ADirections:There are three passages in this part. For each of them are four choices marked A,B,C and D.Choose the one that you think is the best answer.Mark your answer on the Answer Sheet.Passage oneIn this age of equality, sameness between the sexes is emphasized as if differences have to mean problem.Well, differences can mean problems, but only when they are not properly understood.Imagine Adam alone in the Garden of Eden and you will have an idea about the way many men feel today. If the major issue for women is overloaded in their life---balancing career,relationship,children,home----the crisis for men is loneliness and the loss of women.Twenty-five years ago, most men came home from work to a warm meal,a clean house, the devotion of a gentle wife. Now the majority of women work outside, they are no longer the full-time housewives as before,so men are deserted and easily hurt.Women get emotional support through a network of friends and family. Most men don’t have such relationships;they are intimate only with their wives or lovers. As a result, any lessening of their partner’s attention may be thought of as rejection or abandonment.Bob’s wife Sandy has a full-time job,and he really prefers her bringing home extra income.Yet he also feels uneasy and troubled.”When I get home at the end of the day, wanting to have a talk with Sandy,”he said,”She puts me off.First she makes dinner, then the kids need something,or a friend calls her.She talks with her sister, her girlfriends, her workmates, but not with me.I sometimes do feel abandoned and annoyed.”Since most men have difficulty admitting loneliness and hurt, they tend to become4angry instead.Bob’s constant complaints and criticism made Sandy confused and irritated.Eventually, they came up with a simple solution that met both Bob’s need for time and Sandy’s sense of responsibility to others. The first half-hour after Bob arrived home from work was“theirs”,they would sit together and just talk to each other everything they want to say.51.Many men feel hurt and abandoned because.A.women think it’s unfair to stay at home doing houseworkB.their wives are no longer gentle and caring to the familyC.The equality of men and women is strongly emphasizedD.Most women have their own jobs and don’t have enough time and energy caring about men52.Why do men care a lot about their couples’attitude towards them?A.Because their differences can mean problemsB.Because they don’t have a network of friends and familyC.Because they only want to have an intimate relation with their wivesD.Because men lack confidence nowadays53Which of the following statements about Bob and Sandy is true?A.Bob doesn’t wish Sandy to do a full-time job.B.Sandy is too busy to have time talking with Bob.C.Sandy puts Bob off since there’s no common topic between them anymore.D.Sandy feels equal to Bob now and no longer loves him as before.54.What does the passage want to tell us?A.Differences between men and women would certainly bring problems.B.All human beings should be considered equal.C.Only sameness could bring happiness to a marriage life.D.Mutual understanding between men and women helps to solve problem.Passage TwoMany people have the experience that getting up in the morning is so difficult and painful. This might be called laziness. But Dr.Kleitman has a new explanation to this,he has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work, you may say that you’re feeling“hot”.That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak.No one has discovered why this is so,but it leads to such familiar monologue as:”Get up,Tom!You’ll he late for school again!”The possible explanation to the trouble is that Tom is at his temperature and energy peak in the evening.Much family quarreling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better.Habit can help a lot.Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway, counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to.However,if your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.Get off to slow start which saves your energy.Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch.Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor.Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before.Whenever possible,do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.55.According the passage, what might bring family questions to the end?5A.Stopping familiar monologues every dayB.A sudden change of a family member’s energy cycleC.Being aware of energy cycles of other family membersD.Trying to control the energy cycles of other members56.If one wants to do better at his low point in the morning,he should.A.change his energy cycleB.go to bed earlier the day beforeC.try to overcome his lazinessD.get up earlier than usual57.What does the sentence”get off to slow start which saves your energy”mean?A.It will help you to control your temper early in the day.B.It will enable you to concentrate on your routine work.C.It will help to keep your energy for the whole day’s work.D.It will keep your energy cycle under control all day.58.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?A.Dr.Kleitman explains why people reach their peak at different hours of day.B.Habit can help people adjust to their own energy cycle.C.Each person has his own energy cycle.D.Getting up with a slow start helps us to save energy for work.Passage ThreeA person with a flat, dull voice which neither rises nor falls sounds like a flat and dull person! But he or she may not be!While we can’t deny the fact that people can give the impression that they are bored, anxious, friendly or angry just by the sound of their voice.A French friend of mine once said to me,”Your accent in French is excellent but you will never sound like a Frenchman until you put all your heart into your voice. It is a pity because you are a lively person and yet you don’t sound lively to a Frenchman!”We learn the grammar and vocabulary and even the correct pronunciation of the foreign people, but we