Robots make me nervous—especially the ones which seem to think for themselves. I was embarrassed to admit this till I heard that Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, felt the same way. Gates said in an interview with the social networking and news website Reddit: "I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage well. A few decades after that, though, the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern."

Well, maybe I don't have to worry about my computer and kitchen equipment yet. After I use them I can always pull the plug. But in the future, machines might find a way to prevent us from switching them off. There's a terrible thought!

Maybe the problem with computers too clever for us is not that they are evil like some we've seen in sci-fi movies. What could put us in danger is that they might be too efficient. That's what philosopher Nick Bostrom from Oxford University believes. He says that machines are indifferent to humans and in pursuit of their own goals, the destruction of people might be just additional damage. Bostrom gives us an example: A machine which might have its only goal to produce as many paperclips as possible might look at human bodies as extra material for paperclips and go after you. Because it is, well, a machine, it would not take pity on you.

It's a good thing that American writer Isaac Asimov thought about how far robots can go and left us his three rules of robotics. They state that a robot may not hurt a human being or allow the human being to come to harm.

I'm glad my machines at home are "dumb". All my cleaner wants to take over is the carpet in my living room. Let's hope they don't create an appliance which wants to take over the world!(1)The author quoted Bill Gates' words in Paragraph 2 in order to make the text________.

A. better-known

B. more persuasive

C. better-organized

D. more interesting

(2)An intelligent paperclip machine would harm us because _______.

A. it is much cleverer than us

B. it would take over the world

C. it has the strong feeling of destroying us

D. it would see us just as material

(3)How does the author feel about Isaac Asimov's rules of robotics?

A. Optimistic

B. Worried

C. Disappointed

D. Regretful

(4)What does the text mainly focus on?

A. The benefits of future robots.

No poem should ever be discussed or "analyzed", until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it. All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling 'interpretation' of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than "analyzing" it, if there isn't time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is "a criticism of life", "a heightening of life, enjoyment with others". It is "an approach to the truth of feeling", and it "can save your life". It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

(1)The passage indicates that analyzing a poem is .

A. not essential at all

B. a preparation for appreciating it

C. an approach to understanding it

D. optional in class sometimes

(2)The recitation of a poem by the teacher or a student in the classroom .

A. is the best way to understand it

B. easily arouses some discussion among the students

C. helps the teacher to analyze it

D. can not take the place of the poet reading it

(3)Which of the following statements may the author agree with?

A. The most important teaching goal is to have students read and recite every poem they learn.

B. Poetry is the foundation of all languages and literature courses.

C. The teaching of poetry should have been much more stressed.

D. Every English teacher is supposed to convey their love of poetry to their students.

【答案】(1)D

(2)A

(3)C

根据第三段中的“I have come to t hink, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than 'analyzing' it, if there isn't time for both”可知,如果课堂上没有时间同时朗读和分析诗歌的话,把时间花在朗读上比花在分析上要值得多,因此“分析诗歌”是可选择的的。

根据第二段中的“the reading of the poem is, finally, the most tel ling 'interpretation' of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once”告诉我们,朗读归根到底是对诗的最全面诠释;再根据“But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it”又告诉我们,即使是那些教学辅助手段也不能取代学生和老师朗读,更不能取代理解诗歌的最有效方法——背诵。故选A。

根据第三段中的“It(指poetry) also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies”告诉我们在语言和文学教学中,诗歌本应该获得比目前更加重要的位置,即诗歌教学本该得到更多的重视。

Plants are boring. They just sit there photosynthesizing (光合作用) while animals have all the fun. Right? Not so much. A new study has found that there is a long history of interactions between ants and plants. The ant and plant co-evolution (协同进化) started with ants feeding on plants and plants evolving ant-friendly features.

Plants make a number of different structures that are specific for ant use. Some plants have evolved features that persuade ants into defending them from attack from other insects and even mаmmаlѕ. Тhеѕе іnсludе hollow thorns that аntѕ will live іnѕіdе, or ехtra nесtаr (琼浆) оn lеаvеѕ or stems for the ants to eat. Some ants will just cheat and take the nectar and run, but some will stick around and attack anything that tries to hurt the plant. Other plants get ants to help them move their seeds around, by providing them with rich food packets attached to the seeds. The ant will pick up the seed and carry it away, eat the food packet, and leave the seed - often in a nutrient-rich area where it'll grow better, and since it's farther away from its parent, they won't have to compete for resources.

