Have you ever considered all the English expressions that include words about clothes? Le t’s have a look.

People wear pants to cover the lower part of their bodies. We sometimes say that people who are nervous have ants in their pants. Sometimes, people may get caught with their pants down. They are found doing something they should not be doing. And, in every family, one person takes

control. Sometimes a wife tells her husband what to do. Then we say she wears the pants in the family.

Boots are a heavy or strong kind of shoes. People who are too big for their boots think they are more important than they really are. I dislike such people.

My father is an important person. He runs a big company. He wears a suit and tie, and a shirt with sleeves that cover his arms. Theaters of the Past

The Greek Theater

Theaters developed in many parts of Greece. Ancient Greek theaters were built in natural open air sites on conveniently shaped hills. This allowed a great mass of people to enjoy a show at a time. Due to this, actors placed emphasis on exaggerated (夸张的) action and speech. And, colorful symbolic masks and costumes were used.

The Medieval Theater

The Medieval theater started in churches. That’s why medieval plays were about Bible stories. At first, it became a custom for priests (牧师) to act out brief scenes during Christmas and Easter. These acts attracted large crowds. Finally the church refused to allow priests to participate in any such events again, so ordinary people began these performances outside. Performances were set in the town square, with several stage settings around it.

The Elizabethan Theater

The England’s theater d eveloped rapidly in the years following the defeat of the Spanish Navy. The dominant feature of Elizabethan theater was the stage, It has three parts: The fore stage for outside scenes ;the inner stage for scenes inside a building; an upper stage or balcony for various purposes. The reason for this design is that there were no scene changes, or breaks during the play. Very little scenery was used, so the actors had to create a scene through their voices and dialogues. This led to a more poetic script , and poets became the main source of script writing. The Restoration Theater

Some of the plays told sad stories, but the majority of the plays were really funny. Many specialized machines were used to create the scene. The stage was a very clever idea , in that on the sides of the stage large back shutters (百叶窗) were painted with the scene.

The World Wildlife Fund for Nature - WWF - reports that nearly 3 billion animals were killed or displaced by Australia’s wildfires in 2019 and 2020. The number, reported in late July, was about three times higher than an earlier WWF estimate. “It ranks as one of the worst wildlife disasters in modern history,” said WWF - Australia Chief Executive officer Dermot O’ Gorman.

The WWF said it used different methods to estimate wildlife populations, including information from over 100, 000 studies. The scientists created models to estimate the number of creatures found in areas destroyed by fire. Project leader Lily Van Eeden from the University of Sydney said the research was the first continent - wide examination of animals affected by wildfires. “Other nations can build upon this research to improve understanding of bushfir e impacts everywhere,” she said.

Those creatures that fled destroyed habitats faced a lack of food and shelter or the likelihood of moving into already occupied habitats. Researchers said the destruction will cause some species to become extinct before th eir existence is even recorded. “We don’t even know what we are losing,” said Chris Dickman, a professor of ecology at the University of Sydney. “These were species that were here and now they have gone. . . It’s almost too tragic to think about,” Dickman added.

The WWF report calls for improvements in habitat connectivity to help species escape from fires. It also calls for identifying and protecting habitat that was not burned to help save threatened species. An expanded report on the study is expected later this year.

The wildfires started in September 2019 and continued through March of this year. Scientists say the fires were fueled by higher than normal temperatures and years of drought in the Australian bush. The fires caused 34 human deaths and destroyed nearly 3, 000 homes. The WWF said that over the past year, it had raised money from donors to allocate emergency aid to the front lines of the fires to help injured and displaced wildlife.

1.What do we know about Australia’s wildfires in 2019 and 2020?

A.They were the worst disasters in history.

B.Over 3 billion animals died in the wildfires.

C.They caused more damage than calculated earlier.

D.Most animals moved to already occupied habitats.

2.How did Chris Dickman feel about the extinction of some species?

A.Astonished. B.Pained. C.Annoyed. D.Puzzled.

3.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.The wildfires last a whole year.

B.The wildfires were caused by the heat.

C.The wildfires also cause damages to humans.

D.The wildfires were soon under control with donations.

4.What lesson can we learn from the text?

A.Humans shouldn’t occupy wildlife habitat.

B.Humans shouldn’t overestimate the bushfire.

C.We should raise money for wildlife protection.

