What did you do before forming Style?W: Well, we both played with a lot of other bands before teaming up with each other. I used to sing with a band called Ace, and Guy has recorded with Genesis and UB40 and Happy Mondays.M: So how long have you and Guy been together as Style?W: Since 1997.M: Do you play any music yourself?W: Yes, I play keyboard, and Guy plays the guitar and the drums.M: And how long have you been in the music business?W: I’ve had all sorts of jobs. When I left college, I worked as a waitress, a shop asisstant, a painter, a gardener … I could go on and on … but Guy has only ever been a musican. He’sbeen singing and playing since he was seventeen.M: Well, I hate to stop this, but that’s all the time we have. Suzie, it was great to talk to you. Good luck with the new record.(Text 10) MWelcome to this edition of “Know Your Town”. I’m John Munroe and I’m here to tell you about local food and eating out.Our town is very lucky to have a wonderful local market here. It was first located in front of the bank but at the beginning of the twentieth century, it was moved to a place by the river. When the new shopping center was built in the 1970s, it found a home under the two-storey car park, where it is still located today. The market is now open six days a week. On Tuesday to Saturday you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables as well as a variety of seafood. Every weekday that the market is open, there are shops selling old furniture — very popular —and on Sunday, you’ll find shops with local people selling handmade items, such as bags, cards, and clothes.Visitors often ask what local dish we are known for. There isn’t one particular dish that stands out, though we do have an apple cake that is n’t really made anywhere else. One of the best places to try that is at a new café, Barton’s, which serves freshly baked cakes along with home-made ice cream.Every morning, local fishermen sell their day’s catch. They’ve been doing that for as long as anyone can remember of course, but the harbor looks very different than it did a few years ago. Most of the restaurants used to be at the far end, but that part was redeveloped and the restaurants have moved to the other end.002(Text 1)M: Hi, Linda. I heard that you used to live in Canada?W: Oh, I used to live in Australia when I was young, and later moved to America, but I never lived in Canada.(Text 2)W: Did you have a good time yesterday?M: Yes! I went to a park to go fishing with my friend. It started raining at noon, so we went and relaxed in a café until 7 pm, when we went to the cinema.(Text 3)M: Did you go hiking in the mountains last weekend?W: I didn’t end up going hiking after all. My friend just bought a new sports car, so we went out in that. It was just like the one in that TV advertisement.(Text 4)W: Hello. I’d like to reserve a table for tonight at eight o’clock.M: Certainly ma’am. For how many people? The largest table we have left seats six.W: Oh, great. We’ll be a party of fiv e.(Text 5)M: I have just finished four years in college studying computer programming.W: That’s good, but I don’t see any work experience in that field on your application.M: That’s true, but I’m confident I can do the job well.(Text 6)W: Jack, look over there. Is that Tom there under the tree?M: No. I don’t think so. Tom is a bit taller. I think it’s his elder brother Henry.W: I didn’t know Tom had a brother. The two brothers really do look alike.M: Yes, they do, but they like totally different things.W: I know Tom likes reading and writing. What about his brother?M: Henry likes sports.(Text 7)M: Mum, where are my new shoes?W: They’re under the chair by the window.M: Where is my bag?W: Oh, Alan. It’s by the door. Are you ready?M: Yes.W: Have you got your school books?M: Yes, they are in my bag. Look. Oh, no! Where is my passport?W: It’s on the table by the window, in front of the plant.M: Oh, yes. Thanks, Mum. See you on Sunday.(Text 8)W: I was asked some questions by someone doing a survey today.M: Was it about what you watched on TV last night? I got asked about that a few days ago. W: Actually, he wanted to know how I felt about the new shopping centre they’re thinking of building near the railway station — whether I felt it w ould solve some of the town’s problems or actually just cause more.M: Well, you’ve certainly got a strong opinion about that! You’ve always been telling me what a rubbish idea you think it is. The crowds …W: True! I told him what I thought, but I don’t think he wrote down my answers to any of his questions. I’m going to sit down and write a letter to the local paper now.