To fight for the conservation of forest ecosystem, several ecologists including Daniel Janzen convinced Del Oro, an orange juice producer, to donate part of their forestland to a national park. In return, Del Oro was allowed to throw large amounts of waste in the form of orange peels (皮) on a 3-hectare piece of land within the national park at no cost. Dealing with tons of leftover peels usually involved burning them or paying to have them poured into a landfill, so the proposal was very attractive.

But a year later, another juice company challenged the deal in court, arguing that their competitor was “polluting a national park”. They ended up winning, and the deal between Del Oro and the national park fell through.

Then in 2013, while discussing possible research avenues with Timothy Treuer, Daniel Janzen mentioned the orange story. Feeling interested, Treuer decided to stop by that piece of land that had been covered with fruit waste 15 years earlier. What he found shocked him.

“While I would walk over exposed rock and dead grass in the nearby fields, I'd have to climb through undergrowth and cut paths through walls of vines (藤) in the orange peel site itself.” said Timothy Treuer.

Treuer and his team spent months picking up samples (样品), analyzing and comparing them. They found great differences between the areas covered with orange peels and those that were not. The area with orange waste had richer soil.

The effect that the orange peels had on the land is probably not that surprising to people familiar with composting (施肥), but what is really shocking is that a judge actually thought the waste of orange “mined” a national park and stopped it from going forward. Now that Timothy Treuer's study has received worldwide a ttention, this type of “ruining” is being seriously considered as a way of bringing forests back to life.

(1)What did Del Oro usually do with orange peels?

A. Add them to fuel.

B. Throw them into a national park.

C. Bum or bury them.

D. Make them into cakes.

(2)What can we know about the deal between Del Oro and the national park?

A. It lasted 15 years.

B. It was signed by Treuer.

C. It was made in about 1998.

D. It was broken by Del Oro.

(3)What was Treuer's finding?

A. Orange peels contain much fibre.

B. Orange peels can make soil richer.

C. Orange peels rot away in a short time.

D. Orange waste ruined the national park.

(4)What is the author's attitude toward the judge mentioned in the last paragraph? A. Disapproving. B. Positive. C. Worried. D. Admirable.

【答案】(1)C

(2)C

(3)B

(4)A

The past ages of man have all been carefully labeled by anthropologists Descriptions like "Palaeolithic (旧石器时代的) Man". "Neolithic (新石器时代的) Man",etc. neatly sum up whole periods. When the time comes for anthropologists to turn their attention to the twentieth century, they will surely choose the label "Legless Man". Histories of the time will go something like this: "in the twentieth century, people forgot how to use their legs. Men and women moved about in cars, buses and trains from a very early age. There were lifts in all large buildings to prevent people from walking. And the surprising thing is that they didn't use their legs even when they went on holiday."

The future history books might also record that we were deprived (剥夺) of the use of our eyes. In our hurry to get from one place to another, we failed to see anything on the way. Air travel gives you a bird's-eye view of the world. When you travel by car or train, an unclear picture of the countryside constantly smears the windows. Car drivers, especially, are mixed with the urge to go

on and on: they never want to stop. The typical twentieth-century traveler is the man who always says "I've been there." You mention the remotest, and someone is bound to say "I've been there"-meaning, "I drove through it at100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else."

When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is meaningless. You want to move on again. By traveling like this, you suspend all experience. The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives constantly in the present. For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical tiredness. He knows that sound, satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travelers.

(1)Anthropologists label man nowadays "Legless Man" because _____.

A. people prefer cars, buses and trains

B. people use their legs less and less

C. lifts prevent people from walking

D. people travel without using legs

(2)According to the passage, what might make people lose the right of using their eyes?

A. the modern means of transportation.

B. A bird's-eye view of the world.

C. The unclear sight from the vehicles.

D. The fast-paced life style.

(3)From the passage, we know traveling at high speeds means _______.

A. appreciating beautiful scenery

B. experiencing life skills

C. focusing on the next destination

D. feeling physical tiredness

(4)What does the author intend to tell us?

