Learning a new language is a long and difficult process. This process can become easier if you set goals. Goals help guide language learners and give them reasons to continue studying a language. However, if your goals are too difficult, then you will probably become upset.

Many English learners set difficult and even unreasonable goals, such as sounding like a native speaker, or losing their accents. The problem with the goal of sounding like a native speaker is that it is not a reasonable goal for many people.

When English learners begin studying English after a certain age, they are not able to sound

exactly like a native English speaker. That is the opinion of Eli Hinkel, a professor at Seattle Pacific University. She says that people who have not reached puberty still have enough muscle and brain plasticity (可塑性) to allow their brain to control their mouth muscles. Puberty is the period of life when a child becomes an adult. After your physical growth has stopped, the brain loses some of its ability to change the way it controls the muscles of the mouth. This is what results in an accent, according to Hinkel. In other words, having an accent is a natural part of the aging process of the brain.

That you might not sound like a native speaker does not mean that you should give up trying to improve your pronunciation. And that you have an accent does not mean that your language skills are poor. Hinkel suggests that English learners should not be too upset about their accents. Another teacher says sounding like a native speaker is not necessary. Marla Yoshida is a teaching English as a foreign language teacher at the University of California, Irvine. She says that improving your pronunciation is surely possible — if you choose a reasonable goal. Marla Yoshida says that when you decide to diet, you are more likely to have success if you set reasonable goals. She suggests working on specific areas of pronunciation that you can improve, instead of trying to sound like a native speaker.

1.What does the underlined part “unreasonable goals” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to? A.Goals that are meaningless.

B.Goals that are very small.

C.Goals that are based on facts.

D.Goals that are impossible to reach.

2.According to Paragraph 3, why are English learners unable to sound like a native speaker? A.They have no native speakers to talk to.

B.They don’t have enough time to practice.

C.Their brain can’t control their mouth muscles.

D.Their mother tongue prevents them from doing so.

3.Which of the following statements would Eli Hinkel probably agree with?

A.Having an accent is acceptable.

B.Improving pronunciation isn’t that important.

C.Sounding like a native speaker is impossible.

D.Poor pronunciation means poor language skills.

【答案】

1.D

2.C

3.A

2.

细节理解题。根据第三段的“After your physical growth has stopped, the brain loses some of its ability to change the way it controls the muscles of the mouth.(当你的身体发育停止后,大脑就失去了一些改变控制口腔肌肉方式的能力)”可知,英语学习者无法像母语人士一样发音,因为他们的大脑已经控制不了口腔里的肌肉了。故选C。

“Every weekend I take photos of people on the happiest days of their lives, and today one man who has seen some of the worst things our world has to offer came to help,”said Lindsay Coulter, who posted photos and wrote on her Facebook page.

The Boy Made It!

One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute. Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.

He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed out. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.

Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could. By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could—he huddled(蜷缩) in his cave and slept.

The next day, Nicholas went out to lo ok for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.

Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls’ survival show. Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode(一期节目)of Man vs. Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out. When Grylls heard about Nicholas’ amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive. 1.What happened to Nicholas one Sunday afternoon?

A.He got lost.

B.He broke his skis.

C.He hurt his eyes

D.He caught a cold

2.How did Nicholas keep himself warm?

A.He found a shelter.

Very old people do raise moral problems for almost everyone who comes in contact with them. Their values —this can’t be repeated too often — are not necessarily our values. Physical comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important things. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with decaying food covered by small worms, and an old person lying alone in bed, taking no notice of the worms. But is it interfering (干涉) with personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of. Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in danger of carrying this concept of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old.

Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car, it needs more mechanical maintenance (机械维修,保养) as it gets older. You can carry this comparison right through to the provision of spare parts. But never forget that such operations are painful experiences, however good the results will be. And at what point should you stop to treat the old body? Is it morally right to try to push off death by seeking the development of drugs to excite the forgetful old mind and to activate the old body, knowing that it is designed to die? You can't ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long as they can see the technical opportunities, they will feel

bound to give them a try, on the principle that while there’s life, there’s hope.

When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun. 1.What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.The values are different between the old and the young.

B.The moral problems raised by old people.

C.The personal freedom for the old.

D.Old people’s viewpoint on life.

2.We can know from the first paragraph that ________.

A.very old people would like to live alone to have more personal freedom

B.very old people are able to keep their room clean

C.very old people like to live with their children

D.social services have nothing to do with very old people

3.According to the author, which of the following is right?

A.The older a person, the more care he needs.

B.Too much emphasis has been put on old people’s values.

C.The huma n body can’t be compared to a car.

