Warriors from Xi' an, Shanxi province, are well- -known worldwide for their significance in history. Behind these relics, conservator--restorers work day and night to piece fragments together and restore these ancient figures.Lan Desheng is one of these restorers. Having majored in cultural heritage at Northwest University in Xi' an, he has restored more than 150 figures in the past 25 years. He imagines himself as a doctor from the Qin Dynasty (221- -206 BC), the time when these warriors were created. There are many different types of doctors in the world, but few could have diagnosed and treated those Qin warriors, who lived over 2,000 years ago," said the 52-year- old restorer.Over the years, the technology used to restore the figures has changed, but the fundamental methods remain the same. Abiding by the rule of minimum intervention, Lan and his team try to restore the relics by examining fragments and fitting them into the Terracotta Warrior figures. The process demands great attention to detail and also enables him to get to know his patients" better. Lan said the figures have colorful painting and sometimes even the fingerprints of the artisans who made the figures. The artisans' names were also carved into the warriors, but these signatures might be hard to find. If you look closely at the fragments, you can see traces of the artisans' fingerprints and complete palm prints left after they heavily slapped the clay. There are also traces of the hairs they shed," said Lan.After decades of experience, Lan can already tell the differences between works of Qin Court craftsmen and those of local artisans. Without a doubt, patience is essential when restoring these figures. Sometimes it might take years for missing fragments of a figure to be found, if it can ever be recovered. In some cases, we have been unable to locate the remaining parts of Terracotta Warriors that have been assembled for the past year or two. When this happens, there is nothing to do but stop work," Lan said.Despite these difficulties, Lan said this is his ideal job. He is proud to have contributed to the process of restoring these historic relics. We employ materials used in the Qin Dynasty to restore and repair the warriors and their horses- -a legacy we will pass on to the next generation," he said.1. Restorers have to have a degree in cultural heritage.D. The methods have greatly changed due to advanced technology.2. What could you find if you observe the figures of Terracotta Warriors closely?A. Names of the warriors.B. The figures' palm prints.C. Details of the figures' hair.D. Traces of the figure makers fingerprints.3, Why is restoring Terracotta Warriors difficult?A. Restorers are sometimes forced to stop assembling.B. Restorers don't know where to find the remaining parts.C. It may take a long time to find all of the missing parts, if ever.D. Restorers have to work together to piece fragments together.4. What is the passage mainly about? 'A. Why repairing the relics is important.B. What difficulties Lan has experienced in his career.C. What the future generation can do to restore the relics.D. How conservator-restorers repair the figures of Terracotta Warriors.主题二——时事热点C( 2020届江西省上饶六校高三联考)The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the past five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution. But there's a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years. He explains that every time synthetic (合成的) clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can't collectthese microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine , microfibers enter the sewer and finally end up in the sea.In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than l ,900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers. This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants.Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental " solution" . Even though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he's had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design -his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn't get a satisfying answer.Only one women's clothing company , Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.1. What has happened during the past five years?A. Fabric has become much stronger.B. Plastic pollution has been less serious.C. Many plastic bottles have been reused.D. Microfibers have been greatly improved.2. What does Browne think of washing synthetic clothes?A. It is adding mierofibers to the clothes.B. It is worsening environmental problems.C. lt is making synthetic clothes last longer.D. It is doing great damage to washing machines.3. What can be inferred about Browne's Benign by Design research project?A. It has achieved great success.B. It hasn't got anything done.C. It is known to very few people.D. It is facing some difficulties.4. What's the best title for the text?A. It Is Important to Learn to RecycleB. It Is Never Easy to Solve Pollution ProblemsC. Recycled Plastic Clothing: Solution or Pollution?D. Are Human Beings Moving Forward or Backward?DDuring a decline in tourism, one national park in Thailand has witnessed a dramatic rise in visitors recently. So many are the hermit crabs ( 寄居蟹) flooding into the otherwise empty beaches of Koh Lanta that shells for them to live in have become in short supply. The Thai government moved quickly to ease the housing shortage, launching a public appeal for empty shells that netted over 200kg. On December 5 these were distributed around the park in a ceremony.Hermit crabs rely on shells to protect their soft bodies, moving to larger shells as they grow. On Koh Lanta and the surrounding smaller islands, their rapid increase seems to be a natural phenomenon, rather than directly related to the absence of tourists. But the shortage of shells maybe man-made: pretty ones have long been gathered to be sold as goods. Crabs had begun to make do with potential death-traps such as plastic caps and bottles. The shell drive was part of a government initiative to regain the balance of nature. I have instructed all nationalparks to do whatever it takes," says Varawut Silpa-archa, the minister for natural resources. His inspiration comes from the pause in tourism brought on by COVID-19. A ban on international visitors and the closure of national parks have helped nature recover, bringing endangered leatherback turtles back onto Thai beaches. In the coastal provinces of Phang Nga and Phuket, turtles have laid the largest number of eggs for 20 years. The government has decided to try to copy the short break forced on it by COVID- 19 in future. From now on, all national parks will be required to close for a short period during the off season and to limit the number of tourists through a reservation system when they are open. Although such restrictions mean reduced earnings from tourism in the short term, in the longer run more parks may help to keep the tourists coming.1 .What happened to the beaches of Koh Lanta recently?A. They saw a constant stream of tourists.B. They were packed with hermit crabs.C. They became completely empty.D. They got flooded by seawater.2. What's the author's attitude towards human's behaviors?A. Supportive.B. Indifferent.C. Critical.D. Not mentioned.3. Why are turtles mentioned in Paragraph4?A. To warn turtles are dying out.B. To stress ecological diversity of Thailand.C. To illustrate the birth of V arawut's inspiration.D. To prove beaches are their ideal habitats.4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Authorities Help to Find Shelters for Homeless Hermit CrabsB. Developing Economy or Protecting Animals?C.