But scientists weren't sure how the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants got started. If evolution is an arms race between species developing ways to make use of their neighbors, then scientists wanted to know whether plants or ants fired the first shot. It was a chicken-and-egg question, whether things started with ants developing behaviors to take advantage of plants, or plants evolving structures to take advantage of ants.

The history of ants and plants evolving together goes back to the time of the dinosaurs, and it's not easy to tell from fossils who fired the first shot. However, it is a question of little significance. Scientists say their study maters because it provides a look at how these widespread and complex interactions evolved.

(1)Some plants attach food packets to their seeds in order to .

A.reward the ants

B.make a fool of ants

C.provide nutrition for the seeds

D.get the seeds moved around

(2)What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?

A.How plants and ants interact.

B.What ants do to protect plants.

C.How plants and ants survive attacks.

D.Why plants and ants need co-evolution.

(3)Which is true about the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants?

A.Ants depended more upon plants.

B.It caused a race for better evolution.

C.How it got started was uncertain.

D.It was of little value for future studies.

(4)What's the author's purpose of writing the passage?

A.To introduce a science research method.

B.To inform readers of a latest research finding

C.To arouse readers' interest in science research.

D.To criticize people's traditional views about plants.

A car dealership in my hometown of Albuquerque was selling six to eight new cars a day. I was also told that 72 percent of this dealership's first-time visitors returned for a second visit.

I was curious. How does a car dealership get 72 percent of its first-time visitors to return? And how can they sell six to eight cars a day in a declining car market?

When I walked into Saturn of Albuquerque that Friday, the staff there didn't know me from Adam; yet they shared with me their pricing policy, the profit margin on every model, and staff income. They even opened their training manuals for my review and invited me back on Saturday if I wanted more information.

On Sunday, the day after my second visit to the Saturn store, my wife, Jane, and I were walking as we frequently do. On this particular June morning, Jane gently slipped her hand in mine and said tenderly, "I don't know if you remember, but today's my fifth anniversary of being cancer-free." I was surprised, partially because I was embarrassed that I had forgotten and, partially because.... Well, I didn't know what to do with Jane's information.

The next day, Monday, Jane went off to work teaching school. Still not knowing what to do to mark this special occasion, I did the most impetuous thing I've ever done in my life: I bought a new Saturn. I didn't pick the color or the model, but I paid cash and told them I'd bring Jane in on Wednesday at 4:30. I told them why I was buying the car.

On Tuesday, it dawned on me that Jane always wanted a white car. I called the sales consultant at Saturn, and I asked him if he had anything white in the store. He said he had one left but he couldn't guarantee it'd still be available on Wednesday at 4:30 because they were selling so fast. I said I'd take my chances and asked him to put it in the showroom.

Wednesday came. Unexpectedly, someone in our family was admitted to the hospital. So, it wasn't until 9:30 Saturday morning when we finally made our way to the Saturn store. Jane had never been in a Saturn store. When we went through the front door, the Lord took control of her feet and her mouth. She saw that little white Saturn coupe all the way across the showroom floor. She quickly passed a multi-colored sea of automobiles, sat in the little white Saturn and said, "Oh, what a pretty little car. Can I have a new car?" I said, "No. Not until our son graduates from college." She said, "I'm sick and tired of driving that old Dodge, I want a new car." I said, "I promise, just three more semesters and he'll be out."

Next, Jane walked around to the front of the car. As she looked it over, she let out the most

blood-curdling, shrill scream I'd ever heard in 29 years of marriage.

Now, before I tell you why Jane screamed, let me tell you what the sales consultant had done. He had ordered a large, professionally engraved sign (white letters on blue). The sign stood alone on the hood of the little white Saturn coupe. It said "Congratulations, Jane. This car is yours. Five years cancer-free. Let's celebrate life. From Team Saturn"Every employee at Saturn of Albuquerque had signed the back of that sign.