may forget the important emotional effect of the music of our speech, for British people, the intention of language is attractive. That is to say,the rise and fall in the sound of our voice when we speak really matters. It’s unfortunate that the intonation of some other countries can often communicate the wrong meaning.British people sometimes feel offended because they think the other person is unfriendly even if he has spoken a perfect English sentence! And this failure of communication can also happen between British people themselves. If you want to communicate successfully with another person, you may have to think about the music of your own voice.Especially when you meet someone from a different part of your country or from another country, you should be careful!Don’t judge them only by their intonation!59.What does the writer want to show through the example in the second paragraph?A.To learn a foreign language well,we must learn the sound and pronunciation well.B.Grammar,vocabulary and pronunciation are not the only important elements in learning foreign language.C.A person with a flat, dull voice will not give other good impression.D.In learning a foreign language,we must talk to the native speakers fluently.60.The word“music”in the third paragraph means.A.intonationB.rising toneC.sweet voiceD.falling tone61.British people sometimes feel offended while talking with others because.6A.they can’t understand what the other person saysB.the other person says something rudeC.the language they speak are quite differentD.they misunderstand the other person’s words62.What is the main idea of the passage?A.To communicate with others successfully,we must know music well.B.We can’t simply judge a person by his voice, nor can we neglect intonation.C.Many listeners will not pay attention to the sound of one’s voice.D.It’s not easy for people from different countries or parts to communicate.Section B Reading ComprehensionPassage 1Many countries face a somewhat more serious economic problem in the form of an unfavorable trade balance with other nations. Such an imbalance exists when the total value of a country’s imports exceeds that of its exports. For example, if a country buys $25 billion of products from other countries, yet sells only $10 billion of its own products overseas, its trade deficit(贸易逆差)is $15 billion. Many underdeveloped nations find themselves in this position because they lack natural resources or the industrial capacity to use these resources, and thus have to import raw materials or manufactured goods. One effect of a trade deficit is the flow of currency out of a country. In the case of an underdeveloped nation, this can cause many financial difficulties, including failure to meet debt payments and obstacles to creation of an industrial base. Even in the case of a fully developed nation such as the United States, a large trade deficit is a reason for alarm. American products, made by well-paid workers in U.S. industries, cost more to produce than those made in places like Asia, where labor and material costs are much lower. Money spent on foreign products is money not spent on items produced by domestic industries.46. What does the passage mainly discuss? BA. Some worldwide economic problems.B. The cause and consequences of trade deficit.C. Lack of resources in underdeveloped countries.D. High labor and material costs in developed countries47. According to the passage, a trade imbalance occurs when _____B___.A. a country is facing serious financial problemsB. a country buys more from other countries than it sells overseasC. the value of a country’s exports is greater than that of its importsD. products imported are more expensive than those exported48. Many underdeveloped countries have trade deficits because ___D_____.A. they failed to meet debt paymentsB. they export most of their natural resources to other countriesC. they borrow too much money from other countriesD. they have to import most of their manufactured products49. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a possible cause of a trade imbalance? AA. The flow of currency out of the country.B. Low labor and material costs in Asian countries.C. Lack of natural resources.D. An undeveloped industrial base.50. It can be inferred from this passage that American industries ____B____.A. do not pay their workers sufficientlyB. are hurt by a trade imbalanceC. imported labor and material from abroadD. are able to prevent a trade deficitIV. Translate the following sentences into Chinese.1. Man’s knowledge about himself and nature has grown into a variety of sciences.人类对自身和自然的认识已发展成多种科学2. If the American offered dollars in payment for the car, the auto manufacturer would be stuck with money that no small Japanese shop would accept.如果在美国利率在SRC美元支付for the, the汽车制造商的摇篮与金钱迷住了,小日本店会不接受。

in the model bike for a real one?”So he spent the next five hours carefully working with clay to make a small bike.On Christmas morning,we were so excited for Al-ice to open the little box with the beautiful red andwhite clay bike and the note. She opened and read the note loudly. She looked at me and her father and said,“So,does this mean I can trade in this bike for a real one?”Smiling,I said,“Yes.”Alice had tears in her eyes when she replied,“I would never trade in this beautiful bike that Daddy made me.I prefer to keep it rather than get a real bike.”At that moment,we would have moved the God to buy her every bike on the earth.36.Why did Alice want to a new bike?A.Because she didn’t have a bike.B.Because her bike was old.C.Because her bike was stolen.D.Because her bike was out of style.37.The underlined word“ashamed”in the third paragraph means in Chinese.A.内疚的B.可耻的C.紧张的D.