Riders have printed nearly 20,000 short stories and poems since the program was launched last March. Some are classic short stories, and some are new original works.Trost also wants to introduce local writers to local riders. “We wanted to do something where we do a call to artists in the Bay Area to submit stories for a contest,” Trost says. “And as of right now, we’ve received about 120 submissions. The winning stories would go into our kiosk and then you would be a published artist.”Ridership on transit (交通) systems across the country has been down the past half century,so could short stories save transit?Trost thinks so.“At the end of the day all transit agencies right now are doing everything they can to improve the rider experience. So I absolutely think we will get more riders just because of short stories,” she says. And you’ll never be without something to read.4.Why did BART start the kiosk program?A.To promote the local culture.B.To discourage phone use.C.To meet passengers’ needs.D.To reduce its running costs.5.How are the stories categorized in the kiosk?A.By popularity.B.By length.C.By theme.D.By language.6.What has Trost been doing recently?A.Organizing a story contest.B.Doing a survey of customers.C.Choosing a print publisher.D.Conducting interviews with artists. 7.What is Trost’s opinion about BART’s future?A.It will close down.B.Its profits will decline.C.It will expand nationwide.D.Its ridership will increase. The high intelligence levels of orangutans (红毛猩猩) have long been recognised, partly due to their practical skills such as using tools to crack nuts and search for insects. But new research suggests the primate (灵长动物) has another handy skill: applying medicinal herbs intentionally to an open wound.A male Sumatran orangutan known as Rakus was observed by the research team with a fresh facial wound in June 2022. Three days later, Rakus was witnessed feeding on the stem and leaves of a plant. Thirteen minutes after Rakus had started feeding on it, he began chewing the leaves without swallowing them, then used his fingers to apply the resulting juice directly on to his facial wound. He repeated this behavior for seven minutes and at last fully covered the wound with the chewed leaves. He then continued feeding on the plant for 30 minutes. Over the following days, there were no signs of infection. The wound closed within five days and was healed, withonly a faint scar remaining after one month. It is not the first time wild primate species have been spotted self-medicating: among other examples, Bornean orangutans have been seen rubbing their arms and legs with chewed leaves from a plant used by humans to treat sore muscles, while chimpanzees have been recorded chewing plants known to treat worm infections and applying insects to wounds. However, the new discovery is the first time a wild animal has been observed treating open wounds with a substance known to have medicinal properties. “In the chimpanzee case they used insects and unfortunately it was never found out whether these insects really promote wound healing. Whereas in our case, the orangutan used the plant, and this plant has known medical properties,” said Dr Caroline Schuppli, senior author of the research.Rakus’s goal-oriented behavior and the medicinal properties of his chosen treatment offer insight into the origins of human wound care-the treatment of which was first mentioned in a medical manuscript dating to 2200BC.“It definitely shows that these basic cognitive capacities that you need to come up with a behaviour like this were present at the time of our last common ancestor most likely,” said Schuppli. It remains unclear whether Rakus figured the process out for himself or learned it from another orangutan, although it has not been seen in any other individual.8.How did the team conduct their research?A.By analyzing previous records.B.By tracking the research object.C.By quoting others’ findings.D.By categorizing qualities of primates. 9.What sets this new case apart from the previous ones?A.The primate’s awareness of herb selection.B.The locations of the wild primates.C.The sizes of the application range.D.The outcome of the treatment.10.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A.Supporting evidence for the research results.B.Potential significance of the research findings.C.A further explanation of the research summary.D.A reasonable doubt about the research process.11.What will the follow-up study focus on?A.The origin of Rakus’ intentional self-medication.B.Different medicinal plants used by wild primates.C.Active wound treatment s shared by humans and primatesD.The possible influence from Rakus’ family.Heat waves are becoming more common in parts of the United States — and that means more people running their air conditioners for longer. But those air conditioners can make the problem worse, giving off greenhouse gases as they work that contribute heavily to climate change.SkyCool Systems is trying to break that cycle, using technology that promises to offer buildings an alternative means to cool down in a similar way to how the planet cools itself. “Our planet naturally cools itself by sending heat out in the form of infrared light (红外线) or radiation,” said Eli Goldstein, SkyCool’s cofounder and CEO. “We do this through rooftop panels, which look like solar panels but actually do the opposite, reflecting 97% of the sunlight that hits them and cooling the surface below,” said Goldstein.SkyCool’s model involves fixing a network of pipes below those panels. These pipes are filled with water, which is kept cool by the panels and then flows into an air conditioning system. This process is designed to take pressure off the system’s cooling mechanism. And because the panels cool naturally and don’t need external power to function, it