B I still remember the days when I was a youthful student in an engineering school. I lived a casual life, without caring about the future. I smoked, drank with friends and made girlfriends. Little did I realize that casualness would certainly lead to loss. Two years had passed and I was staring down a report card that highlighted FAIL in more than half the subjects. I didn’t care, at least not until my dad found out about it. You see, I studied in India and unlike the United States where the students are expected to finance their own education, my dad financed me. Then came the day when my dad found out my habit of smoking. He lost his temper but he just told me, “Son, your allowance is cut in half from this moment on.” It hit me like a roundhouse kick from Bruce Lee. I was jolted(震摇) out of my bones! I couldn’t comprehend how to pay off the debts that I had accumulated in college. I owed everybody money: the grocery store, the bars, the restaurants, my friends, etc. I was living a life filled with credit. When I came back to college, I knew if I didn’t change the way I lived my life I wouldn’t be able to pay everybody off. So I decided to make some changes, drastic

Inventors have issued a new digital running shirt, which has all the features of an electronic tracking device and more. The ―D-Shirt‖ is made from a special fabric(织物) woven with sensors, which record your heart rate, GPS location, route, speed and altitude. The shirt, which is lightweight and washable, sends the information to an app on your smartphone by Bluetooth. The phone can store and analyze data from t he fabric, showing the person’s route, time, heart rate and number of calories burned. It can also help indicate when the runner is pushing himself too hard and risking the heart attack.―We believe that our connected lives in the future should not be more complicate. They should be easier. So we are developing technology which does not require people to change their habits,‖ said Stanislas Vandier, deputy chief executive. ―You never leave home without a shirt. So we are simply turning a T-shirt into D-Shirt. In the future, the same principle can be applied to all sorts of clothes.‖Developers are now working on heart, breath and sweat sensors, so this shirt can be particularly helpful forpeople in extreme conditions, such as athletes, first responders, and soldiers. The census showed that those who provide 50 hours or more of care a week while trying to hold down a full- time job are three times more likely to be struggling with ill health than their working counterparts(相对应的人) who are not carers.32.What’s the most important factor to predict if people will actively care for the elderly?A. Family networks.33.The US study finds that_________.A. sons are twice likely as daughters to care for parents in old ageB. sons are unwilling to leave caregiving responsibilities to female familymembersC. sons and daughters seem to give equal care to their parentsD. having a sister makes men less likely to do their fair share34.What does the author stress(强调) in the last paragraph?A. This package includes happiness and sorrow, failure and success, hope and despair. Life is a learning process. Experiences in life teach us new lessons and make us a better person. With each passing day we learn to handle various situations. LoveLove plays a vital role in our life. Love makes you feel wanted. Without love a person could become cruel and ferocious(残忍的). In the early stage of our life, our parents are the ones who show us with unconditional love and care, and they teach us about what is right and wrong, good and bad. But we always tend to take this for granted. It is only after marriage and having kids that a person understands and becomes sensitive to others’ feelings. Kids make a person responsible and mature and help us to understand life better. Happiness and SorrowMaterialistic happiness is short-lived, but happiness achieved by bringing a smile on others’ face gives a certain level of fulfillment. Peace of mind is the main link to happiness. No mind is试卷第2页,共11页happy without peace. We realize the true worth of happiness when we are in sorrow. Sorrow is basically due to death of a loved one, failure and despair. But these things are temporary and pass away. Failure and SuccessFailure is the path to success. It helps us touch the sky, teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way. Success brings in money, fame, pride and self-respect. Here it becomes very important to keep our head on our shoulder. The only way to show our gratitude to God for bestowing(授予) success on us is by being humble, modest, courteous and respectful to the less fortunate ones. Hope and DespairHope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do well. Hope makes us dream. Hope builds in patience. Life teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hour, because after every night there is a day. Nothing remains the same. We have only one choice: keep moving on in life and be hopeful.Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday, for it has passed and is beyond our control. Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or dull. The only alternative is to work hard today, so that we will enjoy a better tomorrow. 