A. Modern transportation devices have replaced legs.

B. Traveling makes the world a small place.

C. Human's history develops very fast.

D. The best way to travel is on foot.

【答案】(1)B

(2)D

(3)C

(4)D

根据第一段中的“When the time comes for anthropologists to turn their attention to the twentieth century, they will surely choose the label‘Legless Man’. Histories of the time will go something like this:"in the twentieth century, people forgot how to use their legs. Men and women moved about in cars, buses and trains from a very early age. There were lifts in all large buildings to prevent people from walking. And the surprising thing is that they didn't use their legs even when they went on holiday."可知,人类学家给人类贴上了“无腿人”的标签,因为人们使用腿越来越少了。故选B。

(2)考查推理判断。根据第二段中的“The future history books might also record that we were deprived (剥夺) of the use of our eyes. In our hurry to get from one place to another, we

failed to see anything on the way. Air travel gives you a bird's-eye view of the world.”

根据第三段中的“When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place.” 根据最后一段中的“The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives constantly in the present. For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical tiredness. He knows that sound, satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travelers.”

Automatic dishwashers have been around for more than 100 years. It started in 1886 with Josephine Cochrane, a woman in Shelbyville, Illinois. She was a rich woman who could afford servants to wash her dishes, so she really didn't mind the work. What she did mind was that her servants broke the dishes. She hosted quite a few dinner parties, and after every party the servants broke more of her expensive dishes.

Finally, Cochrane took action. First, she measured her dishes and bent wire into racks to hold them. Next, she put the racks on a wheel in a large copper boiler. Then, the boiler sprayed hot, soapy water on the dishes as a motor turned the wheel. After a hot water rinse(冲洗), the dishes were clean!

Josephine Cochrane's friends were impressed with the machine and asked her to build more. After that, word got out fast. Soon hotel and restaurant owners who didn't like broken dishes also were interested. Cochrane then knew that she had a wonderful machine, so she received a patent from the government, which said that only the inventor can make money from an invention. Then in 1893 Chicago held a World's Fair where inventions from all over the world were shown. Cochrane's labor-saving machine was a big hit. Her dishwasher won the highest award.

Cochrane's company came out with a smaller machine in 1914. It was supposed to be for the ordinary home, but it wasn't an immediate success. Many homes couldn't produce the extremely hot water it needed. Also, in most homes, dishwashing wasn't considered very difficult compared to most other housework. In fact some people liked to relax at the sink after a hard day! Sales of the home model finally picked up in the 1950s when people had more money and wanted to have more time to enjoy themselves. Now many homes have electric dishwashers that aren't very different from the one Josephine Cochrane invented more than 100 years ago.

(1)Why did Josephine Cochrane invent the dishwasher?

A.To reduce the number of servants.

B.To avoid possible damage to the dishes.

C.To host more dinner parties.

D.To make the dishes cleaner.

(2)What does the underlined words in Paragraph 3 suggest?

A.The machine wasn't as efficient as described.

B.Josephine Cochrane could no longer keep it a secret.

C.Josephine's friends soon began to talk about the new machine.

D.The invention drew immediate attention of the public.

(3)The smaller machine became popular only when_____.

A.people's living conditions improved

B.hot water was not needed

C.housework became easier

D.people had more relaxing jobs

(4)Compared with Cochrane's invention, modern electric dishwashers _____.

A.cost less money

B.are quite different

C.wash many other things

D.are much the same

【答案】(1)B

(2)D

(3)A

(4)D

Have you ever experienced such an annoying thing as it took so long to open a web page? You're watching stops every few minutes, which ruined your internet experience. But it could be a thing of the past. On June 3, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced that China would issue licenses for the commercialization of 5G. It means major telecom carriers will start to provide 5G services.

The "G" in "5G" refers to the generation of mobile network technologies. 1G let us talk to each other, 2G let us send messages, 3G gave us mobile data and the internet, and 4G made all of these things faster.

Now 5G promises much faster data download and upload speeds, and more stable connections. This means that you will be able to download an entire HD movie in seconds and only experience a short delay between sending and receiving data. For example, when you have a video chant with your friend, there is generally a 100 to 200 milliseconds (毫秒) delay with 4G, but 5G will reduce the delay to 1 millisecond or less, which is almost real time.

With a 5G network, the short delay in information exchange will allow driverless cars to run more safely, as they will be able to communicate in real time and avoid potential dangers. Meanwhile, 5G enabled wearable devices will keep doctors constantly updated on the health status of their patients and warn them immediately if there's something wrong. Besides, VR games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make the games feel even more real.