Jane saw it, screamed, collapsed in my arms and cried loudly. I didn't know what to do. I was in tears. I took out my invoice (发票) from the previous Monday, pointing to the white coupe, said, "No, honey, this car isn't yours. I bought you this one." I tapped the invoice with my index finger. Jane said, "No, I want this one right here."

While this conversation was going on, there was no one in the store. The sales consultant had arranged it so that we could share the moment alone. Even so, it's impossible to have a lot of privacy when so many people are standing outside the showroom windows looking in. When Jane screamed and collapsed in my arms, I saw everybody outside applaud and begin to cry.(1)Why did the writer visit the Saturn of Albuquerque that Friday?

Persuasion is to convince someone to agree with you, just like art which also calls for special techniques to accomplish. According to the ancient Greeks, there are three basic tools of persuasion: ethos, pathos and logos.

Ethos is a speaker's way of convincing the audience that he is trustworthy, honest and reliable. One common way a speaker can develop ethos is by explaining how much experience or education he has in the field. After all, you're more likely to listen to advice about how to take care of your teeth from a dentist than a fireman.

Pathos is a speaker's way of connecting with an audience's emotions. For example, a politician who is trying to convince an audience to vote for him might say that he alone can save the country from a terrible war. These words are intended to fill the audience with fear, thus making

them want to vote for him. Similarly, an animal charity might show an audience pictures of injured dogs and cats to make thee viewers feel pity, so they will be more likely to donate money. Logos is the use of facts, statistics or other evidence to support your argument. An audience will believe you if you have convincing data to back up your claims. Presenting this evidence is much more persuasive than simply saying “believe me”.

Although ethos, pathos and logos all have their strengths, they are often most effective when used together. So, the next time you listen to a speech, watch a commercial or listen to a friend try to convince you to lend him some money, be on the lookout for these ancient Greek tools of persuasion.

(1)What is the purpose of persuasion?

A. To advise somebody to support you.

B. To help someone have special skills.

C. To convince somebody to realize his aim.

D. To talk someone into being honest.

(2)What is a speaker's way of convincing the audience to trust him?

A. Pathos.

B. Ethos.

C. Logos.

D. Education.

(3)What do a politician and an animal charity have in common?

A. Both prevent themselves from being hurt.

B. Both save people from terrible wars.

C. Both make the audience support them.

D. Both persuade people to donate money.

(4)Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. Convince the Audience

C. Believe Me

D. Strength of Persuasion

A 12-year-old with end stage cancer, the child's parents had recently moved her from the hospital to her home in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Some days later the girl's breath quickened, and her father phoned the family's hospice nurse. Please come, he said.

The nurse knew the visit would require more than four hours of her time: a two-hour drive in each direction, plus her time with the girl. Why don't we connect over FaceTime, she asked. The father agreed, and they connected.

The nurse asked the father to move his daughter gently to her side, then to her back, to lift the child's shirt. The nurse would ask: What do you see, what concerns you, and the father would explain. In this fashion the pair examined the girl --- the nurse on her computer, the father his iPad. Together they decided that the nurse's presence was not necessary, that the child had more time.

Later, the father reported feeling comforted by the nurse. He appreciated her availability, the fact that she could see what he saw, and their ability to discuss it in real time.

Telemedicine has become a trend in America. Some hospitals have gone so far as to specially design telemedicine clinics. The room is staged like an office but with better lighting. There's a nice desk for the clinician to sit behind, a computer situated stage left, and books in the background. A physician taking a video call from home might wear a pair of headphones, equipped with a mic --- to ensure whatever the patient says isn't broadcast to anyone off-camera. However, there is something more than the technology bit. According to David, the head of the telemedicine pilot the girl's family had been part of, there are some people who are great in person and you put them on camera they're a dead fish. “Some physicians are camera shy. For others, the physical is olation can actually help them be more empathetic.” He adds.

“My experience is that, once you get past some initial hurdles, you can maintain an intimate, immediate connection with patients that in some cases may be more useful than even in-person inte ractions,” David says.

(1)Why did the nurse suggesting connecting via FaceTime?

A. Because she was not allowed to leave her clinic.

B. Because she had to take care of other patients in the clinic.

C. Because it took too much time on her way to patient's home.

D. Because the father didn't pay for her fare of transportation.

(2)How did the father think of the telemedicine service?