helps the entire system use less electricity.A Grocery Outlet store in California, which has been using SkyCool’s system since last year, says it saw a marked drop in its electrical bills. Jesus Valenzuela, the store manager, estimates that the panels have saved his store roughly $3,000 a month. But perhaps the biggest barrier to making the technology ubiquitous (无处不在的) is its relatively high cost. Increasing production could help bring the cost down, Goldstein said, particularly for developing countries in Asia and Africa where SkyCool hopes to eventually expand. For now, the company is focused on commercial applications of the technology, though it hopes to start setting up panels on the roofs of individual homes. “We’re just excited to be able to use this new technology for good,” Goldstein said.12.How did Goldstein explain the way their rooftop panels work?A.By citing an expert’s words.B.By making comparisons.C.By analyzing cause and effect.D.By describing the process in detail. 13.What is the function of the pipes in SkyCool’s model?A.To store cold water to help cool the panels.B.To help ease the water pressure of the air conditioning.C.To power the panels by making use of flowing water.D.To feed cold water into the air conditioning system.14.How might Jesus V alenzuela view SkyCool’s system?A.It’s pretty effective.B.It has increased sales for his store.C.It will go out of style quickly.D.It will cost too much to set up.15.What does SkyCool expect of its system?A.It’ll bring in a good profit for the company.B.It’ll gain popularity in developedcountries.C.It’ll take the place of air conditioners.D.It’ll be accessible to common households.Overtourism Is For Real: How Can You Help?Travel promotes understanding, expands our minds, makes us better people, and boosts local economies and communities, but the rapid growth of travel has led to overtourism in certain regions and destinations. 16 Certainly not. The loss of what travel offers would be unacceptable in today’s world. Here are some tips on making wise decisions to minimize pressure on the places we visit and improve our experience.●Choose mindfully. Overvisited destinations are that way for a reason: they’re special. With so many online posts featuring the same places, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out. Go somewhere only when the landscape, culture or food deeply draws you. 17●Get creative. The best way to ease pressure on over-touristed destinations is to go somewhere else. Though overtourism is described as a problem affecting the entire world, it’s actually concentrated to a small number of extremely popular spots. That means you have tons of less-visited options to choose from. 18 Why not try a regional alternative or check out a popular destination’s lesser-known sights?● 19 Minimize impact and maximize experience by skipping major holidays or rush hour. You’ll compete with fewer tourists, save money, experience a different side of a popularplace, and boost the economy when tourism is traditionally slower.Visiting a place that others call home is a privilege (荣幸). Do your part to preserve what makes a destination special in the first place. 20 You may be amazed how much closer you’ll feel to the people there.A.Visit during off-peak times.B.So, should we stop traveling?C.Travel for you and no one else.D.Can overtourism be avoided then?E.You can still find relatively undiscovered places.F.You’ll find yourself virtually alone, or close to it.G.Consider giving back to the communities you’re visiting.二、完形填空Orange chicken, salt and pepper chips, fried rice... Although it’ll take weeks to harvest all of their cabbage, farmers in a town in Pingdu, Shandong province, have started preparing to sell the vegetables to overseas markets.Li Wenbin, who runs a vegetable trading business in the town of Renzhao, said his fresh vegetable sales to overseas markets mainly in Japan, South Korea and Malaysia doubled to 20,000 metric tons last year due to high demand for kimchi, a dietary staple in South Korea.South Korea suffered from an abnormally long rainy season and three typhoons last year that damaged large amounts of Chinese cabbage, the major ingredient(原料) for kimchi, creating high demand for the vegetable.“Based on the current performance of vegetable exports in parts of southern China, such as in Fujian province, we predict this year’s business won’t be sad,” said Li, adding that he is confident because vegetables from Renzhao are competitive in terms of quality and price.Around 120 kilometers west of Pingdu, vegetable traders in Shouguang, Weifang, one of the country’s major vegetable production bases, have started exporting this year’s carrots. Pei Shengji, manager of Zhonglong Food, headquartered in Shouguang, said the harvesting of the company’s 65-hectare carrot growing base in Fujian is in full swing. All of the carrots will be processed and shipped to overseas markets. What’s more, Shandong province is developing seeds to meet diverse needs for quality crops, which helps to support the agricultural sector. “The seed developed domestically brings rich harvests. The Chinese cabbage tastes good and is good for being preserved,” he said. Besides, it’s much cheaper than foreign seeds.Unlike Li, who can choose quality Chinese cabbage seeds developed in China, Pei has to spend more buying foreign seeds because there are no domestically developed carrot seeds available. According to Weifang’s five-year plan, the seeds of medium-and high-end vegetables such as bell peppers, broccoli and carrots will be researched and developed.1. Social media is taking over our lives: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and now, TikTok. These social media platforms have transformed from a way to stay connected to an industry where even kids can make money off their