The data show that as students have increasingly shouldered theever-rising cost of tuition, they have defected from the study of the humanities and toward applied science and "hard" skills that they bet will lead to employment. In other words, a college education is more and more seen as a means for economic betterment rather than a means for human betterment. This is a trend that is likely to persist and even accelerate.数据显示,随着学生肩负的学费不断增加,他们已从学习人文学科转向他们相信有益于将来就业的应用科学和“硬”技能。

Tell him or her about your new understanding of theneed to remain optimistic.2) The writers of the two texts in this unit convey to us the message that weneed to look at the positive side ofanything that comes to us and that weneed to take an optimistic and positive attitude toward life. 新起点大学英语综合教程2第二单元读后感

新起点大学英语综合教程2第二单元读后感

新起点大学英语综合教程2第二单元读后感In this second unit of New Starting Point College English Integrated Course 2, we explored a variety of topics that revolved around the theme of "Friendship". From reading stories about friendship to discussing the qualities of a good friend, this unit has been both enlightening and thought-provoking.One of the stories that left a lasting impression on me was "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry. It tells the story of a young couple who selflessly sacrifice their most treasured possessions in order to buy Christmas gifts for each other. The story beautifully captures the essence of true friendship and selflessness, demonstrating that material possessions are insignificant when compared to the love and sacrifice of a true friend.Another aspect of this unit that I found particularly intriguing was the discussion on the qualities of a good friend. We identified traits such as honesty, loyalty, and empathy as key characteristics of a good friend. This made me reflect on my own friendships and evaluate how I can be a better friend to those around me.Furthermore, the unit also touched upon the importance of communication in maintaining friendships. Clear and open communication is essential in any relationship, and this unit reinforced the idea that effective communication is key to resolving conflicts and strengthening bonds.Overall, this unit has deepened my understanding of the importance of friendship and the qualities that make a good friend. It has inspired me to not only cherish my existing friendships but also actively work towards being a better friend to those around me. I look forward to applying the lessons learned in this unit to my own life and relationships.。

Write T for true or F for false. Creating spacesJin Hee Park is a student at Stanford University in California. She studies hard, "Of course, I came here for the academics,” she says. But it doesn't hurt that the campus is so beautiful. I walk around sometimes just to relax."Alejandro Vega, a banker in New York City jogs almost every evening after work in Central Park. “I never get bored. The park is so big. I can always find a different pat h with a new view.”Niagara Falls was on Ross Howard's list of places to visit in upstate New York. “The footpaths allow you to get a wonderful view. You can even feel the spray from the falls on your face.”What do these three places--Stanford University, Central Park, and Niagara Falls State Park--all have in common? They were all landscaped by Frederick Law Olmsted. Olmsted (1822--1903) has been called the "father oflandscape architecture."In the 1800s, more and more people were moving to the cities. Some community leaders became worried about the quality of life. They began a beautification campaign. In 1857, a design contest was held for a new park in New York City. Olmsted and his partner, Cavert Vaux, won the contest. Central Park was the finished product---the first landscaped public park in the United States. Today, no trip to New York is complete without a visit to this beautiful park.Later in his life, Olmsted designed landscapes for college campuses, including Stanford University. In the late 1860s, he joined the "Free Niagara" movement. Members of the movement wanted to preserve the beauty of Niagara Falls. Despite opposition and pressures from business to industrialize the area, Olmsted and others resisted. Olmsted designed footpaths to give visitors better views of the falls. In all his work, Olmsted preferred to preserve the natural beauty of an area. Today, there are pressures again to develop Niagara. On Goat Island, an island in Niagara FallsState Park, there are now souvenir shops. There may be signs that say "No Littering," but there is still a lot of trash on the island. Most of the animals have disappeared. What would Frederick Law Olmsted say to all this?Track 3-2-OL-8C. Listen again. Find words in the passage that are related in form to the ones below.Unit 2, Lesson BGlobal ViewpointsMy dream homeJennifer: I want my dream house to be by a lake with a big yard. 大学英语第四版作文第二单元