不开心的38.Alice’s parents didn’t buy her a bike because.A.they didn’t have enough moneyB.they forgot itC.They got angry with herD.they thought she didn’t want it any more39.What did the parents do at last?A.They bought her a new bike.B.They said sorry to her.C.They made a clay bike for her.D.They did nothing.40.What can we conclude from the last para-graph?A.Alice preferred a real bike to the model one.B.Alice didn’t know the meaning of the note.C.Alice still wanted a real bike.D.Alice was greatly moved by what her father had done.Passage2If you take vacation time in the coming year and plan on flying, here are some shopping tips to give yourundivided attention to.Those who fly first class and don’t care how much airline tickets cost are excused from this lesson.1.When to buyIf you’re shopping for domestic flights, check prices on Tuesday afternoons. This is an old tip but still valid because most US carriers continue to release sales on Tuesday mornings, and competitors quickly drop their fares to match the better deals.2.When to flyWeekdays continue to be generally cheaper times to fly than weekends for most flights. In the US specif-ically,the cheapest days are typically Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.A good itinerary(行程表)for the expensive US spring break travel period is Tuesday to Saturday;it won’t be cheap exactly, but it will save your money(in most cases)over week-end-to-weekend travel.3.Where to flyWe continue to see good deals to Boston and Denver and more and more nice prices to Chicago, Seattle and Washington, D.C.As for Europe, there have been incredible deals throughout the autumn and those will continue into the tely we’ve seen prices fall for London, while Dublin,Paris and Scandinavia continue to be good value.4.Direct vs.connecting flightsCompare the price of direct with connecting flights.Sometimes adding a stop to your route will save you money, and it might be enough to endure the extra-long flying day. Some examples:Boston to Seattle:$247direct,$234one-stopSan Francisco to Raleigh/Durham:$553direct, $362one-stopOkay,the savings on Boston-Seattle might not be worth it to you,but I’ll bet you’ll think twice about the direct flight for San Francisco to Raleigh.pare, compare, compareStifle the impulse to go to your favorite airline site to purchase tickets without doing any companson;it’s a recipe for disaster.Example:Let’s say you want to fly from New York to London and figure your favorite US legacy carrier will get you there for the best price.Airline price:$554round-tripComparison price:$486Obviously,the legacy carrier did not have the cheapest flight, but wait, there’s more. The comparison site also showed a cheaper flight from the same legacy carrier($521).See what you’re missing when you fail to compare?41.The best price for flights within the US could most possibly be found on.A.Monday morningB.Tuesday morningC.Tuesday afternoonD.Sunday morning42.Ticket buyers are advised to.A.choose direct flights rather than connecting onesB.take the cheapest deal from their favorite airlineC.avoid weekend-to-weekend flights in holiday seasonsD.look for flight deals to Europe throughout the summer43.According to the passage, how much does it cost to fly directly from Boston to Seattle?A.$247.B.$234.C.$553.D.$362.44.The underlined phrase“stifle the impulse”probably means.A.feel free to do somethingB.hold off on doing somethingC.get well prepared for somethingD.make quick decision about something45.What kind of people does this passage intend to?A.Those who have urgent business.B.Those who usually fly first class.C.Those who are too busy to take a vacation.D.Those who want to save money when planning their vacation.Passage3I’d always wondered what the point of travellingwas. If we’re only going to end up back in our daily routine(日常事务)anyway, aren’t we just cheating ourselves?Sept27is World Tourism Day.It also happens to be exactly three months from the day my three friends and I left for a one-week trip to Philippines,to learn scuba diving(水肺潜水).It wasn’t the typical relaxing vacation that most people would have taken. We spent our first morning sitting in a room watching tutorial(教学的)videos, while the rest of the days we would practise what we had learned from the video with our instructor, first in the pool and then in the sea.Every day,we had to dress ourselves up in a tight diving suit and a jacket with a heavy steel tank on the back. But somehow, the experience changed us.For starters,it allowed us to get to know ourselves better. When we had to fully concentrate on our breathing underwater—even a little bit of difference in the amount of air we breathed in or out could have changed our buoyancy(浮力)—we started to realize that we had never truly“felt”ourselves breathe. And its influence continues.During the three months after the trip,we have visited two diving exhibitions—something we wouldn’'t have been interested in before—where we learned about free diving, which is diving holding your breath, without an extra supply of air.We were fascinated and signed up for free diving courses without hesitation. Just like that,we got ourselves another new hobby. The trip also gave me the idea of documenting our underwater adventure in the form of a film.I knew nothing about filmmaking,so I decided to teach myself how to use movie-editing software. Two months later,I ended up with a pretty satisfactory20-minute-long film, and I now can add“moviemaker”to my list of achievements, next to“scuba diver”.Six months ago,did I expect all these new experiences would be in my future?Of course not.So while it may be true that there’s no escape from our daily routine,at least by traveling we can always escape our“old self”,and maybe even pick up some new skills.46.The main aim for the author to write this article is to.A.share her diving experienceB.describe her passion for scuba divingC.encourage readers to learn to diveD.explore the purpose of traveling47.How long did the author spend in learning scuba diving?A.About one week.B.About two months.C.About three months.D.About six months.48.During their trip to Philippines, the author and her friends.A.enjoyed a typical relaxing vacationB.found it easy to breathe under the seaC.spent most of their time learning and practising divingD.went diving in the