My father was a man of few words. Did anyone call?‖ His answer, of course, was simply, ―Yes.‖ I required for a more accurate description of the caller. His answer: ―A boy.‖ Since I had met two guys that day, this did not help me. I ran to my room in tears.Knowing my dad’s dislike of language in general and his fondness for briefness, it surprised me to hear that he was going to teach the eleven-year-old boys’ Sunday school class. He did so for not one, but many years. I always wondered if he actually said anything, or if they all just sat in their chairs and stared at each other. Do you ever stop to wonder why you’re going?Relax. You’re making the right decision. First of all, you’ll discover what interests you by taking courses in many subjects. For example, it’s hard to decide if you want to be a painter if you’ve never painted any pictures; once you’re in a drawing-room on campus, you’ll know one way or the other. College is also a lot of fun —a fter you graduate, you’ll be working every weekday for 50 or so years. And remember that college graduates earn about twice the income of those who never attended college.Finding the right college can be difficult. Fortunately, Johnson Review is here to help you every step of the way.* Researching Schools. To us, the most important decision you’ll make is to choose the school that really fits you best — not the one that is the most competitive or has the best-equipped rooms.* Applying to School. On J , you’ll find hundreds of actual college applications (申请) and links to many more.* Raising Your Scores. American College Test is one of the most important parts of the admissions (录取) course. It’s not the most important, though, and not everyone needs to preparefor the best. But, if you think you can do better, find the right course for better scores.* Paying for School. Most families need financial aid for the high cost of college. The problem is that financial aid seems difficult to get and many families get caught up in the price of college rather than learning the ways to get financial aid. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new or anxious situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.For example, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He probably isn’t sure how it will all work out, but at least he tries. And, if he can’t make things work out right, he doesn’t feel ashamed that he fails; he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook(人生观) on life, special feeling about life, and knows how he fits into it.If you look at children, you’ll see great difference between what we call “bright” children and “not bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amounts of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out more about life — he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream–world; he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.4. This passage mainly tells us that intelligence is the ability_________ .A. to do well in schoolB. to behave immediatelyC. to know what to doD. to deal with life5. In the author’s opinion the biggest difference between “bright” children and“not bright” children lies in ____.A. the amount of intelligenceB. the different situations they faceC. the different attitudes to lifeD. the background of life6. What’s the main idea of the passage?A. What’s real meaning of intelligence?B. What’s the “bright” children’s behavior?C. What’s a special outlook on life?D. How to live and behave in a new situation?7. What might the author continue to talk about in the passage that follows? .A. how to determine what intelligence isB. how an unintelligent person should be taughtC. how to judge whether a person is intelligentD. how education should be changedCOur village, Cinderland, was founded in 2000. It is a fully-sustainable(可持续的) eco-village on the Big Island of Hawaii located about 29 miles southeast of Hilo and 9 miles east of Pahoa. And it is within easy walking distance of the coastline —one mile north of Highway 132, just off Highway 137.Solar power supplies our electrical needs, and water catchment tanks hold abundant rain water for our use. Fruit trees and vegetable gardens are located throughout our tropical landscape and can be harvested at any time by the residents(居民) for their own personal consumption(消费).We accept all lifestyles and belief systems, and encourage individuality and diversity. A good attitude and an easy-going manner are most important to us; those qualities go a long, long way here!Tuesdays are a fun and big day here. In the morning, we all get together for a few hours for various work projects. In the afternoon, many will hop in the truck for a trip to the town of Pahoa. That evening, we then are all treated to what is well-known throughout this region as “Taco Tuesday”. Anyone is welcome to join us from the surrounding areas, which makes for a large gathering each week. It’s certain that drummers and other musicians will be playing around the fire pit (坑) each “Taco Tuesday”.With the exception of the few hours of work on Tuesdays, residents are free to do whatever they please. Some just relax, while others may snorkel(潜泳), surf, swim, shop, backpack, camp, go sightseeing, watch the lava flow, etc. It’s rare that someone leaves this area without feeling it is a life-changing experience. There are also many who decide to make it their permanent home.We are very welcoming. Come to give us a visit! Mahalo!8. In a textbookDEverywhere I look outside my home, I see people busy on their high-tech devices ( 装置 ), while driving, walking, shopping, even sitting on toilets. When connected electronically, they