Though 5G will make our lives more convenient, it will not be perfect. For one thing, 5G will not "travel" far. On 4 networks, you can be 10 kilometers away from the nearest transmission (传输) base and barely lose signal. But 5G will only cover about 300 meters, meaning we will need more transmitters so that we can get signals. And in order to use 5G, we will have to buy new specially, designed for 5G that are currently expensive.

(1)What is the function of the first paragraph?

A.To provide a background of the topic.

B.To offer basic knowledge of the topic.

C.To use an example to support the topic.

D.To draw readers' attention to the topic.

(2)According to the passage, what is likely to happen to our life with 5G?

A.Doctors can treat more patients.

B.No drivers are needed in the near future.

C.Many advanced technologies will be further improved.

D.Children will hate playing VR games in the real world.

(3)What can he found when 5G is compared with 4G?

A.4G cover smaller areas.

B.4G needs more transmitters.

C.5G signals can travel farther.

D.5G costs higher in early stage.

(4)What is the text mainly about?

A.The development of 5G.

B.Challenges that 5G will face.

C.Benefits that people will get from 5G.

D.The difference that 5G will make to our lives.

【答案】(1)D

(2)C

(3)D

(4)D

根据第一段中的“Have you ever experienced such an annoying th ing as it took so long to open a web page? You're watching stops every few minutes.”

根据第四段“With a 5G network, the short delay in information exchange will allow driverless cars to run more safely, as they will be able to communicate in real time and avoid potential dangers. Meanwhile, 5G enabled wearable devices will keep doctors constantly updated on the health status of their patients and warn them immediately if there's something wrong. Besides, VR games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make the games feel even more real.”

根据最后一段中的“ And in order to use 5G, we will have to buy new produc t specially designed for 5G that are currently expensive.”

While your pet fish may appear to be unaware of your presence, chances are that it knows you extremely well and can probably even identify you from a crowd of human faces!

To test if this was accurate, some scientists decided to study archerfish(喷水鱼). These

animals don't have a sophisticated(复杂的)brain that is necessary to recognize the slight differences between human facial features.

They began by presenting four archerfish with images of two human faces. Initially, the fish spit at both. However, they soon learned spitting water at the one selected by the researchers earned them a food treat. After that, they focused primarily on that image. The researchers then took the experiment one step further by introducing 44 other human faces to the mix.

To the researcher's astonishment, the trained archerfish were able to recall the learned image almost 81% of the time. And this accuracy improved to 86% when the researchers made the identification even harder, by replacing the colored photos with a set of black and white images and hiding the shape of the head.

The results of the study suggest that though having tiny brains, archerfish may have developed high visual discrimination abilities. While it is contrary to the previous theory that a sophisticated brain is necessary to recognize human faces, the researchers believe they do not recognize faces by recalling complex facial information like gender and identity, but more likely by discriminating between detailed patterns. Even so, the fact that these archerfish could “remember” those faces demonstrates that they have an impressive memory for details that lasts much longer than the originally-thought 3 seconds!

This is not the first time researchers have realized how “smart” fish are. Previous studies have shown that fish can recognize those fish they have “socialized” with previously, and even recall complex three-dimensional maps of their surroundings.

(1)What is the purpose of the study?

A. To describe archerfish are easy to teach.

B. To tell people archerfish like to be rewarded.

C. To prove archerfish can recognize human faces.

D. To show archerfish can easily develop a habit.

(2)Why did the researchers use black and white images?

A. They could get these images easily.

B. Archerfish got tired of color images.

C. They wanted to make the task more difficult.

D. These images wouldn't get ruined by water.

(3)What conclusion did researchers draw in the study?

A. Archerfish have a 3-second memory.

B. Archerfish could distinguish detailed patterns.

C. Archerfish have a special form of communication.

D. Archerfish could remember complex facial information.

(4)What can we infer from the text?

A. Fish are social animals.

B. Fish are as clever as humans.

C. Fish are able to tell different shapes.

D. The results shocked the researchers.

【答案】(1)C

(2)C

(3)B

(4)D

Here is a record of the discussion about AI (artificial intelligence) conducted by several scientists:

Scientist A: I would say that we are quite a long way off developing the AI, though I do think it will happen within the next thirty or forty years. We will probably remain in control of technology and it will help us solve many of the world's problems. However, no one really knows what will happen if machines become more intelligent than humans. They may help us, ignore us or destroy us. I tend to believe AI will have a positive influence on our future lives, but whether that is true will be partly up to us.