D.It is easy to provide spare parts for old people.

4.The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to “________”.

A.their money or their health

B.the conclusion you come to

C.your talk to the old people

D.whether age is happy or unpleasant

【答案】

1.B

2.A

3.A

4.D

【分析】

1.主旨大意题。根据文章第一句Very old people do raise moral problems for almost everyone who comes in contact with them.(老年人确实会给几乎所有与他们接触的人带来道德问题)及全文内容主要围绕老年人引起的道德问题。故选B。

2.推理判断题。根据文章第一段中But is it interfering with personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of? Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in danger of carrying this concept of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety

of the old.(但是,坚持让他们和亲戚住在一起,以便得到更好的照顾,这是否妨碍了个人自由?一些社会工作者,那些清理蠕虫的人,认为我们正处于把个人自由的概念带到一个严重威胁老年人健康和安全的地步的危险之中。)可知,许多老年人喜欢独自生活以获得更多的个人自由。故选A。

3.推理判断题。根据文章第二段第2句The body is like a car, it needs more mechanical maintenance as it gets older.(身体就像一辆汽车,随着年龄的增长,它需要更多的机械保养。)可推知,一个人越老,他需要的关心就越多。故选A。

4.词义猜测题。根据文章最后一段When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun.(然而,当你与老年人交谈时,你不得不得出这样的结论:老去是快乐还是不快乐,与其说取决于金钱或健康,不如说是取决于你的娱乐能力。)可知,老去是快乐还是不快乐是取决于你的娱乐能力。故it指代上文whether age is happy or unpleasant。故选D。

Sport is not only physically challenging, but can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create too much anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.

The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents and coaches’ criticisms to heart and find faults in themselves.

Coaches and parents should also pay attention that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find faults with youngsters’ performances. Positive support should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive support motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.

1.An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is_____________.

A.to make sport less competitive

B.to increase their sense of success

C.to reduce their mental stress

D.to make sport more challenging

2.According to the passage, sport is positive for young people in that_____________.

A.it can help them learn more about society

B.it enables them to find faults in themselves

C.it can provide them with valuable experiences

D.it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves

3.Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes_____________. A.believing that criticism does good to their early development

B.without realizing criticism may destroy their self-confidence

C.in order to make them remember life’s lessons

D.so as to put more pressure on them

4.According to the passage parents and coaches should_____________.

A.pay more attention to letting children enjoy sport

B.help children to win every game

C.train children to cope with stress

D.enable children to understand the positive aspect of sport

【答案】

1.C

2.C

3.B

4.A

2.细节理解题。由第二段中的The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place.体育活动能为年轻人提供极其有价值的一生都有用的人生经历。可知选C。

3.细节理解题。由最后一段中的Following a game many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find faults with youngsters’ performances. 以及Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.可得出结论,父母和教练只顾结果而对青少年吹毛求疵,这无疑增加了他们的压力,破坏了他们的自信心,故B项正确。

4.推理判断题。由最后一段可总结出父母和教练应该变批评为鼓励,以减轻孩子们的心理压力,使他们拥有积极的动机,从而更喜欢体育运动。所以A项正确。

My two daughters and I got into the car to spend our weekend in Florida. Autumn, the elder one, offered to drive. I sat next to her, and Amber sat in back. After setting off, the three of us sang to the radio at the top of our voice.

It was a great trip until the rain poured and the rain was too heavy. “I have to pull over, ” Autumn said. She tried to enter the far right lane (车道) to find a place to stop, but trucks ran fast, making water onto our car. The car was out of control, then worse — it started to move left and right. Autumn fought to control it but it was too late. We ran into a truck. The girls jumped out of the car. My chest felt much pain.

“Get out, Mom. Come on!” Amber cried. “I can't,” I said. Autumn took out her cellphone, “There's been an accident. Send an ambulance (救护车)!” Amber and Autumn pulled me out of the car and helped me lie on my back in the grassy area by the roadside. I had to calm myself and looked up. A man held a large umbrella over me and other kind faces appeared above me. A woman helped to treat a cut over Amber's eye. Another woman came close to me and said, “No one in the truck was injured. Help was on the way.” The woman mentioned she was a nurse; the other woman who took care of Amber's cut was an eye specialist. We couldn't have asked for better care.

In the hospital the pain in my chest began to disappear. Later, the tests at the hospital made sure we had no serious injuries. We'd left all our troubles behind thanks to these kind people, who seemed to be angels (天使) in my eyes.

Along the hallway (走廊), I saw mixed expressions on the faces of my students: excited, nervous, and worried. No doubt about it: they were this term’s freshmen. My own first day at high school flashed into my mind.