大学英语第四版作文第二单元In the journey of life, dreams are the guiding stars that illuminate our path, inspiring us to forge ahead with courage and determination. The second unit of the fourth edition of College English, which focuses on the theme of perseverance in the pursuit of dreams, serves as a profound reminder of the importance of persistence and resilience in achieving our goals.Dreams are the aspirations that fuel our ambitions and shape our destinies. They are the dreams that push us to rise above the ordinary, to transcend our limitations, and to become the best versions of ourselves. However, the road to realizing these dreams is often fraught with challenges and obstacles. It requires more than just a fleeting spark of inspiration; it demands a steadfast commitment to the journey, regardless of the difficulties encountered.Perseverance is the key to unlocking the potential of our dreams. It is the steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. In the pursuit of dreams, perseverance manifests in various forms. It is the daily grind of practicing and honing our skills, the unwavering focus on our goals, and the refusal to give up even when faced with setbacks. The stories of successful individuals across various fields are testament to the power of perseverance. From athletes who push themselves to the limit through rigorous training, to scientists who spend years conducting experiments to unlock the secrets of nature, these individuals share a common trait: their unwavering dedication to their dreams. Moreover, perseverance not only helps us achieve our goals but also shapes our character. It builds resilience, teaches us to embrace failure as a stepping stone to success, and cultivates a mindset of growth and continuous learning. In the process of persevering, we learn to adapt, innovate, and find new ways to overcome obstacles. However, perseverance does not mean stubbornly sticking to a single path. It also involves the wisdom of navigating through life's uncertainties and making adjustments when necessary. Sometimes, the path to our dreams may require us to take a detour or even start from scratch. It is in these moments of redirection that perseverance truly shines, asit empowers us to stay the course and continue moving forward. In conclusion, the second unit of the fourth edition of College English underscores the significance of perseverance in the pursuit of dreams. Dreams are the compass that guides us through life, and perseverance is the compass needle that keeps us pointed in the right direction. By cultivating a mindset of perseverance, we can overcome challenges, transform setbacks into opportunities, and ultimately realize our dreams. Let us embrace the power of perseverance and stride confidently towards our goals, knowing that with each step forward, we are bringing our dreams closer to reality.**坚持梦想的力量**在人生旅途中,梦想犹如指引我们前行的明灯,激发我们带着勇气和决心不断前进。

Ⅰ. Suggested Teaching Plan Objectives Students will be able to: 1. understand the main idea (despite his wealth, Sam Walton remains down-home and devoted to his team) and structure of the text; 2. appreciate the use of indirect description in portraying a person; 3. grasp the key language points and grammatical structures in the text; 4. conduct a series of reading, listening, speaking, and writing activities related to the theme of the unit.

Time allotment

1st period 2nd period 3rd period 4th period 5th period Pre-reading; While-reading (text organization) While-reading (text organization; language points) While-reading (language points; synonyms for “down-home”) Post-reading (indirect description) Post-reading; Check on students’ home reading (Text B) Theme-Related Language Learn- ing Tasks

Pre-reading tasks 1. T asks Ss the following questions on the recorded passage: (5 minutes) — What happened to Abraham Lincoln one day? (Working as a shop clerk, he overcharged a customer. Although the sum was insignificant, Lincoln walked a long distance to return the money.) — How is the story related to the theme of the unit — values? (Abraham Lincoln regarded honesty as an important value.) 2. Ss do Cloze B in after-text exercises to learn more about the values of American millionaires. (15 minutes) 3. Rich people I know (15 minutes) 1) Before class, Ss are asked to collect stories, news reports, pictures, books, or even video clips (if relevant equipment is available for showing them in class) of rich people. 2) In class, Ss form groups of three to four to share what they have collected. 3) Groups discuss what values these rich people hold dear. 4) Speakers for several groups report their discussion results to the class. 5) T reminds Ss to keep these values in mind when they study Text A, and see whether Sam Walton cherishes them or not.