Scientist B: I have to admit that the potential consequences of creating something that can match or go beyond human intelligence frighten me. Even now, scientists are teaching computers how to learn on their own. At some point in the near future, their intelligence may well take off and develop at an ever-increasing speed. Human beings evolve biologically very slowly and we would be quickly substituted. In the short term, there is the danger that robots will take over millions of human jobs, creating a large underclass of unemployed people. This could mean large-scale poverty and social unrest. In the long term machines might decide the world would be better without humans.

Scientist C: I'm a member of the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots. Forget the movie image of a terrifying Terminator stamping on human skulls and think of what's happening right now: military machines like drones, gun turrets and sentry robots are already being used to kill with very little human input. The next step will be autonomous “murderbots” followin g orders but finally deciding who to kill on their own. It seems clear to me that this would be extremely dangerous for humans. We need to be very cautious indeed about what we ask machines to do.

(1)What is Scientist B worried about?

A. AI technology will destroy the earth.

B. Computers can't think by themselves.

C. Robots will take the place of humans.

D. Humans will be unhappy without machines.(2)What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?

A. I launched the campaign to Stop Killer Robots.

B. We forget the movie image of a terrifying Terminator.

C. “Murderbots” can't decide by themselves.

D. “Murderbots” will be against humans' orders.

(3)Which statement is CORRECT according to the record?

A. Scientist A thinks AI technology will never develop.

B. The employment will be affected by AI technology in the future.

C. “Murderbots” will follow the orders of their manufacturers in the wars.

D. All the three scientists agree that AI technology will benefit human beings.

(4)Who agree(s) AI has more negative aspects than positive aspects?

A. Scientist A

B. Scientist B

C. Scientists B & C

D. Scientists B & A

【答案】(1)C

(2)D

(3)B

Every year in America, high-school students who want to go to college take a national examination called the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT in a shortened way. Their score is an important factor in determining which colleges will admit them or whether any will be admitted at all. The Scholastic Aptitude Test measures one's mathematical ability and use of the English language. Traditionally, the English part involved grammatical questions and paragraphs that test reading comprehension.

But the SAT folks have added a single question, to be answered in an essay, hand-written on the spot. That's an interesting way to test writing ability, but content aside, have you ever seen young people's handwriting lately? Or anyone's for that matter, in this age of computer keyboards? Students write numbers and sign their names on bank checks. They scribble class notes in what can generously be described as the written word.

Yet today's kids are asked to write, thoughtfully and clearly, for several minutes on this SAT Test. Good luck to the text scorers who must work out difficultly the scrawl (潦草的字迹) of young people who've been typing on computers since the age of three! Teachers insist that good handwriting can not only help one's score on the SAT, but also, later on in life, impress potential employers. And don't forget, we all have to turn to handwriting from time to time, as computers go down when power goes out.

Then how to improve the handwriting? Well, with a few simple steps you can improve your hand writing.

Position the pen. You should hold the pen between the forefinger and the thumb, then rest it near the first knuckle (指节) of the middle finger. The rest of your fingers should be curled (卷曲) under your hand and your hand should remain relaxed.

Evaluate your writing. Make changes to your letters till you like how they look.

Take your time. Speed is bound to make your writing messy-looking.

Practice. Practice it a lot; it's not enough to do it once and hope for the best. It has to be something you work at to make great improvements.

Teachers insist that good handwriting can not only help one's score on the SAT, but also, later on in life, impress potential employers. Evaluate your writing;Take your time;Practice.

9.Directions: Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

A tiny clue found in ancient deposits has unlocked big secrets about Greenland's past and future climate. Just beyond the northwest edge of the vast Greenland Ice Sheet, researchers have discovered lake mud that have survived the last ice age. The mud, and remains of common flies in it, record two interglacial periods(间冰期)in northwest Greenland.

Although researchers have long known these two periods—the early Holocene and Last

Interglacial—experienced warming in the Arctic, the mix of fly species shows that Greenland was even warmer than previously thought. "As far as we know, it has never been found in Greenland. We think this is the first time anyone has reported it in ancient deposits or modern lakes there," Axford said. "We were really surprised to see how far north it migrated (迁徙)."