(Text 9)W: Hi Mike! Are you free tonight?M: Actually, I am. Why?W: Well, I was going to the cinema with Sara’s brother Steve, but he is sick, so now I don’t have company. I’ve got two free tickets.M: Great! How did you get free tickets? They cost £4 each! I paid £8 last week for me and my brother.W: My cousin works at the cinema so he gave me some tickets —and we can also get free popcorn and drinks.M: Wow! What’s the film? Aren’t they playing that new one?W: Yellow Moon? Yes, that’s playing now, though I’d prefer to see the new action movie Sonic Boom.M: That sounds good. I saw a terrible film called Seafarer last week. Anything is better than that! W: OK. Let’s meet at 6 outside the cinema. We can have a coffee before the film in the new rooftop coffee bar.M: Let’s make that 5:30, as the film starts at 6:30. Then we’ve got time to chat and I can show you some great holiday photos.W: I’ll ask my dad to pick us up afterwards, as the buses stop early on Saturdays and it’s a long way to walk to your house!M: Oh, and don’t forget to bring the computer book you borrowed from me. I need it for Monday’s IT class.W: I won’t. See you later.(Text 10) WGood morning. We’ll start today’s news. A crime happened yesterday. An 80-year-old man was in the hospital last night after he was found outside his house injured in the street. Police have asked him some questions about the crime. Now the man is in a stable condition. Further details of the fact need to be examined. In sports news, about a football match. Although the Japanese team struggled to win one goal, the English team beat it and won again for the third straight match, winning at their home stadium 3-1. The manager said that he was particularly pleased with the attacking style of his team, which moved fast without any stops. But he was unhappy about his team being given a red card by mistake which led to the single goal for the other team. They had a quarrel with the judges. Finally, the weather for today seems to be quite good. It is likely to have any showers. Mostly the day will be bright and dry. You can have a good time without concerning too much about the weather, but remember to have enough water. That’s all for today. Thank you for listening.003(Text 1)M: Shall we go to the park by bike or by subway?W: But the park is a two-hour bus ride away. Let’s take the subway. It’s faster.(Text 2)M: I’m sorry that Annie was rude to you. She is quite polite usually, but our son has been very sick and she is upset.W: Oh, I have children of my own, so I understand how she feels.(Text 3)M: I need to get my car fixed right away. It makes a strange sound whenever I speed up or slow down.W: What you need to do is trade that piece of junk in for something better. You’re a manager here, for goodness sake!(Text 4)W: Pass me the potatoes again, please. Oh, and could I have some more chicken?M: Don’t you think you’re eating to o much?W: I’ll just eat a little more, I promise.(Text 5)W: Hello. What can I do for you?M: I’d like to buy a pair of shoes. How much are these?W: Let me see. Those are 15 dollars for a pair. It’s 25 dollars if you buy two pairs.M: That’s a very reasonable price. I’ll take two pairs then.(Text 6)M: Hi, Mom.W: Hi, Robbie. You’re home from school so early today.M: Yeah, they’re getting the lecture hall ready for the graduation ceremony, so we all went home early. It’s too noisy to study.W: Well, no w that you’re here, can you help me with dinner? I need those tomatoes washed and the beans boiled.M: Mom, give me a break, please. Alexandra’s coming over to help me study for my math final. W: In that case, you can wash the dishes after dinner.(Text 7)W: You’re so lucky, Todd. You travel all over the world. I never leave Chicago!M: Yeah —but it’s hard work. I just practice, practice and play tennis all the time. I don’t get time to see much.W: What about last year? Where did you go?M: Well, in Ja nuary I was in Melbourne, for the Australian Open. It’s a beautiful city.W: And what’s Dubai like? When were you there?M: In February. We went from Australia to Dubai for the Dubai Tennis Open. Interesting place —I enjoyed it.W: And Paris! That’s where I want to go! What’s Paris like?M: Well, I will take part in the French Open in May next year. I hope I will have time to see it then.