Hungry? 36as it sounds, showing weight-conscious women pictures of attractive, sweet foods 37 their resolution to eat healthily, rather than encouraging them to eat the unhealthy foods.Advertisers firmly believe images of tasty foods persuade people to buy the goods 38 psychologist Floor Kroese thought that temptation(诱惑) might in fact heighten self-control. To prove this theory, Kroese and her colleagues, 39 a memory test, asked fifty-four 40 students to look at a picture of either a slice of chocolate cake or a flower. The researchers then questioned the students about their diets and offered them a choice between 41 and the oatmeal cookie.Women shown the cake picture gave a higher priority to their healthy eating 42 than those shown the flower. They were also significantly more likely to pick the oatmeal cookie –which was generally considered as the healthier choice.“It seems that seeing a food temptation reminded people of their goals of watching their weight, and thus 43 them to act in an appropriate manner,” says Kroese.44 studies suggested that smelling tasty, unhealthy foods made people rate healthy eating as highly important, but this is the first research to look at how seeing unhealthy foods 45 snacking behavior.Kroese suggests that sticking pictures of tempting foods on the refrigerator door may help bring weight-watching goals to mind. But she 46 that the results can only be applied to women wanting to lose weight; it is unclear whether they would be so to the general 47 .The findings suggest that while very tempting images seem to remind people of their weight-loss goals, weekly attractive images perhaps could then be more dangerous. 36.A.Actually B.Obviously C.Usually D.Unlikely 37.A.tests B.strengthens C.reflects D.weakens 38.A.so B.because C.but D.though 39.A.in charge of B.in the name ofC.in preparation for D.in comparison with40.A.smart B.young C.slim D.female 41.A.chocolate B.milk C.flowers D.eggs 42.A.menus B.advice C.intentions D.secrets 43.A.enabled B.required C.forced D.persuaded 44.A.Medical B.Professional C.Similar D.Previous 45.A.causes B.corrects C.affects D.speeds 46.A.realizes B.cautions C.predicts D.suspects 47.A.population B.research C.opinion D.situation Section C (12 marks)Directions: Complete the following passage by filling in each blank with one word that best fits the context. All countries have a different business culture. "I couldn't have done this without the support of my wife, my in-laws and my two kids, who have been so supportive of me."Fiaui, a firefighter by trade, arrived in New Brunswick in 2003 and found work with the parks and trails department with the City of Fredericton. He became involved with the local rugby scene, and for the past three years is back in his chosen field as a relief firefighter with the Fredericton Fire Department."I've met so many great people since I've been in Fredericton, and this is a very special day for me and my family. I'm happy to be a Canadian, but I'm also glad that I still hold dual citizenship in Western Samoa as well."The citizenship ceremony was overseen by a number of dignitaries(政府要员), including Lt.-Gov. Hermenegilde Chiasson, MP Andy Scott, Mayor Brad Woodside and John Barrett, director of operations for Citizenship and Immigration Canada.Chiasson joked by welcoming the new Canadians "to the country that invented ice skates, maple syrup and the case of beer with the built-in handle."The day was also special for Jean-Jacques Tshimenga, his wife Sarah, and their three children, formerly of the Democratic Republic of Congo."Canada Day is the day to celebrate the independence and freedom that we have in this country," he said.56.Most probably, Finaui’s son Tyler was born in .A.Western Samoa B.the Democratic Republic of CongoC.Canada D.Black Spruce57.It was an emotional day for Fiaui, because .A.he became a member of the local rugby team Black SpruceB.he could get away from Western SamoaC.he became a CanadianD.he was chosen as a relief firefighter58.What can we infer from the passage?A.Fiaui has been a firefighter for 5 years.B.Fiaui is still a citizen in Western Samoa.C.Fiaui is rugby player.D.Only the Fiaui family attended the ceremony.59.The country that invented ice skates, maple syrup and the case of beer with the built-in handle refers to .A.New Brunswick B.Western SamoaC.the Democratic Republic of Congo D.Canada60.Which of the following might be the best title?A.Big day for Fiaui—a new CanadianB.The story of Fiaui, a firefighterC.Canada Day—the day to celebrate independence and freedomD.A five-year journey of FiauiBWe’ve all been there, finishing a whole bag of chips out of boredom or downing cookie after cookie while cramming for a big test. But when done a lot—especially without realizing it—emotional eating can affect weight, health, and overall well-being.Not many of us make the connection between eating and our feelings. But understanding what drives emotional eating can help people take steps to change it.One of the biggest myths about emotional eating is that it's prompted by negative feelings. Yes, people often turn to food