D.We should develop the methods to prevent wildfires.

Sport is not only physically challenging, but can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create too much anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has

indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.

The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents and coaches’ criticisms to heart and find faults in themselves.

Coaches and parents should also pay attention that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find faults with youngsters’ performances. Positive support should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive support motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.

1.An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is_____________.

A.to make sport less competitive

B.to increase their sense of success

C.to reduce their mental stress

D.to make sport more challenging

2.According to the passage, sport is positive for young people in that_____________.

A.it can help them learn more about society

B.it enables them to find faults in themselves

C.it can provide them with valuable experiences

D.it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves

3.Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes_____________. A.believing that criticism does good to their early development

B.without realizing criticism may destroy their self-confidence

C.in order to make them remember life’s lessons

D.so as to put more pressure on them

4.According to the passage parents and coaches should_____________.

A.pay more attention to letting children enjoy sport

B.help children to win every game

C.train children to cope with stress

D.enable children to understand the positive aspect of sport

【答案】

2.细节理解题。由第二段中的The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place.体育活动能为年轻人提供极其有价值的一生都有用的人生经历。可知选C。

3.细节理解题。由最后一段中的Following a game many parents and coaches focus on the outc ome and find faults with youngsters’ performances. 以及Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.

On my first day of high school,I asked an eleventh grader where my class was. And he told me it was “on the fourth floor, next to the pool.” I found out five minutes later that we don't even have a fourth floor and there's no pool either! Besides that,I didn't have any trouble with the older kid.

I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load (工作量) and size of the school. I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours,so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 550,but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade.

The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I've prepared for the night before, gotten an A,and not remembered anything later. I've changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Don't take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more useful!

While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools, they're also around in high school. I have a lot of friends who promised they'd never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have “fun” and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when you're applying for (申请) college. The “friends” who say you're a loser for not partying are really not your friends at all. It's hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions, but don't follow their footsteps. Create your own path in life and make your own decisions.

1.What does the author think of high school?

A.There are very few activities.

B.It's hard to meet new people there.

C.It requires hard work.

D.There isn't enough time for homework.

2.The author advises high school students to________.

A.get ready for tests the night before

B.give up sports

C.choose useful classes

D.try their best to get good grades

3.The text is probably written by________.

A.a high school student B.a chemistry teacher

C.a college student D.a sports player

4.The last paragraph mainly tells us________.

A.about the trouble caused by drinking and smoking

B.not to go to any party in high school

C.not to lose ourselves in high school

D.about the importance of making friends

【答案】

1.C

2.C

3.A

I traveled to London, England in the spring of 2016. Actually, I traveled with CAPA International Education on a study program. At that time, I did a full three-month program but I traveled on weekends and during breaks.

I used to live in a small town outside New York. The idea of big cities has always excited me and I wanted to take advantage of that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It was a great opportunity for me to see how independent I could be in another country, because I hope to travel a lot more in the future.

I lived in a flat in Ealing Broadway with several other students from different American schools. The biggest surprise I found there was the culture shock I experienced. I had expected traveling to London to be an easy transition (转变) for me because I thought their culture was close to that of America. But you know the language and the people were greatly different from what I had expected. They had different accents. In fact, they were noisy and more free-thinking than most Americans I knew.

However, I tried to take part in their giant Chinese New Year celebration in Trafalgar Square. I went to several Jewish society holiday celebrations and actively participated in any cultural activities I knew at that time. It was great to be able to truly put myself in their culture. These are experiences I couldn't get anywhere else.

I would suggest people hoping to follow in my footsteps not let anything hold them back from exploring the foreign cultures presented to them. Yes, you are there for school, but your number one priority (优先) is yourself. So make sure you go home with no regrets. Do not miss anything! 1.What was the author's main purpose in going to London?

A.To go sightseeing.

B.To visit some relatives.

C.To join in a study program.

D.To experience the life in a big city.

2.What did the author think of the opportunity of traveling to London?

A.It would change his life.

B.It would test his independence.

C.It would make his dream come true.

D.It would help improve his communication ability.

3.What was beyond the author's expectation after arriving in London?

A.Culture differences. B.Unfriendly students.

C.His living conditions. D.Some strange accents.

4.In the last paragraph, the author mainly advises people studying abroad to ________. A.explore more interesting places for traveling

B.try to receive more international education

C.combine study with exploring foreign cultures

D.look for more ways to deal with the culture shock

The Boy Made It!