This new information could help researchers better measure Greenland's sensitivity to warming, by testing and improving models of climate and ice sheet behaviour. Those models could then improve predictions of how Greenland's ice sheet might respond to man-made global warming. After all, Greenland covers 80 per cent of the Arctic country and holds enough ice to equal 20 feet of global sea level. "Northwest Greenland might feel really remote, but what happens to that ice sheet is going to matter to everyone in every coastal city around the world," said Yarrow Axford, an associate professor in the team. "One of the big uncertainties in climate science is how fast the Earth changes when it gets warmer. Geology gives us an opportunity to see what happened when the Earth was warmer than today," said Axford.

People might be surprised to see how today's Greenland looked during the last two interglacial periods. During the Last Interglacial, global sea levels increased by 15 to 30 feet, largely due to thinning of Greenland and Antarctica's ice sheets. However, now researchers believe northern Greenland's ice sheet experienced stronger warming than previously thought, which could mean that Greenland is more responsible for that sea-level rise.

Finding lake deposits older than about 10,000 years, however, has been historically very difficult in Greenland. To measure these ancient temperatures, researchers look to ice cores (冰核) and lake deposits. Since ice and lake deposits form by a gradual buildup on annual layers of snow or mud, these cores contain history of the past. By looking through the layers, researchers can obtain climate clues from centuries ago.

(1)Why are the remains of flies mentioned in the first two paragraphs?

A.They serve as evidence that there is still life in the Northwest Greenland.

B.They were one of the many ancient lives that were left in the Greenland mud.

C.They are indicators that Greenland was much warmer than previously thought.

D.They help the researchers realize that there was once a warm period in the Arctic.

(2)The new information about Greenland is important because______________.

A.researchers have no idea how to measure Greenland's warming speed

B.it can help researchers better predict Greenland's response to warming

C.people should be more sensitive to the changes in the ice in Greenland

D.it is uncertain how fast the Earth changes with man-made global warming

(3)Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A.It is easier for today's scientists to find ancient lake deposits.

B.People are surprised at the landscape feature of Greenland today.

C.Researchers measure the changing temperatures by directly examining mud.

D.Greenland holds enough ice that might one day threaten life in coastal cities.

(4)Which do you think is the best title of the passage?

A.Greenland Used to Be Much Greener

B.Earth Once Experienced Warm Periods

C.Coastal Cities Warned of Coming Disasters

D.Northwest Greenland, A Perfect Destination

In 1953, a mountain climber reported seeing a bar-headed goose soar over the peak of Mount Everest It was thought impossible. Now researchers who raised 19 of the geese—named for the black stripes on the backs of their heads—have shown the birds really fly so high. The team trained the youngsters to fly in a large wind tunnel wearing backpacks and face

masks full of sensors that recorded their heart rate. blood oxygen levels, temperature, and metabolic rate—how many calories they burned per hour. The researchers simulated(模拟)10w-, medium-, and high-altitude conditions by altering the concentration of oxygen supplied to face masks worn by each goose as it flew in the tunnel.

Birds already have a better heart and lungs than mammals for sustained physical activity. And researchers knew that bar-headed geese have even larger, thinner lungs that let them breathe more deeply and an even bigger heart to pump more oxygen to muscles than other birds.

The wind tunnel experiments showed that when the concentration of oxygen was at its lowest-like the 7% found on top of Mount Everest versus 21% at sea level—the geese's heart rate and frequency of wing beats remained the same even as their metabolic rate dropped. Somehow, the birds managed to cool down their blood-the measured blood temperature dropped so it could take in more oxygen, the researchers report today in eLife. This cooling likely helps compensate for the very thin air, the team says.

Although well trained, the birds were only willing to stay in the air a few minutes-or less when wearing their backpacks and flying at 6ihigh" altitudes. So it's not clear whether these adaptations alone are what make it possible to fly the 8 hours it takes to climb over Mount Everest. But those few minutes showed these geese really could fly over the top of Mount Everest.(1)Why did the researchers raise 19 bar-headed geese and train them?

A. To test the flying height and speed of them.

B. To confirm they could fly over Mount Everest.

C. To observe them flying through the wind tunnel.

D. To see how many calories they burned per hour.

(2)What can we learn from the wind tunnel experiment?

A. It was carried out at very high altitude.

B. The geese managed to breathe less when their blood decreased.

C. The geese could live through the lowest concentration of oxygen.

D. It shows the geese could fly at high altitude for long.

(3)What still puzzles scientists about the geese?

