There was on shop in the town of Mufulira, which was notorious for its color bar. It was a

drugstore. While Europeans were served at the counter, a long line of Africans queued at the

window and often not only were kept waiting but, when their turn came to be served, were

rudely treated by the shop assistants. One day I was determined to make a public protest against

this kind of thing, and many of the schoolboys in my class followed me to the store and waited

outside to see what would happen when I went in.

I simply went into the shop and asked the manager politely for some medicine. As soon

as he saw me standing in the place where only European customers were allowed to stand he

shouted at me in a bastard language that is only used by an employed when speaking to his

servants. I stood at the counter and politely requested in English that I should be served. The

Sugar—Friend VS Enemy

A) Sugar is everywhere. It’s in our drinks, it’s in our

foods, and it’s hidden in places we never would think of. Many

would call sugar their friend in time of need, but in fact their

so-called “good friend” could turn out to be their worst enemy

in disguise. Sugar for many is something they may have been

battling with for a long time. Here’s a simple three-step

process to help you start to win back the battle for your health.

B) The first step is to be aware of what sugar really does

to your body. Most people will say they “know” that they

shouldn’t have sugar, but they really can’t help it. To me

that is a lack of true awareness of what sugar does to oneself.

Culture is the total sum of all the traditions, customs, beliefs,

and ways of life of a given group og human beings. In this sense,

every group has a culture, however savage, undeveloped, or

uncivilized it may seem to us.

To the professional anthropologist, there is no intrinsic

superiority of one culture over another, just as to the professional

linguist there is no intrinsic hierarchy among languages.

People once thought of the languages of backward groups

as savage, undeveloped forms of speech, consisting largely of

grunts and groans. While it is possible that language in general

began as a series of grunts and groans, it is a fact established by

the study of “backward” languages that no spoken tongue
