Robert Hooke was all these and more. Some say he was the greatest experimental scientist of the 17th century. In thecourse of his work, he cooperated with famous men of science like Isaac Newton, and the great architect Christopher Wren.Hooke's early education began at home, under the guidance of his father. He entered Westminster School and from there he went to Oxford, where he came in contact with some of the best scientists in England. Hooke impressed them with his skills at designing experiments and inventing instruments. In 1662, he was named Curator of Experiments at the newly formed Royal Society of London — meaning that he was responsible for demonstrating (展示) new experiments at the society's weekly meetings. Hooke accepted the job, even though he knew that the society had no money to pay him!Watching living things through a microscope was one of his favourite pastimes. He invented a compound microscope for this purpose. One day while observing a cork (软木塞) under a microscope, he saw honeycomb-like structures. There were cells —the smallest units of life. In fact, it was Hooke who invented the term “cell” as the box-like cells of the cork reminded him of the cells of some place.Another achievement of Hooke's was his book Micrographia, which introduced the enormous potential of the microscope. It contains fascinating drawings of the things he saw under the microscope. The book also includes, among other things, ideas on gravity, light and combustion (燃烧) that may have helped scientists like Newton when they were developing their own theories on these phenomena.Hooke made a valuable contribution to astronomy, too. A crater (坑) on the moon is named after him in honour of his services to this branch of science.1.Why did Hooke accept the job as Curator of Experiments?A.He was good at designing experiments.B.His family needed his support.C.He wanted to please the famous scientists in England.D.His parents couldn't afford his education.2.What does the underlined word “pastimes” in Paragraph 3 mean?A.Jobs. B.Experiments.C.Hobbies. D.Structures.3.What can we learn from the text?A.Hooke went to Oxford in 1662.B.Hooke was well paid in the Royal Society of London.C.Hooke made a contribution to medicine.D.Hooke's book Micrographia might have helped Newton.4.What is the last paragraph to prove?A.Hooke was the greatest experimental scientist of the 17th century.B.Hooke was good at making discoveries.C.Hooke's contributions were not limited to one field.D.Hooke was one of the greatest astronomers.BParents often put their own relationship on the back burner to concentrate on their children, but a new study shows that when spouses (配偶) love each other, their children stay in school longer and marry later in life.Research about how the affection between parents shapes their children's long-term life outcomes is rare because the data demands are high. This study uses unique data from families in Nepal to provide new evidence. The study, co-authored by researchers at the University of Michigan and McGill University in Quebec, was published in the journal Demography.“In this study, we see that parents' emotional connection to each ot her affects child growth so much that it shapes their children's future,” said coauthor and UM Institute for Social Research researcher William Axinn. “The fact that we found these kinds of things in Nepal moves us to step closer to evidence that these things are universal.”The study uses data from the Chitwan Valley Family Study in Nepal. The survey was launched in 1995, and collected information from 151 neighborhoods in the Western Chitwan Valley. Married couples were interviewed at the same time but separately, and were asked to assess the level of affection they had for their partner. The spouses answered “How much do you love your husband/wife, very much, some, a little, or not at all?”The researchers then followed the children of these parents for 12 years to document their education and marital (婚姻的) behavior. They found that the children of the parents who reported they loved each other either “some” or “very much” stayed in school longer and married later.“Family isn't just another institution. It's not like a school. It is this place where we also have emotions and feelings,” said lead author Sarah Brauner-Otto, director of the Centre on Population Dynamics at McGill University. The researchers say that their next important question will be to identify why parental love impacts children in this way.5.Why is the research rarely done about the influence of parents' love on children's lives?A.Because few scientists show passion.B.Because the data are demanding.C.Because evidence is hard to collect.D.Because parents sometimes don't tell the truth.6.What does the underlined word “universal” in the th ird Paragraph mean?A.Reasonable. B.Scientific.C.Worldwide. D.Acceptable.7.What can be learned about the study from Paragraph 4?A.It started in the 19th century.B.It used information from 151 western countries.C.Couples were interviewed together.D.Couples needed to make an assessment of their closeness degree.8.Which of the following will Sarah Brauner-Otto agree with?A.Family is like a school.B.Family really matters.C.Home is the best place.D.All happy families are alike.Ⅱ.