sea right after watching tutorial videos49.How did the trip to Philippines influence the author?A.She learned a lot about free diving there.B.She developed a new hobby as well as new skills.C.She no longer took buoyancy for granted.D.She improved her concentration and courage.50.What message does the author intend to tell us in the passage?A.Traveling lets us discover a new side of ourselves.B.Traveling is a time for adventure.C.Traveling is a good way to relax.D.Traveling is simply an escape from our daily routines.Passage4Many people in China don’t like to spend a lot of time outdoors in the hottest months of the year, when temperatures can become very high. But Britain, which doesn’t get many sunny days, has a different attitude toward summer. Most British people love sunshine, and they spend as much time as they can outdoors on sunny days.In Britain,a series of two or more days at25℃and over is usually called a“heat wave”,and the whole country seems to become excited if such weather is reported.News reports and social media become filled with talk about the upcoming heat and sunshine.Indeed,British newspaper Metro recently wrote:“A spell of beautiful weather is about to hit us, bringing temperatures of up to30℃”.British people like to take advantage of good weather—it brings them together. For example, adults will drink beer outside pubs, young people will play soccer in the park with their friends, and the smell of barbecue smoke will fill the air,as people hold garden parties with friends and relatives.Although British summers are generally mild, they can also be unpredictable.Quit often,a short period of sunshine is followed by days of cold air and heavy rain.Young people usually put up with bad weather, but adults tend to complain about it.Some of them even blame the rain on weather forecasters. But good weather can cause a lot of drama, too. During heat waves—whose temperatures usually don’t get higher than25℃—people often complain that it is “too hot”,and some even demand to leave work early. The Trades Union Congress,an English and Welsh workers’union,is even trying to introduce a rule that forbids employers from making their employees work when the temperature outside is over 30℃.Just imagine that rule in Asia—every business would be empty in the summer.Still, even if Britain does not have the perfect climate,it’s always a lovely place to travel to in the summer. And if you’re lucky enough to visit on a sunny day,you will see British people coming together to relax and enjoy themselves.51.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.British people hate outdoor activities in summer because of heat.B.It is always cold and rainy in British summer.C.Barbecuing is a popular activity in Britain during good weather.D.British weather forecasters often make mistakes.52.According to the passage,a British“heat wave”refers to those days when the temperature.A.breaks a local recordB.reaches30℃C.keeps rising two days in a rowD.goes past25℃for more than two days53.How will most British people feel if there is“a heat wave”?A.Sad.B.Angry.C.Excited.D.Disappointed.54.What will the Trades Union do if the weather gets higher than30℃?A.It will forbid employers from making their employees work.B.It will demand workers to leave work early.C.It will forbid employees from working.D.It will blame the weather forecasters.55.What can we learn from the last three paragraphs?A.British people spend most of their time traveling during sunny days.B.British employers often receive requests to leave work early during heat waves.C.British workers can choose to work at home if they find the weather too hot.D.Most British people are proud of their mild climate in summer.非选择题IV.Writing(40points)1.网上购物(shopping online)越来越普遍。

Which one do you like best?W: I don't know, Brad. I know one thing. I didn't like the one on the 68th street.M: Neither did I. Let's cross that one off. That leaves the 7nd street one and the 80th street one.W: The one on the 80th street has a better view and a very cheerful kitchen.M: Yes, and I like the carpet in the hall. It was clean, but there was no good place to put a desk.W: That's true. You should always just put it in the corner of the living room. But then you wouldn't have any privacy and the bedroom was too small.M: Right! And I do need to be able to leave my work out on the desk without having it looked into by noisy visitors.W: Oh, Brad, we don't have that kind of visitors, but I do agree the desk shouldn't be in the living room. It is a constant reminder of unfinished work. What about the 72nd street apartment? It has a dining area. We could eat in the kitchen and put the desk in the dining area. It's more private there.M: Yes, that sounds OK. Only what I didn't like about that place was the west window. It gets quite hot in the late afternoon with the sun beating down on the window.W: Didn't you notice the air-conditioner?M: No. Was there one?W: Yes, and we can improve on the curtains too.M: That place did have the best parking facilities of the three?W: Yes, I think that apartment is best for our needs. There's good parking and there's a semi-private area for your desk that takes care of the daily activities. We'll just let the other chips fall where they may.M: OK. Let's take that one.How many apartments have they seen?Long Conversation 2(总题数:3,分数:0.00). Questions 12 to 14 are based on the conversation you have just heard.1. It's 27th Springfield Road, Bristol.M: So, could you tell me, please, exactly what you saw of the incident?W: Yes, well, I was just coming out of the supermarket exit when all of a sudden I heard this cry, and when I turned around to see what it was, I saw this man sort of tugging at this woman's handbag, and she was hitting him with her free hand, and then he pushed her and she fell to the ground. He then ran off down the street and round the corner.M: I see. And could you describe the man for me?W: Well, um...let me see. He was medium height, about thirtyish. It all happened so quickly that it's hard to remember.M: Do please try. It could be very important in helping us to catch him.W: Oh yes, I do remember something else. He was wearing a yellow jacket—you know, a light anorak sort of thing and jeans, blue jeans.M: Did you notice the color of his hair by any chance?W: Oh, dark I should say.., yes, dark brown. And that's all I can remember, I'm afraid. It was very wavy.M: Thank you very much, Mrs. Daniels. You've been very helpful. (分数:3.00)A.Attending a sales conference.B.Waiting for his next flight. (正确答案)C.Staying with his parents for the weekend.D.Visiting an old school friend.