Unit 1 Learning a Foreign Language/

The Opposition formed analliance with the trade unions and launched a general strike, which ultimately brought about the downfall of the government.2 如今,大学与现实世界的距离越来越小,学生也变得越来越实际。

第四册Unit 1If you ask me, real life is not all it's cracked up to be. Twelve years at school and three years at university, teachers banging on about opportunities in the big wide world beyond our sheltered life as students, and what do I find?Try as I might to stay cheerful, all I ever get is hassle, sometimes with people (especially boys, god, when will they grow up?), but mostly with money. It's just so expensive out here! Everyone wants a slice off you. The Inland Revenue wants to deduct income tax, the bank manager wants repayments on my student loan, the landlord wants the rent, gas, water, electricity and my mobile bills keep coming in, and all that's before I've had anything to eat. And then some bright spark calls me out of the blue, asking if I'm interested in buying a pension. At this rate, I won't even last till the end of the year, let alone till I'm 60.

Mastering a large number of words is essential to achieving fluency in a foreign language. An unofficial, but often quoted, figure for the Cambridge First Certificate examination suggests that students with a vocabulary of less than 3,500 words are unlikely to be successful in the exam. Current research also suggests that native English speakers who have been educated up to 18 years old or beyond know at least 16,000 English words. And unless you already speak a language like Spanish or German, there are no short-cuts to get a large vocabulary in English: you just have to rely on diligence and dedication. Of course you can figure outfrom the context the meanings of some new words you come across in your reading, but more often than not you have to look them up in a dictionary in order to be clear about their accurate meanings. A practicable way to pick up new words may be to read a lot, preferably stories that you find interesting or exciting. It's often good to read the same book over and over again: every time you read it, you will learn different new words, and the familiar context helps to fix them in your mind.Unit 21、我认为向他求助是不现实的。
事实上,他自己也需要帮助。
I don’t think it is realistic to turn to him for help. As a matter offact,he himself is in need of help.2、越来越多的人正在意识到与空气污染作斗争的迫切需要。
More and more people are being awakened to the urgent need of combating air pollution.3、有明显的迹象表明一些古老的传统和价值观念不再被年轻人珍视。
There are visible signs that some of the time-honored old traditions and values are no longer cherished by the young people.4、我们许多人觉得宇宙无限这一概念难以理解。
Many of us find the notion of a boundless universe is hard to grasp.5、因为在法律和规章中有许多漏洞(loophole),一小撮投机倒把者一夜之间暴富就没有什么奇怪了。
There being so many loopholes in the laws and regulations, it is no wonder that a handful of speculators got rich overnight.6、旅游事业的空前兴旺使这个从前只住有三百人的边境小镇突然繁荣起来。
An unprecedented boom in tourism brought sudden prosperity to the small border town, which was formerly inhabited by only three hundred people.7、根据这一信息,该国已经具有制造核武器的能力。
In the light of this information, that country already has the capabilities to make nuclear weapons.8、他不顾朋友们的反复警告,把所有的钱都投向了高风险企业。
Regardless of repeated warnings from his friends, he staked all his money on highrisk ventures.Unit 3
If you started on some venture and failed, do not despair / lose heart. There is a world of difference between “I have failed three times”and “I am a failure”.So long as you do not hold a negative concept of yourself or identify with failures but try to learn from them, you stand a good chance to succeed in the future. Does it ever occur to you that those who fail repeatedly are often victims of a poor self-image? Often their failures are due to internal causes rather than external causes. Numerous cases have borne it out that if they can be induced to change their viewpoint and construct a positive self-image, miraculous changes may take place in their performance. Success can come anytime---at thirty, forty or even after a lifetime of apparent failure. Early triumphs may be sweet, but success in later life often tastes even better.
Scientists are a small group of people who strive to gain insights into nature, seeking order in seeming disorder. They are credited with a special ability to think and analyze, and with infinite patience in making observations and collecting data. But ability and patience do not account for all scientific discoveries, which often have much to do with creative imagination. Indeed a leap of imagination is often the first step towards discovery. Scientists are also noted for their honesty. They put a high premium on honesty largely because it is essential to their career. Every theory they formulate is subjected to further testing. Every mistake or lie is bound to be found out. Therefore if any evidence is found contradicting their ideas, scientists do not suppress the evidence but modify or even abandon their ideas. In this way they have built up an immense body of knowledge, which helps us to understand better ourselves and the world around us.