”George said this swarm of bees was breath—taking, about 15,000bees。

AEach morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table, reading his book. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to copy him in every way he could. One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa, I try to read the book just like you, but I don’t understand it, and I forget what I understand as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the book do?”The grandpa quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.”The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandpa laughed and said, “You’ll have to move a little faster next time,” and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned. Out of breath, he told his grandpa that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, so he went to get a bucket instead. The grandpa said, “I don’t want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You’re just not trying hard enough.”The boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandpa the basket was empty again. Out of breath, he said, “Grandpa, it’s useless!”“So, you think it is useless?” the grandpa said, “Look at the basket.”The boy looked at the basket and for the first time he realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean.“Grandson, that’s what happens when you read the book. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you’ll be changed, inside and out.”1. What puzzled the grandson most was ________.A. why he forgot what he read soonB. whether it was useful to read booksC. what kind of book he could understandD. how he could read books like his grandpa2. Why did Grandpa ask his grandson to fetch a basket of water?A. To get him to realize the use of reading books.B. To punish him for not reading carefully.C. To clean the dirty basket in the river.D. To train him to run faster.3. What lesson can we learn from the story?A. The old are always wiser than the young.B. It is foolish to carry water with a basket.C. You can’t expect to remember all you read.D. Reading books can change a person gradually.4. What can be the best title for the text?A. Grandpa and grandsonB. Carrying water in a basketC. Baskets and booksD. Reading for total changingBIt was Sunday morning. I heard loud noises of moving furniture in the next room. I could almost feel the excitement of John who was soon going to get a room of his own. I knew how much he longed for his right to privacy when he was sharing a room with his younger brother, Robot. He said, “Mum, Can I have a room of my own? I could use Jeff’s. He won’t mind.”It was true that Jeff had graduated from college and flown from the nest. But would he mind? The room was theplace where I told him a thousand stories and we had a thousand talks. As close as we were, though, the time came when Jeff needed a door between us. His life was spreading into areas that had less to do with family. I no longer could-or-should know everything about him.It turned out that getting Jeff’s permission was easy. He said, “Of course, Mum, it would be selfish of me to hold on to it.” Then his voice softened, “Mum, I won’t be living at home again —you know that.” Behind his glasses, his eyes were lit with all the love. There were no doors closed here — they had all opened up again. As John and I were cleaning the room, I fixed my eyes on Jeff’s things around me and c ould almost touch the little boy I knew was gone forever. I looked at the room and, in my heart, I let it go. To hold on would be, as Jeff said, selfish. Now it was time for John, shouldering through the door, his eyes bright with promise of independence, to disappear behind the door. It was time for letting go to happen again.5. The underlined sentence in the second paragraph probably means “______”.A. Jeff needed his right to privacyB. Jeff finally flew out of the houseC. Jeff got tired of those familiar storiesD. Jeff would have less to do with his family6. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. John was moving to live with his brother.B. John was eager to get a room of his own.C. Jeff volunteered to give his room to John.D. Jeff refused to let his brother have his room.7. How did the author feel about her children’s sense of independence?A. Delighted.B. Jealous.C. Mixed.D. Embarrassed.8. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A. the children did not like to live with adultsB. all her three kids made the author feel depressedC. none of the members in the family thought the same wayD. the author loved and missed the time together with her kidsCHave you ever found yourself in this situation: You hear a song you used to sing when you were a child – a bit of nostalgia(怀旧) or “blast from the past,” as we say. But it is not a distant childhood memory. The words come back to you as clearly as when you sang them all those years ago.Researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They found that remembering words in a song was the best way to remember even one of the most difficult languages. Here is what they did. Researchers took 60 adults and randomly divided them into three groups of 20. Then they gave the groups three different types of “listen-and-repeat” learning conditions. Researchers had one group simply speak the words. They had the second group speak the words to a rhythm, or beat. And they asked the third group to sing the words. All three groups studied words from the Hungarian language for 15 minutes. Then they took part in a series of language tests to see what they remembered. Why Hungarian, you ask? Researchers said they chose Hungarian because not many people know the language. It does not share any roots with Germanic or Romance languages, such as Italian or Spanish. After the tests were over, the singers came out on top. The people who learned these new Hungarian words by singing them showed a higher overall performance. They did the best in four out of five of the tests. They also performed two times better than those who simply learned