解析:[听力原文]This is kind of a funny story. I was in Toronto and had a layover between flights. I'd arrived at about 6 p.m. and my flight out wasn't until about 8:30. Well, my flight was delayed. It got really crowded at the departure gate. I was getting tired and there were so many people around. I hate crowds, so I went to sit away from the departure gate to escape the crowds. I was reading my newspaper, feeling drowsy. And then...the next thingI know, I wake up and there's no one around! The crowd is gone.I had fallen asleep and missed my flight. They must have made lots of announcements and I missed them all. Boy, did I feel stupid? I had to stay in Toronto overnight and catch a flight out the next morning. What did the man do in Toronto?Passage Two(总题数:3,分数:0.00). Questions 18 to 20 are based on the passage you have just heard.1. (分数:3.00)A.Dress the cut with a clean cotton bandage.B.Clean the cut with warm water.C.Hold the cut closed for a few minuts. (正确答案)D.Call a doctor.解析:[听力原文]As any parent will tell you, small cuts and miner grazes are unavoidable among small children. Such cuts and grazes will usually need little or no treatment. The bleeding will clean the wound naturally, and it should stop within a few minutes, as the blood clots and dries. More serious cuts may need to be gently cleaned with soft cotton and warm water. They should then be dressed with a clean cotton bandage. Follow this simple checklist of questions. Ask yourself each of these questions in order to make sure you treat cuts and grazes properly: Firstly, is the cut on the face? If it is, call a doctor as soon as possible, especially if the eye is injured. Secondly, is the cut near the eye? If it is, put a clean piece of cotton wool over it and press down firmly for about 5 minutes.Thirdly, ask yourself if the cut is still bleeding badly. If it is, dress it with a clean cotton bandage and call a doctor as soon as possible.Fourthly, is the cut a deep one, and is it wide open? If it is, clean the cut gently with clean cotton wool and a little warm water. Then hold it closed with an adhesive dressing.Fifth question, was the cut made by a nail or a long, sharp piece of wood? If it was, there may be some dirt in the cut. Let it bleed for a while to clean itself. Then clean it with cotton wool and warm water and dress it with a clean cotton bandage. Finally, don't forget that young children can become very easily upset or shocked by a cut—especially if it is a serious one. Try to keep them calm and quiet. Don't give them anything to drink, but keep their lips wet with a little water. What should you do if a child is cut near the eye?Part Ⅱ Vocabulary and Structure(总题数:30,分数:0.00)1. The tornado is like a giant vacuum sweeper that (35) up anything in its (36) . Experts believe that the most violent force of a tornado is (37) inside the funnel, where a vacuum is created because of very low air pressure. When this vacuum moves (38) a building which is filled with air under (39) pressure, the difference between the air pressure inside the building and that outside causes the building to explode. Reading Comprehension (40%)There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some True-False questions or Multiple-Choice questions. Choose among A, B, C, and D or between T and F to answer each question. Write the letter of your choice on your Answer Sheet.Passage 1If we view a science as a body of systematized knowledge, then chemistry is usually called a natural science because it is concerned with knowledge of the natural world. At times we may wonder why there is no complete system into which all of chemistry fits perfectly. Gaps in the present system, however, show that chemis try is still a growing subject and that we haven’t yet discovered all of its facts, laws, and theories. In other words, chemistry as a science is very much with us today, and its future holds the bright promise of much more to come.Man’s knowledge about h imself and nature has grown into a variety of sciences. The growth of the separate sciences has been more developmental than intentional. The separation of the naturalsciences into physical and biological sciences, and physical sciences into physics and chemistry, happily breaks up a larger body of knowledge into more manageable parts. At the same time we should remember that the concepts, techniques, and applications of the various sciences are interdependent and not exclusively a part of one science or another. In this respect, chemistry is a key science among the natural sciences because everyone, regardless of the area of natural science he wishes to pursue, needs at least an introduction to the principles and simpler applications of chemistry as a foundation for his specialty.Chemistry deals with the properties of matter, changes in matter, the laws and principles describing these changes, and the concepts and theories that interpret them. Traditionally, chemistry has evolved into four provinces: organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry. The traditional area of organic chemistry is concerned primarily with compounds of carbon, and inorganic chemistry deals with non-carbon compounds. Physical chemistry, a productive marriage of physics with chemistry, includes the problems of chemical reactions, the energy associated with them, the structure of molecules, and the nature of various states of