Reading comprehensionAfter 1785, the production of children’s books in the United States increased but remained largely reprints of British books, often those 1 by John Newbery. Ultimately, however, it was not the cheerful, commercial-minded Newbery, but Anglo-Irish author Maria Edge-worth who had the strongest influence on this period of American children’s literature. The eighteenth century had seen a gradual 2 away from the spiritual intensity of earlier American religious writings toward a more generalized moral system.Americans looked on children’s books as vehicles for instruction, not amusement, though they would accept a moderate amount of fictional entertainment for the 3 of more successful instruction. As the children’s book market expanded what both public and publishers wanted wasthe kind of fiction Maria Edgeworth wrote; stories interesting enough to 4 children. American reaction against imported books for children set in after the War of 1812 with the British. A wave of nationalism permeated everything, and the self-conscious new nation found foreign writings( particularly those from the British monarchy) 5 for the children of a democratic republic, a slate of self-governing, equal citizens. Publishers of children’s books beganto 6 American writers to write for American children. When they responded, the pattern established by Maria Edgeworth was at hand, 7 to most of them for both its rationalism and its high moral tone. Early in the 1820’s, stories of willful children learning to obey, of careless children learning to take care, of 8 children learning to think for others,”started to flow from American presses, successfully achieving Edgeworth’s tone, though rarely her lively style. Imitative as they were, these early American 9 were quite distinguishable from their British counterparts. Few servants appeared in them, and if class distinctions had by no 10 disappeared, there was much democratic spirits on the worthiness of every level of birth and work.1.D2.B3.E4.F5.M6.C7.I8.G9.K 10.JF1. Jury members must avoid ______ with the defendants and their families.C B N MD G JEF A“Most episodes of absent-mindedness — forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room — are caused by a simple lack of attention, says Schacter. You’re supposed to remember something, but you haven’t encoded it deeply.Encoding, Schacter explains, is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impact on recalling it later. Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don’t pay attention to what you did because you are involved in a conversation, you’ll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe (衣柜). “Your memory itself isn’t failing you,” says Schacter, “rather, you didn’t give your memory system the information it needed.”Lack of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness. “A man who can recite sports statistics from 30 years ago.”says Zelinski, “may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox. Women have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they pay more attention to their environment, and memory relies on just that.Visual cues can help prevent absent-mindedness, says Schacter, “But be sure the cue is clear and available, if he cautions. If you want to remember to take a medication (药物) with lunch, put the pill bottle on the kitchen table — don’t leave it the medicine chest and write ourselves a note that you keep in a pocket.Another common episode of absent-mindedness: walking into a room and wondering why you’re there. Most likely, you were thinking about something else. “Everyone does this from time to time,” says Zelinski. The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room, and you’ll likely remember.1. Why does the author think that encoding properly is very important?A) It helps us understand our memory system better.B) It enables us to recall something from our memory.C) It expands our memory capacity considerably;D) It slows down the process of losing our memory.2. One possible reason why women have better memories than men is that _______.A) they have a wider range of interestsB) they are more reliant on the environmentC) they have an unusual power of focusing their attentionD) they are more interested in what’s happening around them3. A note in the pocket can hardly serve as a reminder because ________.A) it will easily get lostB) it’s not clear enough for you to readC) it’s out of your sightD) it might get mixed up with other things4. What do we learn from the last paragraph?A) If we focus our attention on one thing, we might forget another.B) Memory depends to a certain extent on the environment.C) Repetition helps improve our memory.D) If we keep forgetting things, we’d better return to where we were.5. What is the passage mainly about?A) The process of gradual memory loss.B) The causes of absent-mindedness.C) The impact of the environment on memory.D) A way of encoding and recalling.BDCADI’m usually fairly suspicious of any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that today’s children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children aged 9 to 17 exhibited a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.Why are America’s kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation — brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things — and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.Given that we can’t turn the clock back, we can still do plenty to help the next generation cope.At the top of the list is nurturing (培育) a better appreciation of the limits of individual-ism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protects individuals against stress. To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.Limit the amount of virtual (虚拟) violence your children are exposed to. It’s not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale.Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn’t have to ruin your life.1. The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about people’s state of mind are______.A)surprising B)confusing C)illogical D)questionable2. What does the author mean when he says “we can’t turn the clock back”?A) It’s impossible to slow down the pace of change.B) The social reality children are facing cannot be changed.C) Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten.D) It’s impossible to forget the past.3. According to an analysis, compared with normal children today, children treated as mentally ill50 years ago ________.A) were less isolated physically B) were probably less self-centeredC) probably suffered less from anxiety D)were considered less individualistic4. The first and most important thing parents should do to help their children is _________.A) to provide them with a safer environment B) to lower their expectations for themC) to get them more involved socially D) to set a good model for them to follow5. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?A) Anxiety, though unavoidable, can be coped with.B) Children’s anxiety has been enormously exaggerated.C) Children’s anxiety can be eliminated with more parental care.D) Anxiety, if properly controlled, may help children become mature.DBCCAVery old people do raise moral problems for almost everyone who comes in contact with them. Their values —this can’t be repeated too often— are not necessarily our values. Physical comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important things. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with decaying food covered by small worms, and an old person lying alone in bed, taking no notice of the worms. But is it interfering with personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of? Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in danger of carrying this concept of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old.Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car —it needs more mechanical maintenance as it gets older. You can carry this comparison right through to the provision of spare parts. But never forget that such operations are painful experiences, however good the results. And at what point should you cease to treat the old body? Is it morally right to try to push off death by pursuing the development of drugs to excite the forgetful old mind and to activate the old body, knowing that it is designed to die? You cannot ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long as they can see the technical opportunities, they will feel bound to give them a try, on the principle that while there’s life, there’s hope. When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun.1. It is implied in Paragraph 1 that __________.A) very old people enjoy living with their relativesB) social services have nothing to do with very old peopleC) very old people would like to live alone so that they can have more personal freedomD) very old people are able to keep their rooms very clean2. Some social workers think that __________.A) health and safety are more important than personal freedomB) personal freedom is more important than health and safetyC) old people should keep their rooms cleanD) one should not take the risk of dealing with old people3. The body of the old is compared to a car in that __________.A) They both need more mechanical maintenance as they get older.B) They both face a certain kind of risk.C) They are both made up of different parts.D) They are both easily hurt or harmed.4. The word “it” in the last paragraph refers to __________.A) the conclusion you have come to B) your talk to the old peopleC) whether age is happy or unpleasant D) one’s money or one’s health5. The author thinks that __________.A) medical decisions for old people should be left to the doctorsB) old people can enjoy a happy life only if they are very richC) the opinion that we should try every means possible to save old people is doubtfulD) it is always morally right to treat old people and push off deathCBACCHuman wants seem endless. When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when a executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure boats dance into view. The many wants of mankind might be regard as making up several levels. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears. The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and new houses.By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction –the level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of foods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Amon g them are vacation trips, the best medical and dental care, and entertainment. Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing. On the fourth level, a greater percentage of consumers’ spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increased, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. After filling our stomachs, our clothes closets, our garage, our teeth, and our minds, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.1. According to the passage, man will begin in to think about such needs as housing and clothingonly when __________.A) he has saved up enough moneyB) he has grown dissatisfied with his simple shelterC) he has satisfied his hungerD) he has learned to build house2. It can be inferred from the passage that by the end of World War II most Americans__________.A) were very rich B) lived in povertyC) had the good things on the first three levels D) didn’t own automobiles3. Which of the following is NOT related to “physical satisfaction”?A) A successful career. B) A cozy home.C) A good service. D) A family car.4. What is then main concern of man of the fourth level?A) The more goods the better.B) The more mental satisfaction the better.C) The more “luxury” items the better.D) The more earnings the better5. The author is inclined to think that a fifth levelA) would be a little better than the fourth levelB) may be a lot more desirable than the first fourC) can be the last and the most satisfying levelD) will become attainable provided the government takes actionsCDABBWe can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?”“When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck? “And Pau l—why didn’t pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends —or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog.”That’s being friendly. But “lucky dog”? There’s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the“dog”bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck.“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for.” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phras e is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone ofvoice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people to you may save another mistake.1. This passage is mainly about __________.A) how to interpret what people sayB) what to do when you listen to others talkingC) how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with peopleD) Why we go wrong with people sometimes2. According to the author, the reason why we go wrong about our friends is that __________.A) We fail to listen carefully when they talkB) People tend to be annoyed when we check what they sayC) People usually state one thing but means anotherD) We tend to doubt what our friends say3. In the sentence “Maybe he doesn’t see it himself.” in the second paragraph, the pronoun “it”refers to __________.A) being friendly B) a bit of envy C) lucky dog D) your luck4. When we listen to a person talking, the most important thing for us to do is to __________.A) notice the way the person is talkingB) take a good look at the person talkingC) mind his tone, his posture and the look in his eyesD) examine the real meaning of what he says based on his manner, his tone and his posture5.