Since our family had just moved to the place, I didn’t know anyone at the school. On arriving, I

picked up a map and my schedule (日程表). Oh, my goodness, what a large school it was! Nervously, I looked about for where my first class was to be held.

When I finally found my class, everyone was talking and laughing together, and I felt so lonely. Throughout the day, each period brought some new faces I had not seen before. But when my English class came around, I had a surprise: an old classmate! It was Ben, who had left my middle school right after sixth grade. We talked and joked about middle school and the clubs we were in together. My nerves eased (放松) a little.

Next was the P E. class. This was the first class that I found without difficulty. Sitting through the boring introduction to the class by the teacher, I started talking to a girl sitting near me. I found out that her family had just moved here too, and she didn’t know anyone either. As we talked, we discovered that we had a lot in common, and had a lot of classes together. This girl ended up becoming my best friend. I am so glad that I met her.

By the end of that day, I was full of optimism (乐观). I knew that high school would be an amazing experience.

As the novel coronavirus epidemic continues, one school after another has organized online classes. The most common form is live streaming, in which all participants, teacher and students alike, sit in front of a computer camera and see each other via the platform.

Many teachers and students simply wear casual clothing for the class, and jokes emerge about each othe r’s appearance. After all, most of the time it is the teacher appearing on screen, and the students, even if called on by the teacher, will only show their faces.

Yet Shijiazhuang No.1 Middle School in Hebei province recently triggered heated discussion by requiring teachers to wear formal suits and students to wear uniforms while attending online classes.

By Saturday morning, the related topic has become one of the hottest topics on Sina Weibo, with 180 million views.

“The practice can improve students’ se nse of formality in the online classes and make them more attentive, said Yao Haibo,” a head teacher of the school in a video clip. “It can also grant students a sense of honor and make them remember their identities as students.”

However, in the comment sections, some micro bloggers claiming to be students disagreed.“Not useful. Whether one works hard or not is not decided by a uniform,” was the most highly voted comment, with 31,000 “likes”.

“Maybe a good move, but unnecessary,” was another highly voted comment.

Whatever the argument is, the problem might be solved in the not — so — distant future. According to official data, the number of newly confirmed diagnosed cases was 397 on Saturday. The students and teachers might, hopefully, see each other in classrooms soon.

本文是一篇新闻报道。讲的是在新冠肺炎疫情肆虐的大环境下,各级学校推行网课,而上网老师和学生课穿不穿正式的服装引发了各方的争议。

1.

推理判断题。从第一段“As the novel coronavirus epidemic continues, one school after another has organized online classes.” 随着新型冠状病毒疫情的持续,一所又一所学校组织了在线课程。由此判断出网络课程在学校很流行。故选A项。

2.

细节理解题。本题问“要求学生上网课穿校服的原因不包括哪些”,根据第二段第一句中的“jokes emerge about each other’s appearance”关于彼此的外表会出现笑话,第五段第一句中的“The practice can improve students’ sense of formality”这些实践可以提高学生的正式感,与最后一句中的“make them remember their identities as students”让他们记住自己学生的身份,可知,A、B、D 三项是原因;C项说法文中未提及。故选C项。

There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills, you should first master the skills of reading and listening.

Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentence, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammars or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across. but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example, in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.

As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening. For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.

If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve quickly, and you can be a fluent English speaker one day.

1.According to the writer, which should you improve first among the four skills?

A.Reading and listening.

B.Reading and writing.

C.Writing and speaking.

D.Speaking and listening.

2.To improve your reading, when you read you should ________.

A.look up all the new words in the dictionary

B.think about what you are reading actively

C.spend more time studying grammars

D.copy as many words and sentences as possible

3.The underlined phrase “come across” in Paragraph 2 can probably be replaced by “________”. A.meet B.discover

C.hear D.look for

最新高一年级英语阅读理解专项练习及答案(50篇)

高中阅读理解专项训练附答案解析 1篇 Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges. Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese.Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音调). One of the study's authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “actually tunes our sensory system”.This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr.Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems. Mandarin speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码)of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do.This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role.A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned. For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years. As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi” in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds. The lead author of the study, Patrick C.M.Wong, said it might work both ways.It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments. 1.Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training? A.Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music. B.Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain. C.Because music training might help people with language study. D.Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music. 2.The underlined word “intoned” in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word “________”. A.created B.spelled C.seemed D.pronounced 3.What would be the best title for this passage? A.Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter Than English Speakers B.Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study C.Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning D.Schools Need to Develop Music Programs