the words by speaking them.Dr. Katie Overy says singing could lead to new ways to learn a foreign language. The brain likes to rememberthings when they are contained in a catchy 3, or memorable 4, tune 5.Dr. Ludke said the findings could help those who struggle to learn foreign languages. On the University of Edinburgh’s website Dr. Ludke writes, “This study provides the first experimental evidence that a listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.”9. The “song” mentioned in the first paragraph is intended to______.A. recall the pastB. attract the readersC. introduce the topicD. compare the childhood with the present10. According to the pa ssage which language doesn’t share the same root with Germanic or Romance languages?A. HungarianB. SpanishC. ItalianD. English11. Based on the last two paragraphs, we can conclude that ______A. singing is the best way to learn a language.B. the brain probably works best when the foreign language learners sing the words.C. a listen-repeat method is very effective for any language learner.D. Dr. Katie Overy and Dr. Ludke disagree with each other.12. In which situation can the finding of the research be applied?A. A mother is going to teach her baby how to speak.B. A child is going to have his first music lesson.C. A student is going to learn a new English song.D. An American is going to learn some Chinese.DIf you live in a big city, there are many things to drive you crazy on your daily route, and it’s not just overcrowded subway trains.Vicky Zhao is a mainlander working in Hong Kong. For her, one thing she can’t put up with is people standing on the wrong side of the escalator(自动扶梯) in subway stations. “Escalators help us move faster and save time. It isn’t a place to rest,” the 24-year-old says. “I often see tourists block the way with their suitcases or chatting on the escalators during rush hours. It annoys me to no end.”Admitting she is not the patient type, Zhao says things are much better in Hong Kong than in cities on the mainland where “stand right, walk left” signs are often ignored. The logic behind the “stand right, walk left” escalator etiquette(礼仪) seems obvious. Even though you may want to catch your breath while you’re transported up or down, you should still consider others and leave enough space for people in a hurry, so that they can run and catch the train. Many cities’ escalators, including London’s and Beijing’s, use the “stand right, walk left” system to speed up the flow of people. (Australia is an exception and you should stand on the left side instead.) But some cities discourage people from moving on escalators out of safety re asons. In Hong Kong’s subway stations there are regular announcements asking people to “stand still” on escalators. Even so, most people in this fast-paced city observe the “stand right, walk left” etiquette. But the people who stand on escalators defend themselves by telling the walkers not to be so impatient. The BBC quotes one stander as saying: “If the person is in such a rush, why not just take the stairs? Even when the escalator is packed and there’s nowhere to move, I see these same people complaining about not being able to pass.”Whatever the escalator etiquette is in the place you live or visit, do what most people are doing and always be mindful of others: leave enough space between each other, don’t stay at the end of the escalator, and if someone is blocking your way, a simple “excuse me” is enough.13. In the second paragraph, the underlined word “It” refers to_____.A. the author’s living in the big city of Hong Kong.B. being crowded on the subway trains in rush hours.C. people’s block ing the way or chat on the escalators.D. people’s standing on the right side resting.14. When on the escalator, a majority of local people in Hong Kong_____.A. stand still as the railway stations require.B. ignore the “ stand right, walk left” signsC. use the stairs instead of escalators.D. follow the “stand right, walk left” etiquette.15. Which of the following statements is the writer’s opinion?A. People should stand right no matter where they are.B. People should do as the Romans do and consider others.C. People should do as they like on the escalators.D. People should be seriously criticized when they block the way.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

A.George Max showed up in a well-maintained lorry. He brought some tools, such as something to light a fire with, a smoker, a long-handled brush, a metal hive(蜂箱)tool, and a hive. As George moved abou t, he said in a low and calm voice, “You’d be amazed how many people call me with a swarm(一大群)like this; and by the time I come, they’ve destroyed the whole thing, down to the last bee.”George said this swarm of bees was breath-taking, about 15,000 bees. He placed the hive in a proper place. Holding the smoker close to the swarm, he pumped the bellows(风箱). Smoke has a calming effect on bees. George said this group was easy to deal with. They were heavy with honey, and their main purpose was to hold the group together until they could find a new hive.He went on smoking the swarm and let the bees pour into the hive. Most bees would only follow the queen to a new living place (yes, she has ladies-in-waiting that tend her every need). By dusk, most of the bees had disappeared into the hive.