【The spider】

In one way of thinking, failure is a part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The ―spider story‖ is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider spinning a web(蜘蛛织网). The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times without success. On the seventh time he made it and went on to spin his web. Bruce is said to have taken heart and to have gone on to defeat the English… Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one.

So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top from yourself? What can you change so things will go right next time?

Second, is the goal(目标)you're trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about his question, “If I do succeed in this, where will it get me?”This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn't be doing anyway.

The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it's a part of life. Learn to ―live with yourself‖ even though you may have failed. Remember, ―You can't win them all.‖

They are made from a variety of materials, such as wax and glass, so skillfully that they can scarcely be distinguished from natural flowers. In making such models, painstaking and artistry are called for, as well as thorough knowledge of plant structure. The collection of glass flowers in the Botanical Museum of Harvard University is the most famous in North America and is widely known throughout the scientific world. In all, there are several thousand models in colored glass, the work of two artist-naturalists, Leopold Blaschka and his son Rudolph? The intention was to have the collection represent at least one member of each flower family native to the United States. Although it was never completed. It contains more than seven hundred species representing 164 families of flowering plants, a group of fruits showing the effect of fungus diseases, and thousands of flower parts and magnified details. Every detail of these is accurately reproduced in color and structure. The models are kept in locked cases as they are too valuable and fragile for classroom use? 51. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. An Extensive Collection of Glass Flowers ? B. The Lives of Leopold and Rudolph?

专题高中年级英语阅读理解专项训练带答案(50篇)

高中阅读理解专项训练附答案解析 1篇 You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Even if you know some freshmen (新生) , you still feel nervous that you don't know any upperclassmen or teachers. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces? Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts, which is helpful not only because you can know your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but also because you get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognise a few familiar faces. When you talk to your new classmates, you'll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They're all new to the school and don't know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with them can help you develop friendships. The work in high school is something that freshmen are probably worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learnt in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it's a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help. High school also has more extracurricular activities than middle school does such as clubs, music and theatre groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things. High school gives you the chance to learn how to manage your time, to develop your social skills and interests, and more importantly to be more independent and responsible. 1.What does the underlined word “orientation” mean in Paragraph 2? A.Training. B.Game. C.Discussion. D.Examination. 2.What are freshmen probably worried about? A.The learning task. B.The ability to make friends. C.The relationship with teachers. D.The freshman orientation. 3.Extracurricular activities mainly help students ________. A.build up healthy bodies B.develop friendships C.develop the interests D.improve their learning ability 4.Who is this passage written for? A.Freshmen at high school. B.Freshmen's parents. C.Middle school students. D.Upperclassmen in high school.

【英语】高三英语阅读理解题20套(带答案)及解析

【英语】高三英语阅读理解题20套(带答案)及解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Many scientists today are convinced that life exists elsewhere in the universe---life probably much like that on our own planet. They reason in the following way. As far as astronomers can determine, the entire universe is built of the same matter. They have no reason to doubt that matter obeys the same laws in every part of the universe. Therefore, it is reasonable to guess that other stars, with their own planets, were born in the same way as our own solar system. What we know of life on earth suggests that life will arise wherever the proper conditions exist. Life requires the right amount and kind of atmosphere. This eliminates(除去) all those planets in the universe that are not about the same size and weight as the earth. A smaller planet would lose its atmosphere; a larger one would hold too much of it. Life also requires a steady supply of heat and light. This eliminates double stars, or stars that flare up suddenly. Only single stars that are steady sources of heat and light like our sun would qualify. Finally, life could evolve(进化) only if the planet is just the right distance from its sun. With a weaker sun than our own, the planet would have to be closer to it. With a stronger sun, it would have to be farther away. If we suppose that every star in the universe has a family of planets, then how many planets might support life? First, eliminate those stars that are not like our sun. Next eliminate most of their planets; they are either too far from or too close to their suns. Then eliminate all those planets which are not the same size and weight as the earth. Finally, remember that the proper conditions do not necessarily mean that life actually does exist on a planet. It may not have begun yet, or it may have already died out. This process of elimination seems to leave very few planets on which earthlike life might be found. However, even if life could exist on only one planet in a million, there are so many billions of planets that this would still leave a vast number on which life could exist. (1)The existence of life depends on all of the following factors EXCEPT . A.the right amount of atmosphere B.our own solar system C.steady heat and light D.the right distance from the sun (2)Which of the following statements is INCORRECT? A.The planet must be as big and heavy as the earth. B.Proper conditions are essential to the existence of life. C.Double stars can provide steady light and heat. D.The distance between a planet and its sun should be right. (3)What kind of planet might NOT support life? A.Most of the planets of the stars. B.Stars similar to our sun.