A. He doubted the quality of the service.

B. He thought highly of the service.

C. He insisted the service be improved.

D. He challenged the authority of the nurse.

(3)What do we know about the rooms for telemedicine?

A. Better air conditioners are provided for a comfortable environment.

B. Mics are equipped to protect privacy of patients.

C. Professional books are in place for immediate consultation.

D. The room with a computer is situated in the doctor's home.

(4)What challenges may clinicians face in telemedicine?

A. They are afraid of being isolated from patients.

B. They could not examine the patients carefully.

C. They are required to deal with in-person interactions.

D. They may not feel quite themselves in front of a camera.

Weighing too much can damage your health, and obesity is a growing problem for both kids and adults around the world. Sleep might be one answer to the problem. A new study has found that elementary school students who slept too little were more likely to gain pounds.

Past studies have shown a link between sleeping less and weighing more, but scientists have had a tough time determining "which came first, the chicken or the egg," says Julie C. Lumeng of the university of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In other words, it hasn't been clear whether kids who weigh too much have trouble sleeping, or whether sleeping less leads to weight gain. Both scenarios (可能出现的情况) seemed equally possible.

To get a better idea of which causes which, Lumeng and her colleagues interviewed the parents of 785 third graders from around the United States. The parents answered questions about how well their kids slept that year. Three years later, the parents answered the same questions. By sixth grade, 18percent of kids involved in the study were obese.

The scientists found no relationship between weight and the students' race or gender. It also didn't matter how strict their parents were, or whether they were boys or girls. Obesity struck all of these groups equally. Instead, sleep seemed to be the key factor. Over the three years of study, the children averaged a healthy 9. 5 hours of sleep a night. Some kids, however, slept a lot more or less than others.

For the sixth graders, every hour of sleep above the 9. 5houraverage was linked to a 20 percent lower risk of being obese. Sleep appeared doubly important for the third graders. Every extra hour of sleep they got was linked to a 40 percent drop in obesity.

B. The more a child sleeps, the healthier

he will be.

C. Sixth graders need much more sleep than third graders.

D. One's race or gender has nothing to do with his weight.

(3)How does the author develop the passage?

A. By listing figures

Since 2013, Torobo, a robotic arm designed to test the limits of artificial intelligence, has had one ambition—to be admitted to the University of Tokyo. However, it has repeatedly failed. This year was no exception.

In early November Torobo took an exam to prepare for an all-important standardized test. While Torobo's total score of 525 out of 950 was 14 points higher than in 2015,its standard score of 57.1% was slightly lower, because human students did better in the 2016 test.

Though the score, which is higher than the national average, is enough to get the robot admitted to many other famous Japanese universities,

it falls short of the minimum required for the University of Tokyo.

A closer analysis of the results showed that Torobo's newly programmed ability to solve complex physics problems helped increase its

year-over-year physics score from 46. 5% to 59%. The robot also dug deep into its database of information from textbooks and websites to obtain

an impressive 66.3% in world history. The average 60% scores acquired in the two math sections, were not too shabby either.

But,while Torobo is able to handle knowledge-based questions and ones involving complex mathematical calculations, it has a hard time thinking independently. As a result, the robot is unable to fully understand multiple sentences and phrases to arrive at the logical conclusions required in the English language tests. This weakness was reflected in the weak oral and writing scores, which came in at 36.2% and 50.5%, respectively.

Fortunately, after four tiring years, the robot's creators have decided to free Torobo from its annual test-taking suffering, the research team will instead focus on improving the robot's ability to pick out specific answers from massive sets of data—a skill that led to its excellent history scores. They believe the expertise(专业技术)will help Torobo succeed as an industrial robot. (1)What is the disadvantage of Torobo?

A. It has much difficulty searching for facts.

B. It doesn't own language skills.

C. It has weak independent thinking ability.

D. It couldn't get through the exams.

(2)What does the underlined word “it” in the third p aragraph refer to?

A. the score

B. Torobo

C. the University of Tokyo

D. the national average (3)What did the exam results show?

A. Torobo's score didn't reach the national average.

B. Torobo's programmed ability improved its math score.

C. Torobo was admitted to a university.

D. Torobo did well in the history exam.

(4)What is the text mainly about?