matter. Analytical chemistry emphasizes the development of precise methods of analyzing the chemical composition of substance. Analysis may be qualitative (what is in it?) or quantitative (how much of each component is in it?). In recent years, the development of a wide variety of electronic tools has greatly speeded up the chemist’s work and has made poss ible more accurate measurements as well as measurements of new factors.Chemistry has grown up as a discipline during the past 200 years. It is younger than astronomy but older than psychology. Today, when a student begins to study a discipline, such as chemistry, it may appear to him that the subject is completely “worked out,” that all the answers have been found, and that there is nothing new to discover. Because there is a huge body of knowledge — facts, theories, and applications—already worked out, this impression is understandable. However, more new chemistry than ever is now being discovered in these three areas. There are over tow million entries in the current index to the chemical literature each year, and at least 300,000 new compounds are made annually. An intellectual discipline must provide for freedom of exchange of ideas, discoveries, and applications. Consequently, an intellectual discipline thrives best in an academic atmosphere.51. There are over two million entries in the current index to… B.A. entranceB. a listC. a gateD. the right to enterPassage 2For centuries town and country have been regarded as being in opposition to each other. It has been suggested that the superficial differences between the two—wide-open spaces contrasting withbrick and concrete—are less important than the contrasting attitudes of town and country.I am one of the many city people who are always saying that given the choice we would prefer to live in the country away from the dirt and noise of a large city. I have managed to convince myself that if it weren’t for my job I would immediately head out for the open spaces and go back to nature in some sleepy village buried in the country. But how realistic is this dream?Cities can be frightening places. The majority of the population live in noisy massive tower blocks. The sense of belonging to a community tends to disappear when you live fifteen floors up. All you can see from your window is sky, or other blocks of flats. Children become aggressive and nervous, staying at home all day, with nowhere to play; their mothers feel isolated form the rest of the world. Strangely enough, whereas in the past the inhabitants of one street all knew each other, nowadays people on the same floor in tower blocks don’t even say hello to each other.Country life, on the other hand, differs from this kind of isolated existence in that a sense of community generally binds the inhabitants of small villages together. People have the advantage of knowing that there is always someone to turn to when they need help. But country life has disadvantages too. While it is true that you may be among friends in a village, it is also true that you are cut off from the exciting and important events that take place in cities. There’s little possibility o f going to a new show or the latest movie. Shopping becomes a major problem, and for anything slightly out of the ordinary you have to go on an expedition to the nearest large town. The city-dweller who leaves for the country is often oppressed by a sense of unbearable stillness and quiet. What, then, is the answer? The country has the advantage of peace and quiet, but suffers from the disadvantage of being cut off; the city breeds neurosis and a feeling of isolation—constant noise batters the senses. But one of its main advantages is that you are at the centre of things, and that life doesn’t come to an end at half past nine at night. Some people have found (or rather bought) a compromise between the two; they have expressed their preference for the “quiet life” by leaving the suburbs and moving to villages within commuting distance of the large cities.56. In the author’s opinion, ____C_____.A. city life is better than country lifeB. country life is better than city lifeC. city life and country life have their own advantages and disadvantages eachD. neither of city life and country life is desirable57. All the following are advantages of country life except that C .A. it has fresh airB. people there are more friendly to each otherC. it is cut off from the outside worldD. it is peaceful58. All the following are disadvantages of city life except that B .A. people are more isolated from each otherB. life doesn’t come to an end at half past nine at nightC. it is dirty and noisyD. it is crowded59. All the following about people living in the country are right except that A .A. they live a more convenient life.B. they are easier to find help.C. they have a stronger sense of community.D. they live a less exciting life.60. The compromise between country life and city life is B .A. to live in the city for a period of time and then in the country for anotherB. to work in the city and live in a nearby villageC. to give up the job and live in the countrysideD. to live in the countryside after retirementPassage 3Geologists have been studying volcanoes for a long time. Though they have learned a great deal, they still have not discovered the causes of volcanic action. They know that the inside of the earth is very hot, but they are not sure exactly what causes the great heat. Some geologists have thought that the heat is caused by the great pressure of the earth’s outer layers. Or the heat may be left from the time when the earth was formed. During the last sixty years, scientists have learned about radium, uranium, and other radioactive elements. These give out heat all the time as they change into other elements. Many scientists now believe that much of the heat inside the earth is produced by radioactive elements.Whatever the cause of the heat may be, we do know that the earth gets hotter the farther down we dig. In deep