A. Whether they have super hearts and lungs.

B. Whether they have muscles pumped more oxygen to.

C. Whether they are willing to wear backpacks and face masks.

D. Whether they can manage to fly 8 hours to climb over Mount Everest.

(4)Where does the text most probably come from?

A. A science fiction.

B. A climbing guide.

C. A travel brochure.

D. A science report.

In 1953, a mountain climber reported seeing a bar-headed goose soar over the peak of Mount Everest. It was thought impossible." Now researchers who raised 19 of the geese-named for the black stripes on the backs of their heads-have shown the birds really fly so high." So it's not clear whether these adaptations alone are what make it possible to fly the 8 hours it takes to climb over Mount Everest. But those few minutes showed these geese really could fly over the top of Mount Everest." The wind tunnel experiments showed that when the concentration of oxygen ...the geese's heart rate and frequency of wing beats remained the same even as their metabolic rate dropped....the researchers report today in elife. This cooling likely helps comp"可知风洞实验表明,当氧气浓度最低时,鹅的心率和翅膀搏动频率保持不变,即使它们的新陈代谢率下降。研究人员今天在《伊利费》杂志上报道说,...这种降温可能有助于补偿空气的稀薄;第五段中的"Although well trained, the birds were only willing to stay in the air a few minutes-or less ..."

So it's not clear whether these adaptations alone are what make it possible to fly the 8 hours it takes to climb over Mount Everest."

From the loss of wildlife to rising sea levels, we're all well aware of the problems that climate change could cause. But while it may seem like such issues won't affect most of us directly,it looks like future generations could grow up without something that many of us now take for granted: chocolate. According to an essay published by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, changes to the climate in the regions that produce cacao - the plant from which chocolate is produced - may mean that it will soon become extinct. Most of the world's cacao grows in countries close to the equator, with over half of it growing in the African nations of Ghana and Ivory Coast. It's predicted that by 2050, climate change will have accelerated the rate at which temperatures in these countries rise, making it extremely difficult for cacao to grow there. The problem doesn't lie in increased heat, however, but in lower humidity (湿度),as it's believed that rainfall will stay at the same level if the temperature rises. “In other words, as higher temperatures squeeze more water out of soil and plants, it's unlikely that rainfall will increase enough to offset the moisture (含水量) loss,” Michon Scott, the essay's author, wrote. To help fight this problem, researchers from Berkeley University in the US are working on changing the DNA of cacao plants to allow them to survive in dryer conditions by using gene editing technology, according to US News. In the meantime, US company Mars, one of the world's biggest manufacturers of chocolate products, announced in January that it would spend $1 billion to help reduce the effects of climate change. “This is a world issue, and it requires everyone to work together,” Mars spokesperson Barry Parkin told Business Insider. The message here is that if we all do our part, we may be able to prevent some of the worst impacts of climate change. Or if we're unlucky, chocolate will become a thing of the past. (1)What could make it hard for cacao to survive around the equator in the future? A. The increased heat there. B. The higher humidity there. C. The decrease in rainfall there. D. The moisture loss in the soil there. (2)What does the underlined word “offset” in the seventh paragraph mean? A. hold back B. make up for C. protect D. accept (3)What will US company Mars do to help cacao survive? A. It will work hard to plant cacao in greenhouses. B. It will apply gene editing technology in planting cacao. C. It will give financial support to help fight climate change. D. It will develop cacao that can survive in dryer conditions. (4)What may be the best title of this text?

Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges. Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese.Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音调). One of the study's authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “actually tunes our sensory system”.This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr.Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems. Mandarin speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码)of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do.This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role.A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned. For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years. As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi” in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds. The lead author of the study, Patrick C.M.Wong, said it might work both ways.It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments. 1.Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training? A.Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music. B.Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain. C.Because music training might help people with language study. D.Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music. 2.The underlined word “intoned” in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word “________”. A.created B.spelled C.seemed D.pronounced 3.What would be the best title for this passage? A.Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter Than English Speakers B.Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study C.Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning D.Schools Need to Develop Music Programs

On the last day of one voyage, the ship was in a small port. It was winter time, and the sea was very cold, so the captain said to his sailors, "If one of you stays in the water during the whole night, I will give him my ship. But if he comes out before the sun appears, I shall get his wages." The sailors had heard about the captain's cheating, so they didn't trust him. But then one of them, who thought that he was cleverer than the captain, said that he would do it. He got into the water, and, though it was very cold, he stayed in it. When it was nearly morning, some fishermen lit a fire on the shore about half a mile away. "You are cheating," the captain said to the sailor. "The fire's warming you." "But it's half a mile away!" said the sailor. "A fire's fire," answered the captain. "I have won." The sailor came out of the water, and said, "Perhaps you think that you are clever because you have won my wages, but you can't cook a chicken."

