At home, my parents are always yelling at me and my brother to shut off lights in rooms we aren't using. We are wasting so much electricity that comes from polluting power plants. And sometimes in the summer when it gets really hot, we have to set the AC super low which I know wastes a ton of energy.Parks & green spaces disappearing. It seems like every time a new store or apartment building goes up, it replaces a grassyarea or trees that wildlife lived in. We had this one park near my house with a cool hiking trail and little creek that me and my friends loved to explore and catch crayfish in. But then they knocked it all down to build some fancy new condos. We don't have many green spaces left for kids to play and explore nature. It makes me sad to see the animals' homes destroyed too.Those are the biggest environmental problems I notice in our city, Mr. Mayor. I know I'm just a kid, but I really hope you can help fix these issues. Here are some ideas I have based on what I've learned in school:Start a big anti-litter campaign with TV ads and posters reminding people not to litter and to pick up trash they see. Maybe we could have regular community clean-up days. We could also put more trash and recycling bins throughout the city to give people proper places to dispose of things.Encourage more people to walk, bike, carpool, or use public transportation instead of driving. You could close some streets to vehicles or build more bike lanes to make it safer. We could also get more buses and trains running. Idling pollution from vehicles is so bad!Make recycling easier by providing big recycling bins to every home and business, just like the trash bins. Maybe therecould be a recycling center on every few blocks so people don't have to drive far. Schools should also get much bigger recycling bins.Start an energy-saving program that teaches people simple tips to conserve. For example, we could put reminders above light switches to turn off lights when leaving rooms. Same for shutting off computers and heating/AC when not needed. The city could also switch all lighting to LED bulbs which use way less energy. We could look into more solar and wind power too instead of coal/gas plants.Protect green spaces and habitats for plants and animals. Maybe have a rule that any new construction has to leave a certain percentage as untouched wildlife areas or parks. We could also plant more trees along streets to provide shade and homes for squirrels, birds, etc.Those are just some ideas I have to help make our city more environmentally friendly! I really think with some smart changes, we could make a huge difference in preserving nature, saving resources, and reducing waste and pollution.