(Text 8)M: You need a break. You’ve been cooking every night. I’ve had to work late all month. Let’s go out to dinner tonight.W: That would be wonderful.M: I’ve heard of a new Indian restaurant downtown. How does that sound?W: You know I love Indian food! I had a friend in college who was from India. Sometimes I would go over to her house and her mother would cook for us. It was delicious.M: All right, then let’s go. Th e place closes at 8:30, so we’d better leave now. It’ll take about half an hour to get there.W: I wonder why the restaurant closes so early. It’s a Friday night. Restaurants are usually open late on weekends.M: I’ll bet the cook is an Indian mother who needs to get home to look after her children. (Text 9)M: Oh, dear! I don’t know anybody here at the party.W: Don’t worry. They’re all very nice. I’ll tell you who everybody is. Do you see that man o ver there?M: The man near the window?W: Yes. That’s Paul. He’s the one talking to Sophie. He’s a banker — very rich — and very funny. He works in New York.M: Wow! So he’s Paul. OK. And that’s Sophie next to him, the girl who’s laughing?W: Yes. She must be laughing at Paul’s jokes. She’s lovely. She’s a teacher at Bristol University. She teaches Business Studies.M: And who’s that woman on the left, the one drinking wine?W: That’s Helena —a very nice lady. She’s a writer. She writes stories for children. They’re excellent.M: And who’s that man she’s talking to? The guy eating crisps?W: Helena’s talking to Roger. He’s an interesting man. He works for the British Museum.M: Really? Wow! What a job! So that’s Paul and Sophie … Helena and Roger … Now ther e are two more over there, looking at a photo on the guy’s phone. Who are they?W: That’s Sam and Penny. They make clothes for children. And I think that’s everybody!M: OK, thanks! Now if you can just introduce me …W: Of course! Come on — let me introduce you to Paul first.(Text 10) MGood evening, everyone. I’m Robert, and welcome to the BBC weather forecast. There was a real sense of autumn about the weather today. During the early hours, showers swept across the UK, and the clearing skies meant a cold start to the day for Northern Ireland, which saw temperatures fall back to 6°C.During the morning, the rain stopped for southeast England, but that area can still expectsome wind and showers. During the day, these showers will become heavy at times, particularly across the southern half of England and Wales.Wales holds the record for the wettest place of the day, at least as of 6 pm GMT, with 50mm of rain recorded. During the afternoon and evening, the showers will gradually increase, producing longer spells of rain particularly across Northern Ireland and Scotland.Showers did eventually gather across the southwest too but the heaviest of these arrived after dusk. In fact, there were quite a lot of showers by the evening and also some very strong wind s. Tomorrow the weather will also be windy and cold, so wear something warm if you’re heading out. That’s all from me. The next weather report will be in an hour, at 8 o’clock. See you then.004(Text 1)W: You can change planes in either Chicago or Denver.M: You mean there’s no direct flight from New York to Boston?(Text 2)M: I told you to wake me up at a quarter past three. It’s only ten past the hour right now.W: That’s right. But look at the hour hand! It’s pointing to the four!(Text 3)W: Your room looks different. Have you got a new desk?M: No, I’ve just moved it. It was getting too hot sitting under the window, so I put it over there opposite the door.(Text 4)W: Are you ready for Christmas, Jack?M: Are you joking, Mary? I haven’t even started. I’ve done zero shopping.W: I am looking forward to it, because it means a holiday, delicious food, parties and presents. (Text 5)W: You don’t look happy. What’s wrong?M: It’s my new roommate.W: What did he do to make you so angry?M: I don’t even want to talk about it. I’ve never met such a rude man before.(Text 6)M: Hi, Wendy. I’m going to Isabel’s. It has a clearance sale.W: Really? That’s wonderful. Can you wait a second? I need to change.M: All right, but hurry up.W: Should we ask Cindy to come along? She saw a silk evening dress there last month which she liked very much.M: She already bought that dress! She wore it last night at Lily’s party.W: Oh! That isn’t like her.M: Hurry up, will you? We’ll have to go to a gas station first and it would be better to be there before lunch.W: All right. I’m ready now. Let’s go.(Text 7)W: There is a new musical at the Orpheum Theatre this weekend. Would you like to go?M: I don’t really care for musicals. Are there any Shakespeare plays on?W: Th ere’s just A Midsummer Night’s Dream on at the Poseidon, but we just saw that last year. M: What’s playing at the Caledonian Theatre?W: An Italian opera named The Magic Flute.M: We could go to see that. I do like operas. Maybe we should invite Joan to go with us. I remember once that she said she loves operas.W: That’s a good idea. We haven’t seen her for a while. That would be fun.M: I’ll give her a call tonight after dinner, and you call for tickets, OK?W: Great!(Text 8)W: I’ve bought so many presents that my suitcase won’t close!M: Let’s have a look. Whose is this music CD?W: It’s for my cousin.M: And what about this toy camel?W: It’s for my sister. She wanted something that is really Egyptian.M: OK, well, it can go in here. And this T-shirt?W: That’s for my brother. He wanted a cap but I couldn’t find a nice one.M: OK. Let’s put it next to the vase. We don’t want that to break.W: That’s for Mum. She collects them. Oh, that book can go in there.M: I bet that’s for your dad. He loves reading, doesn’t he?W: Yes, it is. Oh, and don’t forget this picture of the Pyramids. It’s for my friend Sara. She loves history.M: OK. Now I think we can shut your case.