are away from physical reality.People have been influenced to become technology addicted. One survey reported that “addicted” was the word most commonly used by people to describe their relationship to iPad and similar devices. One study found that people had a harder time resisting the allure of social media than they did for sleep, cigarettes and alcohol. The main goal of technology companies is to get people to spend more money and time on their products, not to actually improve our quality of life. They have successfully created a cultural disease. Consumers willingly give up their freedom, money and time to catch up on the latest information, to keep pace with their peers or to appear modern.I see people trapped in a flu-like relationship with time-sucking technology, where they serve technology more than technology serves them. I call this technology servitude. I am referring to a loss of personal freedom and independence because of uncontrolled consumption of many kinds of devices that eat up time and money. What is a healthy use of technology devices? That is the vital question. Who is really in charge of my life? That is what people need to ask themselves if they are to have any chance of breaking up false beliefs about their use of technology. When we can live happily without using so much technology for a day or a week, then we can regain control and personal freedom, become the master of technology and discover what there is to enjoy in life free of technology. Mae West is famous for claiming the wisdom that “Too much of a good thing is wonderful.”But it’s time to discover that it does not work for technology.Richard Fernandez, a former CEO at G oogle acknowledged that “we can be swept away by our technologies.”To break the grand digital connection people must consider how life long ago could be fantastic without today’s overused technology.12. What’s the author’s attitude towards the overusing of high-tech devices?A. ObjectiveB.PositiveC. DisapprovingD.

Kyle Cassidy and three other members of the Annenberg Running Group were stretching on the grounds of the University of Pennsylvania, waiting for a few latecomers. The Penn colleagues and other community members meet three days a week for a roughly 30-minute jog and an occasional lecture. That’s right - during some runs, one of them delivers a talk. Topics range from the brain to Bitcoin. But on this day last January, it would not be their normal run. The first clue that something was off was the man who sprinted past them. “Running at an amazing pace,” Cassidy told Runner’s World admiringly. Cassidy discovered why the sprinter was so fleet of foot when another man ran by, yelling, “Help! He took my phone and laptop!”At that, the group did what running clubs do: They ran, trailing the suspect down the streets of Philadelphia until he ducked into a construction site. The runners split up. Cassidy ran around to the far side of the site to cut the thief off while the others wandered the neighborhood hoping he had dumped the loot (赃物) in a backyard. No luck. So they decided to ask residents whether they’d seen the guy. When they knocked on the door of one row house, they were in for a surprise. Unknown to them, he had already emerged from the construction site - and was hiding behind a bush by that very house. As the owner opened the door, the suspect darted out from behind the bush and right into the arms of campus police, who’d joined the chase shortly behind the runners. The members of this running group are not hard-core athletes. But they do understand the benefit of a little exercise. “Running is typically a useless sport where you turn fat cells into heat,” Cassidy told The Philadelphia Inquirer. “But occasionally it can be useful, and here was one of those opportunities.”1. Why do the group members gather together?A.To do some stretching. B.To have a regular run.C.To deliver a lecture. D.To cover some topics.2. We can infer that the success of the chase is mainly due to ______.A.the assistance of the runners B.the owner of the row houseC.the campus police on patrol D.the joint efforts of the people3. Which of the following best describes Cassidy?A.Athletic and generous. B.Courageous and ambitious.C.Helpful and humorous. D.Thoughtful and demanding. In my everyday life, I am on an ongoing journey to figure out different ways to reduce my carbon footprint on the planet. A carbon footprint is the measure of influence our activities have on the environment, in particular climate change. It is calculated by the amount of greenhouse gas weproduce in our daily lives. Fortunately, nowadays it is much easier to make eco-friendly lifestyle choices than, let's say, 20 years ago. But one question has been on my mind a lot lately: is it better to buy new eco-friendly products or used traditionally produced goods? After doing some research, I have decided that some things are better new and others are better used. Let me try to explain.A carbon footprint is made up of two parts, the primary footprint and the secondary footprint. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions(排放)of carbon dioxide(CO2)from the burning of fuels, including household energy consumption and transportation. The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use-those related to their production and breakdown.Based on this understanding, we have a good deal of control and responsibility over our carbon footprint. Things like dishes, clothes and furniture fall into the “secondary footprint” group, so less is more and we can focus on finding used goods to avoid the added production. However, for the car and the other appliances(设备)that we need we can go with new, energy-saving models. I heard somewhere that electronics and appliances give off 90% of their carbon footprint after they leave the factory. So it seems most reasonable to go for the energy-saving models. The main concern here is the amount of energy that goes into the making of new products and whether or not that extra carbon is worth the footprint the product will make once it gets to you.4. What is the text mainly about?A.What appliances to buy to save energy.B.What a carbon footprint means in our life.C.How to identify different carbon footprints.D.How to make eco-friendly lifestyle choices.5. What do we know about the secondary carbon footprint?A.It is related to our consumption of fuels.B.It is made when we are buying the products.C.It is less harmful than the primary carbon footprint.D.It is counted as ours though not directly made by us.6. They say wild chimps communicate 19 specific messages to one another witha“vocabulary”of 66 gestures. The scientists discovered this by following and filming groups of chimps in Uganda, and examining more than 5,000 incidents of these meaningful exchanges.Dr Catherine Hobaiter, who led the research, said that this was the only form of intentional communication to be recorded in the animal kingdom. Only humans and chimps, she said, had a system of communication where they intentionally sent a message to another group member.“That’s what’s so amazing about chimp gestures,” she said. “They’re the onl y thing that looks like human language in that respect.”Although previous research has shown that apes and monkeys can understand complex information from another animal’s call, the animals do not appear to use their voices deliberately to communicate messages. This was a significant difference between calls and gestures, Dr Hobaiter said.Chimps will check to see if they have the attention of the animal with which they wish to communicate. In one case, a mother presents her foot to her crying baby, signal ling: “Climb on me.” The youngster immediately jumps on to its mother’s back and they travel off together. “The big message from this study is that there is another species out there that is meaningful in its communication, so that’s not unique to humans,” said Dr Hobaiter.Dr Susanne Shultz, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Manchester, said the study was praiseworthy in seeking to enrich our knowledge of the evolution of human language. But, she added, the results were “a little disappointing”.“The unclearness of the gesture meanings suggests either that the chimps have little to communicate, or we are still missing a lot of the information contained in their gestures and actions,”shesaid.“Moreover, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animals convey with non-verbal communication. So, it seems the gulf remains.”8. What do chimps and humans have in common according to Dr Hobaiter?A.Memorizing specific words. B.Understanding complex information.C.Using voices to communicate. D.Communicating messages on purpose. 9. What did Dr Shultz think of the study?A.It was well designed but poorly conducted.B.It was a good try but the findings were limited.C.It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable.D.It was a failure but the methods deserved praise.10. Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.Chimpanzee behaviour study achieved a breakthroughB.Chimpanzees developed specific communication skillsC.Chimpanzees: the smartest species in the animal kingdomD.Chimpanzee language: communication gestures translated11. 将下列几个部分(A、B、C、D和E)按题号排序,构成一个符合逻辑的完整语篇。

Just two weeks ago, he was at my house when he decided he didn’t want to go to work. He called his boss and said he had to get a new set of tires put on his truck. Then he sat down and watched TV with me. Not only had he lied, but his excuse was not very believable. Another time he gave up a date with his girlfriend at the last minute, telling her he had to clean his car. She was angry and refused to go out with him again until he apologized. Last weekend, Bill offered the poorest excuse yet. He’d promised he’d help me move some furniture from my parents’house to my new apartment. He was supposed to br ing his truck over about 8 o’clock Saturday morning. I waited and then called and left a message on his machine. About 11:30, he called and said he was sorry but he’d been getting a new set of tir es put on his truck. I guess he’d forgotten he used the same excuse when he called his boss from my house. I think I need some new friends because I’m tired of Bill.7.Question 1When did Bill call and lie to his boss?8.Question 2What did Bill tell his girl friend he had to do when he didn’t want to meet her?9.Question 3What did Bill promise to help the speaker to do?10.Question 4Why does the speaker think he needs some new friends?第三节听取信息Last Friday, the Senior 3 students in No. 2 Middle School had a discussion about whether they should have classes on weekends.25%of them think they should have classes on weekends because the college entrance examinations this year will be held in June, and students should make full use of their free time to review what they have learnt.Another 35% are against the idea of having classes on weekends. They believe students should take time to relax on weekends so that they can study more effectively during the week. The rest of the students don’t agree with either of the ideas above. In their opinion, study and rest are both important for students. They suggest that one day of the weekend should be used to study and the other day they should rest.。