最新高考英语阅读理解训练经典题目(附答案) 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 "When someone is rude to you, it can put you in a bad mood. It may even lead you to be rude to someone else, creating a chain of rudeness. In fact, this troubling chain may even be caused by simply seeing someone be rude to another person. You don't even have to be the target of the had behavior," stated a researcher. The researchers worked with 81 persons, with occupations ranging from security to business to medicine, who were asked to complete online surveys over a 10-day period. Participants recorded their moods when they woke up; and in the evening, they described their experiences over the course of that day. Each morning the participants also viewed a short video, describing workplace interaction of some kind. Half of the mornings, the video included some kind of rudeness while the other half had some kind of warm interaction in the workplace. Rudeness was conveyed through various means, including a lack of eye contact or unpleasant language. Participants who watched the rudeness videos reported seeing or experiencing rudeness during the day, and they were also more likely to escape from fellow employees to avoid being the victims of rudeness themselves. They reported their overall work suffered that day as a result. Not all participants were affected by the rudeness videos, however. A few weeks before the study began, the participants completed an evaluation that measured their self-confidence and emotional stability among other things. The participants who scored higher on this evaluation were significantly less likely to be influenced by the rudeness. Consequently, one of the researchers recommended that companies hire managers who can limit exposure to rudeness, provide plenty of positive reinforcement (强化) and build a civil workplace environment. This, in turn, could help employees build their confidence levels and help them better handle workplace rudeness. (1)What is Paragraph 1 intended to show? A. The popularity of rudeness. B. A regular cause of rudeness. C. A new finding about rudeness. D. The common disadvantage of rudeness. (2)Why are the short videos played for the participants? A. To make them spread rudeness. B. To educate them on workplace interaction. C. To expose them to various aspects of rudeness. D. To teach them how to use right body languages. (3)What is the probable effect of watching the videos on some participants? A. Being unwilling to work. B. Poor ability to do their work. C. Serious emotional sufferings. D. Less interaction with others. (4)Who may not be affected by the rudeness videos? A.People positive and kind to themselves. B.People keeping calm in stressful situations.