“Alright, it appears that we’ve got them all,” I looked hopefully in George’s direction. He paused. “If you don’t mind, we’ll wait a bit longer,” he said. “They have sent out scout bees, and I want to be sure we don’t leave any behind.” So we waited. And, look! Scout bees returned. If the hive is healthy, the population of bees will be on the increase. When the queen sensesthat it’s time for the hive to split, she will lose weight so she can fly, and then leave the hive with a large part of the bees. The bees left behind will hurry to hatch another queen and rebuild. If some day you come across a swarm of bees in your backyard, call in a local beekeeper. Then sit back and enjoy the show. Get your camera, because you’ll w ant to share this amazing phenomenon with everyone you know, especially children. And if you’ve gone this far, you might as well buy a hive of your own. We did.1. We can infer from the last but one paragraph______.A. the queen must keep fit to control othersB. the queen will leave if she finds no one supports herC. fatty queens are not welcome in a hiveD. there is only one queen in a hive4. How is the whole passage mainly developed?A. By analyzing causes.B. By giving examples.C. By giving descriptions.D. Progress indicates a person’s ability to change the way he is living at the moment. Progress must lead to a better life and a better way of doing things. All these, however, remain true only in so far as people want to accept technology and move forward by finding new and more efficient ways of doing things. However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the “good olddays”, efficiency comes with a price. When communication becomes more efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish .The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or to see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication gadets, such as mobile phones and ipads, people often do not take the effort to visit one another personally. A personal visit carries with the additional feature of having to be in the person’s presence for as long as the visit lasts. We cannot unnece ssarily excuse our selves or turn the other persons off. With efficiency also comes mass production. Such is the nature of factories and the success of industrialization today. Factories have improved efficiency. Unskillful tasks are left to machines and products are better made and produced with greater accuracy than any human hand could ever have done. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For example, many handcrafts(手工艺品) are now produced in a factory. Although this means that supply is better able to increase demand, now that the supply is quick and efficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality of the handcraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.Nevertheless, we must not commit the mistake of analyzing progress only from one point of view. In fact, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is required for old products to stay old.It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people’s attitude. The worst effects of progress will fall on those who are unable to rethink their attitudes and views of society. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is created.8. According to Paragraph 1, progress can benefit people when they are willing to _______.A. live a better lifeB. look for better methodsC. change ways of livingD. accept technology and advance steadily9. The underlined word “gadgets” is closest in meaning to _______.A. toolsB. messagesC. barriersD. skills10. The author explains “efficiency comes with a price” by _______.A. describing a processB. using examplesC. following time orderD. making classification11. What can be concluded from the last paragraph?A. Progress can suit the needs of daily life.B. People review the past with great regret.C. Technology should be introduced in a fixed way.D. People’s attitude d ecides the use of technology.D.Among my peers, the most common reasons to sit in front are: poor vision, poor hearing, and harder to fall asleep (my main reason). That’s about it. I’ve sat in the back and I’ve sat in the front, and I’ve seen no difference in how professors treat me. In fact, I sat in the front of my math class and still fell asleep a lot. I went to office hours for that class regularly and asked the professor if it bothered him and he said he understood completely. I put in the work outside the classroom and performed well on exams, and that’s what ends up on the transcript (成绩单).From my experience, going to office hours regularly, emailing questions that may be beyond the scope of class just out of your own curiosity, and reading ahead of time so you can ask good relevant questions are the best ways to give a professor a good impression. Where I’ve sat in the classroom hasn’t noticeably affected a professor’s opinion of me in the slightest.Typically, sitting at the front indicates to me that you want to hear everything I say and want to have more one-on-one questioning with me. Sitting in the middle suggests that you want to fit in, and will be better at group work. Sitting in the back usually means that you want to play with your phone. The people in the front seats will often get the highest grades, dropping as the rows go back. Yes, of course, this is a tendency and not a law, and there are exceptions. But I must point out that for some older professors, they actually can’t see the people in the back well.I have not noticed where to sit has any effect on attentiveness, participation and respectful behavior. I have noticed though, that students who sit in the back row are almost always disrespectful and inattentive. I have not observed any correlation between achievement and seat location, even though when I was a student myself, I usually preferred to sit in the front.12. According to the author, the best ways to impress professors do NOT include _____.A. preparing for the class in advanceB. asking questions through emailingC. going to office hours regularlyD. sitting in the front in every class13. What does the word underlined “correlation” in paragraph 5 probably mean?A. Connection.B. Balance.C. Difference.D. Separation.14. What is the author’s opinion of students sitting in the front?A. They may be better at group work.B. They may want to stay awake in class.C. They want to play with their phones.D. Their grades are always the highest.15. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?A. To persuade students to sit in the front.B. To analyze the advantages of sitting in the back.C. To show the effect of seating on study results.D. To discuss different seat locations in the class.