Money is the root of all evil (邪恶) and new study claims there may be some truth behind the saying. Scientists at the University of California Berkeley, US, announced on February 27 that rich people are more likely to do immoral things, such as lie or cheat, than poorer people. The scientists did a series of eight experiments. They published their findings online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNA《美国国家科学院院刊》). They carried out the first two experiments from the sidewalk near Berkeley. They noted that drivers of newer and more expensive cars were more likely to cut off other cars and pedestrians at crosswalks. Nearly 45 percent of people driving expensive ears ignored a pedestrian compared with only 30 percent of people driving mow modest cars. In another experiment, a group of college students was asked if they would do immoral things in various everyday situations. Examples included taking printer paper from work and not telling a salesperson when he or she gave back more change. Students from higher — class families were more likely to act dishonestly. According to the scientists, rich people often think money can get them out of trouble. This makes them less afraid to take risks. It also means they care less about other people's feelings. Finally, it just makes them greedier. “Higher wealth status seems to make you want even more, and that increased want leads you to bend the rules or break the rules to serve your self- i nterest,” said Paul Piff, lead scientist of the study. Piff pointed out that the findings don't mean that all rich people are untrustworthy or all poor people honest. He said the experiments were to show how people living in different social situations express their instincts(本能)and values in different ways. (1)By saying “money is the root of all evil”, the author wants to . A. link wealth with bad behavior B. draw readers' attention to the research C. show how the saying proves the findings D. defend rich people who do immoral things (2)According to the scientists, which is NOT the factor that makes rich people immoral? A. They welcome risks. B. They have more desires. C. They believe money talks. D. They become more selfish. (3)Why did the scientists do the experiments? A. To show how social status affects people's morality. B. To show people's instincts and values in different ways. C. To test whether the saying “money is the root of all evil” is true. D. To show the difference between higher - class people and lower - class people. (4)What does the passage really want to show us? A. The poor are respectable. B. Money is the root of all evil. C. All rich people are untrustworthy. D. The rich are more likely to act badly. 【答案】(1)B (2)A

On a recent trip to the island of Newfoundland, Canada, my husband asked our talkative cab driver what made him most proud to be from there. "Our generosity and hospitality (好客)," he replied in a strong local accent. "Your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, someone will stop to help. People here are kind like that." His answer lingered in my mind during that ride with my husband and teenage kids, as we headed out to explore on the first day of our vacation. Little did I know we were about to experience some of that remarkable Newfoundland kindness for ourselves. We met Alma that same morning at the start of a long hike. Our teenagers hurried ahead, and as we walked behind, admiring the scenery, two women in sunglasses and summer hiking gear stopped. They'd heard us discussing different routes, then asked if we'd like suggestions. They looked to be in their 40s, and were both enthusiastic to share their local expertise. We listened eagerly, taking mental notes, until one of the women asked, "You have a car, right?" I explained that there were no cars available during our week on the island, so we had to rely on cabs instead. "Oh no," she said, "you need a car." And then, as casually as if offering a piece of chewing gum (口香糖), she said: "Take mine!" Dumbfounded, my husband and I just smiled in disbelief. "Why not?" She insisted. "You need a car to get to know all these places." "But you don't even know us," I said. "That doesn't matter," she continued with absolute determination. Stunned, I looked over at her friend, who shrugged and said, "That's Alma." Forty minutes of talking later, my family climbed into Alma's car. We spent the rest of our vacation discovering different areas of this beautiful island. But it wasn't the groups of whales we saw, or the vast areas of woodland, that made this place so memorable. Instead, it was the act of kindness from a complete stranger that made us realize how special Newfoundland really was. Next year, there's no doubt where we'll be taking our summer vacation. Who knows what act of kindness we'll meet then? (1)What problem did the author's family have in Newfoundland? A.They couldn't understand the local accent. B.Their car broke down on the first day.