when they're stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious, or bored. But emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine's Day or the celebration of a holiday feast.Sometimes emotional eating is tied to major life events, like a death or a divorce. More often, though, it's the countless little daily stresses that cause someone to seek comfort or distraction in food.Emotional eating patterns can be learned: A child who is given candy after a big achievement may grow up using candy as a reward for a job well done. A kid who is given cookies as a way to stop crying may learn to link cookies with comfort. It's not easy to "unlearn" patterns of emotional eating. But it is possible. And it starts with an awareness of what's going on.We’re all emotional eaters to some extent (who hasn’t suddenly found room for dessert after a filling dinner?). But for some people, emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious weight gain. The trouble with emotional eating (aside from the health issues) is that once the pleasure of eating is gone, the feelings that cause it remain. And you often may feel worse about eating the amount or type of food you did. That’s why it helps to know the differences between physical hunger and emotional hunger.Next time you reach for a snack, check in and see which type of hunger is driving it. 61.People turn to emotional eating because .A.they are preparing for the testB.they enjoy the pleasure of eatingC.they feel better after eatingD.they want to seek comfort or distraction62.By saying “We’ve all been t here”, the author means .A.finishing a whole bag of chips out of boredom is badB.we are all emotional eaters to some extentC.our health will be affected by emotional eatingD.people eat more without realizing it63.According to the passage, what is the cause of emotional eating?A.Candies and cookies.B.Countless daily stresses.C.Negative feelings as well as positive feelings.D.Boredom and the test.64.If you want to break away from the patterns of emotional eating, the first thing you should do is to .A.tell physical hunger from mental hunger B.realize what is happeningC.stop seeking comfort from food D.relax and try to lose weight 65.Which of the followings is NOT true?A.The romance of sharing dessert on Valentine’s Day is good for our health.B.Major life events, like a death or a divorce contribute to emotional eating.C.We learn emotional eating when we are children.D.We may feel worse after emotional eating.CResearchers combing the rainforests of Brazil have uncovered four new species of fungi that turns ants into zombies(僵尸). Although it is not the first time the first time the has been seen affecting ants, the discovery of four distinct species highlights the level of biodiversity in the Amazon. The study, led by Assistant Professor David Hughes of the University of Pennsylvania, appears online in the journal PLoS One.Ants become infected when they come into contact with spores(孢子) released by the fungus. Within a week the ant enters a “zombie-like”state. “This so-called zombie fungus changes the behaviors of the ant, causing it to die in an exposed position,”the study authors write. The fungus then grows outof the head of the ant, releasing spores into the air, which rain down onto unsuspecting ants and the forest floor. In 2009, Hughes led a team of researchers studying “zombie-ants” in Indonesia. They found the infected ants consistently attached to leaves 25 centimeters (9.8 inches) above the ground in an environment with 95 percent humidity(湿度)—perfect conditions for the fungus to grow.In the current study, Hughes and colleagues found each species of fungus was different in size and shape, and adapted to live only in one particular species. Two of the species of fungus have also adapted to grow secondary spores, doubling their chances of finding a new host.Steve Shattuck, an ecologist with CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences says there are records of thefungus existing in Australia, but its range is limited to tropical(热带的) regions of Australia.“It’s hard to find. Exactly how common it is, who knows? But obviously if it was too common it would kill all the ants and then go away,” says Shattuck. And despite the fungus’ability at destroying a whole colony of ants, Shattuck says its potential for use in pest control is very limited.