Paying a higher price than usual for a ticket to see a film in 3D is the annoyance of many a cinema-goer's life.

But there may be a benefit to doing so, as a study has found that 3D films exercise the brain and improve short-term functioning in a similar way to brain-training tests.

The research found that people who watched a movie in 3D improved cognitive (认知) skills, compared to those who watched it in 2D.

The research was led by neuroscientist(神经学家) Dr Patrick Fagan from Goldsmiths University in London. More than 100 people took part in the experiment, where participants watched Disney film Big Hero 6 in either standard format or RealD 3D.

They also carried out a brain-training-style test before and after seeing a section from the film. The test covered memory, reaction times and cognitive function and the results were compared later.

According to the research, which was carried out in partnership with science group Thrill Laboratory, participants experienced a 23 percent increase in cognitive processing, as well as an 11 percent increase in reaction times.

Dr Fagan said that the results showed enough of an improvement in brain function to suggest that 3D could play a part in improving brain power in the future.

"These findings are more significant than you might think," he said. "It is a fact that people are living longer and there is a noticeable decline in cognitive brain function in old age which can worsen future quality of life. There has never been a better time to look at ways to improve brain function. The initial results of this study show that 3D films may potentially play a role in slowing this decline."

A second part of the experiment involved those watching the film being fitted with headsets that scanned brain activity and this too showed heightened (加强的) activity when watching 3D. According to the results, participants were seven percent more engaged with what they were watching, adding to argument that 3D movies are more like watching real-life—something Professor Brendan Walker from Thrill Laboratory agreed with.

"As Professor Brendan Walker's test concluded, 3D films are more attractive and heighten the senses — this, in turn, makes the brain run at quicker speeds," Dr Fagan said.

(1)According to the research, people watching a movie in 3D ________.

A. have a good exercise for their brain

B. lose their short memory of its plots

C. are willing to pay a high price for tickets

D. react the same way as those watching it in 2D (2)What can be learned from the research?

A. Watching 2D films limits brain function.

B. 3D would be a contributing factor in improving brain power.

C. The test was carried out after the whole film was viewed.

D. The participants took the brain-training-style test once.

(3)Paragraph 8 is mainly about ________.

A. the application of 3D

B. the disadvantages of 2D films

C. the change in brain function

D. the significance of the study

(4)The text is most likely to appear in ________.

Growing Pains The term "adulting started as a sort of joke 一一whenever a millennial(千禧一代)would do something age-appropriate, this was an act of "adulting." Now, though, millennials obviously require training in being an adult. Rachel Flehinger has co-founded an Adulting School, which includes online courses on simple sewing, conflict resolution and cooking. The cause for such classes is that many millennials "haven’t left childhood homes" 一一in America 34 percent of adults aged 18 to 34 still lived with their parents as of 2015, up from 26 percent a decade before. There's a good deal of truth to this. If you're living at home, with Mom and Dad doing their best to spoil((溺爱)you, you're less likely to know how to do laundry, cook or balance a checkbook. Dependency breeds enervation. But here's the catch: Living at home doesn't necessarily lead to dependency. As of 1940, more than 30 percent of 25- to 29-year-olds lived at home with parents or grandparents. They were adulting, even while living at home. Parents expected their kids to do chores, to prepare for life. Instead of blaming living at home, then, we have to blame our style of parenting. The truth is that we've simply become lazier as parents. So what's the real problem? We're more likely to let our kids crash on our couches(长沙发)than tell them to get a job and pay rent. We don't push our kids to build families of their own, as life expectancy has increased, so has adolescence. Americans aren't expected to start building a life, particularly middle- and upper-class Americans, until they're nearing their 30s. Then the question is how we can encourage young people to "'adult" in non-circumstance-driven fashion. 9. What does the last sentence in the third paragraph "Dependency breeds enervation." mean? A. Parents would like to do housework by themselves B. Present kids are too lazy to do housework. C. Dependency makes kids unable. D. Kids depend on their parents. 10. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Millennials would like to be trained in being an adult. B. Parents are too lazy to do chores. C. Millennials don't adult because they still live in their childhood homes. D. In the 1940s kids were adulting even when they were living at home. 11. Which of the following statements is the main idea of the passage? A. "Adulting" is hard, but only because parents are too lazy to teach their kids.