posts. While this may seem like another opportunistic innovation, it’s really full of hidden false realities. The median income (中位收入) recorded in the United States of America was about $63,000 in 2018. TikTokers can make anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 for a TikTok brand partnership, and TikTokers with over a million followers can make up to $30,000 a month — $360,000 a year. They are making more than the average person trying to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads, simply by posting a 15-second video. This is mad in more ways than one. Not only is it an overpaid “job”, it promotes undeserved admiration from viewers and a false sense of reality. Many of these famous TikTokers are still teens, and the effects of fame at such an early stage in life might cause issues later in life, such as mental illness. Teens between the ages of 13 and 17 make up 27% of TikTok viewers, who can be easily influenced by what they are watching. They can put a false sense of self-value into who they look up to and what they represent: money, fame, being considered conventionally attractive. While TikTok has become a great tool for marketing, it’s important to understand how this content affects young viewers. If we’re constantly consuming content that hsows us all we need to do to be successful is be conventionally attractive and post a 15-second video featuring a new dance, it will challenge our knowledge of what really makes someone successful and will in turn affect our individual work ethics (伦理). What about the people who miss birthdays and family holidays due to their jobs and aren’t getting paid nearly as much as these TikTokers?Richard Colyer, president and creator of Metaphor, Inc., had his own view on this issue.“It sounds great that kids can make money for doing the latest dance moves in a 15-second video, but we should feed the minds of kids and not just their bank accounts. TikTok can be great if used properly. Money alone is not good, technology alone is not good and connectedness can be bad if it’s only online.”Again, as a fellow consumer of TikTok, I do enjoy the app when I have some time to kill and need a good laugh. I’m not against someone making a living on entertainment, but what does getting famous of a 15-second video teach young people?1. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to?A.Social networking.B.Making money on social media.C.A job offered by TikTok.D.Staying connected to the Internet.2. Which is the possible influence of TikTok on its young users?A.They tend to live an adult life too soon.B.They are forced to pay for certain services.C.They may abandon other social media.D.They are likely to develop false values.3. What can we infer from Richard Colyer’s comments?A.TikTok can be a positive influence if teens employ it wisely.B.Young TikTokers should be banned form making money.C.It is better to involve education on investment in TikTok videos.D.Contents of videos need checking before their release online.4. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A.Say No to TikTok.B.Join Young TikTokersC.TikTok — A Mine of Money D.A Job vs An Entertainment4. The common cuttlefish is just as smart as a human child when it comes to a certain cognitive test, according to a new research. When given the sweet test, which tests a person’s ability to understand delayed satisfaction, cuttlefish passed with flying colors. In the classic psychological experiment, a child is given a sweet with the instructions that if they can resist eating the sweet treat for 15 minutes, they’ll be given another and allowed to eat both.“Cuttlefish in the present study were all able to wait for the better reward and tolerated delays for up to 50-130 seconds, which is comparable to what we see in some clever animals such as monkeys, crows and parrots,” said lead author Alexandra Schnell. The researchers found the cuttlefish that delayed satisfaction for longer had better learning performance.Six common cuttlefish were placed in a tank with two clear boxes. One had a live grass shrimp — their favorite food and the other had a less appetizing shrimp. Researchers painted symbols on the doors. Triangle is for a delayed opening, and circle is for opening straight away. When presented with their favourite food behind the triangle door, all the cuttlefish chose to wait. The study also tested the cuttlefish’s ability to learn, by switching the symbols on the doors and what they meant. The cuttlefish that learnt to adapt to the changes fastest also scored the longest delayed satisfaction scores. While researchers don’t know the exact reasons for their intelligence, they suspect it’s something to do with the way of gathering food.“Cuttlefish spend most of their time hiding, sitting and waiting, having short dining time. They don’t hide when they dine, so they are exposed to their enemies. We assume that delayed satisfaction may have evolved as a byproduct of this, so the cuttlefish can benefit by waiting to choose better quality food.” said Schnell.1. Why is the classic psychological experiment mentioned in Paragraph 2?A.To show children’s ability to tolerate.B.To attach importance to the researchers.C.To state children prefer to have sweets.D.To prove cuttlefish are highly intelligent.2. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?A.Why the researchers design the test.B.How the experiment is carried out.C.How the cuttlefish recognize shapes.D.What the cuttlefish’s favorite food is.3. The cuttlefish’s intelligence may be a result of .A.the walls having ears.B.letting the cat out of the bag.C.the survival of the fittest.D.putting the cart before the horse.4. Where is the passage most likely from?A.A newspaper on science.B.A website on table manners.C.A brochure on education.D.A magazine on fashion design.