(Text 9)W: How do you feel now, Mark?M: I feel absolutely horrible. My temperature is 39 degrees Celsius and I’ve got a headache and a runny nose.W: How’s your stomach?M: My stomach aches a bit at times, but it’s not very serious.W: Has your toothache gone now?M: Yes, for the most part, but it still aches slightly at times.W: How about your tongue? Does it still hurt?M: No. I really should have been more careful yesterday morning when I was drinking the coffee. It was really hot. I guess I just haven’t had much luck lately.W: Yes. But I’m sure everything will be fine soon. By the way, have you taken your pills?M: Yes. I took the blue ones before lunch and the black ones just after lunch. Lisa, could you do me a favor? I’d really like to have some chicken soup tonight. Could you make some?W: I really think you should drink more water. The chicken soup is too fatty. Why don’t I make a bowl of tomato soup for you?M: Oh, no, I don’t really like tomato soup. How about your home-made mushroom soup?W: Sounds good!(Text 10)WDo you love singing? Do you want to have a good laugh? Then don’t miss the movie Sing. It’ll be on this Wednesday, just two days from today. The movie is set in a world exactly like our own, but instead of humans, all of the characters are speaking and singing animals. Buster Moon, a koala bear, owns a once-popular theatre that has fallen on hard times. Ever the optimist, Buster won’t stop until he thinks of a creative way to raise money and restore it to its former glory. He decides to organize a singing competition offering a prize of $1,000 to the winner. But due to a mistake made by his secretary, the competition flyers go out advertising a prize of $100,000. With that kind of money to win, it’s no surprise that almost all of the animals in the city are eager to win. One of them is Johnny, voiced by Taron Egerton. He dreams of becoming a popular singer. He blows the judges away with his talent. But he faces a big problem. His father doesn’t approve when he tells him he wants to sing. Will he succeed in becoming a singer? Go to the theatre and find out.005(Text 1)W: John, why don’t you watch NBA games on TV?M: Oh, I’m studying for a Chinese test tomorrow.(Text 2)M: How old is your son, Carrie?W: He just turned two in April. You know, our family has a lot of birthdays in the spring. His sister was born the month before, and I was born the month after.(Text 3)M: Lisa, shall we go to the library after class? I want to get some reference books to help me write my term paper.W: Sure, Sam. The library is a good place for me to study.(Text 4)W: Is this the new painting you bought?M: Yes, I got it at the art market last weekend.W: It looks wonderful in this room. I wish I had picked one up for myself.(Text 5)M: I’ve just been to see that new musical that everyone’s talking about.W: Oh really? And is the plot as good as people say?M: Yeah, it was good. For me, though, what stood out most were the people playing the two leading roles. But I found the songs rather unimpressive, for the most part.W: Well, it sounds as if I should go and see it sometime, anyway.(Text 6)W: Hurry up. I don’t want to be late for our flight.M: I’m coming.W: What time does our flight take off?M: At half past seven, just eighty minutes from now.W: How can we get there in such a short time?M: I don’t think we can get there by subway or by bus.W: Let’s take a taxi. I’ll call one through my mobile app Uber.M: Good idea.(Text 7)W: Who is your favorite singer, Eric?M: I really like Usher. He’s a great singer and also a good dancer. He’s also a very successful songwriter and actor.W: How did he become a singer?M: Well, Usher’s parents thought he could be a great singer when he grew up, so they moved to Atlanta, Georgia when he was 12 years old.W: Why did they move to Atlanta?M: His parents wanted him to take part in singing competitions all over Atlanta. It worked out well, since he was discovered by a record company after a while.(Text 8)W: Hi, Mick! Did I see you at the restaurant last night?M: What, that new one on Elm Street? Were you there too?W: Yes, I was at the table near the corner with my friends.M: Did you like the food? I thought it was not very good.W: Well, I had a salad and that was good, but Paul had the fish and he didn’t like it.M: I had a veggie burger.W: So did Mina! She said it was awful.M: Yes, it was really oily.W: I think they make good Italian dishes.M: Yes, the spaghetti looked good.W: Yes, Ellie had that, and Pete had the steak, but he thought it was too salty.M: My friend Jenny had a burger and salad. She said it was tasty.W: So did Tim, but he said the salad wasn’t fresh and it had an unpleasant smell.M: Well, I for one won’t be going there again!