One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute. Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.

He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed out. The f irst thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.

Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could. By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how mu ch longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could—he huddled(蜷缩) in his cave and slept.

The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.

Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls’ survival show. Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode(一期节目)of Man vs. Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out. When Grylls heard about Nicholas’ amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive. 1.What happened to Nicholas one Sunday afternoon?

On Monday, I stopped my car in front of my daughter Juliet’s middle school. She jumped in the front seat, feeling down. She asked me to help her study for her science test.

“Dad, I need to memorise a unit about the Reproductive Cycle o f Plants. And I can hardly make it.”

“You know memorising seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in tests if you work on trying to understand the material.”

Juliet was open to my advice. It was Monday afternoon and we had two nights to study before the test on Wednesday. I suggested a plan. “Tomorrow night, you are going to teach the material to me. Tonight, read the unit. Prepare to teach.”

Asking her to teach me was an unusual idea but I was determined to do it. Studies show teaching somebody else is a very useful way to learn. Even if you don’t do the teaching, the act of preparing to teach leads to more learning than just trying your best to memorise the material. On Tuesday afternoon, Juliet sat down with her science book facing me and said, “Okay Dad, let’s study.” I wanted her to teach me. But false starts happened. I couldn’t be too hard on her. So instead we started with me asking her some simple questions. She knew some but not others. When she didn’t know the answers, I enc ouraged her to check the book.

She started checking things that didn’t make sense. And she was actively seeking to test her understanding. I was happy to see it. She wasn’t memorising; she was trying to make sense of things, which was exactly what I had hoped she would do.

1.Why did Juliet feel down?

A.Because she failed her science test.

B.Because she had trouble memorising a unit.

C.Because she knew nothing about planting.

D.Because she couldn’t follow her teacher.

2.In the writer’s opinion, which was the key to best learni ng?

A.Memorising. B.Testing.

C.Questioning. D.Understanding.

3.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A.Making her check the book.

B.Using simple questions to test her.

C.Encouraging her to read the unit.

D.Asking her to teach me the unit.

4.Which can be the best title for the passage?

A.A Creative Father

B.An Unexpected Test

(专项)高一年级英语阅读理解专项练习附答案(50篇)

高中阅读理解专项训练附答案解析 1.篇 Language as a System of Symbols(符号) Of all systems of symbols, language is the most highly developed. It has been pointed out that human beings, by agreement, can make anything stand for anything. Human beings have agreed, in the course of centuries of mutual dependency, to let the various noises that they can produce with their lungs, throats, tongues, teeth, and lips systematically stand for certain happenings in their nervous systems. We call that system of agreements language. There is no necessary connection between the symbol and that which it stands for. Just as social positions can be symbolized by feathers worn on the head, by gold on the watch chain, or by a thousand other things according to the culture we live in, so the fact of being hungry can be symbolized by a thousand different noises according to the culture we live in. However obvious these facts may appear at first glance, they are actually not so obvious as they seem except when we take special pains to think about the subject. Symbols and the things they stand for are independent of each other, yet we all have a way of feeling as if, and sometimes acting as if, there were necessary connections. For example, there are people who feel that foreign languages are unreasonable by nature; foreigners have such funny names for things, and why can’t they call things by their right names? This feeling exhibits itself most strongly in those English and American tourists who seem to believe that they can make the natives of any country understand English if they shout loud enough. Like the little boy who is reported to have said, “Pigs are called pigs because they are such dirty animals, ” they feel that the symbol is inherently connected in some way with the things symbolized. 1.Language is a highly developed system of symbols because human beings _______. A.have made use of language for centuries B.use our nervous systems to support language C.have made various noises stand for any events D.can make anything stand for anything by agreement 2.What can we conclude from Paragraph 2? A.Different noises may mean different things. B.Our culture determines what a symbol stands for. C.The language we use symbolizes our social positions. D.Our social positions determine the way we are dressed. 3.In Paragraph 3 the underlined phrase “take special pains” probably means “_______”. A.try very hard B.take our time C.are very unhappy D.feel especially painful 4.In Paragraph 3, the example of the little boy is used to show that _______. A.adults often learn from their young B.“pig” is a dirty word because pigs are dirty C.words are not connected with the things they stand for
