Afternoon tea

Afternoon tea

Afternoon TeaBritain has a colorful traditional culture. Referring to British traditional culture, we may naturally think of British afternoon tea culture. Britain is a tea-loving country, and Britain has a history of 300 years about drinking tea. The British have the habit of drinking tea. When about four in the afternoon, preparing a cup of tea, accompanied by a few delicate dessert, British enjoy a while of escaping mood .The origin of the afternoon tea. In the 17th century, when the Portuguese princess Catherine was married, the Chinese tea was introduced to UK. Since then tea is prevalent in the court. In the 19th century, the British Duchess Annabel Dove, asked servants to prepare bread, butter and tea, nice chat, and she shared the relaxing afternoons. She also invited his friends to share the relaxing afternoons together. From then on, this conduct suddenly became a fashion, forming a British tea culture. The distinction between the afternoon tea and the high tea. Afternoon tea is also called "low tea" (because it was usually taken in the late afternoon) as it is served at a low table. Since this wasn't a meal, but rather like a late afternoon snack meant to stave off hunger, finger foods were the common fare. Tiny, dainty sandwiches, scones and pastries were served with afternoon tea. Finger foods afforded one the opportunity to take a petite bite and easily maintain a conversation. This is most important, as one is not merely taking tea to gain nourishment or satisfy hunger, but to take time to relax, converse and enjoy the company of dear friends. In England, the traditional time for tea was four o'clock or five o'clock in the afternoon and no one stayed after seven o'clock. High tea, a term often confused with afternoon tea, usually takes the place of supper. During the Industrial Revolution, working class families would return home tired and exhausted. The table would be set with dinner foods like meat, bread, butter, potatoes, cheese and of course tea. It was termed "high tea" because it was eaten at a high dining table rather than a low tea table.Low tea was initially used at home, an elegant tea set used to enjoy tea, then gradually evolved into a social tea in order to entertain friends, and then developed various manners, but now the form of it is simplified a lot. Although tea has now beensimplified, the correct way to brew tea , the elegant furnishings to drink tea, and the sumptuous refreshments are considered the tradition of tea handed down. The manners of British afternoon tea. In Britain which is famous for its strict etiquette requirements, afternoon tea gradually develops a wide variety of tea etiquette requirements and habits, and become one of the daily essential aspects in the upper class in UK. The most orthodox tea drinking time was four o'clock in the afternoon. In the Victorian era, men were dressed in the tuxedos, the ladies were in robes. Now at an annual formal afternoon tea in Buckingham Palace, the male guests are still dressed in tuxedos, wear dunce caps and hold an umbrellas; and women wear white dresses, and be sure to wear hats. Usually to show respect for the guests the masters in formal clothing serve the guests personally, and does not ask the maids for help unless they have no choice. In general, the special afternoon tea is Keemun black tea, Darjeeling and Earl Grey, Ceylon tea. If you drink milk tea, you should add milk before you add tea. Enjoy refreshments from the bottom up: the orthodox British afternoon tea snack is loaded with three layers dessert plate, the first layer is put with the sandwich, the second layer traditional British dessert Scone, then the third layer cake and fruit tarts; and then eat back from the bottom again. Early the source of tea almost relied on China's input, The British had a unique love and respect for tea, so they inevitably showed a cautious attitude during the drinking process and subsequently formed the habit of locking the tea cabinet. Appreciate the delicate tea set. Victorian afternoon tea is a comprehensive art, simple but not shabby, gorgeous but not vulgar... Although the time of drinking and dessert (refer to pure British dessert) are the most important part of the orthodox British afternoon tea, but lacking good tea, porcelain, music, and even a good mood, your drinking tea becomes fly in the ointment. Cautious attitude: Traditional Afternoon Tea is second only to informal social dinner, and is very particular about posture posture. You should pick up the cup gently (you must use the thumb and forefinger to hold the cup handle previously, now you can put your finger in the cup ring), send the cup to your mouth. Tea should be drunk slowly with a small mouth. Snacks should be savored. You should whisper in a low voice, and behave with dignified manners. When others speak, you should look atthem horizontally with your eyes gently, which means that you are very concerned about it; when your cell phone rings, and if somebody is just talking, you shouldn't rudely interrupt him and should say sorry to him in the conversation gaps and so on.Trilogy of enjoying afternoon tea.First-step: enjoy a delicious dessert. Scend-step: appreciate the delicate tea set. Third-step:taste the tea. Of course, no matter how sumptuous desserts, and regardless of how delicate tea set, afternoon tea is inseparable from a "tea", which shows that "tea" is the absolute protagonist. The dedicated afternoon tea is divided into Darjeeling, Earl Grey tea, Ceylon tea, and other types. People usually direct brew tea, then use tea strainers to filter tea leaves so that they can get the drinking tea. When the hot water is poured down, through the transparent glass teapot, you can see the tea tip blooming in the water slowly. The most beautiful tea is rose tea, looking at the tiny rose petals swaying and flying upward in the water, your emotions are also flying up. The combination of black tea with milk is like an elegant aristocracy encounter a celebrity gentleman. Whether a small or a large mouth sip,in the cold winter, a cup of hot tea is undoubtedly a recipe for warm, smoothly sliding from the tongue to the stomach in a moment, a faint sweet still leaving in the mouth after a long time, and leaving people aftertaste a lot. The afternoon dazzling sunshine irradiate your slightly-closed eyelids, making you feel a while of trance, as if the fugue in Thames with the microwave, unwilling to wake up.The effectiveness of afternoon tea. Afternoon tea can replenish energy promptly. Facing the high efficient and fast-paced modern society, office workers eat too little or too hasty in lunch. A nutritionally balanced afternoon tea can not only help people get rid of fatigue, but also help restore strength, and can also help people maintain energy until dusk, and then make dinner relatively light, which contribute to developing a perfect diet. In addition, experiments show that tea can also enhance memory and resilience. People who have the habit of drinking afternoon tea get a 15% to 20% higher score than the average score of others in the memory and resilience. What's more, osteoporosis can be avoided by drinking tea often. In afternoon tea, Tea's effect on human health s can not be ignored. Black tea has a mild character and a mellow flavor. Above all, it help build strong bones. Tea is rich in flavonoids, and can reducethe risk of osteoporosis in women.Secondly, drinking tea can prevent influenza, myocardial infarction, stroke and skin diseases. The study found that regular consumption of black tea to gargle or directly drinking it plays an important role in the prevention of influenza.Black tea is rich in trace elements potassium, after brewing, 70% of potassium dissolved in tea, which can enhance cardiac blood circulation, and can reduce the consumption of calcium in the body. For those people who drink five cups of black tea every day, the incidence of risking stroke is 69% lower than those who do not drink tea. Besides, black tea' effects is better than green tea's in the prevention of skin cancer because it has theaflavins. The traditional afternoon tea usually contains a teapot of tea several teacups and pastries. There are different types of pastries: a selection of dainty sandwiches, scones served with clotted cream and preserves, teacakes etc. English tea is mainly from India or Ceylon, which was originally transported by the East India Company. Today, afternoon tea has been simplified because of the change of lifestyle. People use tea bags instead of infusing tea leaves. Pastries are no longer as various and sophisticated as that of long time ago. They usually are some pieces of biscuits or cakes. But if you want to experience a real English afternoon tea, I would advise you to go to Devonshire, where good clotted cream and famous cream tea are produced. The tea consists of cups of hot and sweet tea served in china teacups and scones, strawberry jam as well as the fine clotted cream_the vital ingredient of cream tea. You may indulge yourself for a whole afternoon to enjoy the best tradition. As William Gladstone said: “If you are cold, tea will warm you. If you are too heated, it will cool you. If you are depressed, it will cheer you. If you are exhausted, it will calm you.”Title: Afternoon Tea学院:材料与冶金学院班级:英美概况1班姓名:王长乐学号:1300633。

