A Red Red Rose鉴赏

Appreciation of “A Red, Red Rose” by Robert Burns “A Red, Red Rose” is one of Robert Burn's best-known poems. It is also a song in Scots based on traditional sources. I remembered that when I first read this poem in a listening material, it really shocked me just like love at first sight. In this poem, the poet compares his love to a rose in bloom and as sweet as a melody. He declares he will be in love with this person till the end of time, till the seas run dry and melt with the sun. He wishes his love well when he is thousands miles away.“A Red, Red Rose” was published in 1794, Burns wrote it as a traditional ballad, with four stanzas of four lines each, and each stanza has alternating lines of four iambs and three iambs. The first and third lines have four iambs, consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. The second and fourth lines consist of three iambs. Quatrains written in this manner are called ballad stanzas. This form of verse is well adapted for singing or recitation and originated in the days when poetry existed in verbal rather than written form. And the rhyme of the first and second stanza is “abcb”, and the third and fourth stanza “abab”.As for the writing techniques, first of all, the writer uses a lot of similes and metaphors in this poem. In the first stanza, Burns compares his love with a springtime blooming rose and then with a sweet melody. These are popular poetic images and this is the stanza most commonly quoted from the poem. Metaphor is also used in this poem. The second and third stanzas ends with the metaphor of the “sands of life,” or hourglass. Second, he writer uses repetition to express his intense love.We can find that the writer repeats the word “red” for several times, which represents the fullest and most lovely image of the rose in its ideal state, just like his lover. He also repeat the sentence “Till a’the seas gang dry”as a transition and emphasis. Besides, the writer also uses some other techniques like hyperbole and alliteration. In terms of the artistic features of this poem, I am quite impressed by its great charm of simplicity and its beautiful melodious tune. The language is simple but full of expression, and by his using of the simplest metres the writer creates a wonderful musical effect. And that is also why this poem is so popular and well known. This poem well represents the romantic features of that age. Romanticism emphasizes on the aesthetics of language, heavy use of imagery and word association to quickly convey emotions, which can also be seen from this poem. And the poem is very sweet and romantic in describing how deep the author's love goes. In all, “A Red, Red Rose” is a poem worth appreciating and studying, and its musical from worth listening, since it is full of passion, affection and love.。