(Text 9)W: Ivan, is that you?M: Gina? What are you doing here?W: I’m just picking up some supplies. I’m working as a buyer’s assistant. I’m finally working in the fashion industry! Next week I’ll go to San Francisco with my boss, and the week after that I’m helping to arrange a charity fashion show here in Riverside. How are you doing?M: Fine. I’m finishing up a training course at the technical college. I’m trying to get a job as a help-desk technician.W: You look a little tired. You should get more sleep.M: I can’t. I have a part-time job as a security guard, and my hours are crazy. Tonight I start work at 9 pm and all this week I’m working nights until 6 am. Then next week after I finish my classes, I switch to days. It’s a crazy schedule.W: Don’t worry. Help-desk technicians are really in demand these days —I’m sure you’ll be able to get a job with better hours as soon as you finish your course.M: Yes, I’m looking forward to that!W: Hey, I’m not going back to work for a couple of hours. Do you have time for coffee? I haven’t seen you in a while. We can catch up on all our old classmates.M: Sure … and I’d also like to ask your advice about a presentation I’m giving in class next week. (Text 10) MGood morning, it’s eight o’clock and time for the Morning News Highlights, Michael Johnson reporting. A boat with eighteen people on board — twelve tourists from the UK, Australia and New Zealand, and six Indonesian crew members —got into trouble somewhere between the islands Bali and Lombok in Indonesia. Waves nearly five meters high struck the 23-meter-long boat. The engine broke down and there was only a small machine that provided power for three lights on board. The boat had no radio receivers. Luckily, however, one of the tourists, a teenager named Rebecca Fyfe, had a cell phone. She sent a text message to her friend, Nick Hodgson, who was asleep in a hotel in the UK. He called Rebecca, but they couldn’t talk for long because her battery was low, and she couldn’t give the boat’s exact position. Then Nick called a branch of the British coast guard, who made phone calls to coast guards in both Indonesia and Australia. Although the coast guards were unable to get in touch with Rebecca because her cell phone battery died, an Indonesian navy boat and another ship soon found them. They were unable to rescue them immediately because the waves were still too high. Eventually, the boat and everyone on board arrived safely at a small port in the Gili Islands, about 100 kilometers east of Bali.006(Text 1)W: What a beautiful painting!M: I’m glad you like it. It’s a Christmas gift from my son to you. He spent a week on it.(Text 2)W: Hi, Jim. You are looking good. New shoes?M: Not really. I bought them and this T-shirt last month, but I got this pair of jeans yesterday. (Text 3)W: Hello. I’m here to complain about my travel experience. I’ve just got back from the holiday you arranged for me. The hotel was really awful — awful food, awful bedroom!M: I’m so sorry to hear that. Let me call my manager.(Text 4)M: I don’t feel too good. I think I might have overdone the sunbathing today.W: You’re not used to all this heat. So, wha t about dinner?M: I don’t feel like anything at the moment. I think I’ll lie down for a while.(Text 5)W: Shall we go clubbing on Saturday night?M: I can’t. I have to write an essay on Sunday —and anyway, I haven’t got much money. Why don’t you come round and watch a DVD and we’ll have a pizza or something?W: Oh, come on! Your sister will be back from university for the weekend. She’ll want to go clubbing.M: Yeah, OK. I’ll try and finish my essay tonight.(Text 6)W: Excuse me. Is this seat taken?M: No. You can sit here if you like.W: Thanks. Are you going somewhere or meeting someone?M: I am on my way to Paris to visit my wife. She’s working there as a fashion designer. And you? W: I’m picking up my daughter here. Her flight arrives at the airp ort at about 4:30 pm.M: It’s only 3:30 pm now. You’re quite early.W: Better early than late.(Text 7)M: We have to find a way to pack all the things for the camping trip before we leave tomorrow. W: Yes, David. We have our car and George’s truck. We should be able to fit everything in the two vehicles.M: Yeah. I think we should put the tents in his truck and the sleeping bags in our car.W: We could put the sleeping bags in the truck too. That way, we’ll have room to take the stereo. M: Yeah, thou gh if we can’t take the stereo, I’ll take my guitar. I’m looking forward to playing! W: Um … I’m really sorry to have to tell you, but Brian broke your guitar yesterday.。