According to legend, one of queen victoria’s (1819-1901) ladies-in-waiting, Anna Maria Stanhope (1783-1857), known as the duchess of bedford, is credited as the creator of afternoon teatime. Because the noon meal had become lighter, the duchess suffered from “A Sinking Feeling” at around four o’clock in the afternoon. At first, the duchess had her servants provide her a pot of tea and some breadstuffs. Adopting the european tea service format, she invited friends to join her for an afternoon meal at five o’clock in her rooms at belvoir castle. The menu centred around small cakes, bread and butter sandwiches, assorted sweets, and, of course, tea. This summer practice proved so popular that the duchess continued it when she returned to London, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for “Tea and a walk in the fields.”The practice of inviting friends to come for tea in the afternoon was quickly picked up by other social hostesses. Mini Macaron with Two Flavour 英式葡萄司康British Raisin Scone甜 點 Sweets。

Although the tradition of drinking tea dates back to more than 3,000 B.C. in China, it was not until the mid 17th century in the UK that appeared the concept of "afternoon tea". The dinner time then was popularly late at 8 pm, so a Duchess developed a habit of inviting Mends to enjoy some cakes at 4 pm in the afternoon. Quickly, afternoon tea became a fashionable social event. With the cultural exchanges between the east and the west deepening, this British tradition was gradually in-traduced into China. Now, afternoon tea is increasingly popular in China, especially in the area ol Guangdong and Fijian provinces.

Tea has been a popular beverage in England since the17th century, when it was introduced by Catherine of Braganza, the queen consort of King Charles II. However, it was not until the 19th century that tea became a staple of British culture, thanks to the development of tea plantations in India and the reduction of its price. This led to the creation of the tradition of afternoon tea, which is still popular today.