快速阅读重点Unit 11、B) offers something that TV and movies don't haveC) they call into play physical responsesD) Because reading develops the brain as well as the sensesB) Because the physical world can only satisfy their material needsC) will always have a link to the world no matter where they are2、D) It is the use of language in an inventive and imaginative wayA) the common people of London that lived in Shakespeare's timeC) because it uaually has an implicit lesson for usA) they can help people escape from a bleak worldB) we are given an accurate and deep understanding of the people of his time Unit 21、A) They had a clear understanding of the subjectB) The growing trend toward vegetarianism is due to an increase in the number ofolder peopleD) Because she ate too much rich foodB) By eating some vegetarian dishes at homeC) Older people tend to become vegetarians2、C) Unhealthily fatB) Adding more academic classes at the expense of physical educationD) The negative example of their parentsD) Provide programs like those offered at Live Oak High SchoolB) parents are more alert to what their children do and eatUnit 31、C) people tend to lie unconscioslyB) The more socially competent people are, the more they lie to make people feelgood or to make themselves look better.A) we have to acquire knowledge of lying in social relationships among childrenvery early because it implies how they will behave in the futureD) fibbing is commonplace and sometimes acceptableA) young children know the difference between positive and negative lies2、D) pretend to be younger than she really wasB) Employers did not have any special preference for qualities associated withyoung peopleC) They should shorten their employment history when applying for a jobD) Because the cards are always stacked against them either wayB) are obliged to be honest about their ageUnit 41、C) teach his students in an effective mannerA) his strong interest in the subject he teachesD) he be strongly commited do itC) acting as a positive role modelD) hero-worship the teachers they like2、C) teaching people how to continue their education during their lifetimeD) it can adapt learning to suit individual needsA) Students can become active learners by controlling the learning experienceC) Because it is efficient and inexpensiveB) Apple Computer plans to do away with classroom teaching entirely whenconditions permitUnit 51、C) the periods of light and no rain between bigger and wetter storms will belengthenedB) the result of human-induced global warmingD) the growing season in many parts of the world has been advancedA) multiply in large numbersA) scientists' predictions about the effect of global warming on the climate has ingeneral turned out to be correct2、D) substituting high efficiency models for your old equipmentB) sealing and insulating the air ducts in your atticC) increase clean energy supplyA) purchase reusable itemsB) energy efficiency and the massive energy savings it affords are crucial for theissue of climate changeUnit 61、B) do multilingual translation of simple itemsD) no translation software on the market comes close to the quality of humantranslationC) HispanicA) Because it would attract a wider section of the non-English-speakingpopulationB) human translators will be employed to translate sections of the newspaper thatappear every day of the year2、D) Because the majority of professional translators work on their ownA) By providing a network of professional translators even for obscure languagesC) They have lost touch with the new words of their mother tongueA) It can lower the cost of translation projects by employing translators to work asa teamD) It would mean the end of translation as a profession for translators working onan individual basisUnit 71、D) Because Cynthia Jay-Brennan managed to win the jackpot and survive analmost fatal car accidentB) lift her arm high above her shouldersA) Cynthia's sisterC) The love of her husbandC) there will be advances in medical science to allow for her cure2、C) A taxi driverC) if they could finish a 24-ounce steak with all its trimmingD) They thought he was having difficulty in finishing the steakA) 100 dollarsD) He still had room in his stomach for dessertUnit 81、D) Because a growing number of couples prefer to marry late or live togetherwithout taking the vows of marriageB) Many teenagers believe that finding a lifelong partner would be very difficultB) they are not satisfied with the husband's contribution to family dutiesC) Because divorce is one of its dominant themesA) they have seen too many marriages end in divorce or separation2、B) a harmonious marriage is beneficial for heart healthB) marriedC) Because the researchers wanted to find out the effects marriage had on bloodpressureD) unhappy marriages lead to an increase in heart wall thicknessC) To spend more time together。