完形填空A New York woman is earning plenty of praise online after she wrote a message offering to help her elderly neighbors.Maggie Connolly, who lives in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens neighborhood, __1__ her handwritten letter __2__ several grocery stores in her community were short of supplies, according to Fox News. The letter, which is __3__ to “elderly neighbors and those with poor health”,includes Connolly's email address and an offer to help those __4__ people.Connolly's neighbor reposted an image of the letter, after which it was __5__ by several popular online accounts. When someone we know gets the flu virus, we expect them to be very careful not to pass it on to others. Doctors and nurses working with flu patients also need to protect themselves from the virus. But what is the best way to do this? This is the question that flu expert Professor Jonathan Van-Tam at Nottingham University is trying to answer. He wants to find out how flu is transmitted, so that he can stop doctors and nurses getting sick.Van-Tam explains their method, “There are 41 volunteers in my experiment. Some healthy volunteers are made to get flu first. When they show symptoms (症状), other volunteers, usually called recipients (接受者), enter the house. Everyone lives together in the small space for four days. Some of the recipients wear face masks, and wash their hands every 15 minutes, but some have no protection. In this way we can study who catches the flu and which ways of transmitting flu are important. During the four days when they are in contact with the virus, and for the ten days after that, the flu recipients are checked regularly.”The experiment is not simple and it is very expensive. It is difficult to design correctly, and it is also difficult to plan and carry out. Just one study like this takes about 18 months to organize and needs hundreds of people working on it. But Van-Tam believes it is worth because the results will help to decide what type of protection is needed for people working in hospitals with large numbers of flu patients around the world. And perhaps it could reduce the number of deaths from flu each year.8. Which word can replace the underlined word “transmitted” in Paragraph 1?A. Solved.B. Passed.C. Formed.D. Stopped.9. What is the main purpose of this study?A. To test the medicines for people who develop serious flu.B. To find the best way to protect doctors and nurses from the flu.C. The experiment is neither simple nor expensive.C. Recipients were divided into at least 2 groups to perform the experiment.D. Wearing masks was the best way to protect people from getting flu.二、(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

D.Beneficial.6.How did Ogodo probably think of her physics classes in high school?A.They were inspiring.B.They weren't useful.C.They weren't appealing.D.They were challenging.7.What differences did the teachers make in their classes after the training?A.They became more self-centered.B.They got students more involved in class.C.They ignored conceptual learning techniques.D.They tried their best to help students pass exams.CTwo years ago, SpaceX surprised the world by landing its reusable booster engine (助推发动机)— the most costly part of the rocket used to power spacecraft (航天器) into low orbit — on an driverless ship in the Atlantic Ocean. Now, Californiabased company Rocket Lab has an even more aggressive idea to catch the returning booster in midair!Rocket Lab's decision to avoid the vertical landing used by SpaceX results from its business model to keep its Electron rockets small and cost-effective.Standing just 17 meters tall, they are designed to deliver goods weighing about just 225 kilograms for a mere D|S5 million a lift-off.“We're not in the business of building medium-sized launch (发射) vehicles,”Peter Beck said.“We're in the business of building small launch vehicles for customers wanting to get on orbit frequently.”Similar to other rockets, the Electron rocket splits into two parts once it reaches outer space. While the top part, carrying the goods, continues on to its final destination, the booster engine quickly falls back to the Earth.During the journey, the extreme friction with air can make the engine burned. The company imagines sending parachutes to quickly slow down the booster engine's super-fast speed upon its re-entry into the atmosphere.Once it slows down to a reasonable speed, a helicopter will catch the booster engine from midair and carry it back to land. The idea, still in the concept stage, will be closer to a reality during the Electron rocket's next launch. The company will not attempt to recover the booster engine on this flight.“We're doing basically everything except really using parachutes this time,”Beck said.“Engineers will monitorthe first stage as the booster engine reenters, testing the parachute's ability to guide its falling.”Rocket Lab is not the only service provider hoping to catch its booster engines in midair. To attract more customers, Coloradobased United Launch Alliance plans to first use a kind of machine to slow down its booster engines upon reentry, before placing a parachute and helicopter to catch them.8.What aggressive idea has Rocket Lab put forward?A.To much improve the booster engine.B.To recover the booster engine in midair.C.To work with SpaceX in space exploration.D.To make helicopters send aircraft into space.9.Why does Rocket Lab avoid the vertical landing?A.Because it targets customers different from SpaceX's.B.Because it finds vertical landing fit for Electron rockets.C.Because it thinks vertical landing quite costly.D.Because it intends to produce mediumsized rockets.10.What's the parachute intended to do by Rocket Lab?A.Help passengers land safely.B.Better observe rockets.C.Slow down helicopters.D.Protect the booster engine.11.The example of United Launch Alliance shows that .A.it may work together with Rocket LabB.the market for rocket recovery is smallC.Rocket Lab may meet with a tough competitorD.there are many challenges in space explorationDFactories in Tianjin are producing over 80 million bicycles annually, with its production worldwide growing much faster than that of automobiles. In 1968, we produced about the same number of bikes and cars —today we make two and a half times as many bicycles.Cycling enthusiasts cheer for this comeback, while