“What the paper found was that the fungi were species specific,” he sys. “So unless one of ants was your pest it doesn’t do you any good.”It also means the possibility that the fungi will turn our 2000 species of Australian ant into a zombie army is highly remote.66.Fungus can turn ants into zombies by .A.getting into their headsB.making the ants infected with sporesC.adapting to the environmentD.changing themselves into spores67.In which of the following are you most likely to find the fungus?A.America.B.The tropical regions of Australia.C.England.D.Egypt.68.According to the passage, which of the followings is a host?A.The fungus.B.The spores.C.The ants.D.The leaves.69.From what Steve Shattuck has said, we can infer that .A.the 2000 species of Australian ant are in great dangerB.fungus can be used in pest controlC.it is common to see zombie armies in AustraliaD.we needn’t worry about that the fungus will kill all the ants in Australia70.What is the main idea of the passage?A.How ants are turned into zombies.B.The discovery of four new species of fungi that turns into zombies.C.The discovery of four distinct species highlights the level of biodiversity in the Amazon.D.How fungus develop and kill zombies.Part IV Writing (45 marks)Section A (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. While the debate over school uniforms is complicated, the pros of wearing school uniforms are obvious. Most teachers and school officials feel that school uniforms make a better student. They believe that the uniforms reduce distractions(分心) and discipline problems. Some students have turned school into an unending fashion show. This distracts from learning as some kids spendmore time focused on their clothes than on homework. Some say that a child in a school uniform is more likely to take school seriously. Putting on the school uniform signals he or she is going to school just like dad dresses up to go to work. Schools report that when students dress in “work clothes”rather than “play clothes”they take a more serious approach to their studies. Some teachers feel wearing a school uniform helps build school spirit. Schools report an increase in school pride after introducing a uniform policy. To many parents, uniforms are a less-expensive alternative to shopping at specialty and department stores. They are becoming far less expensive than many other clothes. They argue that school uniforms are economical, especially compared to designer clothing. Therefore, in these parents’ eye, students don’t have to worry about whether what they wear looks good or not when they are dressed uniformly. They suggest that if students wore uniforms, their self-image would be based on academic achievement instead of on a wardrobe. They also say school uniforms last longer because they are made for repeated wash and wear. What’s more, school uniforms decrease fighting and violence that arises out of arguments over fashionable clothes. Children invariably tease those who do not have trendy clothes. Those who can’t afford name brand clothes are often sensitive about their clothing. Schools struggling with gang(一帮) problems report that school uniforms help ease tensions. The school uniform actually becomes a means of control by the school to fulfill its functions.Section B (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage. Many people are nervous before they take a test. But some people are so consumed by anxiety that they actually defeat themselves, performing poorly on the exam even when they know the material they are being tested on. Recently some researchers say they’ve developed a way to help people with extreme test-taking anxiety to relax before their exams. The technique involves having test-takers write down their fears, and that simple exercise results in a dramaticimprovement in test scores. Why students become so nervous that they are unable to perform in a test-taking situation? Before a test, they start worrying about the consequences. They might even start worrying about whether the exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when people worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources that could otherwise be used to focus on the exam.In a series of laboratory experiments, a group of 20 anxious college students was given a short math test and told to do their best. Afterwards, the students were either asked to sit quietly before taking the test again or to write about their thoughts and fears regarding the upcoming re-test. Researchers created a stressful testing environment, telling the students they would receive money if they did well on the second test. The group of students who sat quietly before retaking the second math test scored worse, their accuracy dropping by 12 percent on the second test. But students who wrote about their fears immediately before the re-test showed an average five percent improvement in accuracy on the second math test. What the researchers showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who’d done the writing intervention(干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. These students who most tended to worry were performing just as well as their classmates who don’t normally get nervous in these testing situations. It is suggested that even if a professor doesn’t allow students to write about their worst fears immediately before an exam or presentation, students should try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.81.How do the researchers relax people with test-taking anxiety?(No more than 7 words) (2 marks)82.Why do students become nervous when taking an exam? (No more than 6 words) (2 marks) 83.What do the experiments show? (No more than 11 words) (3 marks)84.What is the best title of the passage? (No more than 5 words) (3 marks)SECTION C(25 marks)据报道某市一女子名字很特别,别“张E”。