(英语)高二英语阅读理解真题汇编(含答案) 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Sometimes we start a day with the previous day still in mind. We think about the mistakes we made in the previous day, how things went wrong, and how we felt bad about it. No wonder it becomes difficult to focus on the current day. Here are some steps on how to start your new day fresh: ⒈Take time to evaluate your day At the end of a day, take some time to think about it. The purpose of this thinking time is not to regret how bad your day was, how things went wrong, or how people treated you badly. This won't do you any good. Instead, the purpose of this thinking time is to extract(吸取)lessons which you can bring to the following day. ⒉Make a commitment to apply the lessons After you extract the lessons, you should make a commitment to apply them. To do so, find some actionable things you can do to apply the lessons. Next, remind yourself to do them. You may write them down if you want to. ⒊“Close” your day After you have spent the time to think about the day and extract the lessons, make a decision to “close” the day. You are done with it; don't think about it anymore. ⒋Bring only the lessons to the next day and nothing else After you “dose” a day, you should not bring anything ou t of it to the next day except for the lessons you extract. Focus on applying the lessons to the present. This way you will be able to start your day fresh without the burden of yesterday. (1)What will happen if we think too much about the past? A. There will be a disaster. B. There will be good results. C. We won't have a peaceful mind. D. We surely won't finish today's task. (2)When should we draw lessons from the past mistakes? A. The 90,031,000 families in the United States averaged 2.64 members each as of last July 1. ―The reason is, in effect, changes in the age structure,‖ explained Campbell Gibson, a population researcher for the bureau. Most Americans born in the great explosion of births after World War II are mow in their 20‘s and 20‘s when they are most likely to set up families, he said. The fact that many are doing so increased the number of families from 80.4million in 1980 to 88.8 million in 1986 and past the 90 million mark last summer . At the same time, the average number of people per family dropped from 2.75 in 1935 to 2.65 in 1986 and then to 2.64,Mr Gibson said. By comparison, the 1970 Census found the average family contained 3.15 people Families averaged more than four people in 1939 and more than five in 1880. The growing number of ever- smaller families is still going on, but Mr Gibson pointed out that family growth was mot the same as population increase in the 1970‘s. The same age factors (因素) that are increasing the number of families also happened then, but in the 1970‘s the

阅读理解专项练习一: Do dogs understand us? Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think. A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩. In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words. In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before. The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination(排除法. A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive. Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months.

阅读理解专项练习一: 1 When families gather for Christmas dinner, some will stick to formal traditions dating back to grandma's generation. Their tables will be set with the good dishes and silver, and the dress code will be Sunday best. But in many other homes, this china-and-silver elegance has given way to a stoneware (粗 陶) and stainless informality, with dresses assuming an equally casual-Friday look. For hosts and guests, the change means greater simplicity and comfort. For makers of fine china in Britain, it spells economic hard times. Last week Royal Doulton, the largest employer in Stoke-on-Trent, announced that it is eliminating 1,000 jobs -- one-fifth of its total workforce. That brings to more than 4, 000 the number of positions lost in 18 months in the pottery (陶瓷) region. Wedgwood and other pottery factories made cuts earlier. Although a strong pound and weak markets in Asia play a role in the downsizing, the layoffs in Stoke have their roots in earthshaking social shifts. A spokesman for Royal Doulton admitted that the company "has been somewhat slow in catching up with the trend" toward casual dining. Families eat together less often, he explained, and more people eat alone, either because they are single or they eat in front of television. Even dinner parties, if they happen at all, have gone casual. In a time of long work hours and demanding family schedules, busy hosts insist, rightly, that it's better to share a takeout pizza on paper plates in the family room than to wait for the perfect moment or a "real" dinner party. Too often, the perfect moment never comes. Iron a fine-patterned tablecloth? Forget it. Polish the silver? Who has time? Yet the loss of formality has its down side. The fine points of etiquette (礼节) that children might once have learned at the table by observation or instruction from parents and grandparents (" Chew with your mouth closed." "Keep your elbows off the table. ") must be picked up else- where. Some companies now offer etiquette seminars for employees who may be able professionally but inexperienced socially. 72. Why do people tend to follow the trend to casual dining? A. Family members need more time to relax. B. Busy schedules leave people no time for formality. C. People prefer to live a comfortable life. D. Young people won't follow the etiquette of the older generation. 73. It can be learned from the passage that 'Royal Doulton is . A. a seller of stainless steel tableware B. a dealer in stoneware C. a pottery chain store D. a producer of fine China 74. The main cause of the layoffs in the pottery industry is . A. the increased value of the pound B. the worsening economy in Asia C.the change in people's way of life D. the fierce competition at home and abroad 75. Formal table manners, though less popular than before in current Social life, . A.are still a must on certain occasions B. are certain to return sooner or later C. are still being taught by parents at home D. can help improve personal relationships