AMy name is Chelsea Chowderhead. A chowder is a kind of soup. I was laughed at because of my last name as soon as I started school. So when my family moved to South Carolina, I asked my dad if I could change my name.“You shouldn’t change who you are. L et people get to know you first and your name later. When you meet someone new, ask them a good question, something you’re really interested in. Once people start talking about themselves, they don’t judge you.”Two days later I headed to my new school for the first day of class. At lunch, I noticed that there were twin brothers who were talking to each other. I remembered my dad’s advice, so I decided to try.I noticed that their lunchboxes were identical. “What’s it like being a twin?” I asked. They looked surprised. Then one said, “No one has ever asked us that!”“Most of the time it’s good,” the other said. “When you’re a twin you always have someone to talk to and have lunch with.”In no time we were laughing and talking. Then one of the brothers said, “I’m Nicholas, and this is my brother, Nathaniel. What’s your name?”I took a deep breath and said, “I’m Chelsea Chowderhead.”“Chowder? Like the soup?” asked Nathaniel.“Yes,” I replied, looking down.“Hey, cool! Do you want to come over after school and play basketball with us?” Nathaniel asked. I nodded. And that is how I became friends with the twin brothers.1. When the twin brothers asked his name, the writer felt ________________.A.surprised B.nervous C.angry D.proud4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.At last the writer changed his name.B.The twins said hello to the writer first.C.The twins also didn’t like the writer’s name.D.One can order a chowder in some restaurants.BHaving a great collection of books at home doesn’t really mean that you are a person who has a passion for literature and reading. It can be a family inheritance(继承)or it can be just to impress people around you about the fact that you are a person of culture. On the other hand, there are many persons who cannot afford to buy books, because some of them are quite expensive, but they usually go to libraries and spend hours reading something that interests them a lot, or just borrow books to read at home. From my point of view, literature is very important in our lives from several points of view. For example, reading is a means of gaining culture and enriching our knowledge in different areas of activities. It can help us have a great imagination and it makes things easier when it comes to making compositions on different themes. It gives you the possibility to speak about science, even if you don’t work in this field, or you can express your opinion about a political aspect, just because you have read something connected to that.Secondly, literature offers us the possibility to enter the world of imagination, and to leave apart the real one for a couple of hours. We come to meet kings and queens many years ago, dream in the world of the rich or imagine how life will be in the future. Sometimes, we identify ourselves with the characters in the stories we read and they can give us some clues to solve our problems and how to react in certain circumstances. To conclude, I would like to say that literature is the perfect means to enrich our culture, toexpress correctly and have a rich vocabulary, to be able to interfere(干涉)in conversations in different fields of interest and to really be considered an erudite person.5. The people who are fond of literature are those that _________.A. go to libraries on weekendsB. have much interest in readingC. keep many books in their studiesD. buy expensive books in the bookstore6. We can learn from the third paragraph that _________.A. we can bring kings and queens back to lifeB. it is very good for us to stay alone for some hoursC. what we read can be useful in our daily lifeD. we can make friends with the people in the stories7. The underlined word “erudite” in the last paragraph probably means_________.A. learnedB. enthusiasticC. hard-workingD. creative8. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A. To tell readers how to read a book.B. To explain the true meaning of reading.C. To advise readers to like reading.D. To tell readers who has the real passion for literature.CAs Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called "transactive memory (交互记忆)"According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.9. The passage begins with two questions to ______.A. introduce the main topicB. show the author's altitudeC. describe how to use the Internet.D. explain how to store information10. What can we learn about the first experiment?A. Sparrow's team typed the information into a computer.B. The two groups remembered the information equally well.C. The first group did not try to remember the formation.D. The second group did not understand the information.11. In transactive memory, people ______.A. keep the information in mindB. change the quantity of informationC. organize information like a computerD. remember how to find the information12. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research?A. We are using memory differently.B. We are becoming more intelligent.C. We have poorer memories than before.D. We need a better way to access information.DItaly is widely considered to be a paradise for shopping. You can find almost all the world’s first-class brands there at reasonable prices. Some excellent purchase options are: clothes for men and women, jewellery, lacework, leather goods, ceramics(陶制品),gold and silver items. And here’s something you should never forget: Foreign tourists acquiring things in Italy can claim a sales tax rebate(回扣),provided that they spend more than 155 Euros(about 1550 yuan)at the same store on the same day. The 10 percent refund(退款)makes the prices more competitive and attractive to lots of customers.Besides this, there are some stores that offer high fashion goods at much lower prices. Italy’s fashion houses do not advertise these stores, some refuse to admit that they exist, but once you know where they are you need never pay high street prices again.Around the centre,Milan, there are quieter towns and suburbs with outlets offering huge discounts(打折)on top brand clothes and accessories. The fashion houses go around conventional retailers(零售商)to sell directly to the public. That gets rid of mark-ups that can account for half the price. But to avoid a reaction from the retailers they tend to keep it quiet ---so quiet that many fashion insiders are ignorant(不知道的)of the bargains on their doorstep. Much of the stock comes from seconds or showroom collections. Discounts of up to 70 percent are common. Most of the outlets are in the triangle between Turin,Milan and Florence. There you can get the best deals on Armani,Gucci and the other big names in fashion. To name just a few, there are Armani factory stores near Como,Dolce & Gabbano stores near Milan,Gucci factory stores near Florence, and Prada stores near Arezzo. When you travel in Italy, never forget to leave one day or two visiting the stores, there are lots of surprise.13 .If a foreign tourist pays 155 Euros for something in the same store in Italy on the same day, heonly needs to pay the store.A.139.5 eurosB.145 eurosC.140 eurosD.150 euros14.What does the underlined word “mark-ups” mean in the text?A. Marks on the fashion.B. Good marks for students who have made great efforts on their studies.C. Marks on top of the fashion-houses signs.D. To put a much higher price on something.15. Which of the following do you think is the best title for this passage?A. Italy--- the World’s Shopping CentreB. Going to a Paradise in ItalyC. Italy--- a Shoppers’ ParadiseD. 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给出的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
A few months ago as I wandered through my parents’ house, the same house I grew up in, I had a sudden, scary realization. When my parents bought the house, in 1982, they were only two years older than I am now. I tried to imagine myself in two years, ready to settle down and buy the house I’d still be living in almost 30 years later.
It seemed ridiculous. On a practical level, ther e’s no way I could afford to buy a house anytime soon. More importantly, I wouldn’t want to. I’m not sure where I’ll be living in two years, or what kind of job I’ll have. And I don’t think I’ll be ready to settle down and stay in one place.
So this is probably the generation gap that divides my friends and me from our parents. When our parents were our age, they’d gotten their education, chosen a career, and were starting to settle into responsible adult lives.
My friends and I –“Generation Y” –s till aren’t sure what we want to do with our lives. Whatever we end up doing, we want to make sure we’re happy doing it. We’d rather take risks first, try out different jobs, and move from one city to another until we find our favorite place. We’d rather s pend our money on travel than put it in a savings account.
This casual attitude toward responsibility has caused some critics to call my generation “arrogant”, “impatient”, and “overprotected”. Some of these complaints have a point. As children。