feeling sad about the terrible state of cycling infrastructure (基础设施) in most countries. If you uncover the surface, however, you will find great differences in the use of bicycles and the identity of cyclists from country to country. In China and India, the former Empires of Bicycling, most citizens are crazy about motorized vehicles and press for the removal of cycle lanes to make room for more cars.In contrast, in most Western countries, there are calls for morebicycle lanes. There is a need, therefore, to look more critically at this resurrection (复兴) of the bicycle. It is used in multiple ways and some of its personalities are unfriendly. It is, for instance, used both for work and for play.Indeed, much of the recent rise of cycling treats bicycles as entertainment machines rather than transportation tools. Many cycle races use numerous vehicles to transport bicycles to a starting point, but there is not much evidence that this converts the riders into everyday cyclists. The confrontational (易引起冲突的) character of the bicycle has actually been with us almost from day one.The walking machines that populated the streets of London in 1819 faced pressure from pedestrians to be banned from the pavements, while cab drivers wanted them to be excluded from the roadways. So from the beginning, a cyclist's right to the road has been a huge struggle. The obvious solution is to develop good cycling routes separated from motorized traffic and available for both entertainment and transportation cycling. They cost, but far less than vehicular roadways do, and the health benefits of cycling more than compensate for these costs.12.What's the current situation of bicycle production?A.It is increasing in large numbers.B.It is faced with much disapproval.C.It goes hand in hand with car production.D.It makes people concerned about the traffic.13.According to the text, what is most Chinese and Indian people's attitude towards bicycles?A.Worrying.B.Negative.C.Welcoming. D.Indifferent.14.What was it like in London in 1819?A.Cyclists didn't have enough right to the road.B.People could drive anywhere on the road.C.Bikes were forbidden on the pavements.D.Cars became quite popular.15.What is mainly talked about in the text?A.Measures for reducing traffic jams.B.Ways to make bicycles popular.C.Bicycle or car, which is better?D.The resurrection of bicycles.Ⅱ.阅读七选五Having depression makes a person lose interest in nearly all the things he used to like.Whenyou have a friend that's going through depression, you're probably worried about him. 16 Here is some advice about motivating someone who is struggling with depression.Be their emotional support.People with depression have a tendency to overthink and this is especially true for late nights. 17 When they're talking badly about themselves and saying that nobody loves them, remind them that you're there to love them.18 When you advise them to do something, it shouldn't be something that you're making them do.People with depression never want to be forced to do things outside of their comfort zone.Instead, empathize (产生共鸣) with what they're going through and make them feel like what you are advising them to do is just an option.Be yourself. You shouldn't have to act differently around them. This isn't going to motivate them to make progress.Rather, stay true to whom you are while still being empathetic to their emotions. 19Ask them to hang out.Even if there's a probability that they're going to say no, you should still ask them to hang out with you.Even the thought that you ask them out is going to lift their spirits. 20 It also lets them feel loved and normal.A.Don't push them to do things.B.Please do something special for them.C.The best way to motivate them is to be there for them.D.This invitation lets them know you still want to stay with them.E.It does motivate them as long as you stay comfortably with them.F.You may want to do something to take this kind of burden off his shoulders.G.It is really hard for them to walk out of their house and make an appointment with you.外研版(2019)高中英语必修第二册Unit 3 同步练习题答案版Ⅰ.阅读理解AHarvard student guides lead Highlights Tours and Quick Stops, available during the fall and spring semesters, except during holidays, winter sessions, and breaks.Fall tours begin on Friday, September 6, and run through Wednesday, November 27.Spring tours start on Friday, January 31, through Friday, March 13 and then from Wednesday, March 25 through Wednesday, April 29.Tours may also be offered:in French and Chinese besides English.Highlights ToursFridays, 12:30 pmSaturdays, 2:00 pmSundays, 2:00 pmVisit towering Native American totem (图腾) poles and precious artifacts of the ancient world.See life-size casts of Maya monuments and exhibitions such as Wiyohpiyata which is about the 19th-century warrior art, and DiggLng Veritas, which explores the history of Harvard. The themes of the exhibition vary every two days.Visit the museum near the fountain.Tours last 45 minutes, and museum admission is free. For groups of 6 or more, please reserve a scheduled group tour for the day and time of your choice by contacting reservations at 617-495-3216.Each guide may lead a maximum of 20 people per tour. These tours are offered to people of college age or older.Groups with younger people may reserve K-12 school programs through reservations.Quick StopsWednesdays, 3:30 pmSundays,11:30 amLet a Harvard student help you focus on a few special objects in the galleries. Each Quick Stop lasts about 25 minutes and offers replica(复制品) objects to handle while you are engaged in lively conversations.Tell us what the exhibits show you.Topics change daily and there is no age limit, but children between six and ten travelling with adults are free of charge. For more information please visit https://www.har v .语篇解读:本文是一篇应用文。
