最早提出「體育」一詞，可追溯至 1760 年，法國的報刊利用「體育」 這個詞語來談論兒童的身體教育問題。
到了 19 世紀末，中國從日本引入歐洲式 的「體操課」到全國學校。
直至 1923 年，中國官方文件-新學制課程標準正式把 「體操課」改成「體育課」 。
體育的各種含義： 體育的各種含義： 學校體育 Physical Education 是指有目的、有計劃及有組織地傳授鍛鍊身體的知 識和技能，以促進身體全面發展、增強體質、培養優良的品德及堅強意志的教育 過程。
運動 Sport 運動亦稱競技運動。
最初的運動是指：遊戲、娛樂活動，是與社會文 化不可分割的一部份。
但越來越趨向著重競技成份，為了擊敗對手，並取得優異 成績而進行的競賽。
所以運動是利用科學化、而有系統性的訓練，提升個人或團 隊的體格、體能、心理和運動技術等各方面的潛力。
身體鍛鍊 Physical Training 是指以強身健身或以醫療為目的的活動。
身體鍛鍊有 時也會有競賽的形式 但不單純追求競賽的成績 反而講求自我教育和鍛鍊效果 ， ， 。
康樂活動 Recreation 是指工餘或課後，身體直接參與活動的娛樂。
它是有別於看 電影這一般性的娛樂活動。
康樂活動是為了消閒、娛樂、培養興趣和休息為目的 的活動。
這基於社會現代化，勞動時間因此而縮短，所以空閒時間增多。
其次學 校教育的成功，學生在畢業後仍能繼續其運動的習慣。
最後更可透過康樂活動以 舒緩工作的疲勞和緊張的情緒。
體 育 在 各 方 面 的 比 較 體育由學校體育、運動、身體鍛鍊及康樂活動所組成。
它們互有關連，又互有差 異這構成體育的整體。
共同成份 1 身體直接參與活動。
2 都要求全面發展身體，提高有機體的機能能力。
3 在過程中，要學習一定的體育知識，並掌握一定的技能。
4 在內容和手段上，有許多是並用的。