mines and oil wells the temperature rises about 1℉ for each 50 feet. At this rate the temperature 40 miles below the earth’s surface would be over 4,000℉. This is much hotter than necessary to melt rock. However, the pressure of the rock above keeps most materials from melting at their usual melting points. Geologists believe that the rock deep in the earth may be plastic. In other words, the ro ck yields slowly to pressure but is not liquid. But if some change in the earth’s crust releases the pressure, the rock melts. Then the hot, liquid rock can move up toward the surface. When the melted rock works its way close to the earth’s crust, a volcan o may be formed. The melted rock often contains steam and other gases under great pressure. If the rock above gives way, the pressure is released. Then the sudden expansion of the gases causes explosions. These blow the melted rock into pieces of different sizes and shoot them high in the air. Here they cool and harden into volcanic ash and cinders. Some of this material falls around the hole made in the earth’s surface. The melted rock may keep on rising and pour as lava. In this way, volcanic ash, cinders, and lava build up the cone-shaped mountains that we call volcanoes.61. Geologists have discovered the causes of volcanic action. F62. The deeper we dig, the hotter the earth is. T63. Rocks deep in the earth melt when the pressure from the rock above is lost. T64. The explosions blow the melted rock into pieces of different sizes and shoot them high in the airso that they cannot be found again. F65. V olcanoes are cone-shaped mountains built up by volcanic ash, cinders and lava. TPassage 4Individuals receive most of their income as suppliers of the factors of production. As laborers they receive wages. As landlords they receive rent. As lenders of money capital they receive interest. As owners, or part owners, of business firms they receive an income that is partly interest and partly profits. Their decisions in disposing of this income determine what goods will be produced and in what quantities. In primitive times, individuals and families satisfied their own wants directly by hunting and fishing and gathering wild foods. If they had clothing, it was the skins of animals they had killedthemselves. They built their own shelter in the form of huts or of tents made from skins. Later some people started to raise agricultural products and others started to breed domesticated animals for their own use. As long as these conditions persisted, the economy was simple to understand and explain.Later, however, we began to have some specialization and division of labor. Some skilled individuals began to devote most of their time to making bows and arrows and trading them to the hunters for meat. Some people discovered how to make clay pots and traded them to others for agricultural products. In some places people discovered how to weave cloth and traded the cloth for other products. Most primitive tribes developed some form of money to overcome the difficulties of direct barter exchange. Our present economic system represents an extremely high development of this principle of specialization and division of labor. Few people now produce goods for their own use and almost no one produces all the different kinds of goods that he wishes to use. Instead we find large numbers of individuals who devote all their working time to making a small part of one particular article or performing one particular operation in a productive process. Others are performing various kinds of specialized services. Most people sell their productive services for money and then use the money to buy goods and services that are produced by a large number of other people. Some people are engaged in making machines that will be used to make other machines or tools with which to manufacture goods. This process of specialization and division of labor results in a tremendously greater output of goods and services than would be possible without it. It also makes us extremely dependent upon other people both to buy the goods or services that we help to produce and to supply the goods or services for us to buy that we do not produce for ourselves. This interdependence contributes to the complexity and severity of many problems arising out of changes in economic activity. In spite of the problems created by interdependence, almost no one advocates a return to a system of individual family self-sufficiency. Not only would a return to self-sufficiency mean a greatly reduced standard of living; it is doubtful if the present population could even be maintained under such a system. 66. The individuals’ decisions in disposing of their money determine what goods will be producedand how many of each kind of goods will be produced. T67. The specialization and division of labor made the economy simpler to understand and explain. F68. Money was developed as a means to overcome the difficulties of direct barter exchange. T 68. Specialization and division of labor greatly speeded up the development of economy. T 70. The interdependence among people in modern society makes economic problems more complexand severe. TIV. Later, while my parents were helping the farmer on the farm,I helped feed the other animals, and then played with the farmer’s kids.Decades later,I still have vivid memories of that trip.It made me realize the value of a vacation,of seeing new things, meeting new people and sharing memorable experiences with family members.Even today I still think of that family trip when I plan my holiday trip with my wife and kids.Vacations are a time for resting and connecting. As a bank manager,I spend much of my workday encouraging my customers to save their money. One of the reasons I give is that we should all have enough for a family vacation every year.In our busy lives, family is what we should be saving our money and time for.For my family, our vacations start when we begin planning the trips. We talk about destinations and our