1、What would be the best title for the passage? A .Life is a Journey of Ups and Downs B .Love Plays an Important Role in Our Life C .Failure is the Path to Success D .Hope Keeps Life Going2、What is the author’s understanding of happiness? A .Materialistic happiness leads to people living a short life. B .Smiling to others adds to our happiness. C .Happiness is temporary and passes away. D .Happiness is closely related with peace of mind.3、In the author’s opinion, tomorrow ________. A .is beyond our control B .is bright and hopeful C .calls for today’s efforts D .count for more than yesterday4、The passage is most likely to be found in a ________.A.magazine B.tourist guide C.book review D.science report One day on my luxury (奢侈的) holiday cost 30 yuan. Bus ticket: 2 yuan. Breakfast, lunch and dinner: 5 yuan. Hotel: 20 yuan. OK, so it was a 10-seater bus with only four seats that weren’t broken and 20 other people on it. OK, all my food came from one steamed bun (包子) stand at the side of the road, and the “hotel” was a hostel (青年旅社), and I shared a room with four strangers. But the steamed buns I bought were so delicious and the bed in the hostel was soft and comfortable and I had the best night’s sleep I’d had in years.Cheap travel is “in”. It’s on reality shows, and it’s all around us. People who once went to five-star scenic spots are suddenly filling youth hostels and campsites, showing off to their friends about their 24-hour trip in the third-class sleeper train across Mongolia. Now, I’m not a millionaire who can afford more than a budget holiday. But even if I could, I don’t think I’d s pend the money.Budget travel is addictive (令人上瘾的). It’s partly the challenge of squeezing the most out of your pennies — and it can get a bit ridiculous(荒唐可笑的). My stomach wasn’t too impressed with the meat stir-fry I bought from a stand simply because it was 1 yuan, for example. But it’s easy to travel in a smart way, too. With the Internet, you can always check out reviews and find hostels, food and things to do, recommended by other budget travelers who’ve been there before. You don’t have to suffer, an d it means you can afford to spend more nights on holiday, see more things and have more experiences.5、The author mentions her budget travel story at the beginning to ________.A.show what budget trips are generally likeB.introduce the best trip she’s ha d over the yearsC.show how difficult it can be to spend as little money as possibleD.display her ability to spend her money cleverly6、The underlined word “in” in the second paragraph probably means ________. Now let’s compare Eastern and Western weddings.Chinese and Indian brides normally wear red dresses and most of the wedding decorations are of the same color. This is because the color red is said to bring good fortune. In many Eastern weddings, especially Chinese weddings, the bride will change into a different dress after the ceremony. White dresses only arrived in modern times because of the influence of Western wedding dress designs.Western wedding dresses are different. Brides usually wear a wedding dress that is white in color and wear it throughout the whole wedding. Wearing white wedding dresses is said to have started in the 1840s, beginning with Queen Victoria, Queen of Great Britain. There are occasions when brides dress into more comfortable clothing so that they will be able to move more freely during the wedding reception.Traditional practices are strictly followed for most Western weddings. The couple follow up with any plans they have agreed and decided on to make their special wedding day unique and memorable. Wedding receptions and other celebrations differ among the East and the West, but the concept is still the same. They are held to show gratitude towards family members, friends and guests for being a part of the wedding ceremony.Another common custom that weddings of the East and the West have is the wearing of the wedding veil(面纱). According to superstitious(迷信的) beliefs, the bride wears a veil to protect her from being seen by evil spirits and the bridesmaids are decoys(诱饵). This is still followed even today.8、Queen Victoria is said to be the first woman in Britain to ________. ADo you spend too much time playing video or computer games or going online? Here are some ways to tell if you need to ask for help:1. You feel really happy when you’re online or when you’re playing games, but as soon as you have to stop, you get angry or upset.2. You think about going online or playing when you are supposed to be focusing on other things, like doing school work or having dinner with your family.3. You spend more time with your keyboard or controller than physically hanging out with your friends.4. You get up in the middle of the night to check your e-mail or your MySpace comments because you’re having a hard time sleeping. If you think there might be a p roblem, there probably is. And you certainly wouldn’t be the first. Some experts say as many as 10 percent of all people who use the Internet or play video games are addicted to them. It’s a tough habit to kick. It’s not like you can just stop using the co mputer altogether. You need it for school and to stay in touch with your friends. The best thing to do is talk to someone you trust. Maybe it’s your mom or dad, a big brother or sister, or a good friend who is concerned about you. Tell them you’re worried about being obsessed and you need their help.Chances are, the games aren’t the real issue. You may be using the computer to avoid doing things you don’t want to do or thinking about things that are troubling you. Sometimes that’s OK—grown-ups do it, too. But when it’s keeping you from sleeping, or causing you to be angry with the people who love you, there are other ways.21. The author offers four ways in the passage to tell us __________.A. how to deal with Internet addictionB. the Internet can do great harm to usC. the Internet and games are very popularD. how to judge if we’re addicted to the Internet22. The following shows you may suffer from Internet addiction EXCEPT that________.A. you wake up at midnight to check your microblogB. you get upset when you have to leave the InternetC. you turn to the Internet when you have a question.D. you think about computer games when you’re studying23. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. The games are what’s really troubling us.B. We use computers to escape from reality.C. Children are usually lazier than grown-ups.D. We needn’t take Internet addiction seriously.BMelbourne is located in the state of Victoria, and is the second biggest city of Australia. Though smaller in population than Sydney, Melbourne is larger in area. Melbourne has about 4.5 million people, and it is continually growing due to its enormous job market. Melbourne doesn’t have mountains or any other immediately identifiable reference points, and because of that, it can look boring. The Yarra River cuts the city into two halves. The eastern half is called Southbank, where you’ll find many cafes and restaurants, as well as the huge Crown Casino. The western part is the downtown itself.Melbourne is well known in Australia for its crazy climate. It is possible for someone to wake up in the morning to a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius, and by afternoon, the temperature has risen to 40 degrees, climbing and dropping like a roller coaster. A beautiful and clear day with fresh winds can be transformed in a matter of hours into a hurricane-like experience with cloudy skies, thunderstorms, and very cold winds coming directly from the South Pole. That is why Melbournians don’t do anything without checking the weather report before lea ving home, and the majority of them will keep an umbrella and a coat in the trunks of their cars.Melbourne is the most cultural city in Australia. Migrants(移民) from every country in the world are present in this great city, giving it a great multicultural mix. It creates a healthy combination of languages, religions, lifestyles, and food specific to Australia. People speak English, Chinglish, Greeklish, Espanglish, Italinglish, and even Portuguenglish. After spending 3 weeks in Melbourne, I’ve found that only half of the people speak English with a pure Australian accent. Everybody else’s accent somehow carries a little bit of their homeland with it. This characteristic shows, in a very positive way, the multicultural diversity of the Australian population. Melbourne, as a super metropolis(大都市), delivers all the goods and deals well with all the problems of big cities.24. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?A. To introduce the city of Melbourne.B. To show all the attractions in Melbourne.C. To introduce the history of Melbourne.D. To imply that Melbourne is the biggest city.25. Compared with Sydney, ____________.A. Melbourne has the larger populationB. Melbourne has the better job marketC. Melbourne is greater in areaD. Melbourne is located in the mountains26. A visitor to Melbourne will be shocked by ____________.A. its countless cafes and restaurantsB. its unique and crazy climateC. its high temperature in the morningD. its beautiful and clear skyCHow many people have had the opportunity to see the curvature(圆弧) of the earth below and a completely black sky above? Sitting at the edge of the craft, preparing to jump, was an unforgettable experience. Before I jumped, I said, “I’m going home now.” and that’s what I was thinking —with my jump I’d be going hom e to the people I love. I was also aware I only had 10 minutes of oxygen, so part of me was thinking, “Don’t waste too much time. Get going.”As I fell, I was focused on what I needed to do. There was a time when I was thinking I might be in trouble. But even then I could be calm, as I had trained so hard and because we had taken measures that would have created drag(拖曳) and slowed me down, so I’m glad I fought to get control and didn’t need it. I became the first person to break the speed of sound in freefall.I trained for five years for the jump —mentally and physically, including things like holding firmly, as it’s very hard to use your hands in those gloves. I also learned about all the technical and medical issues involved in a jump: that was essential to earn the respect of the scientists and doctors on the team and work together with them. As a professional BASE jumper, I was used to being independent.I always knew death or injury was possible, but I didn’t think I would die. I am a very meticulous planner: I look at all the risks, and if they are too high, I won’t undertake the project. The best thing to result from the jump is still to come. Not only have we proventhat a human can successfully break the speed of sound in freefall, but it’s clear from the response we’ve received that this mission(任务) has inspired people to follow their own dreams, whatever they are.Would I do it again? No. Once I’ve accomplished something, I’m always ready to move on to the next challenge.27. During the fall from space, ____________.A. the author thought of a reason for jumpingB. the author was in a nervous stateC. the author tried different measures that he came up with by himselfD. the author thought of the possibility of danger28. While the author got trained for the jump, ____________.A. he respected the scientists and doctorsB. he learned to deal with many problemsC. he depended on his teammates all the timeD. he didn’t work well with his teammates29. What does the underlined word “meticulous” in the fourth paragraph mean?A. worried.B. wonderful.C. cautious.D. interested.30. Which of the following is true about the author?A. He is satisfied with what he is.B. He is always trying to pursue his dreams.C. He is ready to accept challenges from others.D. He is going after fame and money.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
