Smiles and Laughter for Asians An Asian uses the smile and laughter to exude happiness, joy, content, but on the flip side that same smile or laugh can be used to mask shame, embarrassment, loss of face, sadness or hurt feelings. Hence, a smile or laugh, which appears to be out of context, can confuse, upset or even irritate an unwary Westerner. In Asia, laughter serves many functions.