budget ahead of time.Among the things we discuss are: Can we save money by renting a house instead of spending six nights in a hotel?Would it be better to buy groceries and cook for ourselves rather than eat out every night?Involving the kids in planning the vacation makes sure that they have a great vacation too. While I prefer to visit historical sites and museums, they love to fish and swim.So I build in some relaxation time so that the vacation works for everyone. Each year, setting aside vacation time to spend together is especially important to us.A relaxing environment opens the doors to all kinds of conversations—deep, silly, meaningful. There’s no pressure from the usual everyday tasks. This is the one week a year when I don’t care whether my kids have cleaned their room or done the dishes. What matters that week is that everyone is having a great time.46.During his most unforgettable vacation, the author______.A.lived a week like a real farmer’s kidB.found that farm work is tiring and boringC.felt farm life was much harder than living in a cityD.helped his parents with housework all week47.What is the author?A.A farmer.B.A teacher.C.A bank manager.D.A travel agent.48.The author explains that since he grew up, he_____.A.can hardly remember the details of the trip to the farmB.always wants to go back to that farm with his wife and kidsC.has been too busy to enjoy the vacation againD.thinks of his trip to the farm when organizing family vacations49.Which of the following is TRUE about the author and his family?A.They usually discuss the details of a trip before traveling.B.The author’s kids don’t like to take trips with him.C.The author is strict with his kids, even during holiday trips.D.They usually separate and spend their vacation in different places.50.What is the main idea of this passage?A.It’s important for people to plan and have wonderful family vacations.B.Memories in childhood can last very long and influence us a lot.C.We should travel as much as possible to give ourselves a rest.D.The value of a vacation is to experience a totally different lifestyle.Passage4When touchscreen smartphone entered our lives more than a decade ago, they redefined what a“phone”is.Being our MP3player,camera,game console(游戏机),dictionary, computer, and map all at the same time, the smartphone soon became something we couldn’t live without. On Sept13,2017,Apple,one of the lead producers of smartphones, released its new iPhone X, and consumers and journalists everywhere went crazy. They were all curious to see what Apple’s latest smartphone would offer.Ever since its launch in2007,the iPhone has completely changed the way that people interact. It has become like a part of the body—a third hand or an extra eye.Because smartphones have become so important in our lives,we’ve even started to develop relationships with them.As tech writer Tom Chaffield commented to Newsweek,“What Apple did is to take things that other people have developed, and turn it into an object of desire and affection, something that people would accept as an extension of their identity.”But is it necessarily a good thing that we should be so attached to a device, whether it be an iPhone or some other smartphones?Shouldn’t we really be trying to forge relationships with other people, rather than objects? It’s an argument commonly heard. The response to it might be that smartphones are phones after all;they’re just devices to talk to other people on.But that doesn’t fully answer the objections. With our smartphones,we’re connected to other people and to the world, but not in the way that most of us would hope. Some people complain that smartphones,as well as tablet computers and other devices, are destroying our personal lives. The devices lock us into the“out-side”world,and lock us out of the world of family and friends.Perhaps we should stop and consider whether we’ve lost the right balance in life.We can’t go back to the world before the smartphone revolution, that’s for sure, but we can surely find ways to enjoy the advan-tages they bring, without forgetting that,at the end of the day, they’re the means to an end,not the end it-self.51.What is the author’s main purpose in writing this article?A.To promote Apple’s latest smartphone.B.To describe the benefits of smartphones.C.To inform us of the smartphone revolution.D.To analyze the impacts of smartphones on our lives.52.Tom Chaffield’s comment is quoted in the passage mainly to explain______.A.how iPhones are different from other smart-phonesB.how iPhones help people stay connectedC.why people are so attached to their iPhonesD.how iPhones allow users to show their identity53.The underlined word“forge”in Paragraph5is closest in meaning to_____.A.formB.ignoreC.copyD.imagine54.According to the second paragraph from bottom,smartphones_______.A.make people lose their privacyB.separate people from their loved onesC.have more advantages than disadvantagesD.help people establish deeper connections with each other55.What does the author advise us to do?A.Stop using smartphones.B.Take advantage of smartphones wisely.C.Treat smartphones as our friends.D.Live a balanced life with the help of smart-phones.非选择题IV.Writing(40points)1.广场舞(square dancing)流行,有人支持有人反对。

In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees-anywhere at all!Because of the many changes in computer technology , laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. Stateofficials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into(调查) laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really c an improve people’s health.Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial(有益的).Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programmes. The group that tolerated(忍受) the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny programme. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress(紧张;压力) and pain.As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laug hter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.51.