Everywhere we look, we are surrounded by technology. We heavily rely on technology for our day-to-day lives. There are the social media apps, such as Facebook, Twitter, where we are able to see into the lives of everyone around us. There are other more useful apps like Google Maps where you can use a GPS to get from one place to another. It is no wonder that we are constantly looking down at our phones and other devices. And, that is a problem. Pretty soon, I fear that people will no longer be able to communicate face to face. I personally love being able to sit down and have a conversation with someone sans cell phones and distractions. It shows that you care about who you are talking to and want to involve and listen to them. The cell phone can wait until later. What I really dislike is that younger and younger children are using technology. Instead of playing outside with friends, they are playing on iPads, iPods, or video games. Instead of having little games or books, children now have electronic devices to use to distract them even if waiting at doctors' appointments etc. They want cell phones at young ages. They have texting. I overheard sixth graders one day talking about texting, and I was a little sad. At that age, I had to call my friends on the phone in order to talk to them. We are a society based on technology. And, that isn't a completely bad thing, given its use in areas such as medicine. But we shouldn't be addicted to so many of these devices that we forget to look around and see what is happening in the world around us. (1)What can be concluded from the first paragraph? A.Some tech products leave us unable to focus. B.Social media apps make people more visible. C.Many people usually misuse social media apps. D.Technology provides us with a convenient life. (2)Which can best replace the underlined word "sans"? A.is need of B.without C.is spite of D.with (3)What's the author's attitude towards using technology in medicine? A.Indifferent. B.Opposed. C.Concerned. D.Supportive. (4)What does the author really want to show in the passage? A.We should take a step back from constantly using technology. B.The electronic devices are closely connected with our life. C.Society should no longer be based on technology. D.We should say goodbye to electronic devices.

Two of the saddest words in the English language are "if only". I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My father is famous in our family for saying, "Take the extra minute to do it right." I always try to live by the "extra minute" rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an "if only" moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table. I don't only avoid those "if only" moments when it comes to safety. It's equally important to avoid "if only" in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say "I love you" or "I forgive you." When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn't be here. But then I thought about the fact that he's 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn't give up an opportunity to see him. Many scientists today are convinced that life exists elsewhere in the universe---life probably much like that on our own planet. They reason in the following way. As far as astronomers can determine, the entire universe is built of the same matter. They have no reason to doubt that matter obeys the same laws in every part of the universe. Therefore, it is reasonable to guess that other stars, with their own planets, were born in the same way as our own solar system. What we know of life on earth suggests that life will arise wherever the proper conditions exist. Life requires the right amount and kind of atmosphere. This eliminates(除去) all those planets in the universe that are not about the same size and weight as the earth. A smaller planet would lose its atmosphere; a larger one would hold too much of it. Life also requires a steady supply of heat and light. This eliminates double stars, or stars that flare up suddenly. Only single stars that are steady sources of heat and light like our sun would qualify. Finally, life could evolve(进化) only if the planet is just the right distance from its sun. With a weaker sun than our own, the planet would have to be closer to it. With a stronger sun, it would have to be farther away. If we suppose that every star in the universe has a family of planets, then how many planets might support life? First, eliminate those stars that are not like our sun. Next eliminate most of their planets; they are either too far from or too close to their suns. Then eliminate all those planets which are not the same size and weight as the earth. Finally, remember that the proper conditions do not necessarily mean that life actually does exist on a planet. It may not have begun yet, or it may have already died out. This process of elimination seems to leave very few planets on which earthlike life might be found. However, even if life could exist on only one planet in a million, there are so many billions of planets that this would still leave a vast number on which life could exist. (1)The existence of life depends on all of the following factors EXCEPT . A.the right amount of atmosphere B.our own solar system C.steady heat and light D.the right distance from the sun (2)Which of the following statements is INCORRECT? A.The planet must be as big and heavy as the earth. B.Proper conditions are essential to the existence of life. C.Double stars can provide steady light and heat. D.The distance between a planet and its sun should be right. (3)What kind of planet might NOT support life? A.Most of the planets of the stars. B.